[Music] welcomes you by way of the videotape ministry as you join us in Chattanooga Tennessee for the South wide Baptist Fellowship held October 7th 8th and 9th 1985 for 30 years South wide Baptist Fellowship has been the yearly focus for thousands of Christians Christians who love good music and are dedicated to the fundamentals of the faith now let's join the preaching service at the great Highland Park Baptist Church the hardest thing for me to do is to know what to do and folks stand and clap you don't know whether to you like that or I like that alright I really I really don't like standing ovations I had to test them I don't like a lot of fanfare my people I don't like for them to give me gifts publicly and I just don't lack standing ovations the only thing I dislike more than a standing ovation is not to get a standing ovation I was thinking while ago i've brought over a hundred and fifty messages at the Holland Park Baptist Church through these years the first message I brought was an afternoon message at the South white Baptist Fellowship in 1956 that's and I've I have brought I think this is my twenty-fifth message at a South white fellowship I spoke one time four times and occasion twice but I always anticipate being here and this is as dr. Sackler said this is my crowd now I always get along for several days before I speak at South wide spend some time alone usually a couple of days fasting praying and preparing I did that this time came with the message that I felt I was supposed to preach and then in the motel room last night God spoke to my heart and told me as definitely as I has ever told me anything that I was forced to change my message and preached another one but I had a problem the message and all of the notes about it were in a Bible I did not bring I called my secretary this morning we had this Bible flown down today they call it VIP Freight and cost me forty five dollars I'd like that added to my expense account if I could please and $45 just to get this Bible here in which I have the notes and this and the scriptures mark for the message tonight I'm glad once again to be in the great Holland Park Baptist Church led for many years by two of the greatest men alive and of course pastored for those many years but ugly roberson are all all of us look to him as the hero and the captain of all of what we stand for and then of course to be here at the most prayed for church in the last years old and preaching behind the pulpit pastored by the most prayed for preacher in America right now no doubt about that and so thank you so much open your Bibles please to the book of Ezra chapter 3 the book of Ezra chapter 3 verse number 10 Ezra chapter 3 verse number 10 dr. Sankar almost stole my thunder tonight he did steal my lightning but he almost stole my thunder and I'd like to say this I think well I believe everything you said everything you said I I think we ought not to forget that we're Baptist I think we all remember it it's important and I think it was so timely and tonight I feel even more convinced that I'm supposed to bring this message because it's a little bit along the line of dr. cyclers and ezra chapter 3 and verse 10 and when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the Lord they set up they set the priests in their apparel with trumpets and that Evite's the sons of Asaph with cymbals to praise the Lord after the ordinance of the King David in Israel and they sang together by course and praising and giving thanks unto the Lord because he is good for his mercy endureth forever toward Israel and all the people shouted with a great shout when they praise the Lord because the foundation of the house of God was laid but many of the Levites priests and Levites and chief of the fathers who were ancient men like the two that are speaking on the program tonight they're ancient men that had seen the first house or the first temple when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes wept with a loud voice and many shouted for joy so the people could not discern the noise of the shout of the the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people for the people shouted with a loud short and I'll shout and the noise was heard afar off I want to speak tonight on the subject the young people shouted while the old people wept the young people shouted while the old people with our Heavenly Father I pray tonight that you do something real in this building I pray you to add a few days to fundamentalism tonight help us to hold what we have and have had a little longer because we've come thank you for the amazing reminders that dr. cycler gave us and now do thou meet with us and our special and real way in Jesus name Amen no man traveled alone highway he came to the evening cold and gray to a chasm vast and deep and wide through which was flowing a sullen tide the old man crossed in the Twilight dim for that sullen stream had no fear for him but he paused as he beats the other side and built a bridge suspend the tide good friends said a fellow traveler near you're wasting your time in building here your journey will end with the ending of day and you must never again pass this wave why pause you had even tired to build a bridge suspend the tide good friend said the old man lifting his head there cometh after me he said our youth who also must pass this way he too must cross and the ending of day he too must pass in the twilight dim dear friend I'm building this bridge for him it was a great day in the life of God's people for seventy years or more they had been in bondage to the Babylonians and those who conquered the Babylonians now they're returned a little group of Israelites returned and they've laid the foundation for the temple a heap of huddled stones is all that was left the first temple fort had been destroyed and now a God's people returned a little a little remnant of people and they vow to rebuild at the temple or to build a new temple the temple of Oz rouble an impossible dream is being fulfilled the foundation has been laid their joy spilt into shouts and yet midst the shouts I hear some sobs mr. the shouts of joy I hear some sobs of sorrow you see so older people were there who had seen the first temple they had seen that a magnificent temple of Solomon that made zero volts temple look sort insignificant they had seen that Temple of Solomon that cost nearly five billion dollars one hundred and fifty thousand men it took to Hugh and Terry the stone 30,000 sent to Lebanon for the Cedars for the first temple in 775 hundred for money and overseers you see they looked at this smaller less immense temple being built by Google and they remembered the old days of Solomon's Temple they recall the porch upheld by the mighty pillars the delicate carving of cherubim they recalled the pillars of solid marble the lovely lily work that adorned that temple they recalled the massive stone foundation and the exquisite ornaments may recall the Cedars of Lebanon and the interior of pure gold they recalled the unbelievable size of the first temple and the figures of palm trees that made it lovelier to their eyes they recalled the five billion dollar cost and yet the ornate flowers and elaborate utensils that were in the first temple they recall the high and lovely art and the precious stones gleaming midst the gold the high and mighty walls and the Tyrian tapestry on every side you see the old crowd had seen too much to rejoice with the young crowd about the newfangled temple the new crowd never seen the old temple they'd never seen the glory of the old building they'd never seen the magnificence of the old dwelling place for the Shekinah and they had not seen it and so in this new temple was a I was founded or the foundation was laid the shouts of joy echoed and reverberated as the young folks rejoiced because of the new temples foundation but the old people remembering what the old temple had been they wept and they mourned you see they've seen too much they had seen the whole of Holy's with its Shekinah they had known what it was to have the Ark of the Covenant Aaron's rod that budded the tablets of stone the golden pot of manna all of these things they knew about but now they in this new Temple it did not appeal to them like the old temple and as the young people shouted the old people cried wept and mourned you know what dr. site they were saying a while ago is there a few of us who've lived a few years and he and I collectively have 85 years of preaching behind us I preached this summer my 42,500 sermon as a Baptist preacher and I am we've seen we've seen the old days and and and and the fundamentalism of yesterday you know sometimes we have a little harder time getting excited about some things that are going on than you younger folks do you know we you'll have to put up with us we're not gonna be here for long we're gonna be gone it just just real quick like and you won't have to hear us stand up here saying the old days the old days the old days I remember when I was a kid I walk 240 miles to school every morning and through 10 feet of snow I'm coming home as 260 miles and 15 feet of snow you won't have to put up with us much longer but as long as you got us here you're gonna have to hear about the old days I'll guarantee of assured I'm a little fashioned I know when it comes to religion and God many think I'm painfully slow since I Walker my fathers have trod I believe in repentance from sin and that Jesus within us must well I believe that if Heaven would win we must flee from the terrors of hell I'm a little fashioned I know but God's peace has a hole in my soul and I'm telling wherever I go that Jesus is saving and keeping me in hold now tonight I'm gonna make you mad at me and if you knew what if you saw my outline you'd already walked out before now but I just won't tell you some things we older folks don't get excited about like you younger folks do you know when we see Christian celebrities being interviewed by Playboy magazine we are a little hard time getting excited about that I mean we we see a Pat Boone with testifying about how much Jesus means to him after you sung at a nightclub on Saturday night away we just have a little hard time getting excited about that I mean I know you're younger folks you shout and so there's a great move of God going on well we just don't see it that way a great deal and you'll forgive us while you were shouting we're we're weeping I am we you see we remember too much we remember when fundamentalists were fundamentalists capital F captain you capital in capital whatever else follows huh that's one of the marks of the all time fundamentalist you didn't know how to spell it but I mean we we've seen too much to see we remember when God's men used to hug with leather lungs and the power of God and the Saudis trail and the mortars bits and the tint campaigns and the altar calls remember when fundamentalism was old-fashioned he they had casting out the sick and raised in the devil's every Sunday morning every Sunday night every Wednesday night you see for you you you won't have to put up with us too much longer just a sight right we've probably gone this time next year and you won't have to put up with us anymore but we we have a hard time getting excited with you young folks when Baptist preachers have an audience with the Pope I mean that just doesn't move us a great deal I mean we you see we recall today when the Pope wasn't was the Vicar of hell and you you'll have to forgive us we have not yet we had not yet gotten the place where we want to kiss this toe now we'd like to have a shot we'd like to have a shot at his toe but a kiss is not what we have in mind that's me hi so well thank God for Pope he's against abortion he's always been forgetting all the Catholics he can get always has been I mean see some of us recall when the Catholic Church was the mother of harlots and the Pope was the false prophet don't you see and and you you have a hard time but don't get upset with us we're all we're senile we we we has bends we're stuff we're not up to snuff and up to date but put up with it be nice to us we're all people and we'll be gone after a while but I just want to save it while you rejoice in the fact that Baptist preachers are having audience with the Pope we just rather have an audience with your old prayin grandma who praises down the power of God for us while we preach on Sunday you see while these younger people shouted boy oh boy we have a new temple the older people remember the old temple and you'll forgive us but we have an awful hard time shouting with young folks when the when the long-haired hippies masquerade as Christians we have a little hard time with that you say I knew you would preach on long hair before you got through and I didn't want to disappoint you and that's why I mentioned early in the sermon you see we remember when Christians got men misty men got haircuts and we have awful hard time rejoice it now we should I know and we're gonna do better but but no we're not gonna do better but but but the honest truth is we remember you see but we haven't changed you've changed you checked your camp pictures your youth kept pictures twenty-five years ago and you'll find that we're just practicing what you used to preach that's all you know we have a little hard time and and and we're we're old and and and and absent-minded but those of us have been around a while we have a hard time when so-called fundamentalist share platforms with Mormons and Catholics and canna lights and Munez we have an awful hard time about that and it will what you see we we we used to think that Mormons were cultist and and the Catholicism was a mother of harlots and the Pope was the false prophet then and and the Southern Baptist Convention was the beast out of the sea I mean we we we we just don't we win it up with it we haven't had the privilege to go to these schools that are liberal like you have and we're not up with it but they something we have an awful hard time rejoicing about this synthetic move of God that's going on that has a Bible that's not inspired and a halter without an altar call and a salvation without reality and without the new birth without regeneration I'm simply saying faith of our fathers living still in spite of Dungeon fire and sword yea though our hearts beat high with joy they stand on his glorious word we just have a little hard time that's all but we'll pass off the scene after a while now let me just go a little further we're all settlers and I'm just gonna unload the whole wagon tonight I am I brought it with me and I don't take it back home we just have a little hard time and we'll get over it and we'll be passed off the scene and you want to put up with us after a while but we have a little hard time seeing Christian ladies expose their thighs in public it's sort of unusual for us for for fundamental Baptists to go on mixed bathing parties now you say priests here there's nothing wrong with exposing a woman exposure if I'm suddenly now you ladies may think that but you mean no think that unless something wrong with you you said doesn't affect me then go to a doctor you got problems you sound like you're preaching I'm not fixing in enthuse with your living either let me tell you something brother there was a day when fundamentalism met old-fashioned hell-raising barnstormin when the rattling single pullin soul-winning passed on it hell fire them stone heaven papa Nixon heading racing and we lose that we lose our right to exist now you laugh about me you shout about all this newfangled Liberty we have and so forth but some of us some of us all fellas we have an awful hard time the jaw sing with you you know I'm glad dr. Sattler said what he said a while ago in fact everything he said just got me worked up we have an awful our town dot joining the Bible of the Month Club I mean I'm hey we just we just thought we didn't know - just a few years ago Mama's Bible wasn't so we always thought Mama's Bible so-and-so leads you you met a scholar there's not one single Dan preacher in this room tonight but what when you left for college you thought mama's Bible was the Word of God and you got to college you met a scholar and that scholar told you Mama's Bible is not the Word of God but my mom was a greater scholar than all the professors that house Anderson College put together a lot more to do it's just just just get the Moffitt's translation and power on top of it the good speed and the bad speed translation and put on top of it the good news for modern men and put on top of that the Living Bible and put on top about the revised King James and put on top of that the new skull for you and and and put underneath all of that some kindling wood and set it on fire and get back to Mamas Bible Mama's Bible you say you trying to divide the south fellowship no I'm not trying to straighten out the South white fellowship I hold in my hand the not the word of God if I didn't think I did I would not walk up here and preach I would not do it no way in the world so how you're exhausted about the new Scofield in the new New King James your shouting is mingling with our tears because we remember the old one while v's while these men men and women can't come back to reveal the new temple while they shouted because the foundation was laid in the memory and minds and hearts of those over ancient people who had seen the first temple they said this is fine but there's something missing we have too many memories we have too much in our minds and hearts to remember and they wept as the younger people rejoiced forgive us for being the way we are but this is the way we are andum and we have a little hard time joining your rejoicing about the contemporary music of today little hard time I mean to us rock music is rock music whether it's even didier let's just did he it's rock music we have a little hard time do you see you don't forgive us but let me tell you the songs we like this is ridiculous I'm ashamed to admit it because you're young folks you won't even know them but you know it's we lack such old songs as majestic sweetness sets enthroned upon the saviours brow you don't even know that you're too busy have a little talk with Jesus letters tell him all about our travel [Applause] what happened to come thou fount of every blessing tune my heart to sing thy praise streams of Mercy never ceasing call for songs of loudest praise o to grace how great a debtor daily I'm constrained to be let thy goodness like a fetter bind my wandering heart to thee prone to wander lord I feel it prone to leave the god I love here's my heart O take and seal it seal it for thy courts above whatever happened to brethren we have met whatever happened the river we've met to worship and adore the Lord our God what will happen to the old songs how firm a foundation he Saints of the Lord almost persuaded the old rugged cross whatever happened to abide with me fast Falls Eventide and while you little folks are singing your little ditties with a tape of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir behind you some were some of us older folks happen remember the days when godless spirit fills soul always stood up with godless spirit fill the companies and they sang Amazing Grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me now I know where antiquated and I know where outdated but that's why we're not rejoicing with you that's why we we proud you shall we also have a little hard time join in your shouting in this new temple in this no invitation type evangelism it's coming out of California done gone and said it henna yeah a little tired of Baptist preachers going out to somebody it's not about this preacher and setne and some little scooter the prophets and being taught not to give an altar call and not to give an invitation and forget the mourners bench and take Baptist off your name and pastor off your title I like the word Baptist I happen to like the word pastor have the like an altar call I happen the law the mourners bench and this institution the South white Baptist Fellowship was built on everything that's been preached on this pulpit tonight we can't have our colleges and keep our old time gospel faith and practice let's close the colleges and get back to the mourners bench in the altar call and the brush Arbor please forgive me I feel so old tonight see I'm pretty old I can a call I go back to Andy Robertson with Southern Baptist so was Jack Isles and so was Bob gray Bob Jones the Methodists and John rice believed in the signs of the times I go back a long ways I go back so far I can recall when proper grammar was a sign of the apostasy and having carpet was a compromise the church organ came from the mother of harlots and the church kitchen was the beast of Daniel - I can recall what I pants didn't match our coats and I are socks didn't match either each other chandelier was a French actor divorce was the dirty word pants were only worn by men and fallen women my carpet was sawdust our walls were canvas our chandeliers were 50 watt light bulbs my participles were dangled I infinities were split our jaren's were hung our spirituality was measured by the by the volume of our preaching our toilets were at the end of the pathway instead of the end of the hallway our church signs were lettered babt ist a piano was a finer and to have it tuned was to put all the strings back inside the wood but you know we have a little hard time some of us old-timers have a little hard time shouting with you folks about these evangelists that look like the hippies resurrected and the Beatles Rhian Kearney you see we we live too long we remember the old leather long evangelists please forgive us I'll be through here in an hour - and I'm sure tomorrow you'll have some younger man on the program the old dr. Stephens Charles Stevens lived to be up in his 19 sunny little ball walked up to him one day and said dr. Stevens was you in art why he said of course not son he said why didn't you drown the end [Applause] you see some of us can't rejoice when an evangelist gets up on nationwide television and says he believes in hell but he doesn't know whether it has fire or not while you rejoice that he's preaching the gospel we weep the cause he doesn't believe the Bible nice preaching in Philadelphia to Sunday School convention several years ago speaker before me said this he said we do not know that hell has fire he says hell me maybe being marooned on some island somewhere without God we do not know that hell has fire hell maybe floating in space godless without God somewhere in space will not know that he'll has fire kept on saying it I don't mean to be unkind but I can be unkind and not even mean to be unkind I stood and said I enjoyed the message on we do not know that hill has fire but I said I've got some news from my brother I can tell him how you find out he was sitting around here he said how I said get your Bible you know all dr. Bob Johnson used to say we need ever pulpit in America to preach about three months on Hellfire and brimstone throughout three straight miners years ago as pastor a little country church we used to have all-night prayer meetings on Saturday night that's one reason why I think the old timers have a little hard time talking about a little talk with Jesus we just have all night prayer meeting had an old lady named Jim mrs. Jim Ford with 240 pounds mrs. Ford always was there at all night prayer meeting never said denied I don't mean we we prayed 30 minutes and drank coffee and pray 15 minutes and eight doughnuts I mean we prayed all night long and she called while she prayed like I'm on a phone used to she called while she prayed she had an unsaved husband 52 years of AIDS named Jim Jim Ford was his name mrs. Ford used to pray through the night oh Jesus oh Jesus Jim should crawl and pray Saturday night after certain that all night long she'd pray once one Christmas night just for Christmas team on Sunday Christmas night she didn't even know Jim was there but Jim snuck in the back door and set on the back rutland on the back row back in the corner mrs. Ford was sitting over here she didn't know Jim was there all night the night before Christmas Eve she'd pray to Lord Jesus save Jim saves him and that night I preached on hell and right about two thirds into my sermon old Jim Ford stood up back in the back end sedation he came running down the aisle and got saved when and this is for didn't even know he was there she looked down and saw him at the altar getting to say if she came unscrewed she stood up and she started dancing down the aisle like that she took she stopped at every person at the end of every aisle and hugged him and lifted up and said pray thank you Jesus for saving Jim she came on the platform she came up to me I weighed 140 pounds she with a hundred pounds more than I she took me like a bottle of medicine and shook me up and down thank you Jesus for say you see I mean those of us who live longer to see that kind of Christianity we have a hard time getting excited about the religious emphasis weeks you quite frankly these seminars don't do much for us either sometimes some shouted they hadn't lived long enough to see the old we have a little hard time getting used to son of schoolteachers who watch the soap operas in the afternoon cause we remember Mama's old Bible that she read during the afternoon time we have a hard time hearing about the power of positive thinking awful hard time our possibility thinking awful hard time awful hard time [Applause] this organization was built on PC and the fundamental churches in America are built on preaching I'm not opposed to Christian movies were opposed to him at LED McLaughlin on Sunday morning and said my clock on Sunday night I'm not opposed to Christian drama but I'm opposed to it at lemma clock on Sunday morning and seven o'clock on Sunday night you know those of us who are old settlers remember the old coming-out parties fees to have dr. Roberson he didn't come out for you for several years and as soon as he came out then he started talking about piles had the courage he had come out well he and I both had tremendous courage we both had enough courage to get voted out but you don't let an old man reminisce we we remember when independent baptist didn't didn't they didn't leave the bondage of Egypt and go out in the wilderness and build another Egypt so they could operate it sometimes I wonder if independent Baptists are against bondage or against our being in bondage those who want slaves have now become Pharaohs in 1955 56 my church was children the church of the year of all the 3,500 churches and the Texas Baptist Convention I was chosen the pastor of the year I was still in my 20s I've chosen the pastor of the year I preached that year at the state's understoo Convention to 5,000 people at the First Baptist Church of Abilene I preached at the state training in Convention at the First Baptist Church to Tyler I preached at the state convention to 7,000 people at the Coliseum in San Antonio I'm talk about that Baptists they convention I have been invited by dr. King to speak at the Southern Baptist Convention and I was still in my 20s at the Southern Baptist Convention in Kansas City Missouri before ten twelve thousand people one morning I got a call and I the big fella I mean the fella that bothers bothers all the churches he said brother Hiles we have some leaders that like to meet with you Southern Baptist leaders like to meet with you to guest in cafeteria today for lunch I said or I'll be there we got our soup and we got our okra and turnip greens and squash and other Bible foods and and iced tea and coffee and and we were we sat down around the table about eight of us and the fellow said now brother mr. bill house before we eat Ramez well tell you why we're here we have some questions ask you is it true that you have had Lee Roberson preach for you I said it's true he said is it true that you've had or are having John Rice preach for you I said it's true he said is it true that you have you are scheduled to speak for Lester roll-off under his big tip in Corpus Christi Texas I said it's true see it wasn't reading and writing and rithmetic were not the 3 R's that got me in trouble his rice roll off and Roberson got me in trouble and he pushed this table chair back to the table and said well mr. Hiles let's just be frank if you speak for brother Olaf and if you continue to have rice and Roberson you have spoken for your last time at a Southern Baptist meeting it started in the top of my head this burning sensation came down to my face and flesh my neck in my shoulders and my naughty chest and my my buddy and my legs and out my arms and out my fingers and I I stood up and I hit the table and said brother I'm not for sale [Applause] Coffee baptized denominational leaders spaghetti infiltrated denominational toupees we've seen too much that's why this little compromise Danny reticulan back-scratching penny-pinching nickle dipping sauce open pink tea lemonade pussyfoot and preaching doesn't impress us very much we have a little hard time getting excited I went to Haman found out after I got there the church had some kind of affiliation with American Baptist Convention after I've been there for several months they decided that they spent several months trying to get me and then several months trying to get rid of me we had one night set aside after the Bible study on Wednesday night for questions and answers right before the meeting that night the state executive secretary and his sidekick came and I saw them as they walked in I walked up and called her by name and I said fellas I know why you're here you're here to cause trouble but I said what goes on at this church is none of your business but dr. Sattler said so well a while ago all I'm doing is I'm saying sort in an ugly way what he said in a sweet way and I said no while you're here I said if you're here to study the Bible with us you're welcome but I said it's none of your business what goes on at First Baptist Church of Hammond and I said if you as much as stand up in the meeting tonight I'm getting four of my men to for each of your arms and legs we're gonna go one and a-two and a-three and throw you out on your bottom own Sibley Street and I said if you don't believe it you just stand up I hope you do they set there to 11:15 that night they didn't even stand up for the singing well and there's some folks behind that nice suit that that great man dr. Sattler wore while ago and behind that sweet digs Christian a giant of God that he is there's some scars down here on his old spiritual body and bound behind dr. Robertson's polished exterior and it's amazing a presence down behind it there are some scars they haven't been inflicted in the battles must I be carried to the skies on flowery beds of ease or others fought to win the prize and sail through bloody seas no I'm a spy if I would gain increase my courage Lord I'll bear the tall in to the pain supported by thy word I will tell you something night you are as obligated to defend right and an attack wrong in the South white Baptist Fellowship as we were in the Southern Baptist Convention you'll forgive us for having a little hard time getting excited about some things we've lived too long we we have a hard time getting excited about seeing and hearing glamorized and that Lamb arising of Christianity on television where females are painted up more than Hollywood starlets are how high your is your Seng and the Gospels getting out we're crying because the devil is getting in forgive us we just have a hard time getting used to saying to people that come down the front have a seat and sign a card cause we remember the old days but instead have a knee and get born again you see you won't like this but I've come this far by faith we can recall when baptist ecologist didn't give the enemy a chance to give his side [Applause] and it'll be a cold day where the Boogerman alleles before somebody stands up at house Edison College and speaks about evolution pro evolution listen I got enough graced your courage to say it you got enough grace to shake your head leave a cry see for the Lord I'm not mad at anybody I listen we have fought through these years of the older fellows the purity of fundamentalism now let's fight to keep it well that's good [Applause] you see we remember safar back or fundamental Baptist wouldn't be interviewed on charismatic TV programs [Applause] we have a hard time too jostling with you over the opportunity we can recall back yonder when you 890 we can recall back yonder when Wheaton College wouldn't have had a Catholic speak for commencement and why are you rejoicing about the ecumenical progress we're crying about the carbonizing pussyfooting we can recall far back when Christian women thought er a men earned run average instead about fighting for the now organization trying to get Christian Liberty for Christian women their home with the Blessed Word of God teaching and preaching teaching the Word of God and praying with their children we have a hard time rejoicing over the modern preaching when you remember the tear stained eye as it used to be on the cheeks of God's men we've seen the old mourners bench campaigns we've seen the old altar calls we've seen God's men horse on Monday morning because they poured out their souls on Sunday we felt the heartbeat of fundamentalism we remember when the old-line denominational people we can't we have a hard time rejoicing not some of you who dipped your sails that dr. Sattler mentioned a while ago and john the local Ministerial Association pastor the First Methodist Church of Hammond called me on the phone said Reverend house we'd like to bring a committee down on some Sunday morning our Sunday school is going down I just cried and cried about that his our Sunday schools going down he said could we bring a committee down some Sunday morning and would you and/or some of your leaders take us through your Sunday school and show us how to do it I said that all depends he said depends on what I said do you believe the Bible is the Word of God word for word he said no I don't I said do you believe that Jesus is virgin born he said nor don't I said you believe in the sinless life and vicarious death of Jesus he said nor don't I said you believe the bodily resurrection of Jesus he said nor don't he said do you want to show us through your Sunday school I said no I don't [Applause] he said you have a bad spirit nice that I aim to keep a bad spirit about folks that say that my Savior is the illegitimate child of a whoremonger and while I'm preaching tonight here's four fundamental preachers preach 35 years ago same thing we have a little hard time to jossen with you youngsters pant wearing female sunday school teachers our dial of Prayer Christianity the exaltation of the RSV and even the re s the Christian schools letting girls play basketball in shorts and then inviting other Christian schools to come over to your gymnasium and so there are even public school so their girls can do a striptease at halftime for you dr. Bob gray says don't just set their fee or something [Applause] we just have a little hard time have mercy on us we know our tribe is passing off the scene and we know that our strong stand is caused by senility we understand that put up with us just a while longer and every once in a while put one of us on the program you make us feel a lot better and who knows you might catch the truth yourself but we were going after a while we know we're not here for long sylars got one foot in the grave I've got one foot in the grave other ones slidin we were about gone put up with us I'll tell you what we do have and no neither none of us has an axe to grind we just remember we'll just remember I remember how she opened the book ever ever night for the light of a kerosene lamp and the heat of a wood stove and said son this is the Word of God the Bible is the Word of God mama daddy was out drunk in a tavern somewhere all night long tears had fall down her face off her face and she'd says son the Bible's the Word of God see it and I had to say thrice the Bible's the Word of God I just remember the old leather long preacher I had who could spit for oars back from behind a pulpit while he prays we just remember the old sawdust and we remember the brush arbors and the tents and though I've been office it's a turistic tonight some Elvis is just sorta brokenhearted I'm a little fashioned I know when it comes to religion in God many think I'm painfully slow since I Walker my father subtract but I believe in repentance from sin and that Jesus within us mister well I believe that if Heaven would win we must flee from the terrors of hell and an old fashioned I know that God's peace has a home in my soul and I'm telling wherever I go that Jesus is saving and keeping the whole and what the speaker before me was saying and what I'm saying give me that old-time religion give me that old-time religion give me that all Asian it's good enough for me [Applause] you
