ourselves to god and commit ourselves to cooperate with his grace let us pray grant o lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take up battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of the prophet joel even now says the lord return to me with your whole heart with fasting and weeping in mourning rend your hearts not your garments and return to the lord your god for gracious and merciful is he slow to anger rich in kindness and relenting in punishment perhaps he will again relent and leave behind him a blessing offerings and libations for the lord your god blow the trumpet in zion proclaim a fast call an assembly gather the people notify the congregation assemble the elders gather the children and the infants at the breast let the bridegroom quit his room and the bride her chamber between the porch and the altar let the priests the ministers of the lord reap and say spare o lord your people and make not your heritage a reproach with the nations ruling over them why should they say among the peoples where is their god then the lord was stirred to concern for his land and took pity on his people the word of the lord thanks be to god be merciful o lord for we have sinned be merciful o lord [Music] have mercy on me o god in your goodness in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse [Music] for i acknowledge my offense and my sin is before me always against you only have i sinned and done what is evil in your sight [Music] a clean heart created for me o god and a steadfast spirit when you within me cast me not ought from your presence and your holy spirit take not from me [Music] give me back the joy of your salvation and the willing spirit sustain in me o lord open my lips and my mouth shall proclaim your praise [Music] a reading from the second letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters we are ambassadors for christ as if god were appealing through us we implore you on behalf of christ be reconciled to god for our sake he made him to be seen who did not know sin so that we might become the righteousness of god in him working together then we appeal to you not to receive the grace of god in vain for he says in an acceptable time i heard you and on the day of salvation i helped you behold now is a very acceptable time behold now is the day of salvation the word of the lord thanks be to god glory and praise to you lord jesus christ all together if today you hear his voice harden not your hearts glory and praise [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to saint matthew glory to you o lord jesus said to his disciples take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them otherwise you will have no recompense from your heavenly father when you give alms do not blow a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others amen i say to you they have received the reward but when you give alms do not let your left hand know what your right is doing so that your arms giving may be secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you pray do not be like the hypocrites who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them amen i say to you they have received the reward but when you pray go to your inner room close the door and pray to your father in secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you fast do not look gloomy like the hypocrites they neglect their appearance so that they may appear to others to be fasting amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you fast anoint your head and wash your face so that you may not appear to be fasting except your father who is heathen and your father who sees what is hidden will repay you the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ we begin the season of land with ash wednesday later in this mass ashes will be imposed on our foreheads this reminds us that as human beings we are frail we are weak we are mortal but when ashes are imposed on our forehead this is done by signing the cross [Music] sisters and brothers lent is an opportune occasion for us to encounter and experience god we allow god to reveal himself to us to make us feel to make us experience his mercy his compassion his forgiveness christmas forgives us christ heals us christ renews us because we are assured that we are a people saved by god we are a people loved by god we are a people saved by god sisters and brothers in today's gospel we are again introduced to the pious acts that we must engage ourselves into in this season of land arms giving penance and prayer and these we ought to do without pretense without duplicity without hypocrisy the basis of our action must be our faith in jesus the force should always be the love of god for us the hope is the promise of god for us to have life and to share with him eternal joy eternal glory was we confirm and we express that without christ our life will truly be meaningless our life will truly be fruitless as we find ourselves gathered anew in worship of the god who loves us who saves us who protects us we must allow him really to immerse us in his love so that through the same love we may be able to care we may be able to respect we may be able to serve one another [Music] we must never grow tired we must not grow weary doing good we must not grow tired we must not grow weary avoiding evil evil in our thoughts evil in our words evil in our actions and we need really to do this we need to commit ourselves to conversion we need to commit ourselves to an offering of our life we must really commit ourselves to reparation tells us about the need for us to have a change of heart to allow god to make this heart a heart that throbs with love with selfless and self-giving love it is not to be a heart that is self-seeking a heart that is indifferent today the holy father pope francis urged us to make this day truly a day of prayer and fasting for peace because we know what is happening to ukraine our brother and sister ukrainians they are hungry and thirsty for peace their life is threatened their security their comfort their safety at alamnatin hasan we need to be agents of peace we need to be promoters of peace and these we can achieve if we truly reconcile ourselves to god reconcile ourselves to one another cases and so sisters and brothers as we heard from the gospel today we must be true we must be just we must have hearts that are true and just we should read ourselves of any pretension of any duplicity on having begun our lenten journey we beg you o heavenly father for the grace of genuine repentance and compassion with firm faith we pray renew your life in us o lord renew your life in us oh lord father help us to discard any religious displays that are in sincere may we strive to cultivate a richer prayer life centered in your word we pray review your life in us father help us to be more keen to the voice of christ appealing to us through the cries of the poor the hungry the despised and the lost we pray renew your life in us o lord father help us to fast from the harness and arrogance in our actions may we follow faithfully the help measures set for us so that we may be spared from the discomfort and sickness caused by covet 19 virus we pray renew your life in us father help us build bridges of faith hope love and mercy between enemies may we be free to let go our grudges and strive for reconciliation we pray remember your life in us o lord father through the power of jesus cross may our beloved dead entered eternal life we pray renew your entire life in us let us now pray for our intentions and for all these intentions we pray remember your life in us loving and gracious father our help and strength by the grace of your spirit enable us to live in greater fidelity to the gospel of reconciliation and rejoice in the peace it offers grant this through christ your son and our lord amen amen [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you will that our self-denial should give you thanks humble our sinful pride contribute to the feeding of the poor and so help us imitate you in your kindness and so we glorify you with countless angels as with one voice of praise we acclaim [Music] me [Music] foreign [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore this gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the jewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and jose our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them throughout the ages we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say [Music] um [Music] mother [Music] foreign [Music] deliver us
