[Music] um lord who throughout these forty days for us to fast and pray teach us to mourn our sins and close by thee to stay as thou white satan's disconnect and dislike victory wind oh give us strengthen thee to fight in thee to conquer sin as thou thist hunger bear and thirst so teach us gracious lord to die for seven chiefly live by thy most holy word and though these days of penitent and though thy passion tight ever more in life and death jesus with us abide abide with us and so this life of suffering over past an easter of unending joy we may attain at last in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit and good morning to you all on this ash wednesday morning as we begin this great season of lent i welcome you and i welcome all who join us virtually via our parish radio facebook live webcam and shalom world we gather at the beginning of this time of lent and in the readings today we hear the call of lent in the first reading come back to me with all your hearts for i am all tenderness and compassion and in the gospel we have the hallmarks of lent prayer fasting and almsgiving falchus biscielte baltimore good day nabookalyagus nicolini on girl sculpt fort lisa rangato agus rangaku boys and girls who are preparing for first penance and first holy communion later in the year and the boys and girls who are in the final stage of preparation for the sacrament of confirmation which they will receive on saturday and so we prepare ourselves now and we have to remember today as well what pope francis asked us that we would treat today as a day of fasting and prayer for the ukraine we think of the many families and women and children and men who are suffering greatly those who have lost their lives those who are suffering at this time we ask almighty god to be with them as we prepare ourselves to celebrate this mass by remembering our own sinfulness as i confess to almighty god and you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and what i failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary of a virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen lord have mercy lord have mercy christ have mercy christ of mercy lord have mercy lord have mercy grant o lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take up battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen the first reading a reading from the prophet joel now now it is the lord who speaks come back to me with all your heart fasting weeping mourning let your hearts be broken not your garments torn turn to the lord your god again for he is all tenderness and compassion slow to anger rich in graciousness and ready to relent who knows if he will not turn again will not relent will not leave a blessing as he passes oblation and libation for the lord your god sound a trumpet in zion order a fast proclaim a solemn assembly called the people together somebody summoned the community assembled the elders gathered the children even the infants at the breast let the bridegroom leave his bedroom and the bride her alcove between vestibule and altar let the priests the ministers of the lord lament let him say spare your people lord do not make your heritage a thing of shame a byword for the nations why should it be said among the nations where is their god then the lord jealous on behalf of his land took pity on his people the word of the lord that is better a sponsorial psalm [Music] one was o lord for we have seen have mercy on me god in your kindness your compassion blot out my offense o wash me more and more from my ears cleanse me from my sins on us o lord for we have sinned my offense is my sin is always before me against you alone i have sinned what is evil in your sight i have done [Music] [Music] up your heart creed for me spirit within me do not cast me away from your presence nor drive me of your holy spirit have mercy on us o lord for we have sinned give me again the joy of your help with the spirit and fervor sustain me o lord open my lips and my mouth shall declare your praise of mercy on us o lord for we have seen the second reading a reading from the second letter of saint paul to the corinthians we are ambassadors for christ it is as though god were appealing through us and the appeal that we make in christ's name is be reconciled to god for our sake god made a sinless one into sin so that in him we might become the goodness of god as his fellow workers we beg you once again not to neglect the grace of god that you have received for he says at the favorable time i have listened to you on the day of salvation i came to your help well now is the favorable time this is the day of salvation the word of the lord thanks be to god gospel acclamation praise to you lord jesus king of christ glory a pure heart create for me o god and give me again the joy of your help praise to you o christ king of eternal glory praise to you lord jesus christ king of eternal glory and the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew gloria jesus said to his disciples be careful not to parade your good deeds before people to attract their notice by doing this you will lose all rewards from your father in heaven so when you give alms do not have it trumpeted before you this is what the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win people's admiration i tell you solemnly they have had their reward but when you give arms your left hand must not know what your right hand is doing your arms giving must be in secret and your father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you and when you pray do not imitate the hypocrites they love to say their prayers standing up in the synagogues and at street corners for people to see them i tell you solemnly they have had their reward but when you pray go to your private room and when you have shut your door pray to your father who is in that secret place and your father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you when you fast do not put on a gloomy look as the hypocrites do they pull long faces to let people know they are fasting i tell you solemnly they have had their reward but when you fast put oil on your head and wash your face so that no one will know you are fasting except your father who sees all that is done in secret and your father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you this is the good news of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ and that gospel really outlines the very three distinctive aspects of our lent our lenten journey prayer fasting and arms giving as we begin this lent i think we're all very conscious of the dark clouds that hang over the world the awful situation in ukraine so much innocent suffering families torn apart people being blown to death huge millions of people now on the move to safety it's a terrible stain on our world and i think we all feel very helpless what can we do well pope francis asked us to do something today and that is that we would combine our fasting and our prayers for the people of ukraine and i'm sure we will get opportunities to assist those people over the coming days and weeks the parish is preparing to welcome a family who are fleeing at this moment from ukraine hoping to get into poland and from poland to come to ireland a mother and three daughters one of her daughters a fourth daughter lives here in our parish so hopefully by the weekend they will have been united here in portlesia and as i said the parish are assisting in accommodating and welcoming them and i'm sure we welcome them on behalf of our whole community it's a humanitarian disaster which we need to respond to and so this lent not only today but let us combine those three aspects of prayer fasting and almsgiving and ask almighty god to be with those people who are suffering and ask almighty god to touch the hearts of the men of violence and evil that we might be able to find a way of peace lent we gather in great numbers this morning with a great numbers here at the half seven morning mass and we have wonderful i haven't seen a congregation of this size in this church since before the pandemic and it's wonderful to see and we come together and we will be marked by the sign of the cross on our forehead with the blessed ashes and we know that there's no magic in the ashes but they are a symbol and a strong symbol and a sign that we are followers of jesus christ that the cross on our forehead unites us with his cross and equally that it marks that we have begun a time of prayer fasting and almsgiving and you know we could associate this as a dour time when we give up things and when we have to impose some discipline on ourselves but really it's a time of a time of great joy and that call of lent in the first reading come back to me with all your hearts for i am all tenderness and compassion now we might not have been far away but we can always come back more and more to discover almighty god who is all tenderness and compassion and that we can revel ourselves in that tender love and compassion that he gives to me but equally that i am challenged then to show that tenderness and compassion to each other and particularly we're called to show that tenderness and compassion to those who are most in need we pray for the grace of this lent we pray that we indeed may be able to enter wholeheartedly into this time of prayer fasting and almsgiving and i'm now going to bless the ashes and the general distribution of ashes will take place at the end of mass dear brothers and sisters let us humbly ask god our father that he be pleased to bless with the abundance of his grace these ashes which we will put on the heads on our heads in penitence o god who are moved by acts of humility and respond with forgiveness to works of penance lend your merciful ear to our prayers and in your kindness pour out the grace of your blessing on your servants who are marked with these ashes that as they follow the lenten observance they may be worthy to come with minds made pure to celebrate the paschal mystery of your son through christ our lord father nick turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel away from sin and embrace the good news of the gospel amen and as i said the general distribution will be at the end of mass and we come before almighty god now in prayer of the prayers of the faithful signed with the cross of ash we turn to god in prayer we pray for it we pray for each one of us that we may find that secret place where during this season of lent we can be alone with god in prayer lord hear us lord graciously hear us we pray that our fasting and other lenten penances release us from earthly desires and make us more intent on goodness justice and mercy lord hear us lord graciously hear us as war rages in the ukraine pope francis has asked us to pray for peace we ask our god who is the god of peace and not of war who is the father of all not just of some who wants us to be brothers and sisters and not enemies to lead us in the way of peace lord hear us lord graciously hear us we pray for all those who join us this morning virtually may you continue to know the presence of god alive and active in your hearts and in your homes lord hear us lord graciously hear us we take a few moments as we begin this time of lent to make our own particular prayer lord hear solemnly offer the annual sacrifice for the beginning of lent we entreat you oh lord that through works of penance and charity we may turn away from harmful pleasures and cleanse from our sins may become worthy to celebrate devoutly the passion of your son who lives and reigns forever and ever amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god far through bodily fasting you restrain our faults raise up our minds and bestow both virtue and its rewards through christ our lord through him the angels praise your majesty dominions adore and powers tremble before you heaven and the virtues of heaven and the blessed seraphim worship together with exaltation may our voices we pray join with theirs in humble praise as we acclaim [Music] [Applause] [Music] heaven and earth are full [Music] blessed is he who comes in the name of the [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the jew fall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] glory and praise to you lord jesus christ glory and praise to you lord jesus christ therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of love together with francis our pope and then as our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages that we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] and we are united as members of the family of god brothers and sisters in jesus christ and so we can pray as he taught us our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our day that by the help of your mercy we may be always
