hello everyone I'm buck wsr Weezer and I'm here today with you for another lawnmower repair project this is a Toro recycler and the customer complained to me was that the engine will start and run for five minutes and then it will cut out as if it were no longer getting gas that's all I know but when I saw that this was equipped with the Kohler engine that has the automatic choke I said to myself I'll bet you ten bucks the choke plate is not opening as it should and that's why as it warms up in three to five minutes it chokes itself out now I had showed you in a previous video and I'll link to that so you can check it out I called it watch the Kohler automatic choke in action and we verified I I filmed I removed the air cleaner assembly so we had a good view of that the carburetor and I showed you at high speed what happens in those three to five minutes where the choke plate gradually opens by itself automatic smart choke system and I'm betting that what we've got going on here is a similar problem where the choke is not opening up so I think the first thing we should do is verify the customer complaint so remove the air cleaner cover and we can see in there I don't know if you can see it maybe you can that the a choke plate is definitely in the close position as it should be on a cold engine well what I want to do is start it up I'll let it run three to five minutes and we'll see what happens now I won't make you watch the full three to five minutes but it's got fuel so let's start it up and see what happens that choke plate should open and if it doesn't we'll know that's what the problem is we'll have to free up that mechanism mechanism for that automatic choke smart choke is a little bit sensitive it easily gets cruddud up with debris and if the choke plate doesn't open yeah when the engine warms up it'll die so let's see what we can do watch your ears people well contrary to my joke play kiddo wide open now there was a moment about three minutes in hesitate as it was going to stumble all right so one of the things that's frustrating is when you test out the mower and it does not do what the customer says that it does so this never stalled out on me when I was manually forcing the choke plate closed it began to stutter a little bit as you might expect I don't know exactly what to say I'm surprised I was expecting the choke system to be faulty but it seems to be working okay but maybe if you can't can see that maybe we just got some dirt in this carburetor that's not there's a lot of crud in here this this air filter is just a foam sponge that doesn't instill a lot of confidence in me people don't generally do a lot of maintenance and I'm wondering if we can just open this up maybe clean out that carburetor okay yes sir that foam air filter doesn't instill a whole lot of confidence in me in terms of keeping this carburetor clean this engine clean ten millimeter socket one slide that out [Applause] so they've got a lot of crud buildup in here and you can see it making its way into the chamber the throat of the carburetor okay so while we're here there's something else that I decided I'd like to do that would be to actually drop the bowl on the carburetor and make sure there's no crud in there and to do that I'm going to pinch off the fuel line with a pair of do that right here [Applause] and there will be some gas that comes out of the bowl when I remove it ten millimeter not here at the bottom bowl comes down oh my goodness I'm so glad I did this take a look right there people can you see that I'm the crud in there can you see that little girl another little girl here not sure if it's too clear on the I can't tell if it's clear on the on the camera what's going on it's very possibly this is the biggest problem that we're dealing with this just thinks at all winter without use and had fuel in it and now that that ethanol enriched fuel Gunks up the carburetor the fuel that's sitting in the bottom of your carburetor bowl so I really think we're going to clean that out you can also see down there at the base of the pickup tube here on the bottom of the carburetor that's all kind of nasty so we need to wash that off clean out this crud here let me go get the see this crud in there you makes you wonder how it was running at all [Applause] oh yeah yeah this is gonna be a lot better I got a video entitled 10-minute mower fix following winter storage which I will link to so you can check it out but it's basically how to clean out the plug and the bowl of your carburetor so it doesn't with the gunked-up fuel that's sat in it all winter and people just don't get around to draining their fuel at the end of the season you could empty the fuel out and then just start up the mower and let it run dry that would work too I'm sorry bunk Jim alright I'll bet a clean bowl down here it's gonna go a long way getting this thing running better [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] alright release our clamp on the fuel line okay now we're gonna put this guy back together fuel tank vent line is right here breather tube right there [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] okay I think we're gonna be back in business now that's it we added a fuel filter which I think will can't hurt clean the carburetor out a little bit but mainly I think the biggest thing we did was to get the gunk out of the bowl which could very easily clog up this carburetor and we'll yeah we'll put this back on the ground and see how it runs
