hey everybody it's robert and you're watching sidestep adventures and today robert over there behind me and myself robert are in the backwoods of alabama exploring another old cemetery where would the makers mark be on these you think would be on this here yeah it would be right under the engraving under the engraving yeah it's usually in the in a corner all under under the engraving i'll see you let's see it let's see what's all right so this is sacred to the memory of patrick henry mitchell son of james and elizabeth mitchell who was born may 21st 1822 and departed this life november 5th 1848 aged 26 years i will give unto him that is at thirst of the fountain of the water of life freely i am weary of loving what passes away the dearest the fondest alas may not stay i long for that land where partings are over death and the tombs divide hearts no there's more armadillo or gopher torch hole right there this is sacred to the memory of benjamin j mitchell son of james and elizabeth mitchell who was born november 15 1820 and departed this life june 8 1855 with a full assurance of glorious immortality beyond the grave [Applause] we've got a couple of unmarked graves right here [Applause] and you can see the indentation behind the white wooden cross [Applause] there's another one right there and another one right there now before i actually read the stone i want to point this out so this was made by the stone was made by madden and adams from columbus georgia which carried pretty good distance out here way back then and this is a stone maker that i've seen several times on the old graves around here i'd love to find out more information i don't see that maker much after the late 1840s or 1850s so this is sacred to the memory of mrs mary ea consort of wiley j harris and when it says consort on these old graves it means that she died while her husband was still living consort of wylie j harris and only daughter of randolph and avie mitchell she died at her residence in russell county alabama january 8 1847 aged 21 years 2 months and 5 days none knew thee but to love none named thee but to praise this is to the memory of sarah josephine daughter of randolph and martha mitchell died october 12 1845 aged one year 11 months and eight days there's an epitaph at the bottom it says weep not for she is not dead to the memory of mrs of miss to the memory of miss sarah ann daughter of jethro and rebecca denson who died june 2nd 1842 aged 18 years 3 months and 18 days we love to think of thee to fancy thy calm presence with us yet as one of those sweet stars of evening which never wane or set and this one is also made by madden and adams from columbus georgia okay robert i found something right here that might be of interest to us looks like a corner post and i think that's iron corner post that's been broken off or yeah that's a post because there's a hinge pin right there look at that did that work and look at the masonic emblem on there get a closer look at it well these are two amazing graves right here in memory of milton a browder born january 17 1802 and died july 25th 1859 four is the lightning cometh out of the east and shineth even unto the west so shall also the coming of the son of man be he was taken away in the full maturity of his powers and usefulness he left in the hearts of his fellow citizens an enduring monument to his memory he died with the christians hope of a blessed immortality as the waters fell from the sea and the flood decayeth and drieth up so man lieth down and riseth not till the heaven be no more they shall not awake nor be raised out of their sleep this is sacred to the memory of macon a only child of milton a and mary m browder born in barber county alabama july 7 1840. [Applause] weep not for those whom the veil of the tomb and life's happy morning hath hid from our eyes our sin through a blight or the spirit's young bloom our earth had profound what was born for the skies our earth had profaned what was born for the skies now this has got to be one of the most impressive stones that i've seen and as you can see it's unfortunately knocked over so this is sacred to the memory of mary m browder daughter of jesse wilson born in rockingham county north carolina 28 december 1815 married to m.a browder in october 1839 died first december 1859 so what do you think think these are graves that have lost their markers one here possibly one there i can't tell if that one's there or not yep that's definitely right there is definitely a grave [Applause] right here but no headstones all right so the last marked grave out here that we're going to take a look at today is actually really fascinating um it's kind of tragic too so we'll go ahead and take a look at that you can see this one has been repaired very well protected so it'll it'll last it had been broken at the bottom now this is sacred to the memory of henry blake who was born april 29 1822 and was murdered and robbed by george w lohr february 9th 1841. this stone also made by madden and adams from columbus georgia and on the back side of this stone there's marking for another burial sacred to the memory of elizabeth blake the mother of henry blake who was born october 30th 1790 and died from grief at the loss of her son september 28th 1841 so i think that's a really tragic story written on these two stones so from what research that robert's been doing um he found out that henry blake was from mississippi and was out here in alabama he was visiting relatives right yeah his mother was a mitchell and she married henry senior and they moved on the mississippi so the junior came back to visit the mitchells here and after his visit he mounted his horse by himself and headed west home across the state of alabama and his body was found about 15 miles from here by a young slave woman uh and she reported it to her plantation owner and he discovered a newspaper among his belongings there that was a columbus enquirer newspaper that the mitchells had fixed him lunch that day when he left that morning and wrapped it up in a newspaper and the uh plantation owner sent word sent a rider back here to this community and uh his uncle showed up and identified the body so pretty pretty incredible history and very very sad history here in this little cemetery i hope you've enjoyed this video this documentation of another very old very historic cemetery and again so many stories in this place and we know a few of them this time so many times they're all lost lost to time i hope you've enjoyed don't forget to like share and subscribe and i'll see you next time you
