- Today we see how IHOP
stacks up against Denny's. - Let's talk about that. (groovy electronic music) - Good Mythical Morning. - When I say pancakes, what's the first restaurant you think of? - If you thought IHOP, well
Denny's has a problem with that. In fact, back in 2017,
IHOP tweeted this flex. We are the pancake OG and
will be respected as such. - To which Denny's
threw some serious shade with this reply. Wait, what's OG mean, and then
posted their founded on date of 1953, five years before IHOP. - To which IHOP responded,
spoken like second place. Oh! - IHOP, more like I clap back. - Denny's, IHOP, two iconic
chain restaurant slash diners battling it out for the
respect they deserve as the one and only, the the
true restaurant slash diner OG. It's time for Food Feuds:
Denny's versus IHOP. - We're gonna taste signature
dishes from each restaurant head to head and rate 'em one to 10. In the end, the winner will
be crowned the absolute, uncontested, best breakfast skewing diner and OG pancake house of
all time, according to us, and will win a chance to
sponsor a GMM episode. - You know you want that. Let's dine. (upbeat Americana music) - We have to kick things
off with what these places are known for, throwing
every breakfast item at one plate and seeing what sticks, IE, the breakfast combos. - Hi. - Hey there. - My name is um... Danny's Denny. This is the grand slam,
you build it yourself. It's got bacon, eggs,
hash browns, sausage. - [Link] Sausage, yeah, okay. - Thanks for wearing the hair net. (crew laughs) - This way. Hello, how are you doing? - Hey there.
- My name is IHOP I Denny international
Danny, how we doing today? - Great. - I'm international so
what we have here for you is the breakfast sampler plate. We've got eggs, we've
got bacon, ham, sausage and we got hash browns, kartoffel, as we call it internationally, so enjoy. (laughs)
- Okay. - Thank you, I Danny. Now there are no pancakes on this plate. Usually these come with
pancakes on the side but we're going to have
pancakes go head to head in their own round because
of course you gotta do that. - So Denny's has one more meat. - A ham.
- They got what I call the city ham.
- City ham. - So let's start over here
and let's bite the sausage. That's a good sausage. Get a little piece of egg. Get a little piece of hash brown. Bacon. Ain't nothing wrong with any of that. I particularly like the sausage. - Sausage is good.
- Mm-hmm. - Hash browns left a little to be desired. - This sausage, not quite as good. You like these hash browns better? - Definitely. - They're more potatoey. - That's good because they're potatoes. - But they taste more potatoey
than the IHOP hash browns. - Eggs is eggs, man. - Now if I look at the two bacons, there's a dramatic difference
with the Denny's bacon looking a lot better.
- This bacon. You mean the IHOP bacon. You're on the IHOP side.
- Am I on the IHOP side? - Yes.
- Oh my goodness. IHOP bacon. - Now you know he's not
biased 'cause he was confused. - Yeah, I just blank it all up. So--
- And there's extra ham. - So the sausage is
much better at Denny's. The bacon is much better at IHOP. - I think you're, I think
the sausage is equal and the bacon is better,
the hash browns are better and you get extra meat. - On a scale of one to 10, this isn't bad. - No, it's good, I mean, I
would enjoy this breakfast. - It's good and if you're not, but we have the benefit
of head-to-head here and I feel like once
you add in extra meat, the bacon is dramatically better. - I actually like the sausage better. I'm giving this a six. - I was gonna go with a five and then I'm going with
an eight over here. - I'm going with a nine because I am very impressed with that. I would be happy with that. - Huh.
- I am happy with it. (upbeat Americana music) Time for those signature pancakes. Now I think I should point out
that one of these restaurants actually has pancakes in the name, Link, you know which one it is? - It's not yours, Denny. - Hi, I'm Dilly Dally. (crew laughs) These are our pancakes. - You very much have to learn where to go. There we go, hi! - Hey hey!
- International Danny here to give you the original full stack buttermilk pancakes. - Okay.
- So you notice the stacking and they're so flabby. Look how flabby and big
that looks. (chuckles) - [Link] Well they actually are bigger. - But there's two and there's three, there's three on this
side and there's two. Don't manhandle the pancakes. - I'm a man and I like to handle. - You like to panhandle? (chuckles) Only in Florida. Okay-- - [Link] Oh you're gonna butter it up? - Yeah man.
- All right well then I gotta butter this one up.
- What do I look like? A man that, I'm not a five year old. I put things on my pancakes. - Now we got the butter from
the restaurants too, right? - That is correct.
- Yeah, all the way. That's right, this is a true test. - Okay. - [Link] I'm doing the same thing you are except I'm doing it to the IHOP. I think that the Denny's
pancakes, they look more exciting. Like you've got this stuff on the side. - They look more like,
like they were cooked by not a robot, is that
what you're getting at? - Yeah or maybe they just have a form that they pour 'em in at IHOP
'cause I don't think they have robot-pouring pancakes back there. - That's a good pancake. - Mm, it's fluffy. It's... The syrup and the butter don't take over. You can really taste the--
- It's nice and balanced. - The batter itself is really good. - And they're very fluffy. - [Link] Now these are a
little more dense it seems. - Oh, totally different taste. - The butter is totally different. - [Rhett] I don't like the pancakes from the International House of Pancakes as much as I like 'em from Denny's. - And I'm trying to just isolate pancake. It kinda tastes like, growing up, I would eat a lot of microwave pancakes and I didn't like syrup so I would only eat butter on my pancakes. I don't know why I didn't
like syrup, that was stupid. - These are more cakey, I will say. They're more cakey. Some people don't like a cakey. Even, you can look at the color. I don't know if you can see that on camera but these are significantly more yellow and these are more white. - You're right, once I
ate these and went back, it literally started to taste like cake, like the taste itself. - Which I like 'cause it's a pan cake. Eight. I give it an eight. - What do you give these? - Well I want you to score this one first. - Okay.
- 'Cause that's how it works. - That's fair. They're very good. I'm gonna go with a seven. It's just a question of... Once the syrup gets inside-- - It's not a bad pancake.
- They get better. They keep getting better
and these are getting worse. They're kinda coming in the middle to me. - I'm giving these a six. I still like these better. - I'm actually starting
to like these better. I'm giving these a seven,
they're too cakey to me. - So you're giving them the same score. - Oh, I meant eight.
(Rhett chuckles) (upbeat Americana music) A breakfast menu is not--
- Omma-let you finish. Omma-let you finish but I
could really use some eggs. - Hello.
- Hello. - I'm-- (sighs) Doris Day. - Okay. - [Doris] This is our
Philly cheese steak omelet. It's got grilled prime
rib, peppers, onions, sauteed mushrooms and Swiss cheese. - Okay.
- Thank you, Doris. - I go where I want.
- Okay. Hello.
- Philly cheese steak. Versus. - This is the chicken fajita omelet. It has the chicken fajita,
it has the cheeses, a blend of cheeses,
salsa, a poblano pepper, red bell pepper, and a
dollop of sour cream so. - [Rhett] That's more than a dollop. - This made us international and mean. (crew laughs) - Now--
- This has got meat on it. - These are not apples to apples or I mean, it's specialized
omelet to specialized omelet. Philly cheese, oh and might I say, Rhett, that is quite a shirt you got there. - Oh thanks.
- At Mythical.com, we're releasing our homage to the '90s and it's a shout-out in our
novel to hyper-color t-shirts. (blows raspberry) You blow on that thing and
look at it, or you just get hot and it turns pink.
- You don't have to put your lips on the shirt
but whatever floats your boat. - It starts out blue and when
you get hot, it turns pink. - Blue? - More like a blue to
pink, purple to pink. - I would say purple. I'd say I'm enjoying this. - This is weird to me. It's not bad 'cause I'm
absolutely starving. - I think that IHOP has a tendency to take things even further than Denny's. I don't know, maybe
that's just a perception that I have in my mind but
this is pretty extravagant. - [Link] What do you think
of the quality of the steak? - It's good, let me eat some more. - [Link] It's not bad. - I mean, you might think
that was gonna be tough. It's very tender.
- Yeah it is. I was surprised by that. So I'm trying to grab me some chicken. - Chicken's a little, that
chicken's a little dry. I can't see through your arm. Okay. Okay. Having trouble. - So they both shoved
things into an omelet that typically you'd eat some other way. - That tastes good. - I mean there's a lot in there. - I'm trying not to be too biased because I like sour cream
and salsa and stuff like, I kinda feel like the ingredients on the Denny's side might
be a little bit better but these are both really solid omelets. - But I really found myself
wanting to go back over here to the steak zone and I'm
definitely preferring it. I'm gonna give this one an eight. - I think that if I just isolate it down to the quality of the eggs and
my experience with the eggs, Denny's has a slight edge. - They got a better egg you think? - I'm gonna give it an eight as well. But this is a very, very close second that I'm gonna give a seven. - I feel like it doesn't
quite work in an omelet. But I still enjoy it. I'm gonna give it a six. (upbeat Americana music) - You might remember the stunt last year where IHOP changed their name to IHOB. The B stood for burgers because apparently nobody knew they made those. - Right and sometimes
when I'm feeling frisky, I call Denny's Benny's.
- Hey hey Benny's. - Hello.
- What do you call it? - I'm Walter Cronkite. This is our bourbon bacon burger. - [Link] It's the what? - Uh, what? - Nothing.
(Rhett laughs) It's what, okay, keep going. - Bourbon bacon burger. - (grunts) It's got cheddar cheese, bacon, sauteed mushrooms all on a cheddar bun and some wavy fries. - Wavy? - Okay, yeah, that's a little wavy. (waitress grunts) - Goodbye. Oh my God. Howdy partners. Are you ready to go down
to the old town road and have the cowboy barbecue bacon burger. - Okay.
- Oh okay. - We got the bacon, we've got a burger, we've got American cheese. We've got the onion rings,
we've got the barbecue sauce and a little bit of
kartoffels of fries for you so you can eat it white you
listen to Der Fonkybeats. Is this for me?
- Yeah. That's your tip.
- Thank you. (Rhett laughs) - Okay let's try Denny's. Now--
- Fonkybeats. - That's a good looking burger. Very much like an
authentically, like diner, which you would expect, diner burger by the way they've done the meat here. - Yeah, I mean they're
really trying with the bun. Do they succeed? - I wanted more. - I actually like the fact that
the burger is not too tall. - It's not bad. - But it's clearly leaving
something to be desired. You want my help? - You just ate a burger then
put your face on my shirt. - Well you can buy another one. - Okay. Now IHOP, they really made
a big deal about this. - So the difference is in my mind, it's those fried onion rings on there. And probably a different barbecue sauce. - Huh.
- Same height burger patty. The onion rings I think are
proven to be a bit much. - Overpowering for sure.
- These fries are absolutely sad looking and crunchy as a bad toenail. - Honestly I'm disappointed
in both of 'em. - Me too, man. - And I feel like there's just, there's a lot going on, I
gotta isolate this down, I'm just gonna go just for the meat. - Oh you're gonna deconstruct? - [Rhett] I gotta go
straight for the meat. - I can deconstruct. So okay, and this is fair. I mean it's like... If you grab that burger-- - I've already eaten most of the meat so give me some of that. - Here you go. I think these were both
made in a back alley that was shared by both restaurants. (crew laughs) - They're definitely both getting the beef from the same place. - I know, they're the exact same beef. - I'm gonna give 'em both a three. - Five. I was, I'm a little more generous but it's done nothing for us.
- You know what? Actually you know what,
these fries are better so I'm gonna upgrade this to a four. - I'll stay at five and
five which brings us to Denny's having 51 points
and IHOP narrowly winning with one more point, 52 points. IHOP, you are the absolute uncontested best breakfast leaning
diner and OG pancake house of all time!
- Oh yeah. - According to us.
- Thank you. - Congratulations. You've won a chance to
sponsor an episode of GMM. Can you talk to corporate? - I will tell my bosses. - Oh.
- They're in Encino. - (chuckles) Thank you for liking, commenting and subscribing. - You know what time it is. - I'm Cassandra.
- And I'm Brian. - And I just saw Brian watch
Good Mythical Morning at work while eating breakfast. - And it's time to spin the--
- Wheel of Mythicality. - At work? - She just saw him
watching our show at work. - Click the top link to
watch us pick the best flavor of IHOP pancakes in Good Mythical More. - And to find out where the Wheel of Mythicality's gonna land. - Look at that one, it's just chocolate. Bring "The Lost Causes of Bleak
Creek" to life on your body. The official clothing collection of the novel is out now at Mythical.com.
Negligible.
Yay, I can actually bring something to the conversation because I had iHop when I visited the US 2 years ago.
I feel the same as Link about the bacon from iHop, it was awesome.
IHOP idenny/international Denny is my new favorite character.
I like both Dennyβs and iHop. The difference for me is really a location by location difference. I canβt say that I have ever been to an iHop that I was like man Iβm never going back there, but the Dennyβs in my town I refuse to go to! The service is terrible, they are always out of like half their menu, and the food is always cold! But Iβve been to several Dennyβs that are amazing! It all comes down to the workers I think!
Denny's used to win this for me because of their off-the-wall stuff they'd throw on the menu. Like... about 5 years ago I went into a Dennys at 2 in the morning and got a Hamburger Tortilla Pizza, or something like that. It was a big tortilla, rolled flat, topped with stuff you'd find on a hamburger (beef, pickles, tomatoes, lettuce, etc), cut like a pizza.
But now that Denny's has gone to a more traditionalist menu, I suspect to compete head-to-head with IHOP... they've lost that late night stoner food charm.
I like both places, so I didn't really have skin in this race so to speak. Like others have said, this is very location-by-location. That said, I've found Denny's burgers to be much better than IHOP's more consistently, so that was the one part I heavily disagreed with.
Gonna post before I watch the video but: Ihop is better but Denny's is so much cheaper that I prefer it. I'm not a big fan of breakfast places though.
Edit: I'm surprised it came so close!
I thought Rhett was allergic to maple syrup?
Very small win, and Denny's had more points in more categories, if it wasn't for the combos Denny's would have won. If 3/4 are better at one restaurant, shouldn't they get a bonus point? 3 more for Denny's, 1 more for iHop.
I know its not how they play it, but come on, it seems so unfair to Denny's.
