Cool story. Two amazing things—1) the car is worth $2 million, and 2) Herbie Hancock will be 81 years old in April and looks like he’s in in 40’s. He must be living right.

Fun little video with Jay Leno that includes a cool Miles story. I knew about his Cobra but not the story about the dick car salesman.

Imagine Miles when his car got left in the dust. He had no clue how fast that Cobra was.

This leaves out the story of how Herbie was going to buy a station wagon and Donald Byrd told him hell no, go buy a nice car, check out this Cobra that just came out.

Byrd gave Hancock great advice. He told him not to give up his songwriting royalties and then told him to buy a car that's now worth $2M.

[Music] jazz musicians invented the concept of cool no really they did jazz cats took one look at the rules of music and threw the whole thing out the window and herbie hancock was on the front lines of this musical revolution hey jay hey man how you doing great hey can we have some more lights in here welcome very cool this is what a legendary jazz man looks like let me break it down for you in the 60s he played with the miles davis quartet in the 70s as banned the headhunters went platinum and bridged the gap between jazz and pop in the 80s he launched into super stardom with his hit rocket then he scored the movie around midnight and won an academy award now he spends his time bringing the people the world together through jazz music oh and he's a real car guy too we're not in a garage i know we're not in the garage right now we'll get to the car part later because people know academy award winner multi grammy winner one of my heroes do you ever play small clubs now or is it mostly concert halls and things i haven't played a club in a long long time i started with miles in 1963 and we play clubs i mean the intimacy of the club is really fantastic because you're right in touch with the audience that's right in front of you you know and the smoke oh remember you come out you come out of the club and you smoke an ashtray yeah and you would just see a haze like it would the ceiling would be here and the cloud would be like right here and your eyes are your eyes with water i actually like the fact that the ceilings were low because they contained the sound i remember somebody said it was like playing under their bed you know the ceiling was so low he says i feel like i'm under my bed do you remember playing a club called lenny's on the turnpike oh absolutely yeah i remember there was a young comedian that opened for you you probably don't remember him his name was jay leno he had dark hair kidding no i did for you and miles and i was really yes it was fascinating because you miles davis two drinks steak dinner show 12.95 12.95 12.95 with baked potato yeah we got the baked oh that's right i forgot they had really good baked potatoes they did have good baked potatoes yeah laney's not the turnpike that was my jazz education because every famous jazz act in the world came through there and i got to see them all as close as i am to you right now yeah it was a magic time oh yeah yeah yeah now the other reason you're here you're not only legendary obviously jazz man legendary car guy you are the longest original owner of this car in the history of the world yeah that's true this car is the essence of cool i had it brought around for you oh look so you're gonna check it out wow if rarity is cool this car can't be beat an original 1963 ac shelby cobra and it looks all 1963. the real deal wow less than a thousand shelby cobras were made by famous race car driver carol shelby between 1962 and 1965. and don't be fooled by this car's unassuming exterior it fired up the famous ferrari rivalry with its win at the united states road racing championships in 1963. the cobras that still exist today well they are some of those coveted and expensive classic cars out there but tell the story of how this car came to be because that's the most fascinating part well i wrote this song called watermelon man that's a huge hit i actually got a big check for the publishing of the song the big check was like three thousand five hundred dollars that was a lot of money in six right so donald byrd who was my roommate the great trumpet player who actually discovered me he said by the way there's an american car that's been beating the ferraris right and so i said okay i'll go down and look at it i just want to see what it looked like so i get down the store i got jeans on or something how old are you now 22 i was i was 23. okay salesman's there with his white shirt on and a tie he doesn't even look up at me i'm getting a little hot under the collar yeah yeah and i said i'd like to buy the cobra he finally looks up he says do you know how much that car costs i said yeah six thousand dollars i'll bring it a cash tomorrow right was part of the reason you bought it because you're so mad at the salesman yep yeah i mean nasty salesmen will probably sold more cars right right anything else he did me a great favor he has no idea what a favorite that's funny that's funny okay so you got this car but your musician you can't put any instruments in it can't even lock it but it looks really cool it does look really cool well let's show people what we're talking about here because it's a very early car this had the 260 v8 the later cars had the 289. and something really rare it's got a two barrel on it doesn't it there aren't any others like this yeah i wonder why well what i was told was that the the first 10 cobras that were built yeah were all a little bit different it's got a generator rather than an alternator yep it's a nice original car that just hasn't been messed with can we uh take it for a ride yeah [Music] absolutely [Music] now does your wife get this or is this just oh that's herbie he's got this weird thing with the car i mean does she get it no now miles was a big car guy he had maseratis and lamborghini was he a little jealous when he got this car what do you think miles didn't know i had bought this car yeah so after the gig was over he's look i'll give you a lift home i said oh thank you miles i'd love to but i drove my car here so we get downstairs miles looks in my car and says cute cute cute right because he was driving you know a maserati anyway i get in my car i pull up to him and his car light turns green i floor it miles floors it so when i get to the stoplight i have time to pull up a cigarette light it yeah it's gonna be cool wait for miles yeah and i'm like puffing them and then miles pulls up on the side and he says what the heck is that that's not exactly his words he had another word right and i said it's an ac cobra mal said get rid of it i said why is it cause it's dangerous it's funny and then he cut right out that's funny it was sweet [Music] and how many miles you got on it it's got to have a couple hundred thousand miles a couple of hundred thousand it was my daily car but then it stopped being my daily car when the value of it started going down and herbie really went on a limb to get this thing back in 1962. he paid about six thousand dollars for it which was a lot of money but today it's worth an estimated two million now was there ever a point you were tempted to sell it like man i paid six thousand it's worth sixty thousand now i should get rid of it it was i almost sold it for ten thousand dollars one time wow i had no idea that this car would appreciate cars didn't appreciate back in there no for me it doesn't get any more bucket list than this driving through the hills of los angeles of one of the world's greatest musicians won the world's greatest cars still got it well what a thrill that is oh thanks dave it is i mean it's two american icons the cobra and the hancock no it's really great man i mean thanks for this well this cobra has a rhythm it does have a rhythm yeah it's got a heartbeat yeah i like that yeah i like that pretty cool see this your tesla's never gonna have a heartbeat that's funny [Music] hey cnbc fans thanks for checking out our youtube channel here you'll find videos from all your favorite cnbc shows be sure to subscribe by clicking right here click on the videos around
