ah this map is so cute you can see from one end to the other if you zoom all the way out what am i getting into here we are with timber born we are back in the hard mode but this time playing on diorama which is the game's smallest map 50 spaces by 50 spaces we are going to have to utilize every single inch of space to be able to survive here on hard difficulty gonna have to pull out every single trick that i know how to be able to weasel out of this one we have a series of critical paths that we have to hit to be able to succeed here one is going to be getting a dam up that is going to be serviceable to prevent us from just dying out in the very first drought and it means that we're going to have to postpone building shelter for our beavers which is going to put a little bit of a damper on things we are playing as the folk tales so having housing available is crucial for them to be able to maintain their population but i felt that overall the folk tales had a number of benefits i was going to make doing this challenge on the tiny map easier because they are more efficient in terms of their farm space once you get the beehive and also more efficient in terms of power production with the windmills at least in terms of space at least in terms of space but i was taking those advantages over the iron teeth's advantage in having more efficient housing oh ho almost forgot to get the inventor down as soon as we get the damn i'm actually going to put priority on the inventor because we have a whole lot that we need to research we need to get access to the forester extremely quickly otherwise we hit the bottleneck of running out of wood on the map there really is not much forest here on diorama map is tiny so what would you expect damn complete and that is going to be able to maintain water through our initial droughts we don't even have the water tank up right now so there's no standing stockpile we just have to be able to maintain a water in the river throughout this first route which the first route i i think that is set at being fairly short and manageable even here on hard mode but things are going to ramp up very quickly so we have to stay on the ball in terms of advancing and being able to build up a reservoir as we start to like plan ahead here on where the next reservoir is going to go we have this naturally built up a bank on this side being able to gradually expand that deeper and deeper it's going to require building levees on this side which is going to need to remove these berry bushes sadly but we're going to be transitioning to a farmhouse to be able to have our own production of food which um we could go for it right now but we also want to be able to get our housing up there it is three days until the very first route the wasting no time drought has begun it's going to run for five days i think our reservoir is going to be able to hold out there we've cleared this for us all the way to get a path up to be able to clear this upper forest and then unfortunately even though we have a natural land stair over here we don't have one to be able to get up here so we have the bottleneck of science points to be able to unlock anything more forester is 60 so we are able to just get that right now which we're going to go for but the critical thing here is that this requires planks so we're going to have to go into industry right now lumber mill powered by a power wheel isn't necessarily the most advanced trick that we can pull but it is a start and that's all we need to be able to start getting these higher level buildings oh no did we wait too long on getting food up seeing the hunger symbols over a number of our beavers uh no deaths yet no deaths yet and the carrot crop is at 95 percent we might be able to just squeak this one out without any deaths i really don't want to lose any valuable workers this early and the harvest is coming in just in time i think we're going to be able to squeak this one out but we need uh keep on juggling people around man the power wheel i don't need somebody working this either still nobody you're not gonna be doing anything either this is the long waiting portion of the game where we just watch our maple seedlings grow we're at 35 now it takes forever but once we get it we're going to be able to have access again to all of our building supplies and can really start taking over the map right now we're just trying to break out and harvest all of the available trees i don't know if we're going to be able to get up here and get to these maples they are maples which makes them pretty enticing but it's gonna take one heck of a network of stairs to be able to get all the way up here we're gonna go for these which unfortunately are just birch trees we can find some maples over here which is a little bit encouraging we'll be able to get around there without too much trouble work on the levee has begun i know that the game is not going to wait around to let us scale up before it smacks us with the big droughts we need to be able to enhance this reservoir and that's going to require a lovely wall all along this coast of the river the question is do we bank up these science points to be able to go all the way to the triple floodgate envisioning in the future when we're gonna go for an extra deep reservoir or do we try and get a quick double floodgate i think accruing 500 science points is going to be fine in terms of the timing of when we will have uh the levee wall finished uh here we are planting our aqua tonic blueberries down here in the duranoff right after our reservoir so the hiccup with pudding marking like crops trees berries etc etc for areas that will be submerged at least part of the time they will continue to progress in terms of development even if they are under water but you cannot replant if they are under water so my take then is that the best pick to what to plant here is the blueberries because unlike everything else after being harvested they do not require being re-planted they can just continue their cycle to develop new berries and now they are not the most efficient source of food but being able to have an extra source of food in a area of space that we would otherwise not be able to use for anything really is an advantage to us we're trying to just hinge our pennies make it out of here on this crazy map and 500 we got the triple floodgates expensive but i think better than having to build and then replace but we're gonna have to turn back on the lumber mill and the improved or the little power wheel here to be able to get enough planks and i think we're gonna run out of building supplies very quickly here how close are our maple seedlings ah 83 percent still like another day or two we got trickle of some other lumber but not a lot not a lot at all here we go blueberries progressing nicely and then eventually we'll be able to drain this portion of the river and plant more blueberries over there and then that is entirely within range of this gatherer flag so when we repurpose this area i assume for farmland would be the best use that we could take for that um it could be something else as well and put more farmland down here with some other form of irrigation to be able to get down to it because that's getting kind of removed from the reservoir we could also turn this into farmland it would be very reliable because that is where we are establishing our main reservoir that's likely what will happen is these berry bushes will be repurposed into more high yield farmland then the question is what kind of crops do we produce because i believe that wheat is the most efficient but at least in terms of time to produce like growing time versus how much food it outputs but you have to have the additional peripheral refinement processes of the gristmill and then the bakery which are going to take up more space and the gristmill is also going to require power so that's even more etc etc it's not that we are so pinched for space that we couldn't do that it's just more of a future thing we probably go for carrots first and then we could transition into wheat once we build up the rest of the infrastructure that is required i think that if we are smart enough with how much verticality we build and particularly our housing and our storage then even though this is the tiniest map we should be able to do just fine hey our first maples have come of age but two and a half days until the drought i don't think the floodgates are gonna come online in time uh we're gonna have to be able to weather this one with just the basic dam that we have set up one thing about the folk tales housing is that it actually doesn't get any more space efficient as you do the upgrades so we're just going to save on the science points here and as long as we are intelligent and how we build our staircases up what the only thing that it saves you on is having fewer doorways that you have to connect so it does get a little bit it does get a little bit more efficient and you can also build the higher tiers in the water because they're doorway doors or buildings are only considered to be submerged or disabled because they're underwater if the water level rises above the doorway of the building so having the doorway on the second story of the double lodge and the triple lodge means that you are actually able you can put it so that the base level would otherwise be underwater and it'll do just fine the reservoir runs dry with four days to go and we only have 90 water in the bank yeah this is going to be very tight those floodgates going for the level twos would have been cheaper to build is that going to be our downfall the water reserves run dry with one day to go i think i think we make it out of this the drought has ended yes uh that was actually and go to who goes one two three four five six six unfortunate deaths of this much closer call than i wanted it to be that is for sure now we got to redistribute the workers so that uh yeah we don't need lumberjacks right now we need to be able to working on all the other critical critical portions okay now we can start building up the reservoir now my understanding of how aesthetics works here is that if we build a decoration that attaches to the building and then it's going to apply the aesthetics boost to the entire building and so it's because it's tied to all of our housing it should supply aesthetics for all of the beefers in the entire district and if you look here at the effective aesthetics we'll get a 10 working speed just by putting down this single roof tile so yeah bump up that and we'll take the 10 across the colony hey it's kind of working the way i thought it would maybe it doesn't actually apply to the entire building it could just be the radius that it shows i thought it's still because it highlights the building um interesting but if it really did apply to the entire building then i would expect aesthetics to be supplied for all of the beavers in the colony as it is half of them have to pass by it to be able to get to their doorways so i think that is what is triggering it maybe i should have gone a little bigger picked up one of these larger roofs all right we didn't install these triple floodgates to have a tiny reservoir back here so we are building up we're going to have to blockade the edge of the map so that we don't get run off out of there i have a wall of levees that'll go up out there and then we're going to have to retool this section so much flooding now that we have standard water flow restored we're going to retool this section so that we have a lovely wall extending and then we can use there's a next level of the build-up bank to be able to extend the reservoir to the max that the floodgates are going to allow us to have though we could then build another level on top of that pull the floodgates all the way up get an extra half level out of things i mean it'll be worth it we'll do it eventually we would like to go even higher and then try and finagle being able to keep this reservoir a little bit deeper and then ultimately bring in the dynamite blast out more storage volume we have a long way to go to be able to get that our plank production just cannot seem to keep up oh 13 days to survive this drought that's the longest we've faced yet though last time we weathered it just fine with the extended reservoir it was a super short one though they gave us like a nine and then a six give us the off drought this one's gonna be a real test i think we make it though oh no the drought extended long enough that we lost everything in the fields so now waiting for the crops to come back around our storehouses are completely depleted of food and we're just surviving on blueberries back to the good old days it's like we'll just play we'll just be camping eat camp food snack on the blueberries another one dies no my population just rebalanced this this mode is brutal okay 10 day drought this time we can handle that that'll be no problem with the extended reservoir current project is to be able to build up this additional wall so that we can go yet a tile deeper if the block off from here to be able to keep it from running off the map again and this reservoir just feels really small but then again the map is small and my population is small so it should all balance out except the evaporation coefficient is still going to steal away my water just with the longer and longer droughts so we're also trying to build up the gear workshop go progress toward getting dynamite and then we can carve this out to have as much volume of water as possible the forester is pretty well balanced uh the lumberjacks are really not even getting to the back and i could always build more lumberjacks but right now i don't have any any expendable population so we are leaving it as it is and i'm also not short on lumber so that's fine the bottleneck is planks so many of my buildings require planks but i have actually i could go for an additional lumber mill here but i kind of want to make this a location for a paper mill so i've held off maybe longer than i should have which one dry okay give it a little bit more here keep these going as long as possible keep the crops green as long as possible so we recover we're finally we're banking a lot we're back up basically to where we lost things because with the second farmhouse online we produce more than enough more than enough food to be able to sustain our meager population at some point here we're gonna need to start looking at acquiring metal to be able to get down the uh landscaping yeah we need the metal blocks for the explosives factory we don't need a lot but we do need some and i mean ultimately if we wanted to go all the way up to oh the large windmill doesn't require metal blocks wow folktales just don't use metal that much i guess they need gears and paper on that so it's not that that large windmill is expensive it's just doesn't require the metal there's a lot of science points just to be able to pick up the 30 metal blocks needed for the explosives factory after that honestly we turned do we turn it off the other things that they use it for are being able to get the large suspension bridges i mean sure if you have some in the bank for those that's fine ah the printing press also needs it but i think that's all obviously the shredder needs scrap metal but yeah those are the only requirements interesting oh if you want if we wanted to build the carousel we would also need more metal so getting getting metal up is going to be useful all around but it's not quite like the iron teeth where to be able to build their engines they need a lot oh my gosh for the first time a drought ended and we still have water in the reservoir jubilation breaks out amongst beaver city well we've time lapsed a little bit a lot actually and now we have dynamite so this tiny little world is now in the palm of our hands drought coming up in a day and a half so while it is easier to be able to build out larger reservoirs by blowing out the top levels first we need to be able to just extend every bit of volume that we can while we can here that's the goal right now [Music] it looks like the explosions actually threw runoff over the dam wall all our blasting has really turned this into a much more significant reservoir we have a drought coming up in half a day to be able to test our new reserves against what hard mode here can throw against us we still have a few levels down to go to be able to increase the volume here but at this point gains in terms of the percentage of volume we're going to be increasing the reservoir it's going to be meaningful but it's not going to be too great here the next step will also be to clear away all the scrap metal from on top here and be able to dig out this corner but again if you look at the size of the overall reservoir versus what this corner is holding out um it's not going to be much of an increase for the reservoir i think for being able to gain a more meaningful increase they're throwing us a 14 day drought here i was able to survive a 20-day drought earlier with a smaller reservoir so this should be no sweat we've also upgraded the dams over here to a floodgate so that we can actually bottle it up to a full height of one rather than having it spill off once it gets to like point six point seven with the dam i would actually like to see building a second runoff cutting it through here and then building up levees all around here to make this kind of a basin to be able to hold additional water for us though right now that doesn't seem to be necessary our wind farm is working really well to be able to be the heart of industry here these guys are actually really efficient in terms of the space that they take up which is awesome for this map the engines so the the confliction is that you can't build another windmill within two spaces of one and you could pack in a number of the iron teeth engines in this area but then they're going to be consuming so much logs for fuel that you would need to have a much larger area to be able to be growing trees having foresters irrigate that whole area have the lumberjack flags and all the haulers to be able to supply the engines and so then your industry runs without any interruption which is incredibly convenient but in terms of just saving space and also population on this tiny little map the windmills are doing great for us and we're slowly upgrading them you can see there's the difference the the little ones and the big ones here the awesome thing about the large windmills is that there's actually times where the wind scales down to the point that the small ones are not running at all but the large ones are able to run there they all stopped at once but hopefully i'll get a snippet to be able to show off where the uh the large one is running and the small ones aren't now as we ration out the water from the main reservoir into the water pumps and the irrigation it's a little bit finicky to make sure that we don't overflow and waste water but that is how it is right now i think that as we move forward we're going to actually want to shift the water pumps over to be right on the edge of the main reservoir and then we get hit with a drawback of the folktales and that we're going to have to have layers of water pumps descending down into the reservoir because they can only pump out water from the depth of two spaces and right now our reservoir is four spaces deep i believe because yeah we have the triple floodgates and we have a layer on top of that so we're gonna have to have two layers of the water pumps to keep on servicing water as we descend and then if we made like an ultra deep reservoir over here i'm actually envisioning building up levees to the point of this height and then going all the way around we'll see how practical or how well that actually works we're gonna hit a bottleneck of just how much water is actually produced between droughts from these two water sources only having two water sources means that there's kind of an absolute limit of the amount of water that we're able to bring in in between droughts drought handled with plenty of space to spare but there will be longer ones coming so we're going to have to make sure that we are going to be prepared and we'll eventually clear out all the roads here the paths but i want to be able to utilize this area and so to be able to get water flow from one side to the other if we start dynamiting down then we're going to need to have um a gap that the water will be able to pass under we're going to set that up now just very quickly and then be able to kind of rapidly work our way through dynamiting all of this space and safe way to do it is to run a path out so that the workers are able to reach everything and then once you lay in all the dynamite take the path away put dynamite over those spaces it comes the whole process that shows though that we are able to sustain ourselves off of this reservoir so water is not a problem for us right now our food supplies have been going up and up our industry is thriving so i think it is time to hit this tiny map with a population boom and challenge ourselves to be able to see just how large of a population we are going to be able to support out of diorama uh my guess my guess is that the true bottleneck is going to be how much water is created by the only two water sources and there's only so much you can do to be able to mitigate that there's kind of an absolute population that is going to be able to live oh my gosh throw the floodgates down don't don't flood the city just yet there's kind of a absolute limit to what population can be supported off of only two water sources but we're gonna find out exactly what that limit is in the next episode thank you guys for watching let me know down in the comments if you have any tips on how we can potentially maximize our population here on diorama hope to see you guys in the next episode you
