Georgia Perot well thank you as a pleasure to be here with you this afternoon hopefully you're not melting too much out there in the Sun my daughter texted me and said mom the power went out at home and I'm like oh that's not good but he came back on so that was again that was the best part we need that air conditioning today so for the next hour you could just sit in the AC and listen to me talk about Noah's Ark and the flood now probably most of you or I hope all of you are planning to go to Ark Encounter while you're here how many have already been there okay so how many are still going that should be the rest of you okay good so but for those of you that haven't been there I'm going to show you just a sneak peek [Music] so hopefully that helps you a little bit more forward to visiting there and while you're there make sure you check out all the amazing food choices - I actually went the other day just to explore the food as I've been in New York a lot so it was neat to see all the different things that really really make a full day or more I'm really of being there and enjoying all of that but as with any attraction that is based on the truth of God's Word you've probably read or heard that we have received a lot of criticism for Ark Encounter this is just a few of the headlines from the first year we were in operation Ken hams crazy Ark park Ken is the CEO of Answers in Genesis which built the Creation Museum and the Ark Encounter five things Kentucky can spend 73 million dollars on instead of a fake Noah's Ark now here's the ironic thing about that Kentucky didn't spend a dime KD Ark was completely privately funded and Bill Nye the Science Guy visit a Noah's Ark he doesn't believe should exist in many many more and so that's just like I say just a small sample because too many unbelievers spending a hundred million dollars to build an ark that's based on a story and the Bible doesn't really make any sense because they don't believe that the Bible is true so therefore the Ark isn't a real thing that ever existed but what's really sad to me as a Christian is how many Christians also think that Genesis is a myth and that the flood and the ark aren't real accounts of something that happened a couple of years ago we published a book called ready to return and in it we presented our findings from a study that we did of 20-somethings that have basically grown up in the church and they still continue to attend church now we ask them a lot of things and I don't have time to go into all of those but I want to just point out a few things that I think are especially relevant to what we're going to discuss today we asked him does the Bible contain errors and nearly forty percent said no or they don't know no so for them the Bible is not the inerrant infallible Word of God there are problems with it there are mistakes in it things that are wrong now we asked him if you believe it has errors what are those errors now this is not a multiple-choice question they can answer however they want and then we categorized those answers and over 50% of their answers had something to do with the book of Genesis that it was wrong about the age of the earth that it's Genesis been disproved or that it never flooded during Noah's time and when we asked him a question about the ark itself okay but it actually though or only a legend 49 percent almost half said only a legend okay so it's not a true account and given to us in Scripture so it's a it's a myth now why is that I mean certainly as kids growing up in the church they learned that the ark was real right I mean I can go to my local Christian bookstore and find books like these lining the shelves as Noah is the flood really about Noah's floating zoo and a year-long leisure cruise right is it just a story in the Bible or is it something more and does that really matter so what we want to do during our time today kind of take a walk through biblical history as highlighted in the seven seas of history that you'll see as you go throughout the museum today and we want to discover their true history and reality of Noah's Ark and the hope you understand that it's not a story it's not a legend it's not a myth it's real it really happened its history and why that history is so important to Christianity and to God's work so let's start off with how do we get to the flood in the first place okay why was this necessary and to do that we're going to start with creation and we know if the language is used in Genesis 1 it's clear that God created in 6 24-hour days and he created obviously different things on different days and then rested on the seventh day now we also know from Scripture especially from the biblical genealogies or the family trees that are given there and other events in scripture we can figure out the age of the earth so we know from Adam to Abraham was about 2,000 years from Abraham to Christ was another 2,000 years and from Christ to today is the last 2,000 years so that gives us a grand total of 6,000 years not millions of billions of years now we know that God's creation was very good nothing like the world that we live in today right it's no disease no death no suffering a very very different place but it didn't stay that for very long which brings us to the second C which is corruption and we know the Adam and Eve had one thing they were told not to do right and that was to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil but that is exactly what they did they disobeyed God and the punishment for their sin was death okay and all creation groans right as a result of that that's when death and disease and suffering entered this world as a punishment for man's sin now that brings us to the third C which were obviously going to spend some time talking about which is catastrophe so this is about 1500 years after creation and I think in one simple verse the Bible sums up for us their very tragic and horrible effects of Adam's sin it says in the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually okay so it was a bad place I think things today are pretty bad they were actually worse and no it's time because only Noah was found righteous and only he and his family and the animals on the ark were spared from a global catastrophic flood that would destroy everything oh now in my experience there are three big I guess areas that people have questions about when it comes to the flood and the reality of the ark and the flood and there's three big areas or the three big issues on the ark the animals and the flood itself now obviously in one hour I can't cover every question or objection that people might have but I'm gonna focus on those that I think are the major so to speak thing and then we have an ark okay we have lots of resources that you can go to to find out more information if you have specific questions all right so first of all how big was the Ark now many of us have become accustomed to looking at images of the ark like this we called these bathtub arks because they're kind of shaped like a bathtub okay we're fairytale arks because they're not representative at all of the real thing I always say the only thing realistic about this picture is this elephant right here okay because that woman knows what's gonna happen right on that cute little arc he's on cuz when that wave hits what's gonna happen the ark is gonna capsize right everybody's gonna fall everybody's dead that doesn't work and yet this is what we see all the time right this is what we children play with toys of the ark like this that's in their books as I've already shown you and I'm thinking what does this say to our children about the Ark and the flood because it's not like we don't know okay we do know because we have dimensions given to us in Scripture so I wouldn't have a problem if you give him a scale model of the Ark to play with okay something that actually looked it was actually you know scaled down from the real thing but this isn't it this is not what it would look like at all because we know that its length was 300 cubits its width was 50 cubits and its height was 30 cubits okay now then the next question is what is a cubit because we don't use that term of measurement anymore and in cubit is considered the length I'm an adult man elbow to the tip of his middle finger now depending on the guy that side that's obviously going to vary and we don't know exactly what size of cubit Noah used but we do know that in a lot of ancient big construction projects so to speak they typically use the long cubit which is twenty point four inches sometimes it has a lot of different names the Royal Cubert cubit a Hebrew long cubit and so that is the cubit size we used to build Noah's Ark so they are at the Ark Encounter so when you use that cubit length we do a little bit of math here that means the length is 510 feet its width with 85 feet and its height was 51 feet okay that is very different from those fairy tale Ark so those bathtub arcs that we just saw now we you don't even have to imagine how big it is because you can go and see the real thing and it's I when people asked me to describe it I usually just say massive because it is the largest freestanding timber frame structure in the world ain't nothing is bigger than this and I'm always amazed I gave him when I was like the Ark the other day I had some people tell me well it was really busy there were a lot of people there I didn't actually go on to the are I'm sure there was they can all be on the ark thousands of people right and if you're outside you don't even see that it's amazing they could just I say they're kind of just like absorbed into the ark it's big enough for all those people it's length is about a football field and a half long its width is about two school buses wide and its height it's about three giraffes stacked okay so if you can imagine that it's really really tall do you want to get an idea to stand at the end of the arc and look up okay it's huge it's about at the bow fin which is right here it's about ten stories up so it is really really tall in fact it's volume is equivalent to about 483 semi trailers so you can but a lot of stuff in that arc now another way to get of a sense of its size sort of is to compare it to boats that have been built in more modern times like the Wyoming which is about 450 feet long it was a wooden ship as well that's not quite as long as the Ark but pretty close now it's not built it's not as big as things like the Titanic or the Queen Mary - but your steel boats well why is that because this isn't a leisure ship right no it didn't need golf courses and shuffleboard and pools I mean not saying that wouldn't have been nice but that wasn't the point right it was a survival cruise that's what I always say it wasn't about leisure it was about surviving and it needed to be a cargo ship because it had to carry animals and their provisions and the water and all of those things so they had a very different intention than the Titanic or the Queen Mary - now research has been conducted on the dimensions of the ark to see how they were actually perfect for a cargo ship because you have to take into account several factors like comfort stability and strength and the ark really Falls dead center in the middle of that triangle it's the best of all three worlds basically combined that you can get when you have to take all into account because if it were taller or longer or wider it would break apart it would tip over or the people and animals would be so sick they wouldn't be able to survive and and now I say well of course it's perfect because God's the one that gave the dimensions for it and he knew exactly what needed to be done there was even a group of Korean scientists back in the early 90s that wanted to do some modeling of the ark to see if it would indeed be seaworthy so they built a scale model and they're not Christians to my knowledge but they a scale model they put it out on the open ocean and they said what it works but it was their conclusion absolutely okay that was the conclusion they drew they wrote a research paper on that and said it's absolutely seaworthy if it had been built it could do the job well again of course it could God designed it now knowing the size of the Ark is really important and and one of the things that we do to illustrate this at the Ark Encounter is our exhibit called fairy tale Ark and in it we show a lot of those books and toys that I've already shown you and how we present the ark to children as cute and whimsical and very tail light and people would say yeah but come on they're just kids might yep they're just kids which is why it matters even more how we portray these things to them I mean if we believe these are history if we believe this is history why are we presenting it like a fairy tale why are we presenting it like fiction right that's a problem we need to think about that because our kids are coming to us for truth and if we're portraying what is truth as a lie or as a fairy tale or as fiction that's a problem we're not doing them any that's not doing justice to what's in the Bible and it's certainly harming and hurting them by leading them astray and that's exactly what Satan hopes we'll do right because he says if I can convince you that the flood was not real then I can convince you that heaven and hell are not real I can convince you that the rest of the Bible isn't true either because after all if it begins with him it what about the rest of it I mean birds don't give birth and dead people don't come back to life right I mean that's what science says well if science says the first part of the Bible didn't happen why I believe when any of the rest of it says see that's that's the problem that we get into right it really it really hampers the is the Bible really truthful when authoritative and all that it says I mean like I said with those young people they doubted it I mean they think it has mistakes and it has errors in it especially when it comes to Genesis and it leads them to a lot of other disbeliefs and then and the Bible as well so we need to give them the truth because this is what Satan has been doing from the very beginning right he is the father of lies what did he try to do he tried to get Eve to question God's Word did God really say you couldn't do that right I mean that's what he that's what he always does and it was subtle okay but he got her to believe it and this the following world as a result of that so that's why it's so important that we portray the arc accurately and not give in to the devil's lies of what he's trying to do and accomplish in this world all right let's not add to that right let's show them truth okay so how to Noah then fit all the animals on New York now honestly I don't think this would be as much of a question and people would portray the ark accurately okay I think we get into problems when we show fairytale arcs and then try to imagine all those animals but like I said it's a very big structure and it's volume is equivalent to almost 500 semi trailers but okay that being said there's a lot of animals in the world today modern estimates as far as how many species are in the world it's somewhere between two and fifty million and it could be more than that okay but we don't really know the number that I've sort of seen they think is the most reasonable estimate is about eight million okay that's sort of the settled upon number right now now here's the thing if Noah had to take two of a million species on the ark that 16 million animals so I found the worst picture I could possibly find right Noah's Ark so even with a biblically sized dark you can't fit 16 million animals on there and they're provisions it's not going to work but this is a question that we get a lot Bill Nye the Science Guy when he debated Ken Ham on this very stage was one of the questions yeah you've got millions of species in the world how could they all possibly fit on the ark well let's answer that and I have three sort of speak a 3-fold answer to that question so the first part of that answer is first of all remember he only had to take land-dwelling air-breathing creatures okay he didn't have to take any marine creatures because they've got plenty of water and fish are actually quite specie oast there's a lot of species of fish in the world so those numbers that eight million goes down significantly without marine creatures probably also doesn't include the insects okay now I'm sure with all those animals on the ark they had bugs okay but the thing is is that insects are technically not air-breathing so probably what didn't include the insects now even if he did have to take them they're not gonna take up that much space right okay probably fit them in a small box so it's going to be okay even if he did have to take them but again if you go to our insect aureum here in the museum and use that's just a small tiny fraction right the different species of insects that exist out there beetles alone are like hundreds of thousands of species so if you take that number insects and marine creatures out of 8 million that numbers gonna dramatically go down and again the reason I say there's just air breathing land rolling creatures is because that's what scripture says it says the birds the animals and the creeping things okay will come to you to keep them alive that's it okay nothing else now next part of that answer number two is that they had he probably brought young adults and I might say he brought God brought the animals to him and then he took them actually on the art the reason for younger animals would be because they take up less space they eat less and they produce less waste so all of those things are good when you're talking a survival crews with a lot of animal cargo the other reason is because they would have the longest reproductive life after the flood and that's what you want right your to multiply them fill the earth well you don't want to take really old animals that aren't gonna reproduce much you want to take really young one and again we know that reproduction was in mind here because of what God says a male and a female to keep them alive on the face of all the earth okay so that's what he was to do now the last part of this question which i think is the more this answer which i think is the most important to understand is that know how to take two of each kind not two of each species okay and that word kind is repeated over and over and over again here as well as any in the Genesis account of creation we see that word now what is it kind just like we said what is a cubit well when you think about our modern taxonomy and the way that we classify things coin is usually it we usually would say that's about the same family so hopefully you all remember this from biology class right kingdom phylum class order family genus species is how we classify organisms so we would say that coin falls at that family level not genus and not species okay not down here not 8 million but up here which is significantly less at the family level so just to give you an example of that all dogs belong to the family kanaday it doesn't matter whether you're talking foxes or wolves or coyotes or a chihuahua they all belong to Canada same with cats ok whether you're talking a lion a panther a tiger or kitty cat like you might have at home those are all from the family Felidae and the reason we say it's at the family level is because most members of a family of the same family can breed with one another and produce offspring ok it's sort of a reproductive unit the other thing is members of the same family all kind of look alike ok just like maybe your family with your biological children and your grandparents and great-grandparents there's similarities there right so you can kind of see that oh yeah those all belong to the same family so there's a strong just presence of looking at them and saying that as well as the fact that they can reproduce with one another and we have some really good examples actually of this as what forms of that family or that kind over at our petting zoo so you need to go over there today and you need to see our source and our donkey okay now when you look at him you're like wait a minute what is that kind of looks like a combination which is basically what it did these are what we call hybrids right so the brown one is resourced and his parents are the parents there are a zebra and a horse and then the song key of course is a zebra and a donkey now how is that possible because zebras horses and donkeys all belong to the family equity okay and they can mate with one another and produce offspring most of us are probably familiar with mules okay which is a donkey and a horse nice same idea and they all kind of look alike okay even if you didn't know exactly what these were you know there's some kind of horse right something in that family basically so Noah you know right now today we about mmm close to 400 breeds of dogs breeds of domestic dogs but Noah did not have to take 400 pairs of dogs on the ark okay that's just ridiculous um most of those breeds didn't even exist when Noah was taking animals on the ark hey those are those have just come about in about the last 500 years most of these breeds and only been around for a short period of time again they're just variations within the dog family so no I only took two dogs on the ark and from those two dogs after they came off they are they multiplied and reproduced to eventually we got lots of dogs okay today and and they come in many different shapes and sizes but they're all dogs right we've got jackals and foxes and the bush dog and wolf and the chi oh and your favorite domestic dog breed now some people say whoa wait a minute you're saying there was just two dogs and we get all the dogs we have today I say yeah that's one on the same and I say but that's a lot of change in a very short period of time it's just a few thousand years ago I say well true but let's think about this for a minute okay there's only about 35 dogs species in the world okay you realize all these dogs and I'm showing you up here and the woof all belong to the same species they're all Canis lupus okay they're just different breeds of dogs and there's a lot of variety among the breeds right I mean you've got Great Danes well I'm not that tall but you've got Great Danes and you've got Chihuahuas right I mean they look pretty different don't they now how is that possible they descend it from the wolf okay through people selecting for certain traits okay and they keep breeding them back and breeding them back and breeding them back and getting dogs that eventually just keep producing dogs that look like chihuahuas or Bulldogs or whatever it may be that's good people selecting and making those choices people have been able to do that in 500 years we've gotten about 400 breeds of dogs whoa okay so what can happen in a few thousand years certainly you can get 35 species in a few thousand I mean that's a lot more time and that's through nature and other other mechanisms at work not people selecting but natural mechanisms that cause that to happen so it's very very reasonable if we can produce a few hundred breeds certainly nature can produce a few you know dozen breeds or species in a few thousand years so it's really not all that unbelievable God has created these animals with an amazing amount of genetic diversity and you should feel sorry for the Bulldog there too I might mention just write a paper recently that breed is probably going to die out in our lifetimes and won't be around anymore we have bred it to the point that the poor dog cannot breathe anymore it's too much you know it's gotten too short of us now and it can't even breathe so so anyways that's just what happens those breeds become so purebred that can be bad for them now back when we knew we were going to build Ark Encounter when we first knew this was going to become a reality myself as well as several other scientists had to get together and do some a lot of research and figure out what is a reasonable estimate of number of animals for the Ark and knowing that he took two of every kind and seven pairs of some okay so we had to look at what then of the all of the animals that are alive today and all of the animals we only know from the fossil record okay and take all of those and put them into their kinds their original kinds ooh that's a big job all right and so many scientists were involved and they published their papers and what's called answers research journal which is an online journal through the Answers in Genesis website anyone can go there and look at those articles but I'm going to give you a summary of those they are pretty fascinating to read but as far as mammals go there's about close to 550 kinds Birds almost 300 kinds reptiles a little over 300 kind and then amphibians about 250 kinds which gives us a grand total of almost 1,400 kinds or seven thousand animals okay so that's all that was needed on the ark again if you're taking at the family level or the kind level there's really not as many now do whatever you don't take this kind numbers and multiply by two you guys remember I know I had to take seven pairs of some the clean animals and the winged creatures so that's why you end up with a lot of birds on the ark now what animal though do you think I get asked most about when it comes to the ark unicorns I like that one yep that's one two that was probably a run a Souris though but but dinosaurs okay by far are the thing that people want to know about the most were dinosaurs on the ark and I say of course they were okay because what does the Bible say of every living thing of all flesh animals after their kind will come to you to keep them alive well that includes the dinosaurs you know we know about them from the fossil record they were row animals living animals at some point now there's lots of other animals that are also in the fossil record okay we get so excited about dinosaurs we tend to forget that there was a lot of mammalian species that we know are kinds that we no longer have around today we try to show some of those at the arcs that people understand it's not just dinosaurs in the fossil record it's lots of other animals that no longer exist either now there's plenty of room for them on the ark okay I think we get taken in by things like Jurassic Park and Jurassic world and we get this idea that all dinosaurs are like enormous okay and scary the fact is though the average size of a dinosaur is like Buffalo size okay so think large cow that's the average size of a dinosaur some of them are very big some of them are very small most of them are just right in the middle there so not a problem there's plenty of room on the ark for that no one would have taken juvenile or God would have brought to him juvenile dinosaurs okay again they're going to have the longest reproductive life after the flood so that just makes sense Noah was not trying to do this okay to say in that sauropods gonna have a hard time fitting through that door now once he got in he'd be okay he bit but still getting through might be an issue so no one's gonna take the young ones right the the everything starts out small including dinosaurs the largest dinosaur eggs are like the size of a football so it's not going to be a problem to fit them on the ark now the next question people ask is okay well what did t-rex eat because they're thinking he's gonna eat all the other animals on the ark and so I think there's two possibilities the one I tend to think of the most is that they were vegetarian that dinosaurs were vegetarian for at least a period of time there are meat eaters today suppose at meat eaters that refused meat there are tigers and lions that have done that they just won't eat it they will only eat fruits and veggies so it is possible and we're talking survival or not talking what they would preference or what they would normally eat so I think they could do that the other possibility is that he just took dried meat for the carnivorous dinosaur so they could still have that to some degree there's only about 60 to 80 dinosaur kinds or family so you're not talking that many dinosaurs it's actually a small minority of the animals on the ark less than 200 total so we do show a few those at the ark like the Stegosaurus kind and then the sauropod kind now again these guys are going to grow up to be some of the biggest land animals on the planet but they start out really small so we talked about the ark we talked about how all those animals could fit because it's not all that many animals after all and now we need to talk about the flood is there evidence of a global flood because if something covered if water covered the entire world at some point there should be evidence of that now one of the things that I hear a lot is that people that are trying Christians that are trying to kind of go along with what the world says but also believe what the Bible says will say well maybe the flood was just a local flood okay it didn't cover the entire world it just covered the area in which a Noah live so I want to address that first because I think that's an important issue to talk about it actually occurs a lot in the study notes of Bibles but we have to remember the study notes are not the inspired inerrant Word of God okay and so and really those ideas are coming as we'll see from outside the text and they're trying to push ideas into the Bible and the Bible clearly does not indicate or state so if the flood was local okay these are just some basic questions I have to ask why didn't know I have to build an ark because seriously he couldn't went somewhere else where the flood was not going to happen that seems like a lot of energy a lot of time and effort wasted when he could've just went to wherever the flood was not going to occur why did God send animals and birds to the ark cuz again he could have just sent them somewhere else I mean a year long like survival cruise was probably very stressful to the animals and hard oh it wasn't necessary if it was a local flood they could have just went elsewhere and been okay but my third reason for not for having a really hard time with the local flood and not believing a local flood is remember after the flood God sent a rainbow right he put a rainbow in the sky and said this is my promise I will never do this again right had there been lots of local floods since knowest I'm sure we all know that we experienced a lot in this region because of the Ohio River all right so if he said he'd never do it again and Noah's Flood was a local flood God has broken his promise many times over right I mean because there's been lots of local floods since then so that's a problem Noah's Flood can't be local because God didn't break his promises and he doesn't lie so we have to and we need to really think about that and understand that in that context and scripture makes it clear again just like we know the size of the Ark we know that the flood covered the entire world it says all flash on the earth everything all flesh everything shall on the earth shall die right even says all the high hills not some of them all of them were covered by 15 cubits of water that's about 23 25 feet above the highest hill so if it's a local flood how does that work think about that picture for a minute some of your chuckling you get it right so if it's a local flood what seriously it's just going to go 15 cubits upward of the closest of the highest toll in the area does water work that way I mean when you turn on in your bathtub do you think that bathtubs gonna stop it for the edge it's gonna stop it from going over no okay if the water keeps coming it's not going to it's going to continue to all those area it's gonna seek its own level so that isn't possible plus it says all the high hills under the whole heaven doesn't say just in the area where Noah lit and again Scripture is clear these verses are not hard to understand or interpret right it says when it means all flesh died every every Oh only Noah and those who are with him in the ark remained alive and if we had time we heard in the New Testament and I could show you passages there where Jesus himself stated these things okay so it's not again this isn't hard to understand and the New Testament writers including Jesus himself understood it to be a global flood that killed every everything land dwelling animal and human except those which for aboard the Ark now because it's Christians we have a reason to faith we do not have a blind one so in other words what we we know certain truths from God's Word so we expect to see certain things in the world and we see those things and those things confirm and support that God's Word is true all right so we should expect to see things like certain like we're gonna talk about in relationship to rock layers and the fossils okay and this is just - there's a lot more and we're only gonna talk about a subset even within that but let's talk about these it's being major applied evidences now probably many of us are familiar with geological time skills that look like this one that the lower you go in the rock layers the older that that rock is the older of the fossils are and as you go more towards the surface the younger they are and they're certain you know fossils associate of a different level now here's the question does it really take millions of millions of years for rock layers to form or can they actually form quickly under the right conditions okay that really is the question that we have to address so I'm gonna show you a short video that talks about the mountain st. Helens eruption that occurred in 1980 and most of us in the room maybe with the exception of the kids remember that watched it on TV probably because thank goodness volcanoes don't erupted every day in the US and what we saw was that wow under catastrophic conditions things like rock layers can actually form very very quickly so let's take [Music] on May 18 1980 mount st. helens located 95 miles south of Seattle Washington erupted the eruption was triggered by an earthquake centered beneath the mountain that measured five point one on the Richter scale the lateral blast swept out the north side of Mount st. Helens at 300 miles per hour with temperatures as high as 660 degrees Fahrenheit and the power of 24 megatons of thermal energy it snapped 100 year old trees like toothpicks and stripped them of their bark before the famous eruption at Mount st. Helens scientists were mostly familiar with slow acting examples of geologic change but at Mount st. Helens geologists watched the Earth's surface change quite rapidly icebergs were buried in hot avalanche material they melted and formed badlands in days eruptions on May 18 and June 10 produced fine layers in hours On June 10 mud flows cut zigzag canyons 100 feet deep in soft sand and mud complete with perpendicular side canyons canyons that are reminiscent of the geography of Grand Canyon only 40 times smaller and clearly produced within hours [Music] mudflows over the following decade cut hundreds of feet into solid rock in just days of cutting time fallen trees formed a log mat on the surface of Spirit Lake and dropped bark to the bottom of the lake accumulating up to three feet of bark peat in just a couple years and vertically floating logs singing to the bottom of the lake resulted in buried trees in only a decade similar to the trees of Yellowstone's fossil forests which are also buried in volcanic layers even though Mount st. Helens is a very small catastrophe compared to the flood or the major catastrophes immediately following the flood it provides a better clue to what happened in those times than the slow geologic processes which are most commonly seen in the present okay so what this showed was that under catastrophic conditions you can get a lot of change in a short period of time they showed these rock layers that were here you see the person at the bottom for an idea of how big how many rock layers are there those rock layers were formed in a matter of hours it did not take millions of years all it took was the right condition they talked a little bit about this Canyon this is called an engineer's Canyon it's 140th the scale of the Grand Canyon it was cut out in 9 hours that's all it took right and just took a catastrophe now there's a little river that runs through that Canyon and I'm gonna tell you right now that River didn't make that Canyon right because we know we observed it in the present it just took 9 hours to carve that out now I would say the same is true for the Grand Canyon when you go there now when you go there they'll tell you the Colorado River carved that out over millions of years nope it did not there's no way it would not look like that it looks a lot like it happened very very quickly not that long ago one of the evidences of that is the fact that the faces of the canyon are very steep ok and they don't look like they've been weathered away for millions of years right they're much more recent because they're the result of a probably a post-flight catastrophe that carved that out and probably just a very short period of time as well now let's go on and talk about the fossils and one of my favorite thing to deal with with fossils is talking about soft tissue ok stretchy soft tissue that we find inside dinosaur bones ok because it combines biology and paleontology and so that's what I love about it so there this finding was first discovered sort of back and about 2005 should say someone's really popularized I had been discovered before that but the more and more techniques got better people were able to see this and so what they found what you're seeing here is dinosaur soft tissue so this is blood vessels right here that's what these are and the things inside the blood vessels are exactly what we would expect these are red blood cells now of course when you see something like this it's like well is it real or is it just an artifact of something that they did to the fossil and so what they did was they did protein analysis of these structures to say are they really what we think they are or not turns out they are okay they have the exact proteins we would expect to find in blood vessels and in red blood cells and they have done a lot of research on this over the years to show what looks like almost fresh bone I did a lot of work on bone biology from my graduate study so I know what it should look like and it looks like fresh bone looks a lot like this only this is supposedly 65 million years old okay some people even say that when they do this soft tissue analysis it even has a small to it which is not something you would expect okay from something that is that old it just should not be in this state if it's that old and they found it in in dinosaur bones that are much older than this that are up to like 125 million years old and they're finding it basically in every dinosaur bone they look at all right so how did they deal with this because these types of structures they no can't shouldn't be here after millions of years so I want you to listen to dr. Mary Schweitzer who's one of the first scientists to really popularized this find and help people understand it and listen to what she says about her discovery not gonna believe this but when she picked up a small piece to stop the reaction by putting it in water it stretched and it's freund and it moved all over the place so we knew we had something pretty unusual it appears to be soft tissue when they look at neighboring parts of the bone they're even more surprised I'll pop the blood vessels and they were pretty incredible and I said I don't believe it that's not possible we need to do it again and again it's one of those just goose bump inducing scientific moments that's all I can say and if they don't really happen very often blood vessels should not exist in fossilized bone many scientists believe organic molecules can't last more than a hundred thousand years yet Schweitzer's bone is 68 million years old or is it is it really that old or not so as a biologist I worked a lot with DNA and tissues and cells and trust me even under pristine condition they don't last that long okay they don't even last that long in our observable time that we can see so it's clearly a problem I know she says I don't believe it that's not possible you need to do it again because they're like no way we know this tissue can't last millions of years yet here it is so what did they say how do they try to deal with this in their worldview they would say well look it can last millions of years not oh maybe it's actually a lot younger okay which is what this would definitely indicate they say no millions of years is absolutely true even though again that's based on their ideas about the past not on God's Word who saw everything happened was an eyewitness to creation an inspired man to write that down that's based on their ideas they're gonna keep on believing that in spite of the evidence okay they're trying to find a way that these things could be preserved over millions of years now they haven't had much luck and they're not going to because this isn't plausible in a millions of years scenario it's only possible if these things are a few thousand years old now creationist I've been doing research in this area as well and this is an electron microscope image taken of a Triceratops horn it has been conventionally dated to be millions of years old and they find these cells they're called osteocytes these are mature bone cells and osteocytes have a lot of these little tendrils that come off to the sides they're very fragile they break very easily I would not expect to see them in something that's millions of years old okay they just shouldn't be there in fact it shouldn't even look like a cell it should just be totally obliterated because of the time factor there and yet there it is and just to give you a comparison this is the bone from the Triceratops tone and this is fresh bone it is actually very difficult to tell the difference because they they do look actually quite similar again not something you would expect if that bone is millions of years old but if it's only a few thousand years old you would definitely might be much more likely to expect that which shows that these fossils were buried as a result most of them were buried as a result of Noah's Flood and they're just a few thousand years old now that's just - and obviously there are many many more that point to a global catastrophic flood that occurred just a few thousand years ago so we talked about the three big issues or I've given you some answers to hopefully some questions or objections that people have with the ark the animals and the flood and now we want to go on and talk just real briefly about the rest of these seas because to show you again why the flood is so important why is that matter for the rest of scripture about a hundred years after the flood we come to the sea of confusion and so God had told Noah and his family to multiply and fill the earth but they didn't listen they disobeyed and they multiplied but they stayed in one place and they built this tower and so God judged their rebellion by confusing their languages right and as a result it's called the Tower of Babel right because it sounds like they were babbling to one another but they did migrate out they did fill the earth and from that we actually get the formation of the different people groups or ethnicities or cultures in different areas now what's interesting is almost every single one of those cultures has a flood legend now how is that well it makes sense from a biblical view it's pretty hard to explain from a not a non biblical view how three hundred different ethnicities could have a very very similar account to the one that's in the Bible well they have that because all of them were together at the Tower of Babel they were listening to Noah Shem ham and Japheth they were all alive they were all giving first-hand accounts of this now like but what happened alright so why are these flood legends okay why are they missed why do they have things in them that there's no way that makes them no way could be true well because like a really bad game of telephone now most of the older younger people in here have no clue what I'm talking about this is nothing to do with smartphones okay it's a game you play right and as you pass the whisper along right it gets message gets distorted and changed that's the what happened here okay it got distorted and changed they went away from the eyewitness accounts and started adding or changing things but they do have some similarities with the true account that's given to us in Scripture so why does creation corruption catastrophe and confusion which are the first four C's found in the first eleven chapters of Genesis why does that really matter well it matters for the last three beginning with Christ and again we know from Scripture that his birth is first promised in Genesis right in genesis 3:15 after Adam and Eve sinned God is cursing them God is cursing a serpent who again tempted Eve says that I will put enmity or hatred between you and the woman and between your seed and her seed capital s that seed is Jesus Christ right yes Satan would bruise his heel he would die horrific death on the cross but Jesus Christ would crush Satan's head by dying and resurrecting from the dead all right so that's what we need to understand that that promise because of our Adam and Eve just did we need the rest of the Bible right because what's the rest of the Bible about the prophecies of Jesus coming his coming and is coming again right that's what it's all about it's all about Jesus and we need him we need the cross because of what happened in Genesis chapter 3 because Adam sinned because we have a sin problem we need a sin solution right we have the bad news in Genesis we need the good news of Jesus Christ and and Paul talked about this a lot he said for ins and Adam all die even so in Christ all shall be made alive and so it is written the first man Adam became a living being the last Adam became a life-giving spirit so we have that very obvious connection between Adam and the gospel itself you realized that Adam is that that's the foundation his sin and what he did there that's the foundation for the gospel right up here that's why we need that so it's important but there's another connection I think we can draw here as well that has to do with the art because the Ark had one or in which the animal is a Noah's family ensure there was no other way on to the ark and in 2nd Peter we read that Noah was a preacher of righteousness now we don't know exactly what Noah said during the time that he was building the ark but since it took several decades I'm sure he had ample opportunity to talk to people about what was coming right he believed that that what that's what was coming and worldwide flood and I can't help but think he would have told people to repent of their sins and worship the one true God and because he knew then once he and animals and his family entered the are always fun to do that because man everyone's like oh you better wake up and listen to this ok because God would shut that door and God is patient but he's also just and after many years potentially of Noah preaching of repentance calling people to worship God it was now too late for anyone to change their mind and they were destroyed in a global catastrophic flood but the door on the ark reminds me of another one right when Jesus said I am the door if anyone enters by me he will be saved Jesus through his death and resurrection paid the penalty for our sins he is the only way by which we can be saved and how are we saved it's it's actually really easy if we confess and we confess we repent of our sins we believe we will be saved that's what that's the essence of the gospel and it's really important that we make that decision now because just as the people and know his time suffered judgment there's another one coming the final judgment right in second Peter 3 we read about this it says there will be scoffers in the last days it will say where is the promise of his coming for since the father's fell asleep all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation people say hey nothing's gonna happen right everything's always been this way it will continue to be this way that's for this day willfully forget the by the Word of God the heavens were of old and they were standing out of the water and in the water so they scoff at creation they don't believe that and they scoff at the flood by which the world then exists to perish being flooded with water and we see this today very clearly I mean people say one of the last days well ever since Jesus is time Jesus is resurrection right we've had the past 2,000 years these are the last day and so we see people people were doing it in Peter's time I'm sure and they're doing it today they scoff at creation they scoff at the flood they say hey that's not true well and if that's not true and the gospel wasn't true because the Gospels rooted in that history it's why we need Jesus Christ but Peter warns us like I say there's gonna be another judgement whether people will believe it or not and this time it will not be by flood because God promised he would never do that again but by fire but God is patient and he wants people to repent and be saved he's long-suffering not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance because he's a gracious merciful loving compassionate God and he wants people to come through the door of his son Jesus Christ to be saved and because what's going to happen eventually we're going to have the consummation when there'll be a new heavens and a new earth and if we know Christ is our Savior we get to spend eternity with him forever and that new heaven in new earth and I know I'll be there and I want as many people as possible to be there with me and that's why we witness that's why we do what we do even here at the Creation Museum and the Ark Encounter now I want to end so that's sort of the seven seas and how the ark sort of fits into that history and we understand the importance of that event but I want to talk about what I kind of go back to my talked about the very beginning of this presentation and that is young people not believing in the truth of God's Word I have a real heart for young people I have I have a 14 year old daughter I guess she's not this one up here 14 year old daughter I work a lot in children's ministry in my church I actually teach college online for a couple of university so I'm interacting with young people all the time and I see their questions I see their doubts I have a woman right now in one of my classes it's a creation/evolution class I teach online she's 66 years old she's been in the church all our life and she said to me why have I never heard this stuff before why am I just now understanding biblical creation the flood the scientific evidence for that I've been in the church all my life why is this never been presented to me and it makes me sad because I I realize it hasn't been so she wasn't able to teach her children right and they couldn't teach their children and so what have we got we've got a lot of we got a lot of people who either aren't believers or who are believers but don't really understand or believe that God's Word is true and and that's a problem a big big problem and so and I don't think this has happened intentionally but I'd rather think unintentionally a lot of times it has happened we haven't been good about teaching people what they you know what the Bible says I mean maybe what but not why and understanding apologetics being able to defend what we believe and why we believe it and so we need to we need to be doing a better job of that okay that's what I'm saying is we you shouldn't be 66 years old and not understanding this that that's just not acceptable because we've got those answers right and we need to be giving those answers to people because what's happened is like a little Johnny here he comes to Sunday School and he hear his teacher teach about Noah's Ark and probably this is the pictures will show him because it's rampant throughout children's Sunday school material today and again I'm not saying she's doing it intentionally but unintentionally she's leading him astray leading him to believe in something that is that is not true that's not how the ark looked right and so cuz he goes out there under the world and they and he talks to maybe other people about this but he's confronted by movies and schoolbooks and friends and family and TV and they start asking Johnny a lot of questions like well where all that water come from Johnny and I mean come on all those animals could not fit on the ark everyone knows that rock layers take millions of years to lay down a global flood just simply is not possible because everyone knows that Noah's Flood is a myth because the Bible is not true and so what happens to that Ark it can't withstand that okay it just can't and it shouldn't because it's not the true Ark and so he goes back to Sunday School maybe he asked his teacher of those questions but she doesn't know the answers and she says why don't know Johnny but let's just talk about Jonah in the big fish right or just trust in Jesus Donny that's the most important thing just believe that you know what Johnny says as he gets older he says well you know what if that if that story about the Ark and the flood isn't real and the true how could it man possibly live in the belly of a fish for three days and don't get birth and dead people don't come back to life says I don't believe any of it it's all myth and he leaves the church and that is exactly what's happening in many churches today young people are leaving in droves so what needs to change right because we're not stuck here we've got answers to these questions we need to always be ready to give a defense and answer an apologia for the hope that is in you because this is about the gospel of Jesus Christ right as I've already shown you this is about the history that the gospel is written in this is about the truthfulness and authority of all of God's words we need to show him pictures of the Ark that look like that because there is no excuse people all of you know the truth okay based on the dimensions given to us in Scripture we can show them the other pictures but then please show them why that's wrong and why that doesn't work because we want to connect God's Word to God's world right we want to help them know that they have a reason faith and guess what you don't have to have a PhD to do that okay I have a PhD in one area not geology not astronomy not paleontology but I can give some basing answers to questions that people have and then for what I don't know I say you know what here's some experts that can help you with this they do have PhDs in those areas good that's what we do with everything else in life and the same is true here and so we need to answer some basic questions that people have how did they get the animals on the ark how did those where those rock layers laid down quickly and how those fossils form quickly and we help them know that the account of the flood is real and that the account of Jonah is real and that the account of Jesus Christ is real because these aren't just stories right they're real they're history they really happen and we help them know that that they are believing in real history and that what they see out there in the world confirms and supports what God's Word says they have answers so when they go out there into the world and they're confronted by all those things cuz that's not going to stop right it's going to keep coming they can share the truth because they have answers and they can answer the questions that people have in this age and they can pass that truth on to their children and their grandchildren and so that we can have equipped and educated believers that know what they believe and why they believe it and they can answer the questions of the a every age has different questions right Luther had things to deal with that we don't deal with today right because those were the questions of his age and dealing with the Reformation we're dealing with different ones it's the same war the war is over the truth of God's Word it's just different battles so the question is are we prepared for the battle that we're in with today right because this is important and I see a lot of parents out there I guarantee I see a lot of grandparents out there and every single one of us has that responsibility to share the truth of God's Word with the next generation and I and grandparents you too you know off the hook okay there are a lot of resources that can help you do this effectively and I want to see you do that because you know I would agree that the world is getting darker but I look at that as a great opportunity because light shines brighter in the darkness and I think we have a great opportunity to evangelize and share that truth with people more I think now than ever before and we need to be effectively doing that so how can we do that sign up for our newsletter this comes out once a month it's free gun sign up online or at guest services and it's a great way to stay up to date with everything that's happening here at the Creation Museum the Ark Encounter and Answers in Genesis if you want to see the Ark being built this is a great DVD it has a really cool time-lapse video of how that was done as well as a book that gives you a ton of details on that as well if you want to learn more about how do we get all those animals from the 2 or the 7 pairs that were on the ark this is a great book to help you with that a flood of evidence this is a great sort of general QA on the ark and the flood you just want a good overall book on it that's a great resource if you want a good DVD on it if you want to like to watch things rather than read things out Noah's Flood washing away the millions of years it's a great DVD again looking at it from both a biblical and a scientific perspective if you want more about the shape of the art Tim loved it an engineer who's worked a lot on the shape of the Ark and understanding than that and modeling that gives a lot of perspective in that DVD if you want to learn more about the flood legends from all over the world we have a book that covers that as well as a series of book this is the first one in the series these are historical fictions they're not again we don't know a lot about Noah's life before the flood but these three books kind of encompass that and maybe what his life was like what the world was like at that time and I am pretty I love historical fiction but I am extremely picky about what I read and these are very very good they will keep you engaged and think about what that world look like tons of children's resources so no more buying those books with the cutesy arcs okay it is for Noah a special door remarkable rescue all showing for kids of all ages and this is just some of them I'm the truth of God's Word the lie of evolution millions of years by Ken Ham our CEO next in the Bible this is the text book of our ministry it's our heartbeat it's who we do it's why we do what we do so if you want to learn more about that I encourage you to get that but gospel we say how do we evangelize in the world that we live in today this is a great book short book but easy to read and understand and really helps us think about when we evangelize how we evangelize beginning with that first book of the Bible already gone ready to return our studies that we've done of Millennials really looking at where they're at and how we can reach them when it comes to a lot of these issues the answer is books 1 2 3 & 4 I love these I use these all the time okay where do King at his wife honeymoon today means a day what about radiometric dating what about aliens what about dinosaurs lots of great information we have versions for teens as well as versions for children because we want everyone to be equipped we have our youichi's special we want to look for books DVDs at Deep UPS DVDs and CDs I have a little green dot on them to make that package for your family it really helps just save money when you do it that way we have a magazine that comes out six times a year and it has a kids section in it so there's something for the kids there's something for you and it's all about building that biblical worldview how do we do that in the world that we live in and we have a special offer today you can get the current issue for 395 or if you subscribe today but we'll give you the current issue for free as well as a free digital subscription okay so my daughter likes to say that I'm an old person okay and as an old person I like print okay I want you actually physically hold on to the magazine she would rather have it on a device okay so it helps to reach that next generation of young people and you can load it on his devices as you want we have our begin book this is for new believers unbelievers it's kind of a big picture view of Scripture basically what it is is it's portions of Scripture beginning in Genesis going all the way to Revelation with some commentary to how to tie it all together and then what does it mean and answers to ten most asked questions so we have that available and legacy for three dollars as well as our pocket guides on various issues like the ark and the flood for two dollars each I know many of you either have been or are visiting the ark so that's great we also have a family conference coming up here and just a few weeks actually this month after I get back from vacation um we'll have this conference there's a teen track there's a kid's track there's an adult track so there really is something for everybody I'm gonna have a brand new talk talking about how do we get all those animals just from the two of each kind that were on the ark so we'll be talking more about that at Lane and so I have social media all those fun things even find out more about my ministry there I'm not gonna have time for Q&A afterwards because I'm going to be back here at 2 o'clock for a news program that we do every Monday and Thursday so encourage you all to come back for that we'll talk about different science and culture things and you have been a great audience and I hope you enjoy the rest of your day here thank you thank you dr. prison at 2 o'clock if she said answers News live on Facebook will be in Legacy Hall and as soon as they do the sound check will open up the doors for y'all to be with
