hi i'm donna jordan from jordan fabrics today i'm going to show you how to make a new quilt and it's called the new year's star now this is a pattern i've been working on for some time and because it's my own pattern it'll be available free on our website and you can get to it by clicking the link right below this video this is a one block wonder style quilt there's only one block so i've got quite a few of them already stitched up here and you can see once you start laying them out that when the blocks come together we're going to get a little bit of a secondary pattern i'm going to use layer cake squares to make my quilt so i've worked the pattern out so that each layer cake square will give me the colorful part of one star and the pattern includes a cutting diagram so you can see how to cut each layer cake now i've also written the pattern so that you can use jelly roll strips instead so each jelly roll strip will also give you all of the patchwork for one block and that's because believe it or not this jelly roll strip here is exactly the same amount of square inches of fabric as one layer cake square the only other thing we need is the background and all you need for each block is a three inch strip of background so it's very easy to calculate how much fabric you need for different size quilts say you want to make 10 blocks you're probably going to want to get a yard of fabric even though you only need exactly 30 inches you always want a little bit extra now i'm going to make 30 blocks for my quilt so i'm going to get 3 yards i'm going to use this layer cake of batiks they're all from hoffman called mountain meadow and i'm just going to pick out the fabrics that have a nice amount of contrast between the blocks and the background so for instance this one it's a beautiful batik but if i make a star out of that it's not going to show at all so i'm going to take all of these really pretty light ones and just put them aside for another project once you have your square selected we're just going to use the cutting diagram to cut each square so we're going to get two and a half inch strips and then we're going to get some one inch strips then we're going to just sub cut those into squares and a couple of long rectangles so i'm going to take i'm going to take four squares i can cut four layers at a time pretty easily they're already nice and lined up and my layers don't have pinked edges if yours have pinked edges you might want to go ahead and trim those off right now so i'm just gonna do the two and a halfs one more two and a half and a couple of one inch now these one inch strips here i'm just going to turn them and then they're just going to get in cut in half here so we're going to have four pieces that are each 5 inches by one inch and then these guys i'm going to turn all of these i'm going to do them one at a time and then i'm going to cut these into two and a half inch squares so that's all the cutting we need to do there and i'm going to go ahead and pull off all of the fabrics that are the same print and put them in a stack and then i'm going to go ahead and cut up all the rest of my squares now once all the layer cake squares or jelly roll strips are all cut up now we're ready to work on the background so for the background for one block we're going to cut a three inch strip and then we're going to make all these sub cuts so there's the three inch strip now i'm going to turn it to do all of these sub cuts and you're definitely should go and get the print off of the free pattern because then you'll know you won't make any mistakes when you're cutting now we have everything from the background all cut here all the pieces the next step is to take the three inch squares and we're going to cut them once on the diagonal so i'm going to take my ruler here and line it up on those corners and just make one cut on each of these squares so we've got some triangles i've got all the pieces the background and the patchwork pieces to make one block now the pattern has diagrams to show you what goes where but for now i'm going to show you with this finished block here let's start with the center here then we can work our way out so we're going to need one of the squares and then from the background we're going to need two of these two and a half inch by one and a quarters and two of these four by one and a quarters now let's stitch these on i'm just going to use a careful quarter inch seam here spin it around sew down this side and then both of these seam allowances are going to get pressed toward the center so i'm just going to finger press a little bit this is batik it's real easy to finger press this but those seams are going towards the middle now these guys here again i'm going to stitch them on and press the seam allowances toward the center and you might want to take that over to your ironing board and give it a little bit of pressing the next step is these star point blocks so we're going to be making four of them so we're going to use these rectangles for the background and these squares and we're going to put a square in this corner here and then we're going to want to stitch from this point to that point and there's several methods you can use to do that you can just stitch and hope that it's straight if you've done a lot of them that method works pretty good also a lot of machines will have a hole right here and you can take this is painters tape it's like masking tape but it comes off of your machine real easy without leaving a residue and you can stick a piece of tape on your machine and then you can stitch you put the top part on the edge and you can just as you go up you can leave this bottom corner on the tape another method if you want to get even more exact is you can draw on the back of here so you can take a chalk pencil or a pencil depending on what color what color your fabrics are and you can draw a line back there and then you know exactly where you're going to stitch so it's a matter of personal preference which method will work the best for you and i'm going to go ahead and do all four of these corners in one long string now what we're going to be doing with all of these is we're going to iron this over and we're going to trim off this excess back here but instead of just throwing it away and having it as a scrap we can use that for a bonus border we can make an extra half square triangle just by stitching one more time down here so i'm going to stitch about a half inch away from this stitching line and it doesn't have to be exact because once we get them stitched and ironed we're going to trim them all so they're an exact size so i'm just eyeing it up here so that i'm about a half inch away from this stitch line now i'm going to take all four of these over to the ironing board here and we want to take this piece here and it's going to get folded right along the seam line and all of these edges should match up when it's folded and then we'll just iron it just a little bit and you can give it a little steam so all four of these fold it open and iron and then we're going to open it back up and we're going to cut right between these two sewing lines and i like to use scissors here of course you can use your blade if you want to take it over to your cutting table so that's what we're going to do we're going to trim off that extra and we'll set aside these guys for now don't iron them open just set them aside now we're ready to add the second point of the star here so we're going to again put the square in the corner in the opposite corner here and we're going to want to stitch along this diagonal so you can turn it around like this because it's easiest to stitch in this direction and again start right at the tip and put this other tip on your line just stitch right down there i also added the second stitch line on these so that we can get that extra half square triangle for our bonus border so again fold it open so everything meets and then cut right down the middle all the star point blocks are done now we're ready to start working on the corners so we're gonna need the triangles and the strips so take one of the strips and put the triangle on top of it and you just want to center it up you can eye it you don't have to mark the center you just want to make sure you have about the same amount on the top as on the bottom and then we're going to stitch using a quarter inch seam here and i think i'm just going to move my tape right now because i can't see my quarter inch line very well now this seam is going to get pressed toward the background so you can just finger press it just gently press it there now we're going to add a second triangle now this one is also going to get centered and it's very easy to tell if it's centered because if you if you get it up too high you don't have the same amount showing there so just slide this down till this looks exactly the same on both sides it doesn't have to be perfect but it really helps you center it up without any marking at all seam allowance again is going to go toward the background now because these were finger pressed they're very easy to iron there's nothing tricky you can basically just flatten it out now we want to take these blocks and we want to trim them off so that they are square now there's two methods the first is to just take some scissors and you can see that line where the outside of the block is and you can just use your scissors to trim it so you do the one corner and then the second corner and i found this method to be the easiest and to be nice and accurate the other method is to put the block on your cutting table here and just get your square edge and line up both edges there and then you can just take your rotary cutter trim here and trim here so either method is going to work and give you a nice sharp corner now we have all the pieces we need to put the block together so this guy is going to go in the middle we've got these four around it and then the corners make that nice diagonal shape there so let's take these two pieces first put them right sides together take it right over to the machine match up your corners and edges and stitch right down there and i like to leave it on the machine and then get the next two pieces which are these two put it right sides together bring it right over here stitch that one and then the last two again right sides together bring it over and i will just leave all of those pieces attached i'm not going to trim between the rows because it helps me keep everything in order so we can open this all up and now we just have to add this last row so this one is going to go here put it right sides together and everything is fitting very nicely everything is all the same size it's a pretty easy block to make the blocks are the pieces are all small but it's not real intricate it's pretty easy to stitch up got the last piece here now we're going to want to press the seam allowances in opposite directions so we can get the rows sewn together easily so in the middle row we want the seam allowances going towards the middle and then on the top and bottom rows we want those seam allowances going away from the middle so i'm going to press it this way and away again here same thing on the bottom now when we put this row on here those seam allowances are going in opposite directions and they're going to nest and it's going to make it really easy to match up all the intersections this style star that i'm making it's called a floating point and what that means is this point here is floating and these are floating so you always get a nice sharp point there and none of the tips are going to be stitched off and look unpointy i like to have them nice and sharp there now let's press these ones let's see if these are going to the outside we're going to press both of these long seams toward the middle and that way when we sew our blocks together we can turn all the blocks and we will end up with all of the seams here going in opposite directions when we put the blocks together too making it easy to get those matched nicely now all we need to do is iron it nice and flat and on this block i actually think i'm going to iron it from the back first and that way i can make sure that my seam allowances are going in the direction that i want them to so i usually just smash it a little bit with my iron without steam and then flip it over square it up get it all nice and flat all right i'm going to go ahead and finish all the rest of the blocks all the blocks are done and i'm ready to lay out the whole quilt so all i'm going to do is just try to mix the colors up a little bit they are all browns but some are quite a bit lighter than others so i will sprinkle those so that we can get a nice color balance i'm going to have six in each row there's going to be five rows i've got all the blocks laid out i may continue to trade a little bit so i can make sure i have my colors nice and balanced but once every block is laid out all you have to do to make sure that you can match your intersections easily is check your first block so these seam allowances right here are going towards the middle now these ones are also going towards the middle but if i just turn it once now they're going to the outside so you just have to alternate here they're going to the outside now they're going to the middle now they're going to the outside it'll be very easy to get these matched up then the same thing will happen the other way and the whole thing will stitch up nice and flat okay i've got all the blocks sewn together and i went ahead and put the first little border all the way around but now remember those little teeny scrap triangles that we had left over when we made the patchwork we're going to use those now to make a bonus border these are actually half square triangles but because we just estimated when we stitched them they're not all exactly the same size so we're going to want to trim them the first method is to iron this open we'll iron towards the dark side and then we'll trim this finished square down to size i want to trim it to one and a half inches so i can put my ruler here i'm lining up on these two sides and then i'm just going to trim off these two sides with my blade and then that got that one dog ear and all i have to do now is trim off this little dog here which is that extra piece right now but there's another method that's a little bit quicker if you have a strip tube ruler you can put the one and a half inch line here on your stitching line and you can either trim off both sides or you can just slide it over until this side is lined up and you can trim off just one trim right there now you'll notice some of so there's the half square triangle it's all exactly the right size it needs to be now you'll notice some of these have the little extra piece on it from when we when we did our patchwork so half of them don't and half of them do it's good if you trim that off because then you won't have any extra bulk in all of your squares once you've got a bunch of those done head on over to the sewing machine now i have enough to go all the way around the quilt but i think it's going to be a lot more interesting if i just put some on each side so i'm going to sew 24 together so i'm going to make four sections that have 24 so i'm just going to sew them side by side with the orientation of the square facing the same way every time so just one after another after another and you can vary the colors so you don't have two right next to each other they're the same but don't worry too much about what goes where just make a row that's 24 squares long okay i've got four sections here and they're all exactly the same i'm not sure what's the best way to iron these yet i do want the seams all going to one side so let's see let's try it from this side it looks like they want to go that way i always want to iron the way that they want to go so i'm just going to kind of pull it and press those seams to one side and see if that works and i didn't finger press these i'm just going all the way down now they're kind of laying the way i want smooth it out give it a little steam very fun so here's what i'm going to do with these little borders in the corners this one's going to go here and this one's going to go right here and you can see the far corner up there i've done the same thing so all i have to do is get some extra border pieces that are cut the same width as the patchwork and stitch it on to the end here i don't think i mentioned the um border is cut one and a half inches which is the same as this width but all the numbers are in the pattern you don't have to worry about remembering any of that here's how we make sure we have the right length for this border it's going to go on the end here but i like to move it in about half a block and smooth it down the quilt here and then when i get to the end i'm going to trim off the excess here [Music] and to get a nice straight cut you can fold it back on itself so the fold is even with the raw edge and trim this now i'm going to move this down to the edge and pin it and stitch it on i'll do the same thing on the far side and then the same thing for the top and bottom then i'm going to add one more border around the edge get it on the quilting machine i've got all the borders on now we need to pick some thread anything in the brown or neutral shades will work on here so if we went with a dark brown like this it's going to show quite a bit in those dark areas this one i think this will not show at all in the light and even on the darkest ones here it's not going to show much this one right in the middle so we'll probably get some showing here and some showing there but i think since the patrick is so strong in geometric that i'm going to go with the lightest option because it's going to blend in the best for the new year's star quilt i kind of have to go with a star pattern and this is nice it's very simple each star will show up and i'm going to do it pretty small [Applause] i've got the new year star quilt all done this is a really fun project it's really nice to work on one little block at a time and i love the fact that one layer cake makes all the dark patchwork in the one block these patchwork borders i had a lot of these squares i could have gone all the way around but i really like it how it's balanced on both of those corners the quilting those little stars you can see them every so often they look really good now on the back side i just used a watercolor batik i really can't see the quilting very well but just a hint of it nice dark brown binding it turned out about 50 by 58 inches and again that's with 30 blocks if you want to make a much bigger quilt you know you could do 120 blocks and make it quite a bit bigger it's really easy to figure out how big to how many blocks you need to make other sizes they turned out about eight and a half inches for each block thanks
