hi guys welcome today we're going to be looking at how to record and edit voiceover in final cut pro [Music] hi guys i'm nick griffiths and today we're going to be recording a piece of voice over and laying into a sequence that i've already made if you check out the color sequence that i have made previously you'll be able to get this to see the timeline so back to basics you can record your voice using the built-in microphone in your mac however i would strongly recommend you get a microphone you can pick them up really cheap i use a tonal one from amazon i'll put a link in the description um but any usb mic it'll just plug straight into your mac and it the the sound quality will be a lot lot deeper and richer than the microphone that you're going to get built into your mac if you think about the size of the microphone and it's further away yeah definitely invest in a microphone so once you've got your mic you've plugged it in all you do there is a built-in tool in final cut pro that will record your voice and lay into the timeline for you it's really easy and you find that tool by coming up to the window menu and there's an option there that says record voiceover or option command eight so you click on that and there we get our record voiceover window now if we look here you've got the slider that says input gain if you notice with me talking at the moment the red is hitting the red on some of my words so the input gain is too high so we need to lower that down so that the the levels are hitting around the middle or on the loud bits we can give it this voiceover a name so we'll maybe say vo for voiceover demo so in here we need to make sure that final cut pro is seeing the microphone that i've plugged in the other options are the system the built-in microphone so as long as you've got your microphone selected there your usb one you want monitor to be off because if you have your monitor on unless you've got headphones on while you're recording you'll get a howl round where the mic is being picked up in the speakers and you get this echoey noise that will get louder and louder which is really horrible so yeah keep that off this is the gain from the monitor so that will only highlight when that's on or off but as that's off you don't need to worry about it countdown to record it gives you a three two one so you know when to go mute the project while recording you definitely want that on because if it's off when you are recording you're going to be hearing the sound of what's on your timeline and that again is going to feed into your microphone so you to get clean dialogue from the mic you definitely want that off and create audition from takes means that you can create multiple auditions and final cut will put them on the timeline for you so we've got that all set up now all we need to do is get our script and hit record i'm going to wing this without a script let's see how i do i'm going to position the playhead at the beginning and then i'm just going to hit go on the record button here and i'm going to record my voiceover this is the french alps and today we're going to be taking an in-depth look at how hot the sun is and how crisp the snow is okay so i've recorded my voiceover it's laid it down on the timeline and i can hear it so let's close the voice over window and play what i've recorded this is the french alps and today we're going to be taking an in-depth look at how hot the sun is and how crisp the stones there's a few things wrong with that the levels of my voice aren't right and because i have previously cut this without voice the music there is fighting with the voice over so what we're going to do we're going to put a compressor on my voice first click on the voiceover on the timeline i'm going to come over to effects go to levels go to compressor and just drag that down and also what i really like doing is up in the inspector there's a equalization flat if you put that to bass boost i really like that the extra bass and the deepness that that gives your voice so if i turn off by clicking and pressing v on the music we can just hear my voice this is the french alps and today we're gonna be taking an in-depth look at how hot the sun is and how crisp the snow is so it's not too bad i'm just gonna click on it and i'm gonna up here i'm going to reduce maybe to minus two there's a little bit of peaking this is the french alps and today we're going to be taking an in-depth look so that's a bit better because the there were some bits there where it's just peeking into the red and we don't want that the other thing i'm going to do this is the french outfit make some edits in this so that the sound effects hit the right point so i'm going to trim the top back i'm gonna pull the voice that way and then i'm gonna here so that it so that that first bit happens before the sound effect here i'm gonna do a blade tool so that it cuts it and then i'm going to just slide that bit of voice over forward a bit so we've got this this is the french alps and today we're going to be taking an in-depth look at how hot the sun is and how crisp the snow is and then i'm going to just delay how crisp the snow is slightly and help so again blade tool cut that there back to a let's just slide that along a little bit at how hot the sun is and how crisp the snow is we're gonna be taking an end and maybe just push that fraction there okay so there are three chunks of voice over let's just tidy that end up okay and then we can turn our music back on by clicking on it and clicking v on the keyboard which activates the track again and then what we're going to do is this is the french out we need to raise and lower the levels of the music to dip where the voiceover is so we do that by hitting r on the keyboard to get our range selector tool what i'm going to do i'm just going to make these tracks a little bit bigger so that you can see what i'm doing a bit more so on our range selector here we're going to click and drag where the voiceover is so what i've done is if you see where these waveforms are here i've clicked and dragged the range selection over the music part of where i'm talking with that selected i can then using the mouse hover over the levels line and lower that down to maybe minus 11 and that's created a keyframed audio dip where the voiceover is so if we have a listen this is the french alps and the projector so now i'm going to do that for the rest of the sections like so over there where that bit of voiceover is and again down to minus 11. again here where that bit of voiceover is and down to minus 11 and let's have a listen this is the french alps and today we're going to be taking an in-depth look at how hot the sun is and how crisp the snow is [Music] okay so that's really good um this end fade is a bit abrupt for me so i'm going to click on that keyframe and just drag it out just to make that fade up on the music softer and again on that one it's just just because there's a little dip here how hot the sun is and how crisp the snow is and actually where that little rise of the music is i like just bringing that voice over just along the touch just to make that beat in time hot the sun is and how crisp the snow is [Music] there we go how about that that took very little time using the built-in final cut pro voice over tool plug your mic in select your voiceover tool record your voiceover it lays into the timeline we've done some little tweaks on the levels we've spliced up the clip and just adjusted the timings fractionally and we have done a keyframe it's called rubber banding in some places where you ride the levels of the audio of the music to compensate for your voice i hope you found this tutorial useful if you have please remember to give me a like and subscribe to the channel and i do all these videos just to share knowledge and stuff that i've got about editing and about techniques when i was first starting out and learning editing there wasn't youtube and there definitely wasn't tutorials and i didn't get any help so i am all for helping people in the industry start and learn and whether it be final cut pro premiere or avid even though all these two tools at the moment are on final cut all the techniques are the same you know if you're going to do voiceover in premiere you're going to do exactly the same maybe a slightly different way to do it in terms of what buttons you click but your concepts on the timeline of lowering your levels where your voice is and all those sorts of things are identical so like i said if you found it useful please remember to give me a like subscribe to the channel because there's loads of new stuff coming soon cheers [Music] you
