Mary Sue's and Why They're The Worst!

in my last video I briefly mentioned Mary Susan Gary Stu's so what exactly is a Mary Sue according to Wikipedia a great source I know a Mary Sue is an idealized and seemingly perfect fictional character a young or low-rank person who saves the day through unrealistic abilities often this character is recognized as an author insert or wish-fulfillment the author and I use that term loosely tends to put the only character flaws as being clumsy or had a rough childhood sometimes both those characters are clumsy in 99.9% of why a novels and sometimes regular fiction - however being clumsy shouldn't be a character trait in these types of stories being clumsy ends up helping them in some way for example let's say the main character is a young female walking class she drops her books an attractive young boy how helps her pick up the books he makes a joke about how clumsy she is mentions how cute she is and boom romance these characters are so plain and unoriginal and require no thought you know to prove my point I'll make my own Mary Sue right now here's Emma's three step guide on how to make your own Mary Sue step one draw yourself as a character in the desired universe let's make a new Sailor Scout what's that can't draw don't worry just use a dress-up game no one will notice now that you've made your characters annoying looking as possible it's time to move on to step two step two name them the name should sound Japanese perfect step three a new key John's case she's silly moon's long-lost sister who grew up in an orphanage but it was also now the world's best assassin she's smart cunning sweet pretty and has every guy falling for her but she's also the chosen one whatever that means oh she's also clumsy which makes her cute and likable and therefore humanizes her a little bit and there you have it your very own Mary Sue now I notice that the three main types of Mary Sue's the overly happy one that everyone loves for some reason the email one with a sad past but it's great at everything in sley the one never tends to be a girl next door but is written in such a way without any character flaws that no one can realistically picture her as a girl next door I think it's fair to say that most of these stories are written by little girls there is nothing wrong with wanting to start writing your own stories at a young age I also understand that can be hard to create completely original characters which is why people start writing about themselves since that's the only person they truly understand but in the end your stories won't be taken seriously if it's only a self insert no one will care also if your character does haven't in flaws there's no room for them to improve in conclusion no one likes Mary Sue's no one likes a perfect person so why would someone want to read about a perfect character there needs to be room for them to improve and no one wants to read about your wish fulfillment hey guys thank you for watching this video if you like I do please give it a thumbs up and if interested please feel free to subscribe um sorry for my absence lately I've been pretty busy because I just finished up my school year and now it's summer break so I'm hoping to make videos once a week again though I may be inconsistent because I've picked up some more hours at work so you know I'm a little busy but I should have more time than I did during the school year so yeah thanks for watching and I'll talk to you guys next time bye
