kicking this week off with speaking part one today tomorrow we will have a task one writing for members followed by listening parts one and two for everyone in the more classes throughout the week alright students so this is a speaking class and we want to get right into speaking make sure to speak and repeat throughout the class its if you are writing into the chat also make sure to speak and repeat my English for those of you who do not know I am from Victoria which is beside than Coover on Vancouver Island it's the capital city of the province of British Columbia in Canada and I speak West Coast style English which is the same as you will hear or similar as what you will hear in San Francisco Seattle Los Angeles and that you probably hear many of those Hollywood movies that you watch alright so students let's warm up are speaking with some of the common questions that every student is asked in the speaking so go to your speaking interview early about one hour early so that you can really feel comfortable with your surroundings make sure to speak English on the day of your interview from the time that you wake up from the morning okay and then when you go into the exam room you will be met by the examiner when the examiner will ask you what is your full name always practice these questions in your classes at home just so that you can really feel comfortable answering them in many different ways so what is your full name my full name is Adrienne Benedict you can just call me Adrienne as most people do and I'm doing fantastic today you-jin thank you for asking okay so give your full name and learn to do it in many different ways I see some students are answering that's fantastic so Khyber Jen says my full name is Khyber mere moment so please just call me by my first name Khyber okay we only save for short Khyber if you have a long name like Michel and most people call you Mike for short so the short form of your name we usually don't say Khyber for short when it's a part of your other names okay so keep that in mind careful it's confusing otherwise raman singh says my full name is Raman Deep Singh you can call me just Raman for short so Raman Singh that's where you can say Raman for short okay because you're shortening rahman deep to just Raman for short okay Tunde other Yami says my full name is Adi ami toonder but you can call me by my first name tun death Ayesha says my full name is Ayesha Fazal allahi please just call me Ayesha students if you don't answer or you don't tell the examiner what they should call you then their next question is always and what should I call you okay that's always the next question so that's why you should just include that it shows the examiner that you prepared for the exam you practiced for it and you have an idea of how it works that gives confidence to the examiner as well okay so my full name is Michael McLeod please just call me Mike for short okay so that would be a typical answer all right okay students and then of course the next question sometimes this is actually the first question sometimes it's the second question is may I see your identification the instructions for the examiner are clear they have to ask for your identification and match the information on their marking sheet that has your information like your registration number your ID your ID number like your passport number and they're matching those two pieces of information so you have to give them the same ID that you use during registration and then you can say like sue 41:21 oh it says yes sure please take a look at my passport which I used for registration very nice sue clever so you remembered what I said sue might as well show that you can use an adjective clause for this question okay very nice Moustakas med says sure here you are that works you don't have to overcomplicate every answer you definitely want to be natural okay so Rina Abraham says yes here it is please take a look tuned ad AME yes of course please let me just grab it out of my pocket mm-hmm that works tuned dad good Manu preet says yes here it is Maxime kadosh says yes this is my passport which I used for registration for this exam that works Maxime kheh and that helps because again you're giving confidence to the examiner that you prepared you know what IB you're supposed to have it makes you feel confident and comfortable as well so that's good okay that's what you want to do so yes absolutely here is my passport which I used to register for this exam please take a look okay and then I'm sure they'll smile and say thank you I appreciate that they won't say I appreciate that but that's what they're thinking and then they'll go okay here's your identification back now we shall begin for part 1 I will ask you some questions to get to know you better and a couple of questions on a general topic and then they might ask you something like how are you feeling today why not that's a common question that we ask from each other the workplace or during an exam when we meet with our friends or family so how are you doing today give me a nice answer for this one okay remember you might be feeling a bit nervous excited okay maksimka says I feel a little confused because it's a big day for me I don't think confused maxime cos the best choice and students we see I feel a little it's I know it sounds strange but we use the article ah when we say a little a little shy a little sad a little something okay so maksimka says I feel a bit nervous because it's a big day for me I really need to do well on this exam okay Maxime got full sentence answers okay I feel a little bit nervous because it's a big day for me I really need to do well on this exam alright body posture open feel confident flower son says I feel quite nervous about this tests as it's the first time for me to have a real IELTS exam and I have to perform well sure hikmah tillow says I'm feeling quite nervous and excited because this is my first IELTS exam how about you yeah hikmah till oh good so you're thinking you know natural English or natural any language when somebody asks us how we are doing usually it's polite to ask back and how are you today and then the examiner might say I feel a bit exhausted I've tested a lot of students but otherwise good okay Jimmy John says well today I feel great I feel confident and I'm ambitious that I will get a nice high band score on this exam let's go with that let's be optimist so I'm feeling great I had a good night's rest and I'm confident that I will do well on this exam confidence is key to success students so repeat after me how are you feeling today I'm feeling great I had a good night's rest and I'm confident that I will do well on this exam whoo all right next question what helps you to relax okay again there's very often questions that ask about relaxation hobbies what you do in your leisure time free time spare time so make sure that you are excited about this question even if you heard it a thousand times before it's the IELTS exam you want to be like me right now you want to be very excited and energetic okay all right Khyber Jen says well I believe that playing cricket with either my friends or elder brother really helps me unwind like I played with my brothers Shaquille Bulow iqbal for three hours at the city park just the other day I felt good about it afterwards sure Khyber careful a little bit with your word choice okay Rodrigo do what they our member says I'm feeling very good as I went to bed early to have a good night's sleep and got here on time all right Rodrigo that's for the previous question sounds great all right okay sir Sean I think you're giving an applause there or something which is all right I appreciate that Mary Oquendo says I do some relaxation techniques and deep breathing exercises whenever I'm anxious these usually work to calm my nerves Muriel finish the idea always finish the idea okay students it's really important to finish your ideas when you're answering okay so Mary OH I do some relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises whenever I'm anxious and these usually work to help me feel calm okay Mario that's your full answer and Mario don't use the word and but use the word such as because deep breathing exercise is a type of relaxation technique right so make sure you're using the appropriate conjunctions or joining words in your sentences okay Kevin Bowie says most of the time I tend to derive pleasure from reading books especially self-help books just before this exam I spent half an hour devouring my book called deep work and it was entertaining Kevin you're using a lot of great words expressions I like it it's descriptive except it's not clearly answering my question the question is what helps you to relax not what do you do for fun or what do you do to entertain yourself so I can imagine that reading books helps you to relax but you still have to tell me that okay so you have to use the word relax or some synonym of that so synonyms of relax okay unwind is a common one okay decompress is another one let go of stress would be an expression okay calm myself would be another way to say it okay feel at ease okay ease my mind become less tense okay those are all different ways to say the idea of relaxed but you definitely have to use at least one of these in your response so that the examiner can check their little box off which says coherent accurate answer okay so that's really really really important very important you have to use the key element of the question does that make sense students so or did you catch that because that's really really important and qumola says chill out or just chill is another one as well chill or chill out sure those are good ones as well okay that works all right kevin says understood awesome Kevin thanks for the feedback yeah so what helps you to relax well if I'm energetic or if I'm feeling energetic then going for a jog helps me to relieve stress and if I'm feeling exhausted then taking a hot bath helps me to unwind as I did last night after a long day of IELTS studies okay so repeat after me students what helps you to relax well if I'm feeling energetic then going for a jog it helps me to relieve stress and if I'm feeling exhausted then taking a hot bath helps me to him wine as I did last night after a long day of IELTS studies very clear accurate good explanation lots of connections notice the use of conditionals if I'm then this if I'm then that right so those are all getting you points for grammar complexity fluency lexical resource okay all right so students let's get into this now the examiner will say okay now let's talk about paper and computer whatever that means and then they're going to get into paper computer so what makes up your actual mark so what are eyelets examiners marking for your overall speaking score okay so if you search on the internet you're going to find different kinds of information but basically the marking rubric so the marking metrics for the examiners are divided into four categories one of them is called fluency and coherence okay one of them is called grammar range and accuracy okay another one is called lexical resource okay and the fourth one is called pronunciation all right so these are basically the four different specific groups that the examiners are listening for and marking and that's what they're trained for okay lexical resource is vocabulary it's just a fancy way to say vocabulary which includes other concepts like collocations phrasal verbs idiomatic expressions and so on okay now this is one way to think about it and it's kind of an interesting notion to go through each of these another way that you can think about it is like this you have complexity okay you have coherence and you have natural language okay I like to tell students that this is a better way to think about your speaking ability than this because this it looks like you can have separate marks for this one so sometimes students think that okay I can get AB and score of nine here even though I might get AB and score of six here that's usually not the case okay for somebody who has a grammar range and accuracy of nine their fluency and coherence score is probably gonna be at least an eighth okay their lexical resource score is going to be at least an eighth and their pronunciation is most likely going to be at least an eighth it might be a little bit less but it's unlikely that somebody has this high level English ability and fluency coherence grammar lexical resource but their pronunciation is way down that's very unusual and the reason why is because these skills are not truly separate okay they're interconnected like what you see here okay so they overlap the accurate English here is they're inclusive they're not mutually exclusive so when you have more complex language it becomes more natural language and it becomes more coherent language okay so you have to think about it this way so you need to build all of your English skills together you want to focus on your grammar range you want to focus on building up your vocabulary and balance these skills they balance these skills so think about as complexity complexity includes lexical resource and grammar range natural language will include pronunciation intonation articulation of sounds as well okay so there are multiple elements to natural language that all fall under pronunciation here and then coherence basically involves all of these because you can have the bed English in the world but if I can't understand you because your pronunciation is really different then it's not coherent for me anyway okay all right so think about your mark this way this is what the examiners are looking at but also think about it this way all right I hope that makes sense if that's not clear you can always send me an email and ask me follow-up questions okay all right students so to be complex to be coherent join your ideas together make sure to answer the question use the key elements of the question paraphrase the key elements of the question give clear explanations and examples well do this together as we go through the questions so let's talk about paper and computer first question how often do you write on paper let's see what you have for these okay so how often do you write on paper Hazara caird Gazzara says in my country mostly paper is used for noting down lectures during study at university computer is used for making maps different software like Crowell drawing Hazara you would get a very low mark for that like AB and five because it sounds like you didn't understand any part of the question other than paper okay you're not answering the question the question is how often do you write on paper okay Karen veer says well due to the advent of Technology nowadays most of the work is done on computers or mobile phones so I rarely get a chance to write on paper okay I Karen it's not bad but to avoid losing marks answer the question first and then give the reason in most cases that's better so this is a tip students okay so tip focus to answer the question first and then give an explanation so I'm going to use your example here Karen for this important point so these two answers they look the same but one will get a better mark than the other okay I rarely write on paper maybe just once a week because technology is readily available and I most often using the computer ok or since the advent of technology most writing is done on computers so I rarely find myself writing on paper ok so these two answers they look very similar ok the big difference of course is here I'm answering first I rarely write on paper maybe just once a week and then I'm giving my reason because technology is readily available and I most often using the computer all right and then you here you have the inverse right the opposite so since the advent of technology most writing is done on computers it's passive voice it's a little bit awkward so I rarely find myself writing on paper definitely the examiner will give the higher band score for this answer it's more accurate it's more direct to the question ok and right away it's clear for the examiners ears that you caught the question correctly and you're answering it correctly here it's a little bit confusing the has to be patient and wait for this part for them to realize that uh okay they did catch that question correctly it's just they're answering style was a bit awkward okay this is better communication both are good English both can be accepted as natural English but this is better communication does that make sense students so focus on answers first then explanations then examples okay I'm only very very advanced students should play around with that a bit for most students I would HIGHLY highly suggest going with answer explain example you will get a better overall score is that clear is that clear for everyone okay meanwhile Amira said excess I regularly use pen and paper almost every day to write down my shopping lists as well as marking my students homework as a teacher get Amira very nice direct answer okay and giving reasons for it as well alright yeah hikmah till Allah says that makes sense flower census all right okay I'll give it a shot Allah sock madhab says well as I'm both the student and the cashier at McDonald's I quite often write on paper throughout my day especially in university Karin beer Thank You Karin says yes sir that makes sense okay Mary o Kondo yes sir okay yeah so answer explain example all right good good good good so notice of course another key point here is I used qualitative okay this is another important point to pay attention to so qualitative right and then quantitative and again this is the most accurate communication in interactions when we start with the qualitative like I rarely write on paper ok listeners thinking what does rarely mean for you once a day once a month once a year so what is rarely in your world and then right away you give it maybe just once a week okay so qualitative followed by quantitative answer followed by explanation that is your road to bumping your score by even one band score in a short time okay it's really hard to improve your grammar accuracy and your lexical resource in a couple weeks but if you practice you can definitely improve your communicative style your diction in a few weeks okay so pay attention to these points and practice them alright alright next question let's move along what is better here we are what is better about writing on a computer so what is better about writing on a computer give me a nice full sentence answer explanation example for this one sequani quasi mob says typing on a computer takes less time and effort also computers are more reliable for keeping information safe for a long time writing on a computer is also good for correcting mistakes sucks suck quaniee very nice in your answer try to think about how you can say the same using some correlative conjunctions like not only but also weather or eat or those would work really well with your answer ok murasa says well smart machines not only note important points quickly but also add related pictures and graphs to the topic as well as automatically correcting grammar and spelling mistakes ok now this isn't asking about you so you don't have to use me or my although you can but you can be general here as well because you don't hear the word you okay but Julia Dobbs says copy paste and delete features are definitely advantages of writing on a computer sure Alois Zachman DAF says the main benefits of writing on a computer are that it's faster compared to handwriting i mean if people want to send an email they don't have to go a far distance okay it was a little bit confusing I'll be honest with you with the email example but otherwise I get where you're going with it Jimmy John says well while writing on a computer there is a dictionary for correction because sometimes mistakes happen especially when typing very fast ven's eight says I got 8.5 ah Niles woohoo Benz that's awesome 8.5 is an exceptionally good score congratulations good for you've ends and thank you for coming back to class and sharing that and making sure that others feel that hey if fans can do it I can do it too awesome men's I wish you the best in your next steps whether it's immigration school or both all right reg vir Singh says writing on a computer is not only beneficial for the environment as it does not require paper but also it is accurate as people can use it to build tools for grammar and other Corrections reg vir beautiful okay so yeah you could absolutely say that so using a computer for writing is not only environmentally friendly as it doesn't require cutting down trees to make paper but it's arguably much faster and more accurate than writing by hand as there are tools such as grammar and spell check at the authors disposal all right so repeat after me what is better about writing on a computer now again of course students I'm pushing you for that band 9 level response just so you see that okay that's a bad 9 that's what a band 9 communicative style is so using a computer for writing is not only environmentally friendly as it doesn't require cutting down trees to make paper but it's arguably much faster and more accurate than writing by hand as there are tools such as grammar and spell check at the authors disposal who okay lots of lexical resource huge grammar range very clear explanation and answer that's what you need to do ok that's your band 9 right remember students band 9 is not a native English speaker it's what's called an expert user of the English language ok all right so our June says sir it's kamle a good application to improve speaking yeah absolutely our June yeah ok all right next question here we go when is paper more useful than a computer for writing there's a good question ok so when is paper more useful than a computer for writing give me a nice answer for that one ok maksimka says paper is more useful than a compute when we have a problem with electricity or when we are traveling in some reason region where we can't you have electricity for the laptop absolutely maxima that's the first thought that comes to my mind as well computers require electricity if you don't have it you're in trouble flower Sons is in my opinion when we need to learn information by heart writing on a piece of paper will be more effective and create long term memories better than typing on a laptop ok maxima says or maksimka says paper is more useful ok it's the same I see that four dots knob yeah where member says at school when children are learning penmanship it's essential to write on paper rather than laptops as it is important to learn calligraphy yet hand-eye coordination as well mind you computer hand-eye coordination also there okay ruff neat son do says well paper is important for official work as well as for writing in schools and colleges as compared to using a computer but why Rebney why is it important in school compared to a computer I'm not sure le Joba adebola says hi Adrian I'm one of your online students from Nigeria I humbly wish to appreciate you I did my speaking test on the 11th of February it was awesome my part two was to talk about a special achievement Lu Joba thank you for your feedback I appreciate that very much it does it really means a lot to me the reason why I do this students is truly because I hope that you all become successful in school in life that's the driving force otherwise my life is grand so to hear your success stories really puts a sunshine in my day so thank you okay all right Miranda says when you have to take notes for something not that important such as a shopping list writing on paper is more convenient in these circumstances yeah absolutely Miranda when the information needs to be present and obvious right such as a shopping list or important activities in the calendar it's often better to use pen and paper right so let's write up an answer for this there are two clear situations which come to mind we're having a Carbon Copy is better than going digital the first is of course in the absence of electricity the second is when the information should be present such as activities in a calendar or a shopping list the other day I totally forgot to meet with one of my friends because our schedule was virtual and I didn't have my computer on all right so a long answer but clear it's okay to give long answer students as long as it is all on the right topic now of course within reason so don't just keep talking and talking and talking until the examiner stops you I've heard there are some teachers or some websites that say this like keep talking until the examiner stops you please don't do that okay you will lose marks especially because students will just become incoherent after a while so don't just keep talking and talking make sure you stay on topic okay this is about as long as you want to give an answer maximum okay so when is paper more useful than a computer for writing here we go there are two clear situations which come to mind we're having a carbon copy is better than going digital the first is of course in the absence of electricity the second is when the information should be present such as activities in the calendar or a shopping list the other day I totally forgot to meet with one of my friends because her schedule was virtual and I didn't have my computer on okay all right so again if you give a long answer like this you need to be fluent if you find yourself really getting stuck focus on shorter more accurate answers okay all right so again a tip here important tip okay do not just keep talking until the examiner stops you this is a really bad idea okay I'm not sure who started seeing that as a suggestion but it's just the bad rumor okay next question students do you like to read from paper or from the computer why give me a nice full sentence answer for this do you like to read from paper or from the computer why flower son says well I like reading from paper books not only because it's good for my eyesight but also I like the smell and the sound of paper whenever I turn the page yeah you like the tactile feel it's called the tactile feel tactile ta SI TI le tack okay nice flower son Tito is asking how can I be a member of the channel Tito you should see a join button beside the subscribe button on the channel page if you don't see it you probably need to use a VPN it might not be available in your region okay Rodrigo Duarte says I prefer to read from the computer because I can bring loads of texts recorded on memory without having to handle papers that get lost easily and feel super heavy in my backpack yeah murasa says that's a very interesting question for me I like to read more from the computer because not only can I store more than 50 gigabytes of material on my laptop and take it anywhere but also I can find easily the meanings of words as there is a built-in dictionary yeah murasa absolutely I agree 100% nub yep for dobbs I prefer to read from paper news such as newspapers or books because there are many reasons like I can read whenever I want and it doesn't hurt my eyes the same like a computer yeah that's why a lot of people now use ear eaters right it's not backlit Karamveer says definitely I prefer reading directly from paper bag books as it's more convenient to flip the pages which become quite irritating on ebooks sure Rodrigo Duarte says twice a month I traveled by plane and I use my laptop to read during the round-trip I got used to it so I prefer it more than paper all right let's see is mirror Zama on Dean says this is a due date debatable topic and it depends on individual preference some like to use computers tabs mobile phones to do their reading but some prefer to use paper but he's mirror I can't give you a good mark for that because you're not telling me what I want to know do you like to read from paper or from the computer why okay I don't want to know that people of course I know that eight billion people the examiner knows that some people prefer paper some people for prefer computers students don't give ambiguous answers okay so avoid these kinds of answers again I don't know who started saying this for IELTS instructions like it depends or it can be both but these are usually weak answers and often confusing answers that don't answer the question so avoid answers like it depends yeah of course everything is gray in the world but that's not an interesting or exciting we want you to choose one side or the other if we think about the world there's always gray this or that both that and this then we always get stuck sitting on the fence the Sun goes up the sun goes down and nothing really happens and the next thing you know we look in a mirror and we see a rock okay so be decisive choose one side indicate reasons you'll get much better scores okay so avoid answers like it depends or both or well this or that okay so avoid these kinds of ambiguous answers instead you know say answers like I truly like to read from paperback books as I love the feel and smell of paper while I'm turning pages also I feel proud to see my accomplishment as I read more and more pages of a thick book this is simply not possible with computers or ear eaters okay yeah I think a lot of people love to see that oh look at this big thick book and I'm on the last few pages or look at this bookshelf in my house I've read all of these books you can't really do that with an e-reader with an e-reader it's like look at all the books I've read it's all in here all in this little eReader look I've read like hundreds see them all and they're like yeah that's you know I can see those gigabytes so not quite the same as when you go into somebody's home and you see all these books that have been read and they're like look at all the books I've read alright so again repeat after me do you like to read from paper or from the computer avoid answers like it depends or both or some people like this some people like that it's about you I truly like to read from paperback books as I love to the feel and smell of paper while I'm turning pages also I feel proud to see my accomplishment as I read more and more pages of a thick book this is simply not possible with computers or ear eaters alright students a fantastic job today fantastic job here are a couple more questions for you to try at home if you had to write a book would you choose to do it on paper or with a computer why have the way people write changed because of the computer in what ways or in what way that I will leave for you for homework you can answer those two questions record it on your phone and then send it to me by email I will gladly tell you you're speaking score estimate again my
