hi everyone welcome back to my channel i'm steph and today we are doing a ranking book tropes video i saw a bunch of other booktubers doing this i'll try to link the first one down below if i can find it but basically there's like this website where you can rank things and you can do it with like anything you want so i made my own template with a bunch of tropes that are like often repeated in romance books so i thought it'd be fun to show you guys my rankings and why i rank them what i did interruption before we get in today's video to quickly mention today's sponsor which is book of the month i'm so excited to show you what books i got this month so if you're not already familiar book of the month is a super popular and fast growing book service for readers and their mission is to promote new and emerging authors and help readers discover what books they love so basically their team vets hundreds of books every month and then gives their readers a choice from a curated selection of new and early release titles so you could spend more time reading and less time researching and book of the month is risk free so you can skip any month anytime and not be charged plus they have the best price for new release hardcover fiction books like you can literally get your first book for only 9.99 using my discount code which i'll put on the screen so i'm so excited to show you what books i got so this is the box it comes in and i got the book the heart principle by helen huang she wrote the kiss quotient and the bride test and i love the kiss quotient so much this is her new release can't wait to read this one then i got damnation spring by ash davidson this looks very interesting i love the cover they always have such pretty covers on the book of the month books this cover again the inheritance of organia divina i don't know if i said that right but this cover oh my gosh not happy family by shari lapana the description in this family everyone is keeping secrets even the dead and last but not least i got once there were wolves by charlotte mcconaughey i'm so so excited about the books i got this month especially the heart principle thank you so much book of the month for sponsoring today's video so i have my computer right here and i'm just gonna screen record myself doing this okay so here is the screen we're looking at from top to bottom we have god tear which can be like my all-time favorites i actively look for these books and try to seek them out then we have love like if it's in a book i'll probably love it like just as it sounds i like it nothing crazy it could go both ways and then e totally depends on the book some books i love it some books i hate it or it's just like i have no opinion on it it's fine if it's there it's fine if it's not and then a void is tropes i hate or actively avoid if i hear a book has that trope i immediately bump it down on my tbr because i'm not excited for it and then here at the bottom we have i think there's 29 different tropes that i could come up with so i'm just gonna rank all of them let's get started i'm going to start from the very beginning teacher student this is one that i avoid i hate teacher students i just don't like the power dynamic i don't think i've ever read a teacher student book that i've enjoyed i have a few teacher student books on my tbr that a bunch of people have recommended me and the reason i've never read them is because i actively avoid it because i usually end up hating it it just does not feel right then i have forced proximity force proximity is definitely going to go on love i love when two characters have to be around each other even though they don't want to so i love a good enemies to lovers with force proximity because then it's like they're always around each other and the tension is brewing and you get to see them around each other all the time like they're never really apart because they're in force proximity so i'm definitely gonna put that in love okay then bad boy good girl oh that is definitely a god tier for me i just am a sucker for the cliche bad boy good girl story i feel like they're always so similar and so cliche but so good and entertaining there's something about a bad boy that i love and have a soft spot for so don't blame me blame the staying up all night reading wattpad fan fiction during my prime developmental years that's the reason that that's up there i blame you on that next is mafia romance this is something i've recently been getting into i'm gonna go with e all the mafia books i've read i've actually really liked but the trope itself i would prefer not to read like something about the patriarchal male dominated girls have no say in anything i just don't love that i won't avoid it but i definitely won't go out of my way if i hear something as a mafia romance but i've recently been getting into it and i've liked the ones i've read but i just don't like how the women are treated grumpy sunshine is going god tear guys i love grumpy sunshine i feel like grumpy sunshine bad boy good girl kind of go together i love a good grumpy sunshine moment something about the guy finally starts seeing the light and the goodness in the world once he meets the heroine oh my god i love it so much a lot of my favorite couples of all time are grumpy sunshine that's definitely god tear if i hear a book as grumpy sunshine i'm like oh reading that soon bodyguard romance love i love bodyguard romance i've read a few something about falling for your protector and then they're hesitant because it's their job i love them i really really do right person wrong time so i i kind of associate right person wrong time with second chance romance it didn't work out the first time maybe they'll work out again or maybe it doesn't have a happy ending i'm gonna go with er because i'm gonna go over here to write person not enough time because i love that and i put those as two separate tropes because right person wrong time to me is like the happy ending and then right person not enough times like when one of them is sick or there's something keeping them apart permanently and they don't get a happy ending i love pain and crying in books and right person not enough time is one of my favorite kind of books like so many of my favorite books are right person not enough time just because i feel like they're so impactful but right person wrong time like they do end up finding their way back to each other it's like good like i like a good second chance romance but it's nothing special to me only one bed trope don't hate me but it's only gonna go to like i know this is like god tier for a lot of people but i often find it really forced and cliche like i feel like the author tries to put it in because they know people like it like i really like when the two characters all sleep on opposite side of the bed and then they wake up like all like cuddling and intertwined with each other i think it's so cute but telling me that it's one bedrop is not going to make me go pick up a book just because i know it's in there just cause it's like such a quick moment and then it's over with love at first sight immediately avoid i hate insta love i despise love at first sight insta love any of that love triangle avoid i hate love triangles unless they're done right a love triangle book that i loved was serenading heartbreak by ella fields because there's no cheating involved it's kind of a well-written love triangle but if i hear a book as a love triangle like the selection i hated the love triangle in the section especially when one of the guys is like or one of the characters is the obvious good choice and they keep going back to the wrong person you're like what is the point like it feels like you're just stalling at this point fake dating god tear fake dating is one of my all-time favorite tropes i'm planning a fake dating recommendation video coming soon i love it so much them having to be together and fake being the other and then slowly they're like oh my god are we faking are we not faking is he feeling what i'm feeling was him holding my hand fake or was it real i'm confused and i just love the fake dating trope so much sports romance i like it usually end up loving the book but for other reasons besides the sports romance like telling me it's a sports romance won't make me read it because honestly i don't care about the sports part like in off-campus whenever they start talking about hockey i'm like i don't care go to the romance so yeah i like love a lot of sports romance books but i love them for other reasons besides that they're swear to romances i do like it but nothing crazy single parent i'm gonna go with er usually you don't find out right away that one of the characters has a kid it takes a little while and then you're like oh if a kid kind of kills the vibe they can't just do whatever they want it's like they have a whole other responsibility but i do love a few single parent trope books because i love seeing the other love interest like start getting close to the other person's kid like i think it's so cute but i typically wouldn't go for a single parent trope so accidental pregnancy avoid i do not like accidental pregnancy like i didn't i don't want a child in this story like i wanted you guys just to be together i avoid it bully romance and don't hate me for that i know a lot of people love bully romances like penelope douglas writes a bunch of bully romances and i've read them but not my favorite i like enemies to lovers but bully romances sometimes take it too far like they'll literally be harassing you and like making fun of you for having dead parents and then the next chapter they're like making out and you're like what like have some standards sometimes it just goes a little too far for me and i find it annoying like the back and forth and the hooking up and then hating each other and usually they're bullying them because they're in love with them and i'm like okay this is just immature i won't avoid a bully romance but i won't actively seek one out brother's best friend hopefully my brother's not watching this i'm just kidding i love the brother's best friend trope the forbiddenness the secrecy the brother like finding out the drama the betrayal everything and like the tension between them the whole book usually building up all the brother and him are hanging out and then they're always around each other but like he knows she's forbidden but then he's protective of her oh my god i love brother's best friend friends with benefits to lovers i'm gonna go e because there's some books where people hook up in the beginning and then they end up falling for each other and then there's some books where they like make an agreement to be friends with benefits so it's like very broad i prefer an emotional connection before a physical connection so i'm gonna go with e only if it's done right ugly love is one of my favorite books and that's friends with benefits to lovers so that just says a lot of this tier ranking it could be an a and one of my all-time favorite books workplace romance i'm gonna go with like because i do like it because it is for proximity but there's also the work element and like sometimes they're competing for a same job title and there's a like rivalry aspect and i like it i really do like a workplace romance but i'm not like crazy about it where i like need the workplace vibes and workplace romances but yeah i do like them like the hating game spanish love deception amazing enemies to lovers you already know you already know enemy celebrities god tier i'm really picky with my enemies lovers though i need my enemies to leverage to be slow burn actual hatred for a reason they hate each other and then it's a slow development into friendship to lovers i don't like when they're enemies for no reason or they're enemies for like four chapters and then in chapter five they're confessing all their feelings and love for each other opening up to each other i need my enemies to love her to be done right and when it's done right it is absolutely god tear strangers to lovers i feel like this is like very very general and broad i feel like so many books fall under strangers to lovers so i'm gonna go with love because i feel like a stranger slivers book is never just stranger to lovers like it has other tropes thrown in there like i like that it feels very realistic and natural so that's why i put it in the love category childhood friends to lovers god tear i love childhood friends to lovers one of my all-time favorite tropes especially if one of the characters has been in love with them since they were kids and it's only further developed over time and then the other one comes to a realization i just love it so much i will actually seek out books that are childhood friends delivered slow burn i'm going into love because sometimes slow burn is too slow and sometimes slow burn is perfect when it's too slow and there's too much filler and it feels like they're just trying to make you wait i get annoyed and bored but when it's a slow burn that is done with so much angst and like things that keep you wanting to read because they have little moments like every chapter just like the slightest thing in like every chapter but it's so tiny but it keeps you holding on but like if the slow burn is done in a way where the characters just aren't together the entire book until the very end and they have no interaction yeah that's not the slow burn for me friends to enemies to lovers i'm going with like on this one because friends to enemies to lovers is usually because of a miscommunication trope the friends had a falling out because of a miscommunication and they end up hating each other for no reason and then they reunite and they realize they hate each other for no reason because they actually finally talk about it after years of hating each other and then they're like oh it was miscommunication that whole time well i've always been in love with you and i love you and then they're together and i hate the miscommunication trope and i feel like friends to enemies lovers always says miss communication trope so that's why i'm only putting it in like instead of love if it's a great second chance romance then i love it but generally i'm putting it in like age gap see this is a hard one age gap really really depends i'm picky with my age gap i'm gonna put it in like it's between e and like i'm gonna put it in like because sometimes it's god tear and i love it the forbiddenness but then sometimes i avoid it at all costs like teacher student or when the character is too young that it feels not right it goes both ways and i feel like there's a fine line between what is okay in an age gap and what is not and some books just really really push that boundary and make me hate it so i'm putting it in like because it's dead in the middle it could go it could be two extremes god tear and avoid at all cost one of us is famous i'm gonna go like on this one nothing special to me no books are really coming to mind when i think of this trope but i feel like i do think it's an interesting element to have one of them being famous it's an added aspect but nothing i'm crazy about i hate everyone in the world but you that's the fastest god tear i've ever put up there i have an entire video on this and i'm planning on another one because i've read so many since then i love this trope so much i don't love when the guy is actively rude and disrespectful and violent towards everyone but if he's cold and standoffish and closed off to everyone except for the main girl i absolutely love it like when he only opens up for her it's amazing okay friends to lovers when they meet when they're older so it's not childhood friends it's just regular friends i'm gonna go love basically same as childhood friends television just less years of pining but i love it all the same and last but not least good boy baddy girl god tear i love it it reminds me of archer's voice i love that trope i've been looking for so many if you have recommendations for good boy bad girl please let me know something about the innocent boy will always get me right in the heart i love it so much it has definitely got tearing something i look for all the time so please give me recommendations for it and there we have it that's my tropes all ranked wow i hope you guys enjoyed this video was so fun to film thank you for watching if you want to follow me on my other social medias they're all linked down below as always and i'll see you in my next video very very soon bye [Music]
