This HTTYD Ripoff Is TERRIBLE...

[Music] Dragon Rider AKA fire Drake The Silver Dragon is a Netflix animated movie that looks suspiciously like another popular movie about dragons yes I'm talking about The Hobbit the desolation of smog I will show you uh but actually How to Train Your Dragon the original movie from Dreamworks is one of the best in their catalog by a long shot a Bonafide hit that I have watched dozens of times before the test flight scene with Hiccup and Toothless it gives me goosebumps every single time but then you got Dragon Rider a film that is as self-aware as it is lame yes we get it your movie might seem like a ripoff of How to train your dragon with its post and title and subject matter so how do you deflect this impending criticism why you make fun of yourself before the viewers do you're with the movie right now I can't appreciate the self-deprecating humor but it can only get you so far until you need you know a good story of your own how does your dragon match up to toothless spoiler alert not so great fire Drake you have to stop your intentions are too boring your face too lame your fire too cold your furry sidekick too ignored they will kill you the only good parts about this movie are sorl the dear Fox girl thing side character yeah that one right over there and then there's nettle brand the villain who is voiced by Sir Patrick Stewart you know the the guy from that thing what's it called American Dad say do you P chance have any Gatorade I'm afraid I left all my electrolytes with your daughter now the design and the animation for this character it's pretty damn awesome I have to admit but the writing for him not so much eating dragons oh and golf and feeling the soft Summer Breeze on my face and eating dragons so join me folks on this little review as I talk this the movie has a screenplay based on a book of the same name a book written by Cornelia funk in 1997 6 years before the first how Dragon book so logically dragon riter is not a ripoff or at least the book isn't the movie though I wouldn't say it's a ripoff per se but it definitely is not 100% original either obviously the film exists because of the movie adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon which is why it leans so heavily into acknowledging that fact and channeling the same energy in its marketing but Tit for Tat I would not say that Dragon Rider is a carbon copy of how to train your Dragon the story is different enough as you'll soon find out and not in a good way it's like woo thank God it's not a ripoff but what's it about then the answer everything and nothing at the same time by the way these Studios behind the production of Dragon Rider include Constantine film rise FX cyborn and Timeless films and once more Netflix acting as as the distributor now the film was released in theaters in 2020 in Europe but it was a disappointing return on investment with around 6.5 million EUR at the box office all in all a whimper of a release and critically uh you're about to find out so what's the movie about well it starts off with an After Effects intro with that old trit and true a long long time ago Prelude that tells us about humans and dragons living in harmony within finding themselves at War why because humans suck and are greedy that's why they suck so hard that some mad scientist human creates a monster made of metal called nettle brand sounds like a nestly tea offbrand nettle here then killed most of the dragons with the remaining one surviving to the modern day and a Meek little community in uh Forest there we meet our main character fire Drake he's a yeah I said it he's got no fire he can't fly the only thing going for our guy here is that he has a best friend named Soro a forest uh brownie yeah that's what they're called brownies some fantasy creature that's like a deer meets a fox feels like she's straight out of a Spyro game or Ratchet and Clank as a matter of fact this entire movie gives me video game cutscene Vibes oh no humans are here what will the dragons do fire Drake had heard of a safe utopian home called the rim of heaven and sets off with sorl to go find it by the way he can't fly until he does for the first time effortlessly wow such good storytelling on the edge of my seat so fire Drake and sorl end up in a city just you know City I'm not sure where it's a city stop ask asking questions there they make their self aware how to turn your dragon joke you see you see it's a movie premiere for how to dring your dragon on on the poster it says how to tame your [Applause] dragon there's also Ben the human Thief boy who I hate look at his little pupils the pupils on the humans are too all I don't like them makes them all look they're cracked out I don't like these human designs Dragon fine Soro fine humans bad yeah you know how you got those bad boy characters who are devious and smarmy get like endearing and have a great heart of gold under their tough exterior yeah that's not the case here this guy is annoying through and through he joins the de because of money that's it that's his motive money what talent I can read your mind then you'll know what I'm thinking the N Trio of characters find themselves miraculously near the castle of nettle brand what are the odds by the way the guy's voice by Patrick Stewart I think I said that before uh you can just tell that old Patty here knocked out his recording and collected his paycheck in like one afternoon of recording he's like boom done goodbye I'll never see you again but I will give him this though nettle br's design is pretty great a metal dragon that's badass not very practical especially with no wings but pretty badass too bad his character pivots from being evil to wanting to hook up on tender and Skype I'm not joking he actually says Skype me to his little Pearl looking minion in the movie I've lived in your Celler for 500 years I I know nothing of the world Beyond how will I communicate with you Skype me nle brand has another sidekick by the way this freaking annoying dwarf character whose main motive is dick riding moving on our Trio of Heroes run into a sandstorm from Dune fear is the mind killer and crash into a tomb in Egypt they fight big bird and then run into a British Professor I guess he was robbing the tomb then they take off on a montage looking for a genie who can tell them where the rim job of Heaven is meanwhile nettle bran uses his submarine to track down fire Drake because he wants to kill the last dragon even though fire Drake is not the last dragon you still want to hide bottleneck Genie time Genie it's the genie from the movie the trio find out where the rim of Heaven is located but they get jumped by Netty here who fights the genie they escape they fly to India they talk to this old Indian couple who are like Ben you're the the the Dragon Rider it's it's on our little descriptions here the little inscriptions on the wall what is that you say well Ben is like oh no I just want money and is obviously having a predictable change of heart after hanging out with sorrow and fire Drake as far as character chemistry goes it's it's pretty basic sorl does not like Ben because he's a human and fire Drake here believes he can only shoot fire when Ben rides him by the way it's pretty cruel he's named fire Drake and couldn't breathe fire for the longest time you know it's like someone calling me Olympic triathlon guy and I'm like I can't do the Olympic triathlon I'm just a guy thank God that's not my name all in all kind of lame and poorly told now it's obviously building up to that liar revealed cliche like with Ben saying I'm just in it for the money but I love you guys now that old cliche now they're in the Himalayas come on keep up and at the Temple of the Dragon Heavenly rims and dimsums nettle bran attacks them and fire Drake decides that no no more running it's time to fight the prophecy he kills Netty with his fire and then finds the portal to the Pacific Rim but not before we get some weird inflation fetish stuff I said it it's true look also shout out to the scene with the little guy who like defects over to the heroes he looks like Pearl you know and he's photoshopping nle brand his his little iPad he's like how do I stop him and distract them there I photoshopped a girl version of n brand he wants to get his metal hard it worked what is this movie oh yeah the dragons at home by the way this entire time are about to wage war against humanity I completely forgot about that plot point it's just that forgettable but fire Drake who's now a Chad now comes home takes the dragons to the rim drops off Ben to hang up with the British professor's family and that's the movie so the plot is a quest which is fairly predictable and adequate it actually doesn't differ Too Much from the book book synopsis though a lot from the book was omitted however the character motives and chemistry are just boring I don't care about these Heroes the dragon is lame soral is dismissed and underutilized and the Human boy is a jerk who is unlikable none of them really click the only part I really liked was with the villain being unapologetically evil you know except for him goofing off on his iPad why does he have an iPad also his little minions were annoying I love I love how it says that the little guy is supposed to be like a homunkulus in the wiki entry sure sure that's what I think of when I see the word homunculus Pearl from Steven Universe I've comeing here to a homunculus overall Dragon Rider is a frustrating disappointment because there's genuine Talent here especially in the visual department now it's not God TI by any means but I've seen worse the textures the movement the backgrounds the colors the facial expressions yeah there's skill involved here but it's the writing that weighs this movie down I just do not care about these characters at all they're insufferable onedimensional and I don't care about their plights or motives yes this is a kids movie and I'm sure some of yall right now are probably thinking why is a grown ass man caring so much about the quality of a children's movie but compare this to How to Train Your Dragon in that movie I'm very invested in these Stakes for both the humans and the dragons this giggy boy who lives in a viking Society where dragons are the unquestionable enemy and then he befriends a dragon and finds out that the dragons aren't all that bad and are actually incredibly helpful yeah a simple story that's very effective and wonderfully told now compare that to Dragon Rider where it's about a dragon trying to save his Dragon Village by finding a new home somewhere with no real Direction where is this home where did you go how did you find out there's no sense of World building as far as that goes and the dragon is some Messiah who defeats a dragon hunting monster with the help of a dragon rider who is just some punk kid with a mysterious backstory that isn't really explained the only character I really cared about is sorl and nle brand sorl here jumps into action she actually gives a damn why couldn't she be the Dragon Rider I feel like she was more deserving than this twerp of a human character come on movie make the fairy girl the main character you cowards honest to God this movie just needed a better screenplay that's it just a better screenplay I know enough about the story from the actual book and it sounds like the screenplay tried to stay somewhat loyal to it but they failed to make me care or feel invested in these characters fire Dr was dull Ben was annoying and sorl felt wasted and nettle brand just wanted to clap some iron cheeks on Tinder it is a damn shame that this movie could not be more than a self-aware ripoff of How to Train Your Dragon it's like haha it's self-aware of its competitor predecessor haha but it couldn't be more than that Dragon Rider is eclipsed by How to Train Your Dragon in virtually every category which begs the question why waste your time watching this movie when you can watch a better movie instead honestly the most unique element to this movie is the design of the villain and that there's an anthro girl sidekick who is somewhat kind of interesting that's it so to the animators and artists who worked on this movie hey well done seriously I hope you find better scripts and adaptations to work on it just goes to show how the Beating Heart of a good movie is unsurprisingly the writing quality visuals can only do so much but when attached to a stinker of a story nothing can really Salvage it not even dear Fox girls oh sorl you tried your best we'll see you on e621 a [Music]
