who suffered and died and was raised from the dead for our salvation a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters what does scripture say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart that is the word of faith that we preach for if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes with a heart and soul is justified and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved for the scripture says no one who believes in him will be put to shame for there is no distinction he led him to jerusalem made him stand on the parapet of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god threw yourself down from here for it is written he will command his angels concerning you to guard you and with their hands they will support you last you dust your foot against a stone jesus said to him in reply it also says you shall not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ if i may ask you sisters and brothers when was the last temptation you had in your life was there any that you still can remember let me first clarify that temptation is different when we give in to temptation it is when we give in that we sing but the very nature of temptation has actually a formative element temptations can actually help us clarify the values we hold dear in our life it can strengthen our faith it can empower us to be the best person we can be so they we have that demarcation line when we talk about simple temptation and giving in to temptations and i know we all have those moments maybe not like the one of jesus but essentially it might reflect that of jesus temptation every first sunday of land we hear the three temptations of jesus which is actually very basic to human inclinations to have food if you've been hungry for the last 40 days hudu would say i do not want power or who would say i hate fame you know the world would offer this to us for this evening's reflection i would like to focus on what are the characteristics of the action of the devil so we may be aware when we discover ourselves in that same situation first the devil is a liar the devil is a liar all that he claimed in the story were not his because everything belongs to god so he was lying and then we know that if it is from god it will always bring the truth to us and this is what jesus said the truth will set us free secondly we also have to be very careful that whatever the devil will do to us it is always a trap it might appear very listening to our eyes very comforting that we cannot say no but it's trapped the moment we give in to it it will be difficult to get out from it jesus said it is the truth that will set us free meaning if it is god's action it will always be empowering it will always be liberating it will always be praying but if it is the devil's action we will end up slaves though sometimes it's already late for us to realize second third jesus in telling his disciple he was not only telling the truth he was also straightforward no promises if you want to follow me this is what going to happen to you you will even die on the cross but the devil's action would offer something that we might enjoy in the beginning but that promise are bound to be broken there are many others but what i am going to tell you sisters and brothers is simple we find sometimes ourselves being tempted will and good it may bring something good to us but the hardest part is when we are the one carrying the work of the devil that becomes a serious problem so we have to be very keen in terms of analyzing what is happening to me what is happening around me what is going on of course if boga we go back to the gospel jesus has a solution jesus will offer us something so we can go beyond or we can be victorious in times of temptations very graphic in three occasions the response of jesus was to go back to the words of the father i'm pointing this out because most often than not we trust our own capacity we trust our own abilities and god becomes the last recourse when things got too complicated when we are pushed to the wall it is only then that we will call god but in this story jesus was so familiar that he would always counter the claims of the devil by returning or referring back to the words of god this is the way of jesus and hopefully sisters and brothers this can also be our way now this is our assignment this may be one of our lenten sacrifice but hopefully not i would like to appeal to you brothers and sisters that among the many things we want to do for lent following the spirit of today's gospel let us spend time reading the sacred scripture so that we can familiarize ourselves the words of god that when we have to face temptations in life there is something that we can refer to go back find strength even courage to face satan a pipe minute everyday hopefully for 40 days we will never be the same when we interact every day with the gospel of jesus it's not just an activity that we will be more familiar of the sacred scriptures it is also by way of immersing ourselves into the heart and mind of god this is an opportunity this is an occasion for us to journey with jesus to the gospel he preached we now together profess our faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us man and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world come amen heavenly father renew us in your covenant of mercy that leads to everlasting life with humble hearts we pray lord graciously hear us may the church leaders find strength in the cries of the desert whenever they are tempted to live a life against the gospel we pray lord graciously hear us may the civil leaders be empowered by your love o lord so that they may use material and spiritual gifts for the common good we pray lord graciously hear us as we go through this pandemic may we courageously witness to jesus christ through faith inspired works of peace justice love and compassion we pray lord graciously hear us may those who are preparing for baptism and reception into the catholic church be guided by the spirit of wisdom and peace we pray lord graciously hear us may those who called upon your name in faith o father during their earthly journey hear the voice of christ welcoming them into the joy of heaven we pray lord graciously hear us let us pray for the urgent concerns of our community and our personal intentions we pray lord graciously hear us father to the spirit you led jesus into the desert to prepare him for his mission of mercy lead us to the same spirit during this
