hey everybody I'm Rick biato so I open up my phone today and I'm kind of scrolling through and I come to this thing that says how big is Taylor Swift it's from The New York Times but then I look a little closer and it says is she bigger than the Beatles that was the clickbait that got me to go to the article so this article talks about the Beatles hits and their chart performance and Compares it to Taylor there's a lot of other details and variables that I'll cover here pop music isn't made the same way it was 60 years ago it's not listened to the same way now we have streaming people bought albums back then and it uses things like number one hits to compare what the Beatles did 60 years ago with what Taylor Swift has done since the mid 2000s now I have a little bit of history with Taylor Swift actually I don't know Taylor Swift at all but I produced a band called need to breathe as a matter of fact I produced three records of theirs one called the heat in 2007 another one called The Outsiders in 2009 and one called the Reckoning in 2011 and in 2011 Taylor Swift asked need to breathe to open for her 82 dates and I went to a bunch of the concerts I went backstage I got within 5T of Taylor I didn't meet her or anything I'm not going to say I met Taylor Swift back then but I went to a number of the dates and I saw kind of how the whole machine ran okay let's take a look at this chart here where it talks about the number one songs that they had so it took the Beatles six years from 1964 to 1970 to get 20 number one hits whereas Taylor Swift took 12 years to get 12 number one hits furthermore The Beatles between 1964 and 65 had 11 number one hits including in 1964 I Want to Hold Your Hand she loves you can't find me love love me do hard days night I feel fine and then in 65 eight days a week Ticket to Ride help yesterday and we can work it out that's almost the whole number that Taylor had now some of you might be saying wait a minute Taylor Swift had number one songs before then well she had number one country songs but as you can see anyone can have a number one country song including me I had one in 2013 so they're obviously not that hard to get before we go on let me finish the Beatles number one songs that I haven't mentioned number 12 and 66 Paperback Writer Penny Lane All You Need Is Love Hello Goodbye Hey Jude get back come together something let it be in the long and Winding Road in 1970 out of the Beatles number one songs there's only three people that wrote them John lennin Paul m Carney and George Harrison by contrast Taylor Swift's 12 number one songs have 12 different writers they are Taylor Swift Max Martin shelc Jack Antonoff Aaron desar Liz Rose Fred fairbrass Richard fairbrass wait a second the fairbrass brothers That's Right Said Fred they're actually listed as songwriters because the Taylor song borrowed from it Rob manzoli St Vincent post Malone Kendrick Lamar having so many collaborators allows Taylor to tour endlessly cuz these people are feeding her song ideas all along let me give you an example of what I'm talking about you know this song We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together it's written by Taylor and Max Martin and Shel if you remove the vocals from this and just listen to the [Music] track that's just a guitar Loop playing one she's playing one phrase there and they're just looping it Protools we call this a bed track or just an instrumental that you write lyrics over that's not to diminish anything about the writing it's an incredibly well-written song but Taylor Swift is getting stuff like this all the time from the best songwriters take another one of her number one songs that's written by her and Aaron desar cardigan right this song C are young assume if I just play the instrumental track you get something like [Music] this these are cracks that she writes the melody and lyrics over I want to explain a little bit more on how these producer driven songs are written the reason I soloed the instrumental bed is because the producers in the first case Max Martin and shellbach and we are never ever getting back together that's all them they did all that stuff yeah Taylor may have played the guitar Rift one or two times and they cut it up but they're doing the drum programming the keyboard Parts the guitar Parts all the swells everything you hear is them the Aaron desar track is all him he's playing the guitars the keyboards the drums everything the jack antina thing if you look at the song fortnite if you look at the credits it says Taylor Smith vocals songwriting producer post Malone vocals songwriter but Jack antinoff producer songwriter drum synthesizer percussion electric guitar acoustic guitar programming that's how these songs are made and it's important to acknowledge the producers Taylor Swift ain't pressing buttons and programming drums and doing anything like that this is not unique to Taylor Swift this is pretty much how all pop music is made with a bed track and then you have the top line which is the melody now I don't have any knowledge of Taylor Swift working with Max Martin but I've met Max Martin before now Taylor probably writes the melody or some of the melody and the lyrics but when I listen to We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together and I hear that chorus Melody I hear a Max Martin melody or a shellback Max Martin Melody that's how they write Melodies I've listened to so many of their songs and analyzed them these guys are Pros Max Martin is an amazing Melody writer and these guys are behind the scenes like that and they don't really get the credit but this is how pop music is put together for the most part now as well written as these Taylor Swift songs are you can't compare them to songs like Lady Madonna which has a piano birth that's so complicated to play or a song like I'm the warus it starts out in [Music] B it was down to D and the verse goes to a the chord structures The Beatles didn't repeat ideas their songs are so varied it's amazing nobody says you know this Beetles song sounds like another Beatles song and they came up with all those ideas themselves it's no bed track with people emailing them stuff they sat together and they jammed they played live in the studio they did the Rhythm Section and in many cases they sang the live vocal takes look at this long and winding road that LE to your da [Music] will'll never [Music] disappear or this video of them playing get back on the roof get get back get back that get back is basically the one that's on the record now I don't want to diminish what Taylor does but these are completely different universes The Beatles not only innovated melodically lyrically harmonically meaning the chords changes and things like that they created much of the vocabulary of music that came after it Taylor's Innovations are in Commerce or Reinventing herself she's actually kind of a content creator think about it she had number one songs as a country artist and then thought okay I want to be a pop artist and who does she go to first she goes to Max Martin because Max Martin is the hitmaker and then when she wants to change her music again she goes to Jack Antonoff who's an indie rock guy and he writes these kind of indie rock songs and she changes her music that way and then she goes to Aaron desar from the national who's also an indie rock guy and they all have their own unique way that they create these bed tracks but that's what they do for her and she's Innovative in that way but she's changing her content for the algorithm of pop music you want to hear something funny is I actually made a video last year speaking of content creator I made a video who's bigger Taylor Swift or Mr Beast and that's when I realized Taylor Swift is just like Mr Beast the biggest the most of everything and I didn't put it out okay to answer the question set out the beginning of the video is Taylor Swift bigger than the Beatles culturally no commercially no but she's closer if you think I'm way off with this leave it in the comments say Rick you're an idiot you're not even like what are you talking about hit subscribe leave a comment thanks for watching
