pillars of christian life prayer fasting and almsgiving our readings for today attempts to answer why do we fast most of the world religions if not all require their members to fast to skip meals to refuse drinking water [Music] and to deprive the self of the basic needs as human and all these world religions put fasting a beauty to its practice for example our brothers buddhist brothers hindus and sikh they fast for self-mortification for self-purgation our muslim brothers and sisters also fast during the holy season of ramadan this is the third pillar of their faith they fast to profess that they are not slaves of their desires and passion so our muslim brothers and sisters fast for self-control our jewish brothers and sisters likewise fast as we see in the old testament [Music] jews fast for self we can read it in leviticus 16 29-30 they fast on the day of atonement as we read this is an everlasting statute to you that you should pass on the tenth day of the seventh month for this day the day of atonement is made for you to be clean secondly juice fast for personal intention in the second book of samuel we can read that david refused to eat meals so that he will plead god for the life of their child of his wife but seva so he kept a fast to ask god for something thirdly jews fast for self-expression of mourning and sadness like in the book of judith chapter 8 verse 6 cause with why we fast if we continue to read the gospel we will hear that jesus is trying to explain the new wine skins the new cloth and this is the proof that jesus redefines and wants us to change the meaning of fasting for us christians and the first reading for today proves that in verse 6 to 7 [Music] of the book of the prophet isaiah the lord asked us is this the manner of fasting that i wish this rather is the fasting that i wish setting free the oppressed breaking every yoke sharing bread with the hungry sheltering the oppressed and the homeless clothing the naked and not turning your back on your own now fasting becomes christian if it does not stay on the self fasting is christian if it is not self referential fasting becomes christian if it is not self-serving it is self-mortification self-control self-purification [Music] personal intention self-expression of sadness that is not christian we fast not for the self in verse 58 in chapter 58 verse 3 of the book of the prophet isaiah it is said [Music] you fast but you do not see we skip meals we deprive ourselves of drink of the basic needs that we have but [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign let us pray that in this eucharist we define the christian way of fasting and so we pray lord as christians as your disciples may we fast to see outside of ourselves may we fast so us to be fast in helping may we fast to feel the sufferings of others may be fast to fill in the emptiness of others may be fast to heal the wounded woundedness of others lord teach us to fast the christian way less of the self and more of the others amen let us now offer our petitions by fasting we give god space in our lives let us ask the lord to strengthen us in self-denial that we may set our minds and hearts
