hi i'm donna jordan from jordan fabrics today i'm going to show you how to make a really fun quilt and all it takes is a layer cake just some ten inch squares we're gonna get the patchwork the accents the corner triangles all from this one package the first thing is to sort these into some color piles so I'm gonna need some dark backgrounds and some light backgrounds for the patchwork the body of the patchwork I think I'm going to not do these really really busy ones here I'm going to set this aside now these light ones like that that's one of my lights all of these dark guys here these are going to be in the body of the patchwork and what we're going to do is we're going to take these dark ones and we're going to take some of these light ones and we're going to cut these into five inch squares and then we're gonna take some other really light ones and set them aside and cut them into corner setting triangles I have my twelve dark prints here and I need to cut them into five inch squares so I'm going to separate these into two stacks of six because I don't think I can cut 12 layers successfully I know I can cut six so I'm gonna line them up nice and neat and we're basically going to cut them in half both ways but I may trim off some of that pinked edge if I can get it there these pinked edges bother a lot of quilters as they're sewing I've gotten used to it and I understand why they have them like that when they're cut but I like to get rid of them if I can now the darks are in five inch squares now these nine lights we're gonna cut exactly the same way now we're going to take these six light squares and cut them to eight and a half inches now that this is eight and a half inches square we are going to cut along both diagonals so just line your ruler up with both corners leave everything right where it is turn this to the other two corners and make a second cut the last thing we need to do is take two dark squares and we're going to cut these into one by five inch strips once you've got it squared up cut it in half and now we're just going to cut one inch strips now we have all the pieces cut for the whole quilt the first pieces we're going to work with are on light five inch squares and our little 1 inch strips I'm going to take one of these 5 inch squares and I'm going to cut it in half take one of the accent colors and we'll head to the sewing machine using a quarter inch seam we're going to stitch this on to one half here it's exactly the right length so it's pretty easy to stitch on and you want to press your seam allowance toward the center or toward the dark now just stitch this other half right back on and we will end up with a five inch square which is exactly what we started with that's what it looks like from the back it looks like we didn't even do anything to it now we want to do this with all of our light squares they're all done and now we're ready to start laying out the quilt we have everything we need here so we are going to save those guys for the end and we are going to alternate on point the darks and the lights so I'm just going to lay them out first this is usually how I do this I don't worry too much if I have two of the same fabrics near near each other I train around afterwards so we're going to put these ones in between again I know it's the same color I know I'm going to switch but I like to just get enough of it laid out so I can see what the quilt is going to look like so I need six in this first row one two three four five six I have all of the five inch blocks laid out so I'm alternating the dark ones with the light ones and you'll notice the light ones every other row they're facing this way then I've got some facing the other way so I'm essentially alternating the way those accent strips are going now you could put them all going the same way it really doesn't matter it's a matter of preference so I recommend lay it out one way turn them around see what you like the best now we're ready for our corner setting triangles so these are gonna go in all the gaps except we are going to leave the very corners open just leave don't put anything in any of the four corners now we're ready to start sewing our rows together now on a quilt that's on point the rows are all along the diagonal so this is my first row right here so I am just going to pin these three pieces in place and take it right over to the machine and stitch it up these the corner setting triangles here they're longer than we need and that's okay we're going to line up the top edge here and we're just going to let any of that extra hang off there use a quarter inch seam and just stitch right off the edge and leave all that extra there and then we'll put this guy here match these up and you can turn it around or you can turn it upside down but you want to make these corners match now this row we are going to want to finger press the seams all towards the dark fabric if we finger press towards the dark fabric on all the individual rows they will all end up alternating and that'll make it real easy to sew the rows together now I'm going to pin this row together and take it over to the machine here's the second row I've already got it finger pressed and this is going to fit right up next to this one I like to trim off the little bit extra here before I sew the rows together so I'm just gonna take this here line my ruler up right there and cut off that little bit of extra and the little extra up here now this will fit right here and we can sew these two rows together so now we'll just keep making rows and keep adding them to the quilt I have most of the quilt top done here all the rows are together and it's all ironed remember when you iron to iron along the directions of the squares so that you don't stretch it you don't want to iron this way iron this way in this way the last thing we need to do here is fill in these corners so I took one of my leftover squares I cut it down to seven and a half inches cut it along both diagonals and this is going to go right in the corner so I'm just going to stitch it on and iron it open now we're ready to trim this nice and straight so on my cutting board make sure it's smooth and I made these outside corner pieces a little bit extra big because I'm going to trim it one half of an inch away from there so I'm going to put my ruler with the half inch line on the tip of these points so you can see it right there and then I'm just going to trim off this extra I'm gonna trim around all four sides and then we will start working on the border I have squares left over I have some of the layers so we're going to use those in a pieced border we're going to use up all the rest of them so we're gonna use the entire layer cake so I think I've got a couple of dark ones here and I'm going to cut those two two and a quarter inches wide now we're gonna take the light squares and we're going to cut them three and a quarter inches wide now we're gonna make some little strip units here I'm going to use one darker one in the middle of two lighter ones they're all the same length there's still 10 inches long so just use a quarter inch seam and press all the seams towards the dark power once you have your strip units done you want to cut these two two and a quarter inches now I like to stack several of them up so I'm going to offset them a little bit so the seam allowances don't all line up but I'm going to pile these up and cut four layers at a time now I'm going to pick out seven of these guys and I'm gonna line them up like this it doesn't really matter what order they're in but I am going to alternate my center square between the solid and the print so I'm going to put seven of these in a row and I'm just going to stitch them like that so the only thing I have to match is this seam right here now just open this up and finger press the seam all the same direction we're going to press them all that way now see the next piece will fit right here so again just put it on there match up just that one seam right there and stitch it on now that I've got those sewn together I just need a little bit more on each end so that I can cut my border out of here so I'm going to take one of these extra strips that are the three and a quarters I'm gonna cut it in half and I'm just going to stitch a little bit on this end and stitch a little bit on that end now we're just going to trim this to size I am going to cut this three and a half inches wide so that means I'm going to be cutting a half inch beyond the point of these squares so the first side I'm just going to trim this off a half inch beyond that point then I'm going to turn it around and I'm going to measure over three and a half inches and now all we need to do is straighten off the ends a little bit so I'm gonna line it up on my board here and I'm gonna cut it one half inch again beyond that patch right there on each side I've got the pieced borders all done here so here's what I'm gonna do for the quilt I'm gonna put a little teeny stopping border right there then I've got two short piece twins and two long peace ones so this is gonna go in the middle of this side here I'm gonna cut some more three and a half inch light fabric to make this long enough so we'll stitch to this on the piste border on centered one more border all the way around and then we'll get it onto the quilting machine now that the quilt is all quilted you can really see those accents so we're calling this pattern ribbons because these look like they're little ribbons all over it I love this little special border and the whole quilt used up the whole layer cake which is what I like I like to use all the pieces these small borders here really framed it we call this a stopping border and it really stops that Patrick and makes it so you can see that little accent border really well quilting doesn't show very much on this because the patterns very busy and that's what I wanted I wanted the quilting to recede it's a nice oatmeal color thread quilt turned out 50 by 63 just a really fun project thanks for watching our tutorial today on how to make the ribbons quilt we hope you enjoyed it now we're gonna have another giveaway we're going to give away a kit to make a table runner these are kits we've cut here and this is what
