hello everyone and welcome to make-belief ESL my name is andrew and thank you for joining me here in the classroom today for today's lesson i want to take a look at phrasal verbs that use the word drag so for this lesson i've chosen six different phrasal verbs and as always we're gonna look at definitions and of course many examples okay let's see if we can start with the first one it says here to drag someone down we've got two definitions for this one the first one says to lower the quality or amount of something okay think about this example imagine I play on a sports team okay everybody on this team is really really good but I am not so good right my skills are pretty low so when I'm playing with this team I drag the rest of the team down right this means the quality of the team is lower when I'm playing or the success right the chances of winning are less when I'm playing because again I'm not such a good player but all the other players are really good so I drag the rest of the team down or I drag the team down ok one more example imagine I'm a really good student ok I'm responsible student and I get good grades ok but then I start hanging with a new group of people ok and these people do not get get good grades ok and they don't care about school ok so after a few months my grades start to get lower ok so this new group of irresponsible friends have dragged me down with them ok so that means they've caused me to sort of get lower grades right so in a sense the quality of my grades or the quality of me has gone because I've started hanging around with these sort of bad guys right so they have dragged me down okay and the second meeting says to make someone unhappy ok imagine my friend he's really happy he's in a good mood and then I start telling him a sad story right maybe my dog died ok so now he's really sad he was happy but now he's sad so my story has dragged him down right it's made him feel sad it's made him feel unhappy so anytime you make someone feel unhappy you can say sorry for dragging you down right so sorry for making you feel sad or for making you feel unhappy ok the next one says drag on and the definition is to last unnecessarily long or to go slowly ok imagine somebody is making a speech ok and the speech it starts to become a really long speech ok and you think it's boring and you're thinking gosh when is this person gonna finish their speech so you might say this person's speech was dragging on right so that means it was lasting too long and usually it means that you think it's boring right his speech was dragging on right his speech was too long and it was boring ok think of a second example you're watching a movie and you think gosh you check in your watch when is this movie going to end so you can say I didn't really like this movie it dragged on for too long right so again it lasted too long it went too slowly ok and notice in that situation that it's kind of your opinion right you think it is lasting too long someone else they might watch the same movie and they might think it's really exciting they don't think that it's dragging on too long right they think that it's great so again using this one can kind of just be your opinion I think the movie was dragging on too long ok next one to drag someone into something and the meaning there is to involve someone in a difficult or unpleasant situation okay imagine I'm in a bad situation maybe I'm in trouble with the police I stole something so I go to my friend's house and I say you have to hide me from the police right they're looking for me okay now I've sort of forced my friend right I forced him to be involved in this sort of difficult situation so I've dragged my friend into this situation with me right I've involved him in this difficult situation he probably doesn't want to be involved but he doesn't have a choice so I dragged him into it same thing imagine two parents are getting divorced and they have children right okay now they're making the children choose do you want to go live with your mom or do you want to go live with your dad and the child doesn't want to make this choice but the parents have dragged the child into this situation right they've involved the child in this unpleasant situation and they have not given the child a choice so they've dragged the child into it okay all right next one says to drag something out and the definition is to last unnecessarily long okay you'll notice that's the same definition as to drag on okay but there's one key difference okay before I said his speech is dragging on okay but we cannot say his speech is dragging out you'll notice we need an object so I might say he is dragging his speech out right this means that again it means the same thing he's making the speech too long but if we're gonna use drag out we have to use the object whereas here we only need the subject right so I might say the movie dragged out right the movie in this case is the object right I could say drag something out or drag out something doesn't have to be in the middle but we have to use the object right for example imagine I'm in a relationship and the relationship is not good but we're still unnecessarily continued continuing the relationship for too long so we can say we dragged our relationship out for too long okay all right next one says to drag something out of someone and the definition is to force someone to tell you something and I wrote there against their will okay imagine the police they have caught a bad guy and they want the bad guy to tell them all the details about the crime and about the other people involved in the crime but this person doesn't want to talk so the police they have to drag the truth out of this guy right they kind of have to force it out of him they might tell him oh you're gonna be in jail for a long long time if you don't tell us the truth so maybe slowly he starts to tell them the truth right so they drag the truth out of this person right okay last one here it says to drag something up this is a very common expression it says to mention an unpleasant story and again here it's usually a story that someone doesn't want to remember okay imagine I have a painful story from my past right maybe I was in a relationship and I broke up with this woman and it was a very bad nasty breakup is not a good memory but then my friend he starts talking about this memory all remember how painful that breakup was gosh that was a terrible breakup so I might say hey stop dragging up these painful memories right stop mentioning them it's an unpleasant story I don't want to remember this so stop dragging it up right so anytime somebody they mention a story an old story that you don't want a remember you don't want to talk about this you can say stop dragging that up or stop dragging up that old story right I don't want to talk about that so again that's a really common expression okay let's see if we can erase the whiteboard and I want to take a look at some written examples using each of these phrasal verbs all right then so let's take a look at these examples so the first one here says we need to replace Julian he's dragging the whole team down right so in this case maybe Julian he's the weakest member of the team right so as a result the quality of our work is not so good because he's dragging us down right okay next one sorry for dragging you down with my bad news right so sorry for making you feel sad or making you feel unhappy because of my bad news this presentation is really dragging on huh right so this presentation is unnecessarily long don't you think okay next one I never should have dragged you into this sorry for involving you in my problems right so I never should have involved you in my problems right okay next one why do you always drag out all your decisions hurry up and decide already right so why do you always take an unnecessarily long time making your decisions okay next one did you tell Jenny about her surprise party not exactly she sort of dragged it out of me right so again this means she sort of forced me to tell her about the party I didn't want to tell her but she forced me to tell her about her surprise party right so I didn't want to ruin the surprise but she sort of forced me to okay last one she loves to drag up all the mistakes I've made even though she knows I don't like it right so she loves to mention all of my mistakes from the past even though she knows I don't like it okay alright that is the end of today's lesson thank you so much for joining me here at maple leaf ESL and I look forward to seeing you again next time
