hello and welcome everybody to maui flight academy i'm laurence and i will be demonstrating today we're going to reverse engineer how to land softly this is a cirrus sr22 g3 we have full tanks and i am at about 175 pounds today a few pounds and on board so we're definitely below maximum gross weight so the speeds that we'll be touching down are not going to be at the published speeds that you are reading about in your flight operations manual again please always fly according to the flight operations manual this is for demonstration purposes only we're going to be demonstrating how blue donut is 1.3 bso which is going to be your sweet spot for the uh for takeoff for landing we're gonna what we're gonna do in this reverse engineering is [Music] we're gonna taxi at high speed with full flaps and show you how much power you're going to need to carry just a wheelie that nose wheel and we're going to come up with a number that number is going to be then the marker that we're going to use plus or minus a little bit uh and again for those of you don't have percentage of power in your equipment you can use rpm manifold pressure whatever it is or you can just do it by feel and then what we're going to do is use that power setting as we cross over the fence maintaining blue donut angle of attack and then just transitioning into that round out and we'll touch down super soft all right let's go have some fun now what we're going to do is we're going to go on to the runway we have full flaps and we also have one two one and we have full tanks and it's just me at about 175 pounds with maybe 5 or 10 pounds of gear okay so we are going to get on onto the runway here and i do not want to take off what we're going to do is essentially a very high speed taxi just to the point of a nice wheelie so here we go remember we have full flaps in so we are simulating touching down we're reverse engineering a soft landing okay here we go i'm just going to accelerate so we we're going to get to that point where the power is going to start being reduced okay here comes the aoa and i'm going to start reducing the power and now there's blue donut i'm still on the ground [Music] there we go now that's like a good landing right there the right of blue donut i'm on the ground i'm wheeling and i got 14 power okay all right let's try that again all right so here's runway 2 adding some power [Music] hey the stick is slightly back not a whole lot wait till the aoa starts coming alive all right now i'm going to start reducing that power i'm going to start reducing the power and i want to get a wheelie with the blue donut right there there's your soft that is a reverse engineered so we're just right around blue top of the blue any added power okay so we're just holding off anyway don't tell us you'd like to turn this into a take off with a touch and go remember a hotel approved journal two three for takeoff [Music] okay so we took off i put in half flaps and we're gonna go and then try landing with 14 power maintain it as best we can the blue donut to show you is that we can actually be at blue donut in a descent with the nose pitched up three degrees so i'm slowing the aircraft down [Applause] now i'm going half laps four clicks forward okay so now we're going to go full flaps [Music] more clicks forward all right so now what we're going to do is we're going to find that aoa that i'm going to try and maintain about two and a half degrees pitch up and here comes the blue donut okay so we're half blue donut and we're descending at 300 feet a minute do you see what i mean by minimum sink right there's the blue donut there's 300 feet a minute with a blue donut and we're descending and our nose is above the horizon so that's what we're going to be touching down at all right let me get reestablished again always fly the aircraft according to the flight operations manual this is for demonstration purposes only okay so we're going to attempt another test 500. this is a short runway i'm sure you guys have seen this plenty of times on all my videos uh this is a little uh strip on the north shore molokai there's usually a little bit of wind gust wind shear um especially right on the short final 8080 whiskey final runway five kalapaka and the winds are about 20 knots okay so now i'm going to stabilize this with power [Applause] i am fast i'm way fast i'm going to slow her down trimming the nose up trying to get our blue donut i'm going to come in just a little bit faster than blue donut for the gus factor you can if you can see it but [Applause] a little bit of gas here and we will touch down without the stall horn as close to blue donut as possible [Music] all right here's 14 there's blue donut not even a little squeak it was just a roller beautiful this is hickam nikhil air force base sharing the space hero tower 37 16 heavy uh visual for right 37 16 all right so i've got a little bit of a left crosswind here [Applause] [Music] level 40 runway okay so i'm going to slow up kind of fast just because of the weight they do things check again win zero six zero at one four gus one niner all right i look like i need twelve percent there's blue donut and touchdown it was nice and soft hopefully you saw that [Applause] there's eight hotel whiskey right turn on delta hold short runway four left right turn on delta hold short of four left 808 hotels given the gusty conditions uh it's never going to be exactly perfect but in theory it's going to be correct and that is that we're at the sweet spot if you are at blue donut or just a touch above you're not gonna hit the nose away alpha remain outside of runway five because you're carrying a little power and you're carrying that sweet spot of power 96 people who have applied for a flight training scholarship and we are we've only raised about 3 500 for the scholarship we're raising it with two funds uh sales of these awesome flying hats and uh they're made by one of the cirrus pilots jeff hodge he owns a 22 and a jet uh it is a wonderful hat company i highly suggest that you guys uh take a look at that it's called fahrenheit and the other way we are raising funds is the sale of the hawaiian coffee it's 100 maui or 100 kahu coffee we do have the new rogue pilot blend which is the uh 49 columbia blend uh with the maui we'll put your airplane on the cover on the label it's really cool we make a little tiny margin on it but it really helps support once we get to 15 000 uh fulfilled into the funding for the scholarship we'll announce the winner and uh we're excited about that so thank you for watching aloha take care guys
