Pixar Is DEAD...(just kidding, Inside Out 2 made like a BAJILLION dollars)

[Music] inside out two a last ditch effort to save the sinking ship that is Pixar like apparently if this movie does not perform well in the box office your childhood is dead yeah all of it it just never existed it is now in the ground along with Coco H well that sounds a bit drastic but if you read the articles online and administer poison to yourself via Twitter hyperbole you might have caught a similar impression Pixar is just not hitting the same home runs that they used to there are times of cruel mistress you got folks who are saying stuff like oh yeah Pixar it's not as good as it once was with films like Wall-E and I'm like yeah Wall-E well when did that come out and they're like oh just a few years oh my God 2008 now as much as we'd like to stay in the 2000s we got to accept facts that time waits for no one and that includes Pixar the 2010s was the decade that made people realize that this once infallible Studio could as a matter of fact bleed the good dinosaur was a dud along with onward and critically of course uh there's cars too but then a little something came along that was a once in a-lifetime event which gets really old after already having a once- in a-lifetime event in 2001 or remove the the World Trade Center from the New York City skyline but yeah Co in 2020 after that the movie industry in general found itself between a rock and a hard place why go to expensive movies when you can just watch said movies on streaming you got movie Executives who are like oh oh oh what did we do in the effort of building a streaming platform these movie companies let the genie out of the bottle by giving audiences another option why watch movies in all for movie theater we can just you know wait I prefer Magneto are you good or bad Magneto make up your mind and now the burden falls on theatrical releases yes the movies themselves are the problem not inflation not multiple poor business models not greedy Executives who undercut artists it's the movie that's a fault and oh boy inside out too do you have a lot rting on you for the record I am working on a video currently about the state of Pixar as a studio along with its history and possible future but that will see the light of day next year along with Caleb and Sophia maybe I don't know for now we're going to just talk about inside out too the stakes are high the shareholders are pissed and the artists already assuming the position of taking the blame for business Executives clearly turning red was the problem and we need more sequels from Pixar films to SA save things no what are you talking about Lightyear clearly that was a misfire and Toy Story 5 will fix everything God damn it I'm getting tired of this no joke I fell asleep while watching Lightyear it was that boring I closed my eyes and I I have a LoveHate relationship with movie theaters in March of 2024 I watched Dune part two in an IMAX and it brought me to tears it was that amazing the audience was respectful and fantastic for inside out too there was an audience of families kids and their parents and yeah you got kids talking I I expect that I'm not surprised surprised I don't like it but what can you do but I saw furiosa a week before that and had the worst movie experience in my life there were five adults behind me riffing on the film loudly the entire way through I told them to shut the up and that did not work uh so all in all a terrible experience that reinforce why movies suck and are way too expensive for such a likely outcome I can't control that even if I get the manager the the movie is ruined for me I can't not think about this awkward exchange I just had okay what are we talking about now Inside Out 2 okay let's talk about that well the good news for Disney is the following the theater I went to had people there just before recording this video I saw an article saying that they smashed past $150 million this weekend during the film's premiere so yeah I I guess that's a good sign for Pixar and was probably a good call to bump ilio to another release date since that Pixar movie was slated for release in March of 2024 again it sucks because a lot of the recent Pixar films aren't bad but they are not Financial hits compared to the 2010 releases it's an unfair burden but I guess it's enough of an excuse for Pixar and Disney to say hm I guess the movies are the problem and nothing else back to the sequels or prequels or reboots or whatever a poor turning red you deserved so much better you too Elemental I was far too harsh on you so now you have inside out to being pushed to an earlier release which is not a bad idea necessarily this summer feels kind of empty with theatrical releases so hey why not any sequels do have the advantage of brand awareness the first Inside Out released in 2015 and directed by Pete doctor the current head of Pixar was a Smash Hit and made nearly a billion dollars in theaters and it felt like the perfect addition to the Pixar lexicon of ips for those who don't know the movie is about a little girl named Riley She's like 11 or something and she has five anthropomorphic characters that represent the five emotions of her mind Joy sadness anger disgust and fear along with other silly World building that makes up the very essence of her being right is Riley even Riley or is she just a vessel for these beings that control her do these emotions have emotions apparently the answer is yes since Joy cries in the first and second film is anything real are we just Mindless beings made up of smaller beings that are just as insignificant as the sum of our parts best not overthink it seriously the world of insight out is ripe with continuity errors and logistical fallacies but who cares if you get too stuck on these semantics the movie setting kind of falls apart I best to just enjoy it as is and I mean that as far as the first movie goes it's about Riley moving to San Francisco and feeling dead on the inside I get it it's valid Jokes Aside she feels alone after moving and struggles with letting out her sorrow all the while Joy the main emotion of Riley is trying to keep the sadness out only to realize that sadness serves a purpose and helping people to feel what they need to feel it is not a bad emotion necessarily it's just an emotion we feel due to circumstances and one that should not be denied overall Inside Out was a strong Contender for Pixar especially as an original property definitely one of these standouts of the 2010s oh bing bong rip rip and tear until it is done it's a reference you you you don't have to get it all and the second movie which was written and directed by Kelsey man along with writing credits to Meg laav and Dave Holstein we find Riley as a teenager and how she is once again having some isolation issues with her friends except this time it's at a hockey Camp there are apparently hockey camps Riley discovered that her friends won't be at her school after Camp is over and in the process of these events she finds herself with new emotions embarrassment Envy inuy and anxiety now let's address the elephant in the room where were the emotions in the first movie I guess one could argue that these emotions are are vacant and a blissful child but what about the parents now they kind of answer these questions in the movie but not like too much I guess less is more kind of approach and it is what it is moving on and to be fair these emotions that show up seem tailor made for teens and what they're feeling during puberty anxiety oh oh yeah absolutely embarrassment you beta the Inside Out Universe has always been pretty clever and fun with relatable jokes about emotions and functions of the mind like when Nostalgia showed up and the other emotions said we won't need you until like 10 years from now and after a friend's wedding yeah that that joke got me got a big laugh out of me though I wish they would have stayed with the original concept of the nostalgic critic being the movie I wish it didn't scrap that so for the overall plot and spoilers ahead if you can't tell anxiety and the new emotions take over Riley and kick out the previous emotions there's also some plot device about Riley developing beliefs which somewhat function like U the memory orbs from the first movie again I have to constantly tell myself to not overthink things it's rly just a a Mech controlled by anthro motions or does Riley exist as an autonomous being now kind of hard to argue the latter of the two when ingredients like memory orbs form Riley's Essence as a person but you know who cares who who cares you know don't overthink it especially that once more the emotions themselves are capable of emotions that aren't their defining emotions you know if we can go even deeper for example did Hitler have little did Hitler have little emotions in his head you know what with little Hitler mustaches I'm going somewhere with this all right it gets even Wilder when you realize that there was an animated short from Disney in 1943 called reason and emotion which was allegedly cited as an inspiration for inside out for Pete doctor look there's an article that says this and who was in the short oh it begins with the letter H Degrees of Separation is not just about my parents divorce apparently so what were my thoughts about inside out too personally I thought the movement of the characters felt more energetic in the first film especially with joy she was so silly and all over the place but I guess one could argue writing wise that she's more even killed due to the events of the first film she was a control freak in denial and inside out one but in this movie she's just in denial I say that cuz she like built this machine that launches bad memories that should be trash into the back of the Mind so kind of similar to how she had arbitrary rule of her core memories in the first film I mean she doesn't seem as uptight about her emotions being the primary ones this time around but she still does filter emotions that she deems as unworthy all in all a little derivative but there's enough continuity of her being less selfish in the sequel compared to the first movie but no no anxiety is now in control of the Mind along with the new emotions and is trying to desperately get the Adoration of the cool hockey girls and also get onto the team Riley's new emotions are also doing this so she can put her old traitorous friends behind her since they're dead to her I'm paraphrasing but yeah she's focusing on the future hence why anxiety is in control it's an emotion that worries about things that could be and how to avoid that fate now Joey Joey Joey has to stop anxiety and help Riley not sabotage her old friendship and the efforts of making new friends why cuz Riley is a good person that is again the result of Joy trying to guide Riley with her good memories and how it forms a core belief this is why when anxiety takes over this core belief of selfhood is challenged so significantly and gets taken over by the belief of not being good enough Joy has to learn that Riley can't be shaped by her emotions alone and that all all of her memories both good and bad Define who Riley is as a person this is a great resolution for both Joy and anxiety to learn that no matter how much they want to protect Riley they have to let her go this feels like a very mature story beat I really like it so all in all the story was very good I was much more interested in Riley's predicament as a budding young adult more than her challenges as a child in the previous film it's a more complicated plot and I like that also the pacing was very Snappy almost a little too good I kind of wanted a few slower moments to breathe but hey I will take brevity over idleness any day there was even a moment that got me teed when Joy Was Defeated and was like I guess you just feel less joy as you grow up I heard this six-year-old in the audience crack open their beer and say preach sister but yeah I that that line was one of the defining moments of the film and it spoke to me visually I was very happy this see the different animation Styles and designs of the characters in this film now I know some folks did not like anxiety but I think she works her design is kind of like a muppet in a way also I laughed very hard during the scene with Bluey which was an obvious homage to both Bluey and Dora the Explorer also great voice casting too across the board and the anime boy in this scene was just hilarious seeing that kind of representation and references to anime and video games just drives home the point that Millennials are without a doubt working at Pixar now which is very surreal to me got Super Smash Brothers reference and Cloud reference come on we're we are so back boys uh overall inside out to was a worthy sequel to the original movie and was in my opinion even better than the first both in pacing and plot-wise the first movie is great and no pun intended emotional but the stakes in the sequel are more interesting to me personally now the second film could not obviously exist without the first one building its world but the sequel builds upon the first movie and be very fun and engaging way also Riley feels less like a robot in the sequel compared to the first film thanks to the introduction of the belief system now is it perfect no and again uh the more you think about the logistics of the world the less it makes sense turn off your brain and enjoy the film for what it is and as far as the future of Pixar goes yeah I don't envy it they got some big shoes to fill and it seems like Disney's mandate is ordering a return to sequels prequels and reboots that the original ideas are being thrown under the bus when in reality it wasn't the fault of the movies it was the circumstances of theaters streaming inflation and the impact of Co now I'm going to keep researching and cooking on my new Pixar video but the studio has definitely found itself at a crossroad where it desperately needed a win well inside out to be that win only time will tell but hey what did you all think of the
