open your Bibles please to Psalm number 48 Psalm number 48 verse number one Psalm 48 verse 1 great is the Lord yeah that's a good book four little words if it just came and read those four words and went home great is the Lord and greatly to be praised I prayed Sunday morning while misunderstood phrase can you jump up and say well praise God that's not praise that's telling somebody else praise praise is commendation this morning I looked at the sunrise and said dear God just sure did a good job this morning that's praising God it's commending it what he did I looked at the trees down here that will have an August up where we live and I we have two seasons winter and all this and I looked at the trees especially bugle pine trees and that's it sure done good today greatly to praise and the city of our God and a mountain of His Holiness this is a good book I mean it's hard not to stop every time you say anything let me explain this passage to you before he did the Jews were in captivity every bit of the Old Testament nearly every bit evolves around a little 70 year old period called Babylonian captivity that little period that I mentioned more than anything else and all the Old Testament my preaching most all or all of the prophets are either pre captivity prophets our captivity prophets or post captivity prophets now we find ourselves in the psalm here in captivity I'm sorry we've just come back from captivity for 70 years the Jews have been in captivity now they're back home their beloved city that has been destroyed as being revealed their beloved temple that had been leveled is now being to begin beloved walls that had been failed or now rising again and they're just full of expectancy because they're home beautiful for situation inverse to the joy of the whole earth is Mount Zion they're back to not sign against a boy sure is pretty on the sides of the north notice that you southern people [Applause] I'm trying to give the northern or something they can understand too and that isn't easy I'm the only fellow I know can make the whole crowd mad while I'm reading the Scriptures God is known in her palaces for a refuge well though the kings were a symbol they passed not together they saw it and so they marvel they were troubled and hasted away fear took upon them they're in pain as of a woman in travail now brick is the ship ships of tarshish with an east wind and here's my text as we have heard so have we seen in the city of our God in the city of our God God will establish it forever Selah we've heard while we're in captivity some of us were born in captivity we've heard about the city and now we see it we've heard about Mount Zion with its magnificent Beauty and now we see it we've heard about the Mount of Olives over looking and watching guard over the city of Jerusalem and now we see it as we have heard soul have we seen now to understand that passage you've got to go back to Psalm 44 so turn back to the first verse of Psalm 44 as Psalm 48 finds them home from captivity Psalm 44 finds them still in captivity and it says we have heard with our ears Oh God our fathers have told us what worked out it's in their days and the times of old now putting these two Psalms together before I pray let me explain putting these two Psalms together you have these people hundreds of miles maybe 500 miles from home slaves in captivity with nothing but memories are here saying we've heard with our ears our fathers of Poulos we've heard with our ears our fathers have told us what thou didst in their times and their day and the signs of old but now then they're back home and they say exactly what we've heard is what we see I want to speak on this subject this morning father I want to be a help today I guess if I were honest I'd have to say that I'd like to have you have this sermon called a good sermon I guess there's no manners in me for that but at ten thousand times will they help somebody in a stutter all the way through and then be complemented with excellence and fail I pray your Holy Spirit should help me to speak but if I don't speak well would you speak for me and through me and to me into the hearts of those who the air for many years I've been a man on the mission my mission will be explained to you this morning all of us are concerned about the perishing nation called United States we see our country decayed we're especially concerned about the leadership of our country those of us who love the Bible of America and they are synonymous are concerned about our president and her husband and we begged for God to take care of him because if she dies think what would heaven the White House and the truth is every decent American whether they're here this morning are here they want to do something about it and we want to do something about our country this morning I do and so do you we want into this for what's in one little person what can I do and so comes along comes the moral majority which I think was a detriment to America rather than an asset it took bus captains and make them precinct captains this country's ever saves you always say by precinct by precinct captains you can save the bus captain he's not getting the ride fill in the White House is getting the right Fellows of the church house there's no good people saying I mean our country is not gonna despair it by political involvement second Chronicles 7:14 still in the Bible then staff the queer people are not calling my name shall straighten themselves then when I hear from heaven forgive their sin heal their land then set the baby killers or drunks or alcoholic are Hugh Hefner's for new morality crowd our situation ethics crowd will get none to say that at all it said if my people that's us which a call by my name that's us well humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways then will I God is responding God then will I hear from heaven forgive their sin and heal their land but so was our standing I think here all will was sincere I mean then I say that I think he made a mistake and starting the more majority but I think he was sincere I think he's a sincere man and though I do not agree with the moment many things if anything I do believe that your Falwell is a patriotic American and wanting to do what he could to save America I think he chose the wrong Avenue all right but but many good people chose the same Avenue because they have a sincere desire see our countries say then others saw people lying down in front of abortion clinics and I certainly have no patience with the queer none whatsoever but somehow we got the idea if we can just lie down in front of Washington X and if we can prevent an abortion or two then we would have done something we individually would have done something to save our nation I think the motive is good but it's not going to save America and then we said okay then we'll uh we'll fight we'll fight the will we're joined the gay anti-gay ordinance class now the honest truth is folks none of those things all those things were admirable and I'm not I'm not gonna fight the guys trying to keep a baby from being killed I'm not gonna do that but he's not gonna save America I promise you this morning if you listen to me for the next 2-3 hours no one knowing this crowd I've said it for 20 minutes and I've seen the same people hollering preach sound asleep after 15 minutes but before you leave this morning if you listen to me carefully and I'm not gonna I'm gonna go a different direction this one if you listen carefully to me you will see a little life and you will see something that and you will walk out this place saying the first time in my life maybe I believe I'm trying this morning they're taking the girls while ago will have the same thing you're gonna have is Jordan this country heard with our ears our fathers and told us we've heard with our ears our fathers have told us walk worked out did spend their days and the times of old said song written in captivity I think I can see a father talking to the son a fatherhood singing sites of Jerusalem never see a father who had seemed the magnificence of the temple but a son who'd never seen Mount Zion a father hoods felt the protection and the safety of the mighty walls around the city whose son had never seen those massive walls together in the little house and beveling father says something to tell you some stories dad let me tell you a story about our forefathers our forefathers used to be slaves the land of Egypt one day God told Moses who was the leader one of the great men in history God told Moses to tell the people to each family kill a lamb and take the blood of that lamb and applied on the front porch to the hut door was the house the littles and doorpost of the house a death angel is gonna come by that night everybody had to butterflied be safe but those that did not have to blow the flag we had the firstborn of their family taken by their yes son we've heard with our ears our fathers have told us we've heard without years my father's hope that isn't all son you know what hey what there you know son that that all of a sudden Ferriero relented and let our people go and because of that miracle of God three or four million Jews were set free our people were set free from the bondage of Egypt yeah that's a wonderful story is that true that's what we've heard with our ears i fathers at oldest we've heard with our ears our fathers have told us we've heard with our ears our fathers have told us what work that God did in those days and the times of old well son they got down to the Red Sea a mighty body of water and they had to cross the Red Sea to be free but they had nowhere to get across and Ferriero had changed his mind repented that he'd let the people go send his arm is down and on one side of our people were the armies of Egypt on the other side of the mighty body of water at the Red Sea what did they do son God told Moses to take a rod with your head and take that rod and smite the waters of the Red Sea and you know what we've heard with our ears I fathers have told us we've heard with our ears our fathers have told us we've heard with our ears our fathers have told us that the waters of the Red Sea stood at attention and rolled back hello strong wind came to dried the ground out and three or four million Jews walked over all dragged around well son I wasn't there but hey we've heard with our ears our fathers have told us we've heard with our ears our fathers have told us what else dad son you know of it that the armies of Egypt decided to cross on that same dry ground and they got in the middle of that Red Sea and they all got baptized permanently it was Sunday [Applause] dad all those ships and soldiers for killed yeah son we've heard with our ears my father's at oldest we've heard with our ears our fathers have told us son you're out in the wilderness there were no but Donald's out there that have something to eat yet what did all those people eat son God sent them little of one-a-day vitamin tablets covered the earth every morning like the hoary frost of the dawn and for forty years every morning except the Sabbath and twice as much on the day before the Sabbath air for morning God fittest people with angels we've heard with our ears our fathers of todas dead what else well they had to have water and God said to Moses take that same rod and smite a rocking Horeb and water gushed out to take care of the needs of all of our forefathers and son do you know what as their feet through their shoes grew Wow and as their bodies grew their clothes drew did you ever notice how these two guys favor each other look at him carefully they start over a while ago and they said we could be a do it I said no the two of you could be a trio little guy lose five pounds he criticized there by the total wave and son do you know and as the people got bigger their clothes Anthony that's the funniest thing in the world can you imagine a little three-year-old boy wearing a little play suit any now he grows for 40 years that suit goes he's 43 wearing a big play suit size 44 places it's funny a little baby as it goes the booty is get bigger just get bigger it's funny how we should have heard that but everything happen that's what our fathers told us we've heard with our ears I fathers at oldest now the sign looks just like that if cities would have those walls they're building then they're just like the ones that he told me about and that temple that's being raised again looks an awful lot like the one that he told me about we've perfect our ears our fathers have told us we represent ears our fathers have told us and now they say bless God great is the Lord and greatly to be praised beautiful for situation is Mount Zion and the Lord is in his holy temple and it's just like we heard as we have heard so have we see 46 years ago a little timid introverted young man with the prettiest son wife you ever saw with a black cat $40 gold in the Greyhound bus down that how we rated hair tortise Texas Baptist College 20 miles from deer ever preach the sermon the least lacking a person in the whole world ever feel free to I was called a pastor of the church little church is about 20 miles from here now at the edge of Marshall Texas that time is more than the country than it is now I went for a whole year and never had to let us say nobody I didn't know what you know there was no house understand college there was no Texas Baptist College there was no soul-winners conference there were no pastor schools in those days I didn't know what to do not gonna call some of these very time tickets that you've driven through I can recall that night away in the night walking in the pine thicket to these Texas myths and the hills around here looking up their single I'd go to my pulpit on Sunday morning you nobody gets saved I'd go back on Sunday night nobody gets a it I'd go out behind the church in Little Creek behind the church and throw up what food I need for the day I went the library of East Texas Baptist College I went to biographical section I'm a bar graph from nuts still I am rebar of his husband I went the Biograph of a sector these Texas Baptist college and I decided to find out what the answer was I decided to read the biography of every great preacher I could find and find out what the common denominator was of all creatures I was going to find the answer and by the way preacher if you'll find the answer a guy you'll find the answer to God stop for water humans thirsty didn't sell water he was big didn't sail full water on him who's handsome didn't style pour water on him who's intellectual didn't sell pour water on him again preach good he said you get thirsty and I'll promise you get thirsty and God will give you his mighty power I [Applause] was that's it there these are sacred places for me I said library I read about the great revival and the great man in my heart began to burn and asked how we shall deal back in those days in the days of greatness rivals in the days when thousands got saved and I'd read and I read and I took the 44 Psalm and put it over here we've heard with our ears our fathers have told us we've heard with our ears our fathers have told us I put over here on this side on this side I read the biography I read about the great Puritan revivals in the early days of our country I read about the mighty power of God that swept across this nation in the Puritan revivals and asked that Oh God could it be possible that down here in the pine thickets of East Texas a little boy preacher could have their same thing that they had back in those days in my heart burned on the inside can I read that song put that song right there on the day on the table in farmy beside the biographies and I read the song we perfect our ears our fathers have told us we've perfect our ears our fathers have told us we've perfect our ears our fathers have told us go back to mother on Sunday and preaching nobody walked out I preach on Sunday night nobody walked out I wait for know those days I wait 141 pounds I couldn't eat I got down under on hundred pounds my wife sat down without the power of God I'm not gonna preach on Sunday and have a dry hole and play golf on Monday morning god I saw we've heard with our ears I heard with our ears our fathers told us positive told us and I said God caught you up or you do you play favorites I mean God did you discriminate against son did you have something for the Puritans you didn't have you don't have for me body comes called a meeting and they said pastor you've got to take care of yourself we love you you're a young man you can have a great future if you'll take care of yourself but you're going to die I couldn't walk up and down these Pines tickets of these Texas I Drive up the Longview inflate water can I Drive up that ladder Texas and down the henderson over toward the Tyler Highway and down the Kilgore and pick me out some woods and I walk around these thickets here these Pines thickets and fall on pine needles on the sand hills and that's all God Oh God we've heard with our ears our fathers have told us we've had with our ears i fathers have told us we've heard with our ears our fathers have told us Oh God could it be the same thing the Puritans head a little 21 you I read about the next generation bit about a man named Jonathan Edwards I didn't who I never heard of it before life not is biography written I hate preach that sermon sinners in the hands of an angry god same one Bob great preachers once every year have it I read how I read read in the book and heard with my ears the authors that told me I read with my eyes the authors told me how then we had preached that sermon sinners that grab to the pillars in the building hold all the pillars to keep from falling into hell imminently can I read about that mighty power and that same generation Gorge up and down the eastern shores of our country came preaching 3,000 times on one subject he must be born again and go to the next town and preach he must be born again over 3,000 times and one person asked him is to witbier why have you placed over 3,000 times on you must be born again him the great big boss reforms that could preach to 50,000 people without after vacation he said I've preached 3,000 times on you must be born again because he must be born again I read and sitting there in the library my heart would burn I'd read over here we've heard with our ears our fathers have told us we've heard with our ears I fathers have told us what thou didst in their days the times of all we've heard with our ears we've heard with our ears I fathers have told us a bit about in those days of George Whitfield in Georgia in Johnson Edwards one fundamental preacher for every 2,000 people in the United States I'm not a Jonathan Edwards I'm no George wit to you would you call me Oh God I'm tired of preaching nobody walk in the house I'm tired of friar hold Oh God could it be power that they had I read about the next generation the great revivals of 1800 led by Peter Cartwright miss camp meetings Charles G Finney and his matter of eigvals I read about Charles defender going to a school and walking in the school and the entire administration and faculty and student body falling under conviction by his very presence and begging him to come from class to class and tell them how to be saved and everybody the entire school would get saved I think about the great revivals at Charles E Finney had and the bread Kent means a Peter Cartwright and the heart burns on the inside that's your God oh my god could it be now we've heard with our ears we've heard we've heard ladies and gentlemen it's time we saw my Steve who's the same yesterday today and forever I am THE LORD thy God he said I change not every good gift of a perfect gift is from above and cometh down from the Father of lights in whom there is no that one is neither shadow of turning yesterday today forever Jesus is the saint yes he is I read history books Psalm 44 one over here in a history book over here about the Great Portland Street prayer meetings that came the next generation I read about the mighty power of God in that age about the revival the trips across America like a prairie fire [Music] do you discriminate against one generation are you partial to 1800 are you partial to the days of the Fulton Street family knees Oh God could it be that's the same thing that happened could happen now that same power that Wesley had that he got in four o'clock one morning when he prayed for sixty preachers all night long and the mighty power of God came on him could that be available for now could that power that calls your all chief any because people have followed their faces and could that be for now and could it be for little country preacher not very talented and not very big and not very smart but very very thirsty about the next generation son of school teacher named mr. Kimble paced nervously in front of us you store in Boston Massachusetts finally get the courage to walk inside that shoe store the witness to a 17 year old shoe clerk named flight finally got the courage it entered this shoe store witness for that young man is Dwight Moody will say what if my memory serves me correctly a young man this platform and hit this great church you didn't over round the nation mr. Kimble one who I put into place and the Whitewood lifted two continents to God one over a million souls hello million souls say you through his ministry I read in the history book here Bogg Rafi over here I read we've heard with our ears I fathers have told us we've heard with our ears i fathers have told us I read about how to ladies esteemed the Dwight Moody and said Mr moody we're praying for you we're pray you'll get something you don't have I don't need anything else I'm having five to ten people saved every time I preached mr. moody you do need something else to her we're praying you're giddy mr. moody believed those ladies after a while began to pray for the same thing they were praying for the one day walking down Wall Street he was smitten by the Holy Ghost splitting the pavement and dig God it would hold himself but he could find refuge in the bedroom of a friend he sought refuge in her friend's bedroom in there the mighty power of God came Oh mr. goody I can just say it and bingo hall now he'd preach the same sermon he preached when he had five saved a nice 500 say same 70 preach when he had ten saved now he has a hundred saved in my heart hold the inside spending in that little library and he's Texas Baptist College not mulberry leaves are rustling there was a fire burning in my soul and as little God couldn't it be possible that Dwight Moody what do you understand me but I walk the same streets you used to walk next generation the left view of the Chicago White Sox how RIT about trade his uniform for business suit his love for a Bible his bat thrill pulpit coming up down this country challenge to no face to around by the way if you don't like Barbra Streisand you wouldn't life with his Sundays either he's Wilder involved ring heard bob boubker feats of the day and he's down here somewhere I forget where he was down here up there over here back here somewhere he's I gotta go visit an outline for a few minutes that encouraged me I never do we have an outline visit Sunday said that finish Sunday his outline letters weren't each hi I read about lily Sunday great meetings ahead up and down the length and breadth of this nation and I set there as a kid preacher back to my pulpit no nobody walk you out Sunday night nobody walk you out back to the woods and back to the library and back to biographies and back to Psalm 44 one we've heard with our ears I fathers have told us we've heard with our ears i fathers have told us what up yourself just ask your father I asked the question and the answer started to count the dispensation it said this is not the age of revival hogwash on the dispensation go fear Bible says this is really out of see an age and you can't do it today this the soul in an age and you can do it today [Applause] theologian said it's not the age of miracles and now can I take you to a very mature story the most of you've heard me preach the song I've got to set it on hole here one night about 80 miles from here the pine pickets of East Texas a little preacher weighed less than a hundred pounds I've cried and prayed all night long as I've done so many neither there was not one week that pass for months I didn't cry and pray all night long and sometimes two or three nights a week all night Oh God Oh God and you respect your person got all my things I'm thinking just that just off of highway 43 leading the Henderson from Marshall nobody's ever walk we've heard with our ears I thought this have told us we've heard with our ears our fathers have told us I'm tired of hearing with my ears I want to see with my eyes fell on my face and the fine I cried for hours from that mere moment full ringing our little parsonage and a voice that not a miss yes I work with your alcoholic bed and he's in Dallas today we're in Irving hanging drywall and your dad was up on a sawhorse hanging drywall in the ceiling he said Reverend how's your dad just got the heart attack I got to the car and go sit down the specs we had a service we buried him Sunday afternoon in the Texas forty miles south of Dallas I took the family home and I returned to the very spot the grave of my daddy's still freshly I fell face down on my bed is grave I'm not gonna be a powerless preacher I'm not I'm not I'm not I've heard I've heard I've heard I've heard I'll die if I don't see I don't know how long I stay they're my best friends so they stayed there for three days I know all the time I thought something happened I went back to the little church over here outside Marshall Texas the dive down highway 43 you can see it it's now Rebecca lodge a little building about to fall over take your place to me coming back to the little church that Sunday I'm sending out our freaks folks had three people say I didn't expect that they didn't have that many saved in the whole ministry had three people say that Sunday God has not down there those days we didn't we didn't we voted folks in the church on the spot if they got since that day that somebody had been stayed in my for my church I'm talking about country churches little town churchism little city churches big city churches not one Sunday since that neighbor what somebody hasn't does that ties that if I'm in history we have four children the oldest is 41 not even born not a single child we have has ever called the church at that is church on a Sunday without theand somebody saved at that time praise His Holy Name I will tell the story but in one Sunday we had 4149 hundred and so I 5195 see for safe at First Baptist Church walk the aisle were dealt with one year lady we had thirty three hundred saved one Sunday one year the next year we had forty nine hundred and ninety some odd people saved me one Sunday testify for a minute I can pastor ten more years I can pastor ten more years have the same number people say for a year I've had the last ten years a little boy that used to walk sometimes bigots around here would have seen in his churches over 1 million people walked our receiving crisis there you go to Chicago today a great mass of humanity millions of people you look down as I do every week gonna fly in on that big city of Chicago any more than here you're going to see as we have heard so have we see Abraham made a covenant saw Abraham do you can find ten righteous people in the city of Sodom I'll spare the city I found the campus the to righteousness is in the Bible the imputed that salvation practical that separation God said you find me ten people are saved and separated in Sodom and I will destroy the city the fire of brimstone will not be borrowed from Hell itself and rained down on the city and destroy the city if you can find me ten righteous - righteous people in Sodom to destroy Sodom the queerest destroyed when their feud Abraham the adopted son of the father of the faithful reared in the best home of his generation carried a Scorpio Bible went to Pastor school every year and the soul winning conference if Locke had won nine other people to Jesus and got him to quit watching the movies and and the soap operas and listen to rock music and wear decent clothes and living like the own allele then Sodom would have been spared now let's put that down to verify if God never changes that means the same percentage of people in America because God to withhold his hand rajendra from our nation I do not know the population of Sodom people that I've talked to they're off to know something about it say between ten thousand a hundred thousand people Sodom had 10,000 people population and if God would spare America with the same ratio God would spare America for two hundred forty thousand majesty away thousand people that means that each one of us to get two hundred and forty and sanctified God to look down and say I'll let your nation live another generation if everybody in this room there's fun it would say by a crack I'm sorry amen I'll get my 240 people saved and I'll get it out of the hill holes and get it now that I can join and take the cigarettes out of their mouths and get them out of Hollywood and get Hollywood out of him and get him to straighten up and live right and tie and spray and other themselves and seek God's face and turn from their wicked ways God said I'll let America live for another generation it's in your hands it's up to you but I suppose that sort of had a hundred the same ratio to America but mean God didn't spare America for 24 hours righteous people your newspaper reporters you better thank God for us we're the reason you have freedom of the press you better thank God for us there's a God in heaven and that God would not always chide with man and God's wrath gonna fall and the only thing that's keeping the wrath of God for falling on America is the crowd you rat me guess [Applause] I'm saying America could respect I didn't say about America you're saying I'm saying God could withhold his hand of judgment America if the people in this room could leave this place and each of us get 240 people saved and train them and disciple them to be clean and decent and separated people God could save this nation we've heard without years our fathers
