oftentimes we act like the world because we're afraid of stepping on toes we're afraid of the ridicule or the criticism we might even receive if we show ourselves to be true followers of christ and deep down we're afraid that somehow by letting go of this world we might be missing out but when we separate ourselves from this world we are not depriving ourselves of any good thing rather we are taking hold of the promises of god which are far greater isaiah chapter 48 verse 17 god says i am the lord your god who teaches you what is best for you who directs you in the way you should go if only you had listened to me your peace would have been like a river your righteousness like the waves of the sea this is the glorious freedom of the righteous life enjoy it the world's alternative is deceptive wages some sin is very very tempting though like greed like lust and the problem is that these are inside us and the illusion is that we can indulge secretly and never be seen but those chapters in romans help us with this first roman says you can't deal with temptation by giving into it that's not as strange as it sounds because when we face temptation we find ourselves thinking look god pardoned me at the cross so he'll forgive the sin i'm thinking about right now so why not go ahead and sin i'll feel good and i'll also be right with god well it's not possible to have your cake and eat it too deliberate sin like this is a fleeting pleasure we're left with shame and remorse it stunts our christian life and witness a fog seeps into our life and contaminates us then romans also says we can't deal with temptation by changing our behavior by dealing with temptation in our own strength by using life skills by forcing ourselves to behave for one thing we'll fail but also we'll end up self-righteous sneering at weaker christians unattractive prim and proper instead in those two chapters paul tells us to face temptation with the truth the truth is that the lord jesus defeated sin at the cross and he stands alongside us so we can walk away from a temptation in his company in his strength with his encouragement first peter chapter 1 verse 14 to 16 says as obedient children do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance but as he who called you is holy you also be holy in all your conduct since it is written you shall be holy for i am holy the reason the world acts the way it does is because of ignorance they do not comprehend the beauty and the worth of the gospel they do not understand that what god has in store for them is infinitely better than the empty promises of sin but god has opened our eyes he has called us out of our ignorant ways into something greater second corinthians 7 verse 1 since we have these promises beloved let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit bringing holiness to completion in the fear of god in the old testament the hebrew people would perform ritual cleansings after encountering anything unclean what if we showed that same kind of dedication to the spots of worldliness in our lives what if we were determined to make a clean break with any habit any behavior any attitude not pleasing to god second timothy chapter 2 verse 21 says therefore if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable he will be a vessel for honorable use set apart as holy useful to the master of the house ready for every good work there is a struggle that we all face we wrestle in the spirit realm and then we also wrestle against the flesh and the carnal sinful desires of our bodies now in order to win this fight this fight between good and evil we need to be covered in prayer and i say prayer because second corinthians chapter 10 verse 4 says for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds meaning that when we wrestle against these rulers and authorities when we wrestle against the spiritual forces of evil when we wrestle against our flesh the weapons that we use are not physical weapons but they are divine in nature the weapons we use are prayer the word of god worship the word of our testimony and of course our faith and i encourage you today to make the decision that you will become a prayer warrior and as prayer warriors everything we love everything we're associated with must be covered by prayer and the blood of jesus that means our family and loved ones our friends and our lives should be placed under the umbrella of prayer and the blood of jesus christ it's only when we become prayer warriors that we can defeat this unseen enemy lurking in the dark it's only through prayer that we can experience god's true power and might in our lives only then can we experience what it's like to live under the divine protection of god almighty [Music] psalm 91 verse 1 to 4 says he who dwells in the shelter of the most high will abide under the shadow of the almighty i will say to the lord my refuge and my fortress my god in whom i trust for he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence he will cover you with his opinions and under his wings you will find refuge his faithfulness is a shield and buckler the devil will try and plant a seed within you when he can't affect you physically [Music] that's what i'm talking about when i say name your enemy take a good honest look at yourself what is the devil trying to use to distract you from being an effective christian what's he using to discourage you doubtful thoughts thoughts of insecurity or inadequacy name your enemy and rebuke it and we all have one no one is so holy so saved that they have no internal private things that they're dealing with [Music] the bible says those who belong to christ jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires that verse is all about identifying that sin within that ungodly desire that unhealthy passion and then saying no to it get to the point where you say my love for god is greater than my love for anything else that's how you crucify your flesh so if your enemy is bitterness it has to go if it's unforgiveness that has to go if it's low self-esteem stand for it no more call on the power that jesus christ offers and defeat the enemy within [Music] psalm 89 15 has a wonderful promise it says blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you who walk in the light
