Puss in Boots The Last Wish is the best thing to come out of the Shrek Cinematic Universe since Shrek 2. this might honestly be my personal favorite anime film to come out this year it may not be your number one but this is making it into a lot of people's top fives easily and if you told me that a Puss in Boots sequel would slap this hard I would have called you a liar but here we are so let me tell you all about the greatness that was the last wish but don't worry I'll start off spoiler free and give you a warning once I start dipping into the heavy stuff alright let's talk about the greatness also fair warning there's gonna be a bit of footage from the first Puss in Boots movie I need the b-roll movie Stone Theaters and all the trailers are kind of the same the basic plot of this film is that posts fresh off of not doing anything in the fourth Shrek film has returned to his old life of being a folk hero loved by the people hated by the powerful he is living what he thinks is his best life and he is at the top of his game going from City to City partying saving the day living la vida loca however when one of his latest escapades ends with him dying he realizes he's down to his last life as cats have nine lives and he's used up eight of them and now it's a race against the clock to find the Wishing Star and to get his lives back being friends new and old terrifying enemies and even managing to learn a few life lessons along the way this film honestly feels like it was tailor-made for me as I can't undersell how much of it resonates with me and cater to my particular dark sense of humor if you were to go just purely by the film's marketing you aren't ready for how dark this film is willing to go and the subject matter that it tackles the trails aren't a bit misleading but not in a bad way as it presents plus kind of just going to early retirement but the truth is plus his entire self-image is shattered in the First Act of this film we see him go from this Larger than Life character to this frightened and beaten down mess desperately looking for a chance to regain his former confidence plus is forced to tackle the idea of his own mortality with the realization that he can die reshaping his whole character he develops anxiety starts having panic attacks he starts questioning how he wants to live his life versus how he lived it the topic has taken way more seriously than you expect just going through the trailers and how they blow through how puss died previously but this ends up working perfectly later in the film and it's not just him though the whole film deals with death in some incredibly dark shit happens here this film has a body count and the dark humor is just so good at getting him to laugh at the bad guys getting maimed horribly only to then turn around and horrify the audience I I love Dark shows I love messed up shit but there's always something about seeing dark subject matter being pulled off in general audience media that always hits and sure you can show me some horrific imagery but if you do too much it's just the norm it loses the ability to shock you but when it's in a film kids are gonna watch and you see the parrots gasping more than the children that just hits different I mean the dog's backstory alone you're not prepared really though this is easily the most interesting puss has ever been and as someone who has never been a big fan of CAD Zorro it's impressive how much this film is able to make me care about him and his Supporting Cast between Kitty Soft Paws and the dog I finally feel like puss has a Supporting Cast that can put him on par with Shreks also don't worry if you haven't seen the original film or any of the Shrek ones they don't matter there's a couple obvious Easter eggs but you don't need to know them to enjoy this film it's very friendly to first time viewer hours in another Cena and he always got to talk about it the animation like I said I do not care for the first film and the fact that they announced that they're doing a second one over a decade later gave me no confidence but when the trailer dropped and I thought that they were leading into stylization I was hooked as this film is just so fun to look at the cam work is amazing the fight scenes mwah extra little 2D details add on top of the 3D designs Elevate this film into something that feels visually fresh it's definitely taking a play out of spider versus playbook for sure it's also very much doing its own thing more of this plays and not The Uncanny Valley Tech demos the ETI doesn't equal quality and I'll take a film that actually Embraces the medium any day of the week instead of one that feels embarrassed that's not live action everything about this film breathes creativity and is fully worth the price of admission this movie was designed to stand on its own it is not coasting off of Shrek red whatsoever and that is so good to see especially from a franchise that has not done anything recently and to make it even better the film is stacked with great characters who don't bog down the plot as I'll get into more details with this in my spoilers section but there isn't a weak or unfunny character in this entire cast the heroes are all great puss is at his best Kitty Soft Paws is a perfect foil the real scene stealer though might actually be the dog who I could have sworn was gonna be the worst but he's a National Treasure who is great in both comedy and the slower scenes and they all fit just perfectly into this plot this film does not drag it is always going it is always utilizing its cast both for the narrative and the themes that it's going for Jack Horner is delightful in how unapologetically evil he is when we're seeing some heavy scenes with the other characters we'll just cut to him just doing a horrific things all of his played for comedy and that is so good because it is just a breath of fresh air as we'll have all these different character moments come back to him realize he's a static character and he is owning it the wolf is easily the coolest fucking character in this film as the man feels like a horror movie villain Goldilocks and the Three Bears are shockingly well developed they are basically the second group of main characters in this they managed to feel less like villains and more like the heroes of Their Own Story it does occasionally feel like they're leaning into them for spin-off bait but in the film they're good they are compelling and get some of the best laughs in the film and the fact that we have so many characters all of them are used perfectly there is no drag it is just so good for me because I swear 2022 has been the year of overstuffed casts for me like my only real complaints for this film are extremely minor and mostly personal taste like the stupid number of pre-movie adverts jerking off the theater going experience yes Nicole going to the theaters is great you know what would make it better starting the movie 10 minutes earlier you guys already have my money just give me the service I paid for also John Mulaney is a little bit miscast as Jack Horner he's just doing himself which usually works for most cartoons and he voices but his energy is mostly right well I don't feel like his voice fully fits the character design and I just can't fully put my finger on to say it any better than that okay let's talk spoilers skip to here for my final thoughts so really for this below section I just want to talk more about what I liked about the characters so it's really hard to talk about what I loved without spoiling their best moments like everything having to do with the wolf is a spoiler mainly because he is a literally deaf this here is really stacked with wolf furries but death has no right to be as cool as he was from when he first appeared how he quietly stock posts throughout this film I loved him they treat him less like a final boss and more like a manifestation of all of puss's fears and anxieties we got quick shots in the crowd to know that he was looming and just hearing him whistle in the distance would just immediately changed the tone of the scene and we would get the vibe that he was a specter of death chasing after puss and I love that I thought okay that is so cool how he's just anxiety incarnate for puss so for them to reveal that he's actually death it's perfect and it makes even better in hindsight when you realize what he's been doing this entire time this film is all about puss struggling with his mortality in question the image of who he was when post first gets the news that he's on his last life he plays off he's gonna go right back to doing his usual shtick then the wolf appears rocks puss his shit and teaches him fear plus has a brush with death and that shakes him to his core it really leads to these great moments of vulnerability and introspection for puss as fearing death humbles him forcing him to lean on people and to ask for help to re-examine who he is as a person and how just trying to live up to this Legend has cost him all of his loved ones and become miserable helping him realize that his quest to get his lives back won't fix a toxic lifestyle that he was living death is here because he thinks that the whole cat's having Nine Lives thing is BS and that puss specifically was treating life and death frivolously so if we're supposed to spend the entire money running away from Death only to have to finally face it it's Cinema it is the perfect culmination for this film and post is scared and the rest of the cast isn't slacking either Goldilocks and the Three Bears are really solid as Goldie has a similar lesson to puss in that she learns how to appreciate what she has instead of chasing this ideal all the Bears are great Hava bear is great Mama Bear is great baby bear is very good in that yes the siblings are throwing hands they are a genuine family and I really Vibe with that and it makes it hurt when Goldie announces that her actual wish is to find her real parents is the movie got you to care about them and it makes you care even more when the Bears decide to help Goldie in spite of her more selfish Choice it breaks our heart in all the right places and by the end of the film we really get to see the Divide between the characters who learn to change and embrace what they have versus someone like Jack who's just pretty much a dick as both Goldie and posts both decide to ignore getting their wish to save their friends like it's honestly hilarious how this entire film everyone is having character developments then we would cut to Jack who is just completely static every attempt at giving this man more depth or backstory just gets slapped down as you find out he is just a monster he's a rich kid who was pissed off that Pinocchio was more popular than him and he dedicated the rest of his life to hoarding magic for it this man had chimney Cricket on his shoulder trying to make him a better person only for the cricket his conscience to dip when he realized that the man was a lost cause it's perfect and provides a great narrative break for the other storyline this film knows how to utilize all of his characters without creating any dead space or making us feel like this one element is holding back the rest of the story like I thought I was gonna hate harito I thought this dog was going to be The Annoying comedic psychic but no he's a good boy him being a therapy dog helping puss work through his issues it's adorable and heartfelt and plus is having that panic attack it felt so real the eye was just like oh my God no the dog's with him he's calming him down he's taking a breath that might be one of my favorite scenes of the film like the moment though where I knew this film was gonna be amazing it wasn't the fight with the giant it wasn't the first meeting with the wolf it was the moment when perrito decided that blissfully tell Kitty and puss his backstory about how his owner kept trying to abandon him he even stuffed him in a sock and threw him into the river and none of this phases him he thought all of it was a game and is like so yeah my life is wasn't too bad it was pretty good and I'm just like you poor baby plus kitty Amber was just horrified that this happy-go-lucky dog had such a tragic origin story that in this movie full of messed up people he somehow has the most tragic backstory in the film and it just works so well as it makes the point about living in the moment treasuring life that even perito who came from such a terrible origin is out here still living his best life this whole movie is so good in that every little thing every moment every character builds off of each other it contributes to that central theme those Central ideas in these Great Moments the script is so good for this film like that's really the end of all of it like animation is great but the script is just so rock solid and this isn't a Puss in Boots film like that's the thing this is the film that's gonna get all this all this dread about your mortality in Puss in Boots too like it's crazy I love it Kitty is also really good I be remiss without mentioning that she exists not a stand out like the rest of the cast but the idea that posts left her at the altar was a fun reveal made even funner by the fact that she didn't even show up she realized that post was too in love with the legend to let anyone else into his life and seen them together super satisfying though I will say that the final shot is a little bit Antony as having puss come into his own to finally feel like he is grown as a character and has found a new family a new cast that he can go out and have adventures with to only end the film on a massive nod to Shrek kinda undercuts this being its own thing especially if Kitty and perito do end up in Shrek 5 they will be the plus two to Shrek's tag along which no they deserve better than that so this whole final nod is just nothing more than a reminder that Shrek exists and to look out for the sequel in theaters would have been perfect as a mid-credit scene but as the final shot it kind of feels like a step back to me final thoughts I would recommend this film to everybody everyone should go check out Puss and Boots in The Last Wish for Christmas it's just the right amount of Darkness A Perfect Blend of humor for adults and kids with great action a lot of Great Character introspection that you would not expect from a Puss in Boots sequel it's worth seeing in theaters and this might honestly be one of my favorite animated films of the year and I will be very sad if this film gets buried or underperformed because those are released right next to Avatar 2. but let me know what you all thought down below did you like the film did you love it who's getting more fan art Mr Wolf or the wolf let me know and as always like share and subscribe to help me avoid YouTube obsolescence love you all peace out
