the melee combat and project zomboid can be a tad difficult to understand to get used to so today i thought i would update my old combat guide and give some basic info and tips that i've personally picked up while playing through project zomboid to make your lives a bit easier feel free to skip through the chapters should i bring up any information you already know but anyways without further ado let's get started also i just want to make sure if you haven't already to enable combat outlines for every weapon it's super darn helpful to make sure you aren't going to miss and whiff your swings to start off with we are briefly going to go over some information that relates to your character which can really affect the tides of combat one thing that you should always keep an eye out for is how your character is currently feeling at the time no matter how strong or proficient your survivor is they will still fall victim to exhaustion and fatigue which are the two main status effects that will make your character hit about as hard as a wet paper towel especially when both are active aside from those two your characters panic can also affect the accuracy and damage of your swings as well there's nothing wrong with taking a break from finding a horde to fix these status effects it will probably save you in the long run [Music] passive stats can be some of the hardest to level up so it's important to keep these in mind when you do make your character but both strength and fitness have a massive effect on your character's ability to fight through groups of zombies the strength stat affects the distance and chance to shove zombies to the ground and the overall damage you do to them while fitness determines your character's exhaustion rate and how fast you can really recover from that how i would really break it down is that strength is great for newer players while athletic is better suited for experienced players that want to keep the fight going because strength from the start gives you a lot more control over fighting smaller groups but athletics is really what can spell the difference between fighting 10 to almost to 30 zombies especially when you can make up the difference in strength with weapon skill even a strength zero character can wipe out a horde should they have enough proficiencies with the weapon the skills you want to keep an eye out for most to improve your combat prowess are going to be nimble maintenance and the respective weapon skills now nimble is one of my favorite skills to level mostly because it allows your character to strafe much faster giving you way more control over the horde if you can get nimble high enough you can have the ability to juggle hordes and constantly back up until victory maintenance is also very helpful as it allows you to get the most out of your weapon just having a few levels in the skill can give you an extra 100 kills on your favorite blades and axes and lastly we have the respective weapon skills we will be going more in depth with the different types later so i will just say right now that having a higher level allows you to swing faster deal more damage and it gives you a higher chance of defending against bites and scratches when you get grabbed from the front before we get into weapon types i thought it'd be good to mention that the weapon weight directly relates to how quickly your character gets exhausted from swinging it so swinging a heavy weapon will exhaust you much quicker while swinging a lighter weapon will have your character go the extra mile also any short type of weapon allows you to carry something in your off such as a bag while long weapons require you to use two hands but usually have more damage and range to swing with lastly the type of weapon can also affect the clothing and gear on the zombies you kill with blunt weapons leaving clothing intact while bladed ones tear and rip up the clothing so if you are looking for a really nice jacket consider pulling out a bat or using your foot to kill them instead of a blade this is the most common weapon type and one of the more versatile out there for that reason but short blunt is like the vanilla flavor of weapons it's super easy to spec into it allows you to carry extra gear and you can quite literally find one in every single house and if you can't find any you can also disassemble a bunch of things and require pipes and bars that way as well the construction worker is a perfect profession for this as it gives you plus three short blunt as well as effectively making your character a beast from the start the main drawback of this weapon is that you won't be able to get anything more powerful than a lead pipe and the range can be a bit scary for some now we have the cousin of the short blunt short blade this is a bit of a sleeper class as there aren't a lot of benefits for this type aside from having it as your secondary weapon on your belt you can also use it to get instant kills with a jaw stab but no zombies can be nearby when you do this so this is really only geared towards stealthy kills but one major benefit that short blade does have is how little that they weigh so if you have a character that's built around knives you can take out a horde with a knife without breaking a sweat easily they're also very commonly found stuck within zombies so you should have a good supply of screwdrivers and eyes for the near future long blunt is a good middle ground when it comes to weapons as there are a few heavy hitters while it's still relatively common to find the main benefit for long blunt is having the most knock-back capability out of every weapon class barring a few short blunt weapons this allows you to effectively control smaller groups of zombies as a good half of them are going to be sent to the ground from your swings though the highlight for this type for me is the humble crowbar this thing boasts the most amount of durability in the game and you would need to kill a few hundred zombies just to wear this down overall a pretty reliable type to spec into axes are also pretty decent of a choice as well they're a good mix between long blade and long blunt boasting higher damage and being a bit more common than long blades you'll mostly come across a hand in fire axe with the hand axe being a one-handed weapon that works great as a tool and secondary weapon and the fire axe an absolute beast of a weapon should you get a few levels into it there's also the wood axe but i recommend keeping that as a tool until you get a lot of levels as it has a very slow swing and recovery rate spears are the glass cannons of project zomboid they can be some of the most busted weapons you can use in the game but in order to use them half decently you need to build an entire character around them particularly in carpentry and maintenance skills thankfully they are really cheap to make but they only last on like five to seven zombies max with zero maintenance skill so you're gonna need a lot but what makes these weapons shine is the instant kill rate your character can be on the verge of death weak and exhausted you can still one shot zombies which is an insane feat for these things lastly we have the most rare type and that is long blade there are only two weapons that fit into this category in vanilla and that is a katana and machete both of these weapons are exceedingly rare so building a character around these is a bit of a mute point though the one good thing is that the damage is so high with these things you don't really need to level them in order to absolutely clear some hordes out not much else to say aside from that [Music] welcome to the junkyard instead of just talking about it i thought it'd be a lot easier to actually demonstrate it and some live uh gameplay and here we are so we are joined by bamboo here an absolute clean slate of a character so i can just demonstrate that this is able to be done with every single character out there so long as you don't have any less than 5 fitness and 5 strength so we're going to be starting off with some of the basics which is going to be me fighting against around 7 zombies with a griddle iron you can find these in just about every house and by no means are these powerful weapons so yeah let's just spawn in the horde and begin alrighty we got the 8 zombies spawned in and before we even start fighting we just want to make sure that our surroundings are clear and that we're not going to get snuck up on while fighting these zombies now when we do deal with a group like this what we're gonna try and do is slowly dance in and out of their awareness so we're gonna crouch down try and be as stealthy as possible and we're slowly gonna approach the group and try to get the aggro of just a couple just so we're not fighting all of them at once and it does look like we have gotten the aggro of one zombie now while we are fighting zombies we always want to be on the move we always want to be strafing even if there's only a couple you don't want to stand still and swing as that's gonna probably kill you off now one thing that you actually can do is shove a zombie over and you can actually stand on top of it this allows you full control over the zombie you can do whatever you want you can read a book you can eat food and this is especially good if we're fighting let's say two to three zombies because by pushing one over and standing on top of it you essentially turn that 3v1 into a 2v1 and as you see as we step off she can get back up but we're just going to dispatch her we're gonna shove her over and we're gonna hit her in the head with a griddle iron now we can continue to try and get the aggro of more of the zombies it looks like we've gotten two up actually that's gonna be four okay so this is gonna be a little bit higher stakes but what we're gonna try and do is just shove him over and we're gonna take him out before the rest can get to us ah that's not gonna happen so we're gonna get out of sneak mode and we're gonna run away a little bit we're gonna get a little bit of distance and so now what we're gonna do is slowly back up hit a zombie once and run away really fast all right we're going to try not to die here and we're just always going to back up and swing as much as possible alternate between swinging and shoving as well because shoving is a little bit quicker than swinging but swinging staggers a zombie for a whole lot longer we're not gonna get too greedy with our uh damage we're just gonna hit once and run away really quick hit once run away and now we got him in a nice line here which allows us to actually swing a whole lot more because they're a lot more staggered out which gives us a lot more time to swing and hit there we go as you see every single hit that we get is kind of like loosening a bottle cap right these zombies only can take like five to seven swings from this griddle iron so as long as our durability and our stamina stays well we can continue doing this for quite a while just slowly running away backing up making sure we're not gonna die here now whenever you do back up you always wanna make sure that you're jogging because when you're jogging your character actually bumps into a zombie like that which can save your life so let's say you whiff a swing you can hurry up jog away and as you see it actually stunned the zombie behind me you can do this almost all the time and it's a heck of a lot better than just walking backwards let me show you that one more time we're gonna wait for these zombies to get to our back and then we're gonna jog off you see you stun that first zombie that actually was supposed to take a chunk out of you so this can be really helpful for when you're fighting a group and you accidentally make a mistake so now we're just gonna take out the rest of this horde by slowly backing up hitting once jogging away a little bit okay now that we dealt with that group of fate we're gonna fight the same eight but this time all at once and here we are we got all eight coming in after us and so this is gonna be a little bit more high stakes than just fighting for so we're just gonna continue to do the same thing and just slowly back up while hitting and then running away this time we're not going to be able to get as many hits in we're probably only going to be able to get one in before they start to swarm us so we're just going to slowly run away turn around hit and then run away again now you always want to check behind you to make sure that you aren't going to get snuck up on as well because you can tunnel vision pretty hard while doing this and it really does suck when a zombie does come up behind you so yeah rick's gonna hit once jog away this is gonna take quite a while but this is a very safe way of taking out zombies so yeah this is basically becoming a battle of endurance and this is why you do need to keep an eye on your stats because it is very easy to get exhausted when you are doing this with like more than 10 zombies oh yeah another thing you want to be pretty leisurely on your jog i only really jog once as soon as i get away from the horde and then i start walking again that way you can conserve your stamina just a tiny bit more instead of just jogging everywhere now if you're doing this at your starting house i highly suggest running around your starting house as well because zombies will get caught up on the windows and doors and you'll be able to lose them a little bit easier and just like that the horde has been dealt with with just a griddle iron one of the worst weapons now that we killed off two groups with a griddle iron i think it's about time we bump up the numbers and we bump up the tier of weapon we're gonna use we're gonna be using a long blunt baseball bat and a hunting knife against around 20 zombies which is quite the increase okay we got 20 zombies down here we got our baseball bat and we have our secondary knife so we're just gonna approach the horde and just do exactly what we do right we're gonna hit a zombie and slowly jog away now as the horde does approach they're gonna be less condensed which allows us to get in like a couple of swings before we need to run away but you still need to be very cautious with it because it is very easy to die here so we're just gonna keep on running in a circle making sure no it's coming up behind us and hitting away at the zombie horde using a baseball bat will exhaust our character a little bit more but that's why we have our secondary so yeah this is gonna be quite the battle especially since we're not using any environmental factors but if we slowly swing and slowly walk away and try to conserve stamin as much as possible this group should be no problem for us there we go we got our first kill okay so we've hit these zombies a few times with our baseball bat and you see that we're getting a little bit of moderate exertion so this is actually where our knife comes in with it being such low weight we're gonna be able to use this and regain some of our stamina back while our baseball bat sits on our back so what we're gonna do is just stab once and then continue to jog back using this weapon will allow us to go a whole lot longer without running out of stamina and since we've already weakened quite a bit of the horde with the baseball bat this should be pretty easy to sweep up a few of them with just a knife here and remember we are at zero skills for every single thing other than our fitness and strength which is completely default so this is very possible on just about every character of course practice makes perfect so i honestly recommend just spawning into a world giving yourself a couple weapons and just trying to clear out the neighborhood and once you do get the hang of it fighting zombies becomes just second nature and you'll be able to take out a whole lot more and feel a whole lot more confident which may or may not be a good thing right but yeah we're just gonna hit and jog away it's that simple now you could probably get away with just walking away after you hit but i really do like jogging as it gives you that little extra safety net okay and now that group of 20 is now just a pitiful force so we can pull out our baseball bat and probably finish him off by just slowly backing up shoving and swinging and there we go we cleared out that group of 20. all we had to do was just slowly back up hit once jog away and whenever a character got exhausted we pulled out a lighter weapon such as this knife here we stabbed and we did the same exact thing just leading them in a circle and we've taken them all out but yeah it is possible to fight this amount of zombies now if you don't have a knife you could also use a hammer which also weighs a lot less than a baseball bat just keep it in mind another cool little fact is that you can bump into a zombie around three times before you actually get pulled down but if there's a zombie in front of you you can hurry up stab them and then run right through them without getting a bump just something to keep in mind i really love using that when i am training hordes as well okay so now we have another hoard of 20 to deal with and as you see we have fences we have a couple of cars and we have a building to start off with we're going to get the aggro of all these zombies here okay now that we have the group of 20 on us we're going to be using the building first to try and separate them as much as possible so what we're going to do as we're at this building is we're going to enable snake mode and we're going to follow the wall of this building very closely until we go over at the other side this is gonna allow zombies to get caught up on windows get caught up on doors anything that they can break they're gonna get caught up on which then gives us a smaller amount to deal with while the majority is actually inside that house as you see i just went from fighting that group of 20 at once to only fighting five or so at once which gives me a lot of advantage to capitalize on it so what we're gonna do is just slowly back up hit them with the baseball bat the beautiful thing about the bat is that knocked on potential and we're gonna be able to weaken up this small group very nicely there we go as you see it's a lot easier to fight these smaller groups while the rest of the horde does lie inside i'll give this just a few more swings and that's going to be seven less zombies we need to really worry about bada bam so we're going to lead this group of zombies back over towards the vehicles now though now the cool thing about vehicles is that it kind of messes with the zombie pathfinding should we stay close enough to it so if we just hug this vehicle as you see the zombies really like getting caught up on it and so this really does help out because the zombies really like to move in single file lines when they are coming across these vehicles which gives us a lot of time to actually get in a lot more hits instead of just running away immediately and we can just continue doing this over and over so all we're gonna do is just slowly walk over to a vehicle and hug the wall of it which should decrease the amount that we're going to be fighting in a row this is a really good way of staggering them out and fighting them briefly and then running away as the horde continues to join back together so yeah we're just gonna continue doing this for vehicles just for a tiny bit longer just running across the edge and trying to separate them as much as possible here there we go is [Music] all right we've killed quite a chunk of them and now there's only like eight or so left and i just wanted to showcase one more funny thing as you see there's actually zombies stuck under the truck that does happen from time to time when you do train around these which is uh pretty hilarious but last but not least we actually do have these uh fences here now i really don't like using fences to fight hordes mostly because fighting with these is very inconsistent and it also exhausts your character a lot more by climbing behind these fences but it is very useful to stagger out hordes and make them slow down quite a bit especially when you're dealing with sprinters but uh there's a few things you need to be wary for and this also goes for windows as well but one thing is for certain you can get in a free hit when you do hop over a fence you just need to be very wary about lunges so you can get in a free hit there and there and then run away before that guy goes at your ankles because if he does get a hit uh you're you're probably gonna die all right so yeah just gotta watch out for those lunges but overall it is very nice to just kind of separate them you can get in a free hit there and then run away it's a little bit safer but it's not too useful though when you do lower the numbers by quite a bit it does become a lot more valid you wouldn't be able to do this normally if you had let's say 20 zombies but this is a really good way to deal with like an early amount of ports and as you see they actually got in a lunge there and you really don't want to be at the receiving end of it but yeah there's only like four or five zombies left so we can take them out pretty easily now you can also use trees but i would say trees are a lot better at just losing zombies and actually fighting through them but there we go we took out another group of 20 with just a little bit of exhaustion to go with it so yeah hopefully you all have learned something new today at least with the melee i'm not sure how well i was able to demonstrate some of the stuff inside the actual combat as it is very tricky and hard to actually get a grasp on what you need to do really is just hop into a sandbox game start with a weapon kit and just continue fighting zombies with melee until you get very comfortable and then suspend that comfortability because that's what's probably gonna get you killed anyways i hope you all have learned something new today i'm just gonna take out the last person here but yeah anyways i hope you all have good days today uh be sure to like favorite share subscribe for more especially if you did learn something and if i did forget to say something about combat that's very important be sure to let me know down in the comments below anyways this is private lime
