so good morning brothers and sisters welcome to the celebration of the holy eucharist today march 2 2022 ashwin's day ash wednesday is a day of healing an initiative of a merciful god who sees in secret in the heart in order to be filled with this gift of healing we need to recognize our need for it we have to lay bare our weaknesses and strip our hearts of pride arrogance will never limit god's mercy but it can worsen the wounds that our sins inflict on us please all stand as we begin the celebration [Music] [Music] looks on [Music] [Music] know [Music] oh [Music] [Music] um [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the lord be with you and with your spirit sisters and brothers we begin today the season of land 40 days of preparation for easter it is a moment of grace is a it is a moment of joy 40 days of encountering god the god of mercy the god of compassion the god of forgiveness let us pray grant o lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take up battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of the prophet joel even now says the lord return to me with your whole heart with fasting and weeping and mourning rend your hearts not your garments and return to the lord your god for gracious and merciful is he slow to anger rich in kindness and relenting in punishment perhaps he will again relent and leave behind him a blessing offerings and libations for the lord your god blow the trumpet in zion proclaim fast call an assembly gather the people notify the congression assemble the elders gather the children and the infants at the breath at the breast let the bridegroom quit his room and the bride her chamber between the porch and the altar let the priests the ministers of the lord weep and say spare o lord your people and make not your heritage a re-approach reproach with the nations ruling over them why should they say among the peoples where is their god then the lord was tired to concern for his land and took pity on his people the word of the lord thanks be to god be merciful o lord for we have sinned be merciful o lord for we have sinned have mercy on me o god in your goodness in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense truly wash me from my gup and of my sin cleanse me be merciful o lord for we have sinned for i acknowledge my offense and my sin is before me always against you only have i sinned and done what is evil in your sight be merciful o lord for we have sinned a clean heart create for me o god and the steadfast spirit renew within me cast me not out from your presence and your holy spirit take not from me be merciful o lord for we have sinned give me back the joy of your salvation and the willing spirit sustained in me o lord open my lips and my mouth shall proclaim your praise be merciful o lord for we have sinned a reading from the second letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters we are ambassadors for christ as if god were appealing through us we implore you on behalf of christ be reconciled to god for our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin so that we might become the righteousness of god in him working together then we appeal to you not to receive the grace of god in vain for he says in an acceptable time i heard you and on the day of salvation i helped you behold now is a very acceptable time behold now is the day of salvation the word of the lord thanks be to god glory and praise to you lord jesus all together if today you hear his voice harden not your hearts [Music] glory and grace to you lord jesus christ the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to saint matthew glory to you o lord jesus said to his disciples take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them otherwise you will have no recompense from your heavenly father when you give alms do not blow a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others amen i say to you they have received the reward but when you give arms do not let your left hand know what your right is doing so that your arms giving may be secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you pray do not be like the hypocrites who love to attend and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them amen i say to you they have received the reward but when you pray go to your inner room close the door and pray to your father in secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you fast do not look gloomy like the hypocrites they neglect their appearance so that they may appear to others to be fasting amen i say to you they have received the reward but when you fast anoint your head and wash your face so that you may not appear to be fasting except your father who is heathen and your father who sees what is hidden will repay you the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ as ashes are imposed on our foreheads we are reminded how frail we are how weak we are how mortal we are but at the same time we notice that ashes are not simply imposed on our foreheads it is imposed on our foreheads with the sign of the cross jesus jesus is our strength jesus is our immortality peace len is a call for us to engage ourselves in pious acts we heard clearly from our gospel for today give alms pray fast and these pious acts we must be able to accomplish without pretense without duplicity without hypocrisy and it is the lord whom we allow to gaze upon us with mercy it is allowing the lord to change us to transform us [Music] learn is a call to self-denial and self-discipline we are called to be in control of our passions of our appetites of our inclinations that is why the holy father pope francis urges us on this first day of lent to really pray to really fast for peace and we are now experiencing disturbance not just in our interior life but also in our external life the war happening in ukraine it is something that should disturb us but at the same time provide us that opportunity to be with god [Music] we turn to god because we know it is only god who can bring us to our senses he is the god whose reason is believing in him whose whose hope is in his victory in his glory overcoming sin and death whose force is his impelling love to each one of us [Music] we are called to selflessness we are called to self-giving love and what beautiful way to do this and to begin this through prayer and sacrifice for peace we are a people of god and we are a people of love and with love we will show justice we will promote peace praya maginsa is a moment of grace length is a moment for us to be filled with spiritual joy nangsagayon s nigristo having begun our lenten journey we beg you heavenly father for the grace of genuine repentance and compassion with firm faith we pray you renew your life in us o lord renew your life in us o lord father help us to discard any religious displays that are insincere may we strive to cultivate a reach your prayer life centered in your word we pray we bring you your life in action father help us to be more keen to the voice of christ appealing us through the cries of the poor the hungry the despised and the lost we pray renew your life father help us to fast from the harshness and arrogance in our actions may we follow faithfully the health measures set for us so that we may be spared from the discomfort and sickness caused by kovid 19 virus we pray renew your life in us o lord father help us build bridges of faith hope love and mercy between enemies may we be free to let go of our grudges and strive for reconciliation we pray renew your life in us father through the power of jesus christ may our beloved dead enter the eternal life we pray bring you your life in us o lord let us pray for our intentions we pray renew your life in us o lord god our father our help and strength by the grace of your spirit enable us to live in greater fidelity to the gospel of reconciliation and rejoice in the peace it offers grant this through christ your son and our lord amen oh [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] pray sisters and brothers that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god our almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church as we solemnly offer the anvil sacrifice for the beginning of lent we entreat you o lord the true works of penance and charity we may turn away from harmful pleasures and plants from our sins may become worthy to celebrate devoutly the passion of your son who lives and reigns forever and ever amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we leave them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and john it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you will that our self-denial should give you thanks humble our sinful pride contribute to the feeding of the poor and so help us imitate you in your kindness and so we glorify you with countless angels as with one voice of praise we acclaim [Music] i [Music] [Music] [Music] you are indeed holy and to be glorified o god who love the human race and who always walk with us on the journey of life blessed indeed is your son present in our midst when we are gathered by his love and went as once for the disciples so now for us he opens the scriptures and breaks the bread therefore father most merciful we ask that you send forth your holy spirit to sanctify these gifts of bread and wine that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ on the day before he was to suffer on the night of the last supper he took bread and said the blessing broke the bread gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] directions [Music] therefore holy father as we celebrate the memorial of christ your son our savior whom you led through his passion and death on the cross to the glory of the resurrection and whom you have seated at your right hand we proclaim the work of your love until he comes again and we offer you the bread of life and the chalice of blessing look with favor and the oblation of your church in which we show forth the paschal sacrifice of christ that has been handed on to us and grant that by the power of the spirit of your love we may be counted now and until the day of eternity among the members of your son in whose body and blood we have communion and so having called us to your table lord confirm us in unity so that together with francis our pope and jose our bishop with all bishops priests and deacons and your entire people as we walk your ways with faith and hope we may strive to bring joy and trust into the world remember our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the peace of your christ and all the dead whose faith you alone have known admit them to rejoice in the light of your face and in the resurrection give them the fullness of life grant also to us when our earthly pilgrimage is done that we may come to an eternal dwelling place and live with you forever there in communion with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph with the apostles and martyrs and with all the saints we shall praise and exalt you through jesus christ your son through him and with him and in him o god almighty
