Learn to Color Grade Fast in Final Cut Pro 2021

hi guys i'm nick griffiths welcome to the channel this is pro editing today i'm going to be showing you how to create a cinematic piece with no color grading experience whatsoever hi guys so what i've done i've created a timeline of shots we have on the timeline here with some music and some sound effects and what we want to do we want to color grade it but color grading can get quite complicated if you don't know how to grade you've got you know you can get easily lost making shots look bad so this is where this simple technique comes in the first thing we're going to do if we quickly have a look at these shots there's varying colors and contrasts obviously that's a lot darker this one's a lot bluer first thing we're going to do we're going to balance the color now not a lot of people know about this in final cut pro especially if you're a beginner what you can do you can highlight by clicking dragging on all of the clips if you then come up to the modify window and click balance color it's going to create a look across all of the clips to make them match each other so that's a really great starting point and then all we've got to do is apply a lot to give it a look lots i'm not going to go into a lot of detail here but lut stands for lookup table it gives a specific color range a different color range and luts were made primarily to create a look from a camera's log file so a camera would shoot with the highest dynamic range that it could to capture as much detail as possible in its recorded information and then the lut would make it look how we would want it to see what has happened recently is luts have been used as preset files to create a look like i said i'm not going to go into luts a lot here have a look online find a lot that you like the look of and then you can stick it on your computer and then we can use it on our sequence what we're going to do we're going to put an adjustment layer on the sequence if you haven't already looked at it check out my adjustment layers tutorial download it and pop them on come up to our titles here and we can click adjustment and we can put our lut layer on the timeline like that then drag that out to the length of the sequence so we click on our lut layer then if we come over to our effects go to color custom lut and drag that onto the sequence onto the lut layer and then up here in our effects inspector we get this here this is where you'll navigate to where you've saved the light you've downloaded so i've got a couple here that i've already used and this one's quite nice so i put that on and if you see that's giving it this nice warm effect you can obviously change a lot to uh any other ones that you like this one's giving it really blue personally i think with snow cameras over compensate for blue when you shoot on snow so i think giving it a nice warm feel will make it look more cinematic so then that's our lut so let's have a look how about that minutes it's taken to grade that footage strictly speaking we've made no color grading in that we've used final cut pro's built-in balance color which is a great tool and it's a great starting place to then go in and do further grading you could obviously do that highlight balance color and then go into your color wheels and affect each clip and grade it however you want it obviously that's more time consuming this is a really fast simple way to give a cinematic look to a piece that you've shot with absolutely no grading experience whatsoever if you found this tutorial useful please remember to give me a like and subscribe to my channel i would really really appreciate it there's loads of new stuff coming soon so remember to stay tuned and i'll see you soon [Music] you
