hello everyone and welcome to maple leaf ESL my name is Andrew and thank you for joining me here today for today's lesson I want to take a look at phrasal verbs that use the word knock so I have chosen seven phrasal verbs and I'm going to take a look at some definitions and some examples okay so let's see if we can take a look so the first one here says knock back and the definition is to drink something quickly usually alcohol okay this is kind of a fun expression is pretty simple usually we use it to say let's knock back some drinks okay and it would usually be like a shot glass like a shot glass of whiskey like let's knock back some whiskey or let's knock back some tequila okay you could use this if you were talking about say water or juice or coca-cola but it's not so common if you used it for coca-cola you would be using it in sort of a joking way right because it's normally used to talk about alcohol so again let's knock back some drinks okay next one there it says knock down and we have two definitions for this one so the first one says to reduce or lower the price of okay so if a store has knocked down its prices it means they have reduced their prices or lower their prices so if we think about like a Christmas sale or a you know summer back-to-school sale something like that usually stores knock down their prices okay so that's one definition the second definition says to cause to fall down often by force okay so if somebody is hit by a car when they're walking across the street we could say he was knocked down by a car okay also if we think about something like some bad weather like a storm we could say the storm knocked down the building or the storm knocked down some trees okay so we could use it in that kind of way right okay next one there says knock out again we have two definitions for this one so the first one says to make someone unconscious or asleep okay so the most common way to use this is when talking about boxing or fighting okay you could say the boxer knocked out his opponent so that means he punched him in the face and the guy fell down and he's unconscious right remember unconscious means not awake or sort of like asleep so we use that for boxing or any kind of fighting right if somebody gets punched in the face and they are knocked out right so they're they're kind of asleep okay also you could use it say when talking about like turkey or alcohol right a lot of people you know on Thanksgiving or Christmas they'll have a big turkey and then a couple hours later they feel very sleepy so I can say all that turkey knocked me out or I drank too much alcohol and it knocked me out or again it could just be something like I took a sleeping pill or I took some you know cold medicine and it knocked me out right it made me go to sleep okay second definition it says to damage or destroy ok so again think about if there's bad weather like a storm we could say the storm has knocked out the power so that means none of the lights are working the electricity is not working right the storm knocked out the power so that would be the second way to use knock out okay let's look at the next one it says your knock over and the definition to make something fall usually by accident okay so imagine I'm walking and then oops I knock over the lamp or I nah over a cup of coffee so this means the coffee falls on the ground or the lamp falls on the ground okay and as it says there it's usually by accident so I didn't try to do this maybe I just was not paying attention so we could use this easily with children right the child knocked over the glass of water so clearly it was an accident the child did not try to knock over the glass it just happened by accident okay all right next one there says knock off we've got two definitions for this one okay the first one says to stop an activity especially work okay this is somewhat of a slang expression if I say let's knock off at five o'clock that means let's go home at five o'clock like from the office or from your job right or I could ask my friend what time are you knocking off today that means what time will you finish work today so again kind of a slang expression but it's fairly common okay second definition to robbed somewhere okay again this is another slang expression we would say the criminals knocked off a bank or the criminals knocked off a liquor store so this means they robbed a bank or they robbed a liquor store so again really common expression but it is slang okay we got two more to go next one says knock it off okay you'll notice this is another knock off expression but I wanted to make it separate because we normally use this with it in the middle or with another noun in the middle so the definition says to stop or quit something usually as a command or a request so if I say knock it off that means stop doing that okay I would usually say this if I was annoyed or angry right think about a parent would say this to her child knock it off that means quit it stop it right if I was in a coffee shop and somebody was making a bunch of noise they had their pen there knocking it against the table like this I want to say knock it off right stop it that's annoying me however one thing to remember with knock it off it's kind of a rude expression so my example in the coffee shop I probably shouldn't say that because it's a little rude I should say could you please stop that that would be more polite but if it's with my friends or again if it's a parent talking to a child it would be very common to say knock it off right stop that okay all right last one also a slang expression it says there knock up and the definition is to become pregnant okay so if if I say about a woman she was knocked up or she got knocked up it means she got pregnant but it sounds like this was not planned right she did not want to get pregnant it happened by accident so if you have some friends and they're trying to make a baby and then they become pregnant you would probably not say she's knocked up you would just say she's pregnant okay but if somebody got pregnant sort of you know by accident this person was not planning to get pregnant then you would say she got knocked up okay or she was knocked up okay I want to erase the whiteboard and I want to see if we can write some examples using each of these phrasal verbs with nah all right so let's see if we can take a look at some of these examples so the first one here says let's knock back a few drinks okay so as I said this expression is really only used for alcohol and when you drink quickly right so knock back a few drinks okay next one every year stores knock down their prices at Christmas so again stores reduce their prices at Christmas okay next one the city will knock down some old buildings okay so again in this case it means the city will take down or tear down or destroy some old buildings right so they will do this on purpose okay next one on Thanksgiving too much turkey always knocks me out right so too much turkey always makes me fall asleep right makes me sleepy okay next one the storm knocked out the power so again that's kind of it's the same example I used earlier so the storm just damages the power right okay next one the child accidentally knocked over the wineglass so again the key there is that it was accidentally right knocked over most government workers knock off at 5:00 p.m. so again most government workers go home or stop working at 5:00 p.m. okay couple more here the two robbers have knocked off three banks this week so again the two robbers have robbed or stolen from three banks this week okay two more here this is a speech bubble knock it off I'm trying to get some work done right so knock it off you know stop doing that you're being too noisy is probably the reason right okay and last one again a speech here did you hear someone knocked up the boss's daughter oh I wouldn't want to be that guy who got the boss's daughter pregnant okay so that is the end of today's lesson I hope that these examples were clear please join me again in the classroom next time thank you so much for joining me today you
