and of the holy spirit amen the lord be with you and with your spirit my brothers and sisters the temptation of jesus in the desert is a great reminder the temptations in our lives can be overcome if we go to jesus and choose to remain with him today is the first sunday of lent jesus's cross portrays very well the sacrifices and fortitude many of us is experiencing as one family let us pray for each other's temptations and sufferings that we may remain faithful as we strive to become channels of god's grace in jesus brothers and sisters let us now acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i've greatly seen in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and in what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary very virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to life everlasting amen lord have mercy lord have mercy christ the mercy christ have mercy lord have mercy lord have mercy let us pray grant almighty god through the yearly observances of holy lands that we may grow in understanding of the riches here and in christ and by worthy conduct pursue that effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen offering to god the fruits of the land in thanksgiving the israelites profess publicly the saving acts god has done on their behalf lent is the time to recall the lord jesus suffering on our behalf a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses spoke to the people saying the priest shall receive the basket from you and shall set it in front of the altar of the lord your god then you shall declare before the lord your god my father was a wandering aramian who went down to egypt with a small household and lived there as an alien but there he became a nation great strong and numerous when the egyptians maltreated and oppressed us imposing hard labor upon us we cried to the lord the god of our fathers and he heard our cry and saw our affliction our toil and our oppression he brought us out of egypt with his strong hand an outstretched arm with terrifying power with signs and wonders and bringing us into this country he gave us this land flowing with milk and honey therefore i have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you o lord have given me and having set them before the lord your god you shall bow down in his presence the word of the lord thanks be to god be with me lord when i am in trouble be with me lord when i am troubled you who dwell in the shelter of the most high who abide in the shadow of the almighty say to the lord my refuge and fortress my god in whom i trust be with me lord when i am in trouble no evil shall befall you nor shall affliction come near your tent for to his angels he has given command about you that they guard you in all your ways be with me lord when i am trouble upon their hands they shall bear you up lest you dash your foot against a stone you shall twered upon the asp and the viper you shall trample down the lion and the dragon be with me lord when i am in trouble because it clings to me i will deliver him i will set him on high because he acknowledges my name he shall call upon me and i will answer him i will be with him in distress i will deliver him and glorify him be with me lord when i am in trouble the apostle paul exhorts us to place our faith and confidence in the lord jesus who suffered and died and was raised from the dead for our salvation a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters what the scriptures say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart that is the word of faith that we preach for if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes with the heart and soul is justified and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved for the scripture says no one who believes in him will be put to shame for there is no distinction between jew and greek the same lord is lord of all enriching all who call upon him for everyone who calls on the lord on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord thanks be to god to honor the gospel please rise [Music] one does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of god [Applause] [Music] jesus christ [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to saint luke glory to you o lord filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit into the desert for 40 days to be tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those days and when they were over he was hungry the devil said to him if you are the son of god command this stone to become bread jesus answered him it is written one does not live on bread alone then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant the devil said to him i shall give you all this power and glory for it has been handed over to me and i may give it to whoever i wish all this will be yours if you worship me jesus said to him in reply it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him alone you shall serve then he led him to jerusalem made him stand on the parapet of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written he will command his angels concerning you to guard you and with their hands they will support you lest you dash your foot against a stone jesus said to him in reply it also says you shall not put the lord your god to the tests when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time my brothers and sisters the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ my dear brothers and sisters a temptation no matter how strong persistent and recurring is not a sin when we are tempted we are not yet committing sins but a temptation is an inducement an enticement to sin it can lead us to sin or sins if we entertain it if we expose ourselves unnecessary to it and if we succumb to it temptation can be compared to the devil knocking at the door and sinning is opening the door and allowing the devil to enter although god may allow temptations temptations can never come from god god can never and will never tempt us he will never lead us to commit sins so temptations come from the devil they come from our weak and sinful selves they can come from others and from the world biblical scholars tell us that jesus is actually faced with one main and root temptation the devil's attack on his identity as the son of god jesus's main temptation is to doubt to prove and to forsake his identity as the son of god we take note that the devil tells jesus twice if you are the son of god command this is stone to become branch if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here we recall my brothers and sisters when jesus was baptized at the river jordan his identity was already revealed by his heavenly father this is my beloved son and at the transfiguration on mount tabor this identity was confirmed by the heavenly father because jesus once again heard the voice of the heavenly father this is my beloved son and so fundamentally this is what is being attacked by the devil if you are the son of god satan entices jesus to doubt and even to prove his identity that he already received and that was confirmed my brothers and sisters this is what happens to us when we are confronted with temptations and sinfulness temptations entice us to be unfaithful to our identity as beloved children of god that we already receive at baptism we are not children of the devil we are not children of this world we are children of god and so we must live accordingly my brothers and sisters and when we sin we are actually betraying this identity because instead of reaffirming that we only have got one god whom we only should worship then we can have other gods we can have money power pleasure and many other things to be gods substituting the only one god that we should have and so we can understand the particular temptations of jesus in this light my brothers and sisters the devil is in effect saying to jesus why sacrifice why fasts turn the stone into bread take the pleasure of feeling yourself you see all these wealths and properties that belong to me they will be yours if you only worship me show your magnificent power by falling from the parapet without getting hurt use your power and show me that you are really the son of god the temptations of pleasure wealth and power my brothers and sisters wealth pleasure and power are temptations but they can become sins we can succumb to bless yours by being obsessed with food drink sex clothes and gadgets we can be slaves to different forms of pressure and we can seek it and so become slaves instead of being children and three children of our heavenly father wealth can lead us to sin when we still engage in corruption do not give proper wages to our workers for the sake of profit and grades power can lead to sin when we cheat lie manipulate spread lies and fake news use trolls in order to control the minds of people so that we can be in power and we can remain in power power is sinful when we use oppression violence and murder to control and destroy people just like what is happening now in the war in ukraine we are seeing what one person can do so much evil and pains to so many people and a great threat to the world worlds these are the works of the devil my brothers and sisters and those who succumb to this succumb to the traps of the devil but jesus was victorious over the attacks and temptations of the devil and we can also victorious if we learn from jesus jesus is able to resist the temptations of the devil because he is filled with and led by the holy spirit we see that from the very beginning of the gospel he is in deep communion with a heavenly father and is truly grounded in god and in his words and is equipped with prayer and fasting instead of succumbing to the lies of the devil he clings to god and to the words of god found in the scriptures we take notes my brothers and sisters for every assault of the devil jesus responds with the word of god because he is guided by the word of god and he is also strengthened by prayer and fasting to face the devil and smack nations jesus victory over temptations and sins reminds us that sinfulness and temptations can never be overcome by our own strengths we cannot do it by ourselves my brothers and sisters we are weak only by the power of god in jesus made possible by the holy spirit that we can become spiritually strong only by having a deep and personal relationship with god by our being formed by an obedient to the word of god by intense prayer fasting almsgiving and by our recourse to other spiritual means like the eucharist and the sacrament of reconciliation can we defeat sin temptations and the devil we cannot triumph just on our own strengths it must be by the power of god the other readings for the first sunday of lent give us inspiration and encouragement the psalmist says my refuge and fortress my god in whom i trust the first reading from the book of deuteronomy promises that the lord hears our cry and sees our afflictions our toil and oppression we can come to him for help saint paul in his letter to the romans promises everyone who calls the name of the lord will be saved bishop leonidas lent homeland an american made this prelate who founded the homeland university one when in trouble kneel down and ask god's help but never climb over the fence into the devil's ground and then kneel down and ask for help pray from god's side of defense meaning to say don't expose ourselves to unnecessary temptations and sins i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and death of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light through god from true god begotten and made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right and of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken with the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen heavenly father renew us in your covenant of mercy that leads us to everlasting life with by overcoming all the snares of the ancient serpents taught us to cast out the leaving of malice so that celebrating worthily the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal paschal holiness make holy there for these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the jew fall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was send that he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which shall be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith when we eat when we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim your death o lord until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and ministered to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be guarded into one by
