when he calls on me i will answer him i will deliver him and give him glory i will grant him length of days greetings my name is father sam morehead and i'm the rector of the cathedral basilica of the immaculate conception here in downtown denver and it is my joy to welcome you to this pre-recorded mass today we celebrate the first sunday of the sacred season of lent in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you and with your spirit my brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and in what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen lord have mercy lord have mercy christ have mercy christ have mercy lord have mercy lord have mercy let us pray grant almighty god through the yearly observances of holy lent that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses spoke to the people saying the priest shall receive the basket from you and shall set it in front of the altar of the lord your god then you shall declare before the lord your god my father was a wandering aramian who went down to egypt with a small household and lived there as an alien but there he became a nation great strong and numerous when the egyptians maltreated and oppressed us imposing hard labor upon us we cried to the lord the god of our fathers and he heard our cry and saw our affliction our toil and our oppression he brought us out of egypt with his strong hand and outstretched arm with terrifying power with signs and wonders and bringing us into this country he gave us this land flowing with milk and honey therefore i have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you o lord have given me and having set them before the lord your god you shall bow down in his presence the word of the lord be with me lord when i am in trouble [Music] you dwell in the shelter of the most high who abide in the shadow of the almighty say to the lord my refuge and fortress my god in whom i trust be with me lord i am in trouble no evil shall befall you nor shall affliction come near your tent [Music] for to his angels he has given command about you that they guard you in all your ways be with me lord when i am in trouble [Music] upon their hands they shall bear you up lest you dash your foot against a stone you shall tread upon the asp and the viper you shall trample down the lion and the dragon be with me lord when i am in trouble [Music] because he clings to me i will deliver him i will set him on high because he acknowledges my name he shall call upon me and i will answer him i will be with him in distress i will deliver him and glorify him be with me lord when i am in trouble [Music] a reading of the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters what does scripture say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart that is the word of faith that we preach for if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes with the heart and so is justified and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved for the scripture says no one who believes in him shall be put to shame for there is no distinction between jew and greek the same lord is lord of all enriching all who call upon him for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord thanks be to god praise to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory one does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of god [Music] praise to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit into the desert for 40 days to be tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those days and when they were over he was hungry the devil said to him if you are the son of god command this stone to become bread jesus answered him it is written one does not live on bread alone then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant the devil said to him i shall give to you all this power and glory for it has been handed over to me and i may give it to whomever i wish all this will be yours if you worship me jesus said to him in reply it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him alone shall you serve then he led him to jerusalem made him stand on the parapet of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written it will command his angels concerning you and to guard you and with their hands they will support you lest you dash your foot against the stone jesus said to him in reply it also says you shall not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time the gospel of the lord praise you lord jesus christ over 20 years ago the walt disney corporation released their blockbuster hit of the lion king i imagine many of you have seen it it's the story of simba and mufasa and it's the story of a son who has to take up the mantle of leadership from his father the father who had an untimely early death and at the key point in which the sun the lion cub become now a grown lion he has to take this up he has this voice from his father it says remember who you are it is important to remember who we are something of the whole spirit of lent pressing towards easter is this call to remember not just in our thoughts our imagination but in the depths of our being the truth of our soul who we truly are who we have been but who we are called to become ultimately in jesus christ on wednesday we celebrated ash wednesday to begin the lenten season as ashes were put upon our forehead we heard the words remember you are dust and to dust you will return this a reminder of our mortality that you and i are of the earth that were mortal that we're not god that we will not live this life forever and we are not our own master our own creator we have to remember our littleness and in humility come before our god who can make something great and wonderful of us so the first gesture of our remembrance in lent is to remember our littleness which means our sinfulness our need for god's mercy and the necessary work of conversion of repentance and being open to the greatness that god can do in and through us that means that we have to be honest about the temptations that assail us and that we have to call upon a higher power greater strength god himself to overcome the wiles of the enemy the devil and those temptations that would crop up within us the temptation was threefold the first to be tempted to rely upon material resources alone but man doesn't live by bread alone the second was to see ourselves as our own little god but we are not god and the third was to put god in a box tell him what to do but god is god and so you shall not put the lord your god to the test you and i can't fall prey to materialism we cannot fall prey to thinking we're our own god our own center of our universe and we can't even fall prey to telling god what he should do with and for us but the second great work of remembrance is this to remember that in jesus christ you and i have a future we can have a good ending to this life our humanity can be transformed you and i have to remember that god wants us for his own and to be his forever and so we have to remember that jesus christ has loved us laid down his life for us and is risen again in glory and he's communicating his love to us we have to remember that jesus is giving us every grace to make us into the saints he wants us to be so this lent we remember remember god's goodness our littleness but the greatness that we can have in christ i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen trusting in the greatness of almighty god who transforms us by his mercy and grace to him we now lift up some of our many needs and prayers we pray for our holy father pope francis and all the bishops throughout the world that they would lead us in the ways of deepening faith prayer fasting almsgiving in the sacred season of lent we pray to the lord we pray for all government and civil leaders that god would give them wisdom and insight especially we pray for the leaders of ukraine and russia we pray to the lord we pray for the peoples of every nation we pray for those in our own community that god would bring about a great work of renewal in our time we pray to the lord we pray for the poor and the suffering especially those whose lives have been upended by the crisis in ukraine and all of the many refugees of that nation for them we pray to the lord and we pray for all who have died that god will grant them rest and peace we pray to the lord almighty and eternal god we come before you we renew and profess our faith in you we ask that you would drive from our heart the spirit of temptation and any while of the evil one let us come alive all the more this lent in christ for we make these and all of our prayers through christ our lord pray brethren that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of disney for give us the right dispositions o lord we pray to make these offerings for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining forty long days from earthly food he consecrated through his fast the pattern of our lenten observance and by overturning all the snares of the ancient serpents taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating worthily the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal paschal feast and so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaim o son i in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna [Music] you are indeed holy o lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through our your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore o lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your devil lord [Music] therefore o lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs and with all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help may this sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray o lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity or pilgrim church on earth with your servant francis our pope and samuel our bishop and jorge his assistant the order of bishops all the clergy and the entire people you have gained for your own listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you in your compassion o merciful father gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world to our departed brothers and sisters and to all who are pleasing to you at their passing from this life give kind admittance to your kingdom there we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through christ our lord through whom you bestow on the world all that is good through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always [Music] god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world grant us [Music] behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed the lord will conceal you with his opinions and under his wings you will trust let us pray renewed now with heavenly bread by which faith is nourished hope increased and charity strengthened we pray o lord that we may learn to hunger for christ the true and living bread and to strive to live by every word which proceeds from your mouth through christ our lord the lord be with you bow down for the blessing may bountiful blessing o lord we pray come down upon your people that hope may grow in tribulation virtue be strengthened in temptation and eternal redemption be assured through christ our lord and may the blessing of almighty god the father and the son and the holy spirit come down on you and remain with you forever go forth the mass has ended
