Link to the Past + Super Metroid Combo Randomizer by Andy and Ivan in 2:53:57 SGDQ2019

[Applause] how's it going everybody good how's it going Patti what all right that's what I thought all right I'm Andy I'm Ivan and we're gonna be doing a Super Metroid Link to the Past combo randomizer we are doing it cooperatively both of us are playing the exact same seat we're gonna split stuff up so that we can do it more quickly you'll you'll get a little more of the gist of it as we get into it I'm ready when you are yeah countdown all right three two one go [Applause] I start out the bat you always start on the Super Metroid ship Ivan's gonna go into a Link to the Past right off the bat through the first portal mmm as I hit that door that's good the door to you I'm gonna stay in Super Metroid and check these two checks down here have fun thanks can't wait for you guys to come back down here later whoa what just happened that's a great question Patti so there are four doors in each of the games that lead to the other game and they're predetermined they are always the same and so that is the first one that's available it goes from Super Metroid to link to the past the other four well I'm sure we'll see you later they can even factor in to the routing of the seed so Andy's going into retro brinstar here and going to check these two items just to make sure that they're not anything important and there's a pretty predetermined route at the beginning that that they go to check uncle these two locations here and the routing can really just change on the fly depending on what items they get they could get Super Metroid items it's good you see Andy's got a boomerang in the ceiling there so he doesn't need that so he's able to reset this take that takes him back to the ship so he can go to link to the past so he taking links fast by the way so let me ask people this question sure those wondering at home what even is a randomizer because we kind of just jumped right into it and there are a lot of people out there thinking I don't know what the heck is going on that's what you're here for well that's what I thought you had that know I'm explaining things absolutely I'm the one that asked I teacher how do you do this math problem well you explain it [Laughter] ridiculous luckily I'm a genius so I can tell you randomizers basically take all of the items in a game or whatever items you specify and whatever program you use to randomize the game shuffles them all up and you can find them pretty much anywhere it makes the game kind of like a new puzzle every time almost like a rogue light where every time you play the game and do a new randomizer all the items are shuffled up and you have to go a different way and find different items to unlock different pathways and then you smush two games together like a Link to the Past and Super Metroid shuffle up all the items from both games and then you got yourself a heck of a just that's it it's a good time in most areas a good time yeah and so can these items just be anywhere or like what happens if I need the bow to get the bow you can't softlock yourself you dummy hey hey [Applause] [Music] now so that was that was the main pearl that is one of the pieces to dark world access and one of the more important items did to find that I related to your one in three of both hearts by the way okay yeah so there are words that was a red cane oh that's bad so that means that the boots are required Pegasus boots are required and that can be found now like soon or it can be in an hour we don't know hopefully it soon because boots will make that make it a little more interesting to play it's a better movement bombo's wears renamed what I've been told by some people that you can't speedrun a randomizer what are your thoughts on this one I want to hear from you this is a speedrun I don't know yeah that's absolutely true you can't you cannot you cannot now are you telling me there's no leaderboard for something that's different every time I know as crazy as that sounds yes Wow yeah but you get so race doesn't have a good time no no there's no leaderboard there's no point [Music] how am I supposed to speedrun if I can't even get a world record that's a good way to think about it healthy exactly.you you heard so if you want a free world record I'm just gonna for an demise your games now just fire one up yep you can play points I was shovel alright I just just add my blinds house don't even bother so oh so so so please how you doing I'm doing wonderful now I bet you want oh yeah you feel this merchant has a very terrible business plan if you give me $100 deal feel feel feel it thanks Howie what were you gonna say you said so so I was gonna talk about kind of where the randomizer came from this Kombat randomizer so total is the is the guy that came up with the kind of idea he it started out as a joke really like what if we combine these things and so he kind of ran with it a little bit and he did some research on it to see if it was even possible and there are actually a few factors that make it possible and this is straight from him himself so the two games the ROM layout doesn't overlap in the memory banks of the ROM so they are able to the link to past uses like the lower memory banks as the Andy finds a sword here you might want to get that handy yeah did you pick up your mood pearl No that's fine I don't need it right now so lengthy pass uses early memory banks Super Metroid uses the later ones so that allows for larger ROM sizes I can come behind this into one game to be played like they're playing on an sp2 stressed right now so actually able to play this on console which is really good and then but when they're switching between games they use pre-made savestates that are put into the ROM and they load that as well as the save RAM on top of it - allowing games and maintaining the items and he just wanted to make sure to say like thanks to both the link to the past randomizer and Super Metroid randomizer communities for like helping him program this and just kind of troubleshooting issues so it's get a round of applause for both those communities hey Ivan oh cool I was holding a pension I have a terrible time for her name alone cave yes he does disaster [Music] he's been raking your ankles clean off got three more tries long have we awaited Ivan got debated so you may be wondering if you're watching what the heck is all this stuff in the middle of my screen and why is it taking up so much or because those are all the key items bosses collectibles necessary to beat both games which is the objective of this randomizer so basically everything you're seeing there is either used to progress through the game or used to unlock more items or different out-of-the-way kind of areas so yeah they have to be both games or just can they can they be one game no they gotta be both of those games okay grabs due to Hartley's though he's trying to avoid them but I've heard running out of hearts is bad in this game yeah generally not as bad as a Super Metroid though if you don't imagine you die for real yeah but you do lose a lot of progress [Music] got a bottle okay so far I got a second blue guard chest that could be bad yeah sorry I mean there's only at this for one fight it's not gonna be more fall I promise I'm gonna go to Eastern okay Oh something else to note these two jokers are playing the exact same speed it's the same randomization so you might hear them talking about where to go where they've been what's where this is an erase they're not trying to beat each other this is actually two people sharing information while exploring separate parts of the game in order to complete the same it's called a seed which is basically an instance of randomizer to complete the feed as fast as possible and you pick this up it's often yeah that's your fault I hope it is the longer it takes you to beat this the more I get to talk you see that I even talked this fast roller there get some information on where the green pendant was it's an ice palace so ice house is not technically required at this point but it may have items or to ask for let me have the item or could be on the master sword pedestal Ursula [Music] martial art rock star sofia is power bombs in the back of a solution okay i don't know what was in dark ross okay as the lights weren't on yeah that's that's something to note in endure crimson link to the past there are some items that won't actually show up when you pull them out of chests so it could have been something like the speed booster which is that's happened before and you just start running real fast we won't know [Applause] and you can skip ice rod cave okay I'm gonna go get the glove go down the mountain go to death help my lab the rest of this plumb boats I'm a big bloke [Music] so tell us fellas where do you think you're headed next Death Mountain we just talked about it and we did yeah you do you listen Patrick what unbelievable they can share information so when antion heads to Death Mountain you'll actually be doing they told you how to walk in the dark I have three hearts okay yeah me too and him doing in the dark won't be really a problem for him but anyway I don't what we consider out of logic because the game assumes by the time you go through that go through that home I need to like almost eat the microphone okay by the time you go through this dark like this room that Ivan's going to also assume that you have the lamp so we're kind of like checking things before and it opposed to but this instance isn't really too bad it won't be like super confusing later on did you get your sword nope that's like your fault I have a hook shot I can see dink dink dink now see ya dork if they're actually playing there's two difficulties for the SMG 3 randomizer they're playing on the normal difficulty so that only affects Super Metroid logic all this I'm gonna wait for one is that a big key this could be a problem yeah this is a big key there's hardening on my body I know okay okay that's fine it's fine just use the stairs okay oh all right well I'm gonna leave well that's unfortunate we're gonna come back to that way there was nothing it's probably nothing it's because you meant I'm in the wrong place yeah you're meant to be here and you get to it you get to do the back of escape since you messed up yeah it's really nothing to do in Super Metroid since and ER I already checked the two items that they're able to check at the beginning they're gonna need either more fall they're gonna need screw attack speed booster something like that to get really anywhere in Super Metroid hey there's your bottle yeah so that opened up a whole lot getting gonna be able to go to dark world now moon pearl and the Titans mint damn if i randomizers fun going to the second half of the game before even completing the single dungeon will be honest with you i thought everyone was saying no Oh mr. sorry God I'm gonna buy bombs first what a crazy world Hyrule is child walks into a shop hey kid want some bombs just 50 rupees make sure you blow up all the walls in our town or here's a heart or a giant bottle of Medicine somehow the bombs are cheaper than the medicine this medicine will restore your magic sounds like we checked which dungeons are crystals yet how I do that right now yeah these sounds of crystals is amazing yep it's never it's so rare these sounds very very easy comparatively very quick lots of item checks and when it's a crystal that means that it's one of the seven dungeons that you have to be in order to get to Ganon's tower and then fight Ganon at the end of the game there was also a couple of red crystals on the map which isn't normally I like that in the vanilla game and those two crystals just because all the crystals and stuff are randomized it means that you do have to get the crystals 5 and 6 which are the red ones to go to the pyramid fairy using the large pink bomb and the bomb shop yeah so it's like a couple checks for free that you can kind of prioritize dungeons that way same thing goes for the green pendant get that nice Sahasra item as well whoo Mike Jones no I telling each other we're like health and stuff is so we end up just going through the games with no hearts whatsoever at least put a lot of fun later or not we die a lot come on death work yeah I can put you into some pretty sticky situations as far as health goes even in Super Metroid if you don't have a lot of heat tanks but there are a lot of II tanks spread throughout both games there's actually 316 items that are randomized in in the combo so water tape how's it going I'm I'm gonna die properly [Music] we're all gonna die one day I mean going into dark role dungeons with green male and three hearts is uh ideal this is tough my heart is under not world dungeon I'm sorry not sorry and uh I'm gonna go listen to Hawthorne hide a little hook shot clip there to avoid going around in they do normal logic seeds it can actually be quite a non a convoluted process to find progression where if they do hard mode they may be able to get those super metroid items out of our you know in and it's worth noting that magus does not get named until much later in the run if you're a late one go for there you go not only that but like Jay Hobbs has said earlier we are at a record pace for
