adventure is in my blood finding treasures big or small and having fun is what it's all about with my wife Melissa and our three kids life is pretty full but there is an amount we can't climb together this isn't your ordinary antiques store my name is Alex Archibald and this is curiosity hey guys and welcome to today's episode I am off to go pick up a really huge record collection and it's kind of bittersweet and the reason why it's bittersweet is that this record collection once belonged to my dad dawn now for those of you that don't know my dad was a musician he was a filmmaker at one point in his life and later in life he became I wouldn't even say a record collector I'd say a connoisseur of records now right after he passed we sold off the lion's share of his 10,000 record collection we've got it down to about a thousand but we kept back the thousand very best records that we felt were in his collection still a lot of Records we thought we had a deal somebody was interested in buying it and that deal fell through and my mom is kind of sick of looking at them so I ended up buying them off of her kind of hard for me to look at because I know a lot of this stuff we picked out together but so much that's in there I don't even know what's in there you know he was off collecting and buying and doing stuff all on his own so we're gonna grab the boxes of Records bring them back to my house I'm gonna go through them and see exactly what's left it out of this collection but before I do this I'm gonna need a much bigger vehicle the Cadillac just isn't gonna be able to hold all this stuff so today is a day for the trusty old ambulance but it hasn't moved pretty much well since before there were snow you know almost in spring I'm hoping it's going to start today and I've got to clear off you know several months worth of snow off of it but we're gonna give it a go his car has generally been really reliable I'm hoping that I'm gonna find that everything's okay here okay let's try a cold start on the ambulance do a little bit of gas oh there she goes what a good old car this is it's been probably a couple months since I've even started this car so I was a little bit shocked that it started about you ever find yourself in need of a reliable vehicle let's go pick up a 72 Pontiac ambulance really they're really good well the old ambulance should be warmed up enough for me to drive the cars parked side by side you kind of get the sense of how long the Cadillac is look these are pretty well nose to nose this Cadillac is about the same length it's a full-size ambulance from the seventies you know your average car the size of an ambulance okay windshield is cleared off let's see if I get out of the snow here and head over mom's to pick up the records so this is it what's left of my dad's office we've got tons of records in here and we've got boxes of it you know the Beatles box set and who posters and some of his fancier records with his turntables kind of sad that my dad's gonna be you know taking all the stuff down but hopefully we'll be able to find good homes for it down the road these are all things that were special to him but my mom gets to start a new life and decorate how she wants to decorate and that'll all be good now my dad had pretty eclectic tastes I mean I look at some of the records here and he's got everything from Tchaikovsky to the Flying Burrito Brothers and the Beatles but most of what he collected was early rock and roll rockabilly and kind of surf Bend and surf guitar kind of music so I won't be surprised I'm sure if I find some dick Dale and stuff like that in but what I need to do is start emptying these cubbies out here so that my mom can do whatever she wants with the shelving and get these all boxed up so I'm just gonna create a bunch of boxes and then transport over my house and we'll search through it there yeah I've got everything pretty much loaded up in the back here it's a good sized haul of things surprising records don't look like that much until you start putting them in boxes and it weighs like a metric ton but I'm gonna go through these kind of one box at a time and I guess try and start sorting it's gonna take me a while to do that's a lot of stuff but hopefully these few treasures in there we'll find out I'm trying to do this video like a regular kind of unboxing but for me there's a lot of emotion attached because I remember going with my dad to buy some of these and he collected this stuff over a period of years it was always a Christmas present or a birthday gift I knew what to get him because he was into records in music stuff so it is kind of bittersweet that it ends this way but we don't get to keep everything forever but it should be fun to go through still and we'll try and make our way through it and you know I haven't uh I've never really fully been through his record collection before so this'll be fun for me to see exactly what's in these boxes too a box number one kind of a mix I guess what I'm gonna do is go through and kind of see what we've got rolling stones I can think some of these are in plastic and he also collected ones that were factory sealed like this coffee of beach boys pets doubts Pet Sounds is still in its factory cellophane there's a few in here that are still unopened tragically hip though my dad had a connection to he directed the first two of their rock videos and that one has never been out of the package so tell me who's a collector of them good Canadian rock bed that's gonna be kind of a treat to get because it's gonna be in really great shape I unpacked pretty well the entire box of Records onto the table now my dad was in all sorts of different things he liked the kind of the girl rock bands like the shangri-la's and I could see some of these he paid over $100 for he also had a ton of 45s now these were separated and we sold off I kid you not probably like 3040 fives at a garage sale about a year and a half ago many of these were 45s in this pile and some were picture sleeves now the difference between a picture sleeve in a regular album you could buy them plain well that's actually they would have been more like this just a plain 45 and a basic cover but if you would have had fancier version you would have gone something like this now this is a Beatles fan club record that's pretty cool and there's all sorts I notice he's a he was a big Beatles fan so there's a lot of Beatles stuff in here there's Elvis Presley and he was a stickler for original pressings link wray i said he liked rockabilly so it's not surprising me that there's some rockabilly and other sorts of records in here and and you can tell the difference between a real one and a reproduction because the the real one obviously you can tell from the age of the cover but it's got the black label RCA dog these are all original pressings and some of these can be you know worth anywhere between like 20 50 dollars or and up depending upon the rarity and condition so this is a pretty good pile of stuff it's gonna take me a while to kind of go through all this magical mystery tour with the book it has little buckland inside beetles old brown shoe hard day's night and that's on the British Parliament later The Beatles hits why they should have rethought how they spelled that one if I had a potty mouth I might think that said something else but cool album so you have the maturity of a seven-year-old going through these records and then there's some newer stuff in here like the Cure and look you paid $50 for this one five by five rolling stones and was it's a first issue EP clipped corner promotional there's so many different things to know about collecting records it's like why on earth 139 dollars if I want to hold your hand that you know that sometimes it's the dead wax sometimes there's different things about it that make them a little bit more collectible but you really have to spend your time and go through looking these things up on the vine to see what the values are James Brown just live in America from Rocky really interesting variety of stuff as for some of the 33 s or the LPS that were in that we've got shangri-la's doing leader of the pack every day it was leader of the pack if you don't I don't know where you been there's the crystals of course you know songs like to do Ron Ron on Broadway he's a rebel you kind of get the idea the sort of stuff you light the Beatles Youngblood it looks like a German released powder blues band that was a Canadian band it's autographed by the whole band and you can see Willie there he must have played keyboards cuz he's got the keyboards all drawn out with the Beatles their first album on Parlophone it's $200 although I guess rainbow ballroom rare edmonton LP with promo ins are very good condition and it's got bands like The Lord's it's just these are all local bands southbound freeway some of them became something and some of them didn't move on to do anything else there's introducing the Beatles England's England's number one vocal group on v-j that's a pretty good one to come across and this is another one he loved the Ronettes anything early phil spector like this presenting the fabulous Ronettes featuring veronica and they'd songs like be my baby walk in the rain baby i love you Chapel of love you might not remember the name the raw nets but you definitely would remember those songs and there's a couple of them in here there's also one from somebody in Bell I'm not familiar with this but it's Dahl Gonzales it's autographed people's book here's a neat one that's a variant the rolling stone some girls camera what the big hit was off of this one oh yeah there it is beast of burden that was the hit off of this but if you look at the front of the cover you can see there's Marilyn Monroe but they didn't actually have the rights to use her image so this album cover got pulled very quickly and was destroyed and they ended up replacing it with I think Mick Jagger's face kind of in makeup as a replacement for that but these are early ones that have the Marilyn Monroe are desirable because well they got pulled they lost the lawsuit and if you if you bought it at the time you would have had a chance to get one but then that was only a short run it's also what they call like sort of a I cut out you can feel the indentation where the sleeve on the inside is separated from the cardboard of the outside Oh a good early cover and it still has a Marilyn Monroe honor I've decided it was just way too much to try and process at home so I'm bring it into the shop Sean's here helping me out right behind me and there's a couple turntables we're actually gonna try and set them up I think right there we'll continue dad's legacy of listen music and bring it to the top I think we've got a nice turntable the technics that we're gonna try and get working he actually had to at his house one was this linear tracking turntable which is a really odd piece of design and instead of the turntable the arm rotating with it it went straight across now to find one of these in working condition is fairly tough this would have been really state of the art back in probably the late 80s but the one I want to use is actually a Michonne if you want to take that one we're gonna set this to technics on its a SL 3300 direct drive these would be prized even by DJs because it's direct drive you can scratch on them like so except you wouldn't make those corny dad scratching sounds but I know my dad had a really good needle on there and this was his regular use turntable I think he'll be perfect for the shop taking a bit of a break from sorting through records because very soon I'm gonna have to ship a bunch of this stuff out putting them on eBay mail him out to people all over the place one thing you wouldn't expect to be a great box for shipping out records our pizza boxes they're pretty much the exact right size so I found a food wholesaler in town that sells these I brought in a record to kind of size it up and you can get an idea about where it's gonna fit so I'm gonna buy the right size I think the 14-inch one will be perfect I'll have a nice variety of pizza boxes to ship some records with I've decided to come back to the shop today I've shipped off successfully my first album which was a queen record I sold to a nice lady down in the US and I am gonna be starting to sort through the records here at the store the challenge I'm having is that my store is already pretty full and I don't really have a lot of room for another 800 records I did make some progress the other day we got the stereo system hooked up we got the turntable working as you can see but now I have to look around and try and find a place where I'm going to put all these records I think I'm gonna empty off some shelves try and create some room in the back and hopefully we'll have a way that they can be visible viewable and shoppable for people to come and check them out I think this area right here some turntables and an old Mac computer and some lamps and stuff I'm gonna redo this try and fit all my records in this one particular area this one particular spot I've got some room to play around with up top I can put some of these other things up there but I want to make sure that people kind of like how I have it on this side you can still flip through cuz you want to make sure you can flip through and go oh look you know here's the record I've been looking for for example so everything has got to go and be organized so I'm gonna start off by clearing off this entire shelf and then getting everything moved over now the sorting process we've got beetles live at the Hollywood Bowl in this one let's see that has the Beatles concert tickets which are stuck on the outside that's a little bit earlier a little bit cooler Moody Blues great song nights in white satin' good album but a little bit more on the common side what I'm trying to see is you know what there is I think that's our Dolby perhaps the blinded me with science guy if it is I think Elvis George Harrison Thunderball the Man From UNCLE these are all spy theme albums Jimi Hendrix that kind of goes in a little bit better pile and other Hendrix these ones are all a little better shave fish Lennon Plastic Ono Band Duke Ellington it's gonna take a while to kind of go through these Edgar Winter and he had a twin brother Johnny they're both albinos the winter brothers very bluesy good stuff John Mile Blues fusion everything is just kind of mixed up it's not really organized probably was organized based on what he used to like listening to Brian Auger and the Trinity that's more of an unusual album right there that up there some of these I'll have to look through you know and then Mozart like I said you just don't really know what's gonna be in there and George Carlin that's you know the strangest combination of albums side by side I'm sure Stephane Grappelli great jazz guitarist if you've ever listened to him hot club in France he played with Django Reinhardt really great guy Nat King Cole so I'm just gonna kind of go through these because some of these are gonna be a little bit more collectible than others Cheech and Chong of course Tommy Chong right there on the right it was on that 70 shoot I think he played the hippie in that show he's from Canada I believe Vancouver originally Stevie Wonder Duke Ellington lots of great music but the trick is sort of separating out with these tame these these albums into one's a little bit more unique or a little bit more rare the easy beats these sort of records are kind of neat because a lot of times you find the 45 like Sugar Shack Jimmy Gilmer in the fireballs because they only would have had you know a couple big hits probably and you don't see the LPS so finding the LP can be kind of a cool thing their original Bo Diddley I'm just going to keep going through and try and get all these organized into their respective piles that looks like Led Zeppelin I believe yeah all my love yeah some great records here's a couple Colin's Led Zeppelin's first album of course - the famous Hindenburg crash on the cover you can see those two variations one with the more yellow cover ones the more white and they're different numbers once Atlanta for 0:03 1 and the other ones s db2 1/6 you've got your they're both stereo sometimes I see a mono variation but you know depending upon what year it was printed this one looks like it came out in 69 then was re-released in 73 in Germany oftentimes compilation albums aren't really worth as much as the original but this one is kind of neat because it's all psychedelic stuff from the mid to late 1960s parents would have been too happy to find this under your kid's bed but the kids were loving the music back then and there's a lot of really neat songs on this album here's one you guys might have heard of the band - guess who but this is their first album I believe and it's when they were still going going is Chad Allen in the expressions that is a pretty early piece and is still in the original plastic you can see look manufacturer let's price four dollars and 79 cents special price $2 67 what a bargain especially to be dancin - shakin all over what a great song that was well I think that's it for me for records for today there's a few I've set aside for myself that kind of has special meaning to me like Lenny Breau and a couple others that people he knew or people he played with but there's gonna be a really big selection of Records to my shop I mean crazy big I still I was here all day and I didn't even get through half of it but you know I have tomorrow in the next day I'm gonna try and pace myself anyway thanks so much for watching guys hope you enjoyed today's adventures don't forget to subscribe if you haven't already and we'll see y'all soon bye for now [Music]
