this is Nick with logos by Nick comm and in today's tutorial I'll be using Inkscape to show you how you can create this simple flat style mobile device graphic with what appears to be layered screens coming above the phone so let me minimize this and get started here at Inkscape at any point in this tutorial you could look down at the bottom left hand side of my screen to see which mouse clicks and keystrokes I'm using and if you'd like to know how you can make an escape appear darkened with these custom icons a link to that information will be in the description of the video so the first thing we want to do is make sure that the view is set to custom and then we'll zoom in at 1 to 1 and we'll open up the align and distribute menu with that button up top and we'll want last selected chosen from that drop-down and then we'll open up the Edit objects colors gradients and Stroke menu so the first thing we want to do is create a rectangle so let's grab the squares and rectangles tool and I'm going to click and drag on the canvas to create a rectangle about the width and height of what a mobile device would be something like that's pretty good and I'll bring the opacity of this down in half roughly in half doesn't have to be exactly 50 it could be 54 or whatever and once we've done that I'm going to take this note up top here in the top right corner and bring that down a little bit just to give this rounded corners and I'm going to take this other node at the top of the other node up here up top bring that all the way to the left as far as it'll let you go we'll bring that down a little bit so it has like a rounded top and flat sides like that now what I'm going to do is go back to the select tool I'm going to right click that and go to duplicate and I'll turn that one red and I'll take this top arrow and just scale this down about that much take this bottom arrow scale that up about that much and let's go back to the squares and rectangles tool and click on this little corner up here just to give that sharp corners like that now I'll go back to the Select tool I'm just going to bring this down a little more bring that up want it to be about that size once we have it set like that you could hold shift and click on the black rectangle beneath it and make sure it's centered on the horizontal axis like and then what we could do is we could bring the opacity of it all the way up and what I'm going to do now is I'm going to click off of the graphic deselect everything I'm going to click on just this black shape right here and I'm going to make this a very light shade of grey maybe a five percent gray now maybe not 5 goes 7 or 10 that's pretty good I'll go with 10 percent gray and if you hover your cursor over the shade they'll tell you which percentage it is like that so I'm going to leave that how that is going to click on this red shape I'm going to make this a darker shade of grey maybe 80% gray that's pretty good now what I do now is going to put a little circle down here to represent the home button as you see here on the thumbnail so I'll grab the circles and ellipses tool and I'm going to hold ctrl and shift and click and drag to create a little circle like that that's pretty good go to the Select tool position this right about there I'll hold shift and click on the gray shape beneath it make sure it's centered on the vertical axis and then click off the deselect so I want to do now is I want to take that circle I want to make it the same shade that this light gray is so I believe I used 10% but instead of leaving at that shade I'm going to make it a little darker so I'm going to come over to the fill tab and under the HSL tab I'm going to take the L column and slide that to the left a little bit to make that a little darker that's a pretty good shade right there and up here I'm going to put the little speaker little speaker part actually I'm actually no we don't even need to create that when I'm going to be able to see it once we're done so we could scratch that so what what I do now is I'm going to click and drag over all of this and let me just make sure it's all converted to a path we'll go to path objective path and I'll click on it to get the rotation handles and what I'm going to do is I'm going to hold ctrl on the keyboard and take this this the center arrow up top and slide that to the right two steps so I don't click on that and go one to two steps and then I'm going to hold ctrl long I take this corner arrow up here and rotate this downward two steps so one two like that so we now have the phone sitting flat like that and what we can do is click off that to deselect everything and I'm going to take this light great this light great shape right here I'm going to duplicate that by hitting control D on the keyboard and I'll just hold ctrl and just click and drag this down about that much and then I'll lower that to the bottom with the button that says lower selection to the bottom and I'm going to make this the same shade of gray that this home button is so I'm going to grab the dropper which is over here or you can just press f7 on the keyboard to get the dropper and I'm just going to click on that make that the same shade of grey that is now we'll go back to the Select tool and this is going to be kind of like a Bethel I guess you can call it the the side of the phone so we have to do now is close up these side gaps right here so let's click off of that to deselect everything I'm going to turn on this green squiggly line up here that says snap the pads I'll turn that on I'll go to the Bezier pen which is over here where you just press B on the keyboard and I'm going to zoom in over this left corner right here so I'm going to press B plus on the keyboard a few times move over here and I'm pressing down the mouse button the mouse wheel and moving the mouse around to pan the page so I'm going to take this cursor and snap it to the far left of this corner right here and click and then hold ctrl and bring the line straight up until it snaps to the left corner of that other gray shape and then click and we can let go of control and just finish the shape up going inside of the gray area bring it back to the starting point go back to the Select tool and hold shift and click on the darker gray shape and go to path Union then I come over here and do the same thing so let's go back to the bezzie a pen you just press B on the keyboard I'm going to snap to this far right corner right here click hold control and bring that up until it snaps and click make let go control and finish this up going through the gray space back to the starting point go back to the Select tool hold shift and click on the dark gray shape and go to path Union and now we could turn off the snap to paths we're done with that I'll press 1 on the keyboard to zoom back out so I percent and I'll click off of that deselect everything so we have the phone graphic now we just have to create these little screen graphics here I have like a news a news page and then kind of like a video page so do that I'm going to click on this dark grey shape here this is almost black shape and I'm just going to duplicate that by hitting ctrl D and take that duplicated copy you bring it over here and I click on it again to get the rotation handles I'm going to hold ctrl and grab this bottom right arrow and rotate this counterclockwise two steps so hold ctrl and go one two and then either hold ctrl and take this Center arrow right here and just wrote slide that over two steps to the left so one two so we're back we're back to this starting position that we originally had in it so let's now use that to create kind of like a newsfeed type of graphic so I'm going to take this I'm going to make this a light shade of grey I'm going to make this maybe five percent gray and then I'll duplicate that right click go to duplicate and I'm going to make this a dark shade of blue I'm going to use this shade down here maybe something like that to c5 a a zero that's pretty good let me click on this again to get back to the scaling handles and I'll take this arrow down here at the bottom and just bring that all the way up to there that's pretty good then I'll duplicate that by hitting ctrl D on the keyboard hold shift click on the gray box and we're going to align the bottom edges so we have it at the bottom as well then we can click off with the deselect and let's now click on just this blue shape and take this top arrow and bring that down a little bit it doesn't have to be as big as the other one is if you notice here I kind of have like a search box going inside of there so we're going to create that now let's grab this squares and rectangles tool and just click and drag to create a rectangle like that and this is so it's almost looking like an ellipse let's make that a sharp corners and then we could just take this note up here and bring that down as far as it'll let you go and I'll take the L under the HSL tab I'll take the L column and slide that to the right to make later go back to the select tool hold shift and click on the dark blue header up top there Center it on the vertical and horizontal axis like that and then click off with the deselect what I'm going to do now is going to create another rectangle so we're go to the squares and rectangles tool click and drag in here to create another rectangle like that I'm going to give that sharp corners and I'm going to make this one a lighter shade of blue actually a different shade maybe something like this that's pretty good go back to the Select tool I'm going to hold shift and click on the grey box and with those both selected I just want to make sure this is centered on the vertical axis like that and then click off to deselect everything and I click on just this box right here and convert that to a path I'll go to path object to path and then I'm going to duplicate this by hitting ctrl D hold ctrl on the keyboard and click and drag this down to about here and out of these I'm going to create I'm going to create these little grey lines that look like I guess text so I'm going to take this bottom arrow and bring that up about that much I'll take this right arrow on the right side and bring that in about that much now come back down here to the color picker I want to make this a darker shade of grey something like that's pretty good and then I'll right click that and go to duplicate and then hold shift and click on the light blue box right there and just make sure it's aligned on the right side so we'll click the line right sides click off of it to deselect everything and then click on just this rectangle on the right and I'm going to take this arrow on the left side and bring that in about that much so it looks like two different lines of text I'm going to bring that in a little more like that that's pretty good and I'm going to hold shift and click on the other grey line right there I'm going to group them together like that group and then I'm going to duplicate that by hitting ctrl D and hold ctrl and just move this down to here and I'm going to do that again ctrl D hold ctrl move it down to there ctrl D hold ctrl move it down to there we do this a few more times and that's pretty good what I want to do now is I'm going to hold shift and click on this blue stripe and click on all the other lines and then click on the light blue box right there and then click on the the dark blue stripe up top and with all of that selected where it's going to come down here to the distribute panel and click on the button that says make vertical gaps between objects equal just so everything's spaced out nice and even nice and evenly like that then we can click off of that to deselect everything and now I'm going to add some text in here that says news like you see here and I've news put in there even though you could only see the WS so I'm just gonna grab the create create text tool click on the canvas so you get the blinking cursor I'm just going to hit type in news and I'll go up here to the text editor the font I'm going to pick is a montserrat I'm going to use a heavy weight you can use any font you'd like I'm just using montserrat for this one it's a nice heavyweight font that I like to use close out of that come back to the Select tool I'm going to put this inside that rectangle right there I'm going to turn that white then hold shift and click on the blue rectangle and just make sure it's centered on the vertical and horizontal axis and then click off the deselect everything so what we want to do now is let's click on this very light very light grey rectangle in the background and just duplicate that hit control D and take that duplicated copy and just move this out of the way we're going to come back to that in a minute and you know what let me actually know it let's delete that press Delete on the keyboard list let's duplicate the whole thing click and drag over the whole thing ctrl D and you just move this off to the right like that and now we want to click and drag over this whole thing group it together and we're going to position it so it fits nicely over this thing so let's come back here click on it again to get the rotation handles hold ctrl take the top center arrow and move that to the right five two steps one two and then hold control take this top right corner arrow and rotate that clockwise two steps we're going to bring that noun 1 two and then I'm going to turn on the snap 2 cusp nodes which is up here now I'm going to grab the object down by this bottom corner down here and just grab that object and just snap it to the bottom corner as if it almost fits in the phone like that and then hold ctrl and just click and drag this up about that much that's pretty good the final step here is to create the video page so let's come back over here to this graphic we can take this line and delete that press Delete on the keyboard just click it and press Delete on the keyboard I could delete all of them except for the bottom two I'm going to delete the news text I'm going to take this blue rectangle and just take this bottom arrow and bring it down to make that bigger about that much now I'm going to make this a lighter shade of gray actually a darker shade maybe a 50% that's pretty good and I take this top blue stripe up here and then hold shift and click on the other blue stripe and we change these to red I'm going to use this shade of red down here the c83 737 that's alright pretty good we'll take this light shade blue rectangle up here this little search bar and make that a lighter shade of red that's pretty good and let's take this gray rectangle right click that and go to duplicate and make this a little darker by sliding this L column to the left a little bit and just take this top arrow I'll bring this down here this is going to be kind of like the video progress bar and I'm going to zoom in on this actually so let me press plus on the keyboard a few times oops press plus in the keyboard and I grab the squares and rectangles tool and just click and drag create a little rectangle like that turn that white go back to the Select tool hold shift click on this darker gray rectangle Center it on the vertical and horizontal axis click off with the deselect and we're going to put a little circle right there so come over to the circles and ellipses tool hold ctrl and shift and click and drag to create a perfectly round circle like that go to the select tool put this right about there hold shift click on the white line and just make sure it's centered on the horizontal axis like that we can click off deselect everything and what did I do now is I'm going to press going to create this little play button here in the center so let's grab the circles and ellipses tool again and hold ctrl and shift and click and drag to create another circle go back to the Select tool position this towards the center like that maybe I'll make this a little smaller you just hold ctrl and shift and click and drag to make it smaller or bigger and hold shift and click on the light gray box beneath it and just make sure it's centered on the vertical axis click off at the deselect and I'm going to take this circle and make it the same shade of dark grey that this is so we'll grab the dropper or just press f7 on the keyboard and just click on that portion right there and it'll make it the same shade and now we just going to create a little triangle to put in there so we'll come over to the stars and polygons tool and up here we want to have polygon selected we want corner set to 3 and then we want rounded and randomize both set to 0 and that'll give us the parameters to create a triangle so we could just hold ctrl and shift and click and drag to create our triangle create it like that that's pretty good go back to the Select tool I'm going to make this triangle the same shade of grey that this is so we'll grab the drop or just press f7 on the keyboard make that the same shade of grey go back to the Select tool hold shift click on the circle Center it on the vertical and horizontal axis click off of it to deselect I'm just going to hold ctrl and move this to the right a little bit hold ctrl and shift to scale it down position it like that that's pretty good we press 1 on the keyboard to zoom back out to 100% now let me just take another look at this and see what else we have to do I kind of have like a little profile picture and user name representation sort of right there so we can go ahead and create that let me zoom in on this press Plus in the keyboard plus in the keyboard a few times and I'm going to take this and just hold ctrl and move that down a little bit I'm going to hold shift and click the other one I'm going to move these both down a little bit grab the squares and rectangles tool hold ctrl and shift to create a square like that and we can give that sharp corners grab the Select tool put this somewhat between the two you know let's turn off the snap to custom nodes for now and then hold shift and click on this box and just make sure we have the left edges aligned so it lines up nicely to the left edges click and then just take this and just move that around like that and I'm going to make this a lighter shade of red then I'll take this line right here I'll ungroup that click off the deselect and then take just this line right here and I'll press ctrl D on the keyboard to duplicate that and put that up here and I'll grab the dropper which is f7 make that the same shade that that is go back to the Select tool hold shift click on the other box make sure it's centered on the horizontal axis press 1 on the keyboard to zoom back out to a hundred percent click and drag over all of it and group it together and let's size it up so it fits on there so what's with that selected click on it until you get the rotation handles if you click on click off click on you notice you get scaling handles rotation handles so we want the rotation handles hold ctrl move the center our to the right two steps one two and hold ctrl and take this corner arrow down two steps one two and then we'll turn the snap to custom nodes back on and again we're going to grab this object down here by this lower corner and snap it onto this lower corner down here and then turn off the snap to custom nodes hold ctrl and just move this graphic up about that much now we have one final step here which would be creating a little bit of a shadow beneath them so it creates a little bit of a separation because as it looks now kind of looks like it all just blends in together and it doesn't quite look right so to create that shadow let's take this let's take this object right here this of our video screen and we'll duplicate that by head control-d and will ungroup that let's click on group a few times to make sure everything's all the way on grouped and go to path Union now we'll just turn that black and lower that one step so it goes beneath the screen right there and then give that a black outline by holding shift and clicking on the color black and I'll give it an outline it may not be as big as this one but if you come over to the stroke style tab you'll get to control the size so as you see here I have it set to 100 because that's what I was previously using when I was creating this so 100 with works pretty good let me bring the opacity down a little more yeah that's pretty good and then we'll go to path stroke the path path break apart path Union and let me just bring the opacity down a little more it's a little much what I want to do now is take this news graphic and let's just make sure that's all converted to paths by going to path object to path and then duplicate it by hitting ctrl D and again we'll click ungroup a bunch of times just to ungroup all of it and go to path Union and then hold shift and click on the black shape and go to path intersection and now it fits nicely under there we're going to do the same thing we'll click on this newsfeed graphic hit ctrl D to duplicate it ungroup a bunch of times path Union make it black lower it down a couple of steps 1 2 3 so it goes beneath the newsfeed graphic and again a black outline hold shift click on the color black it should be at 100 bring the opacity down about that much go to path stroke the path break apart paths Union and then I'll click on this light gray shape down here click on that and duplicate that by hitting ctrl D and hold shift and click on the black large object we just created and go to path path intersection and I might actually bring the opacity down a little more now we can click and drag over the whole thing and group it together hold ctrl and shift and scale it up or down however you'd like and that's pretty much it we have created our little flat style a mobile device icon so if you have any questions let me know and as always thank you for watching
