for everyone and now let's get into some speaking for the day so our goal today is to focus on speaking part one and improve our fluency our strategy our confidence so that we can get those nice high ielts uh band scores all right thank you sharmin okay everyone uh so the f um ielts interview takes about uh 12 minutes roughly and you should arrive early to your speaking exam about one hour early you have to do your registration 20 minutes before you meet the examiner but it's a good idea to get there at least an hour early so you can get comfortable familiar with the exam center go to the washroom if you need to hydrate drink some water and of course try to find some other candidates to practice your english with take some speaking questions with you it's a good idea to print out two copies so that you can give one to another person who is there and say hey would you like to practice some speaking with me before the interview just so we build some fluency and some confidence and i'm sure somebody who's there early like you will be very happy that you asked them to do that okay all right cool meme yeah this is live come on very welcome to the class okay so you get comfortable with the exam center you build confidence by practicing with other candidates who are waiting and then you get called into your ielts speaking interview and the first question that you usually get asked is this one here so the examiner will start by saying welcome to the speaking portion of the ielts exam my name is adrian i will be your examiner for this part of the test the test has three parts i will give you instructions for each i'm recording this for clerical purposes it's candidate number one two three four five six and the test is currently being done in vancouver canada at thirteen o'clock okay and then the first question that they will ask you is may i see your identification okay now this is speaking so make sure to speak not just right into the chat i really want to visualize that you're speaking at home and not just typing okay so angel anjali says yes certainly here's my passport which i used to register for this exam please have a look angel that is a really good fluent response to start you off okay uh janil says yes of course here is my national id that i used to register for this exam a couple of weeks ago please have a look yeah so that's the kind of full sentence response that janeil is giving which you want to start with just so you can right away build that confidence and fluency you want to break through that nervousness and one really good way to break through the nervousness is to speak in full sentences sami rocky says yes certainly here's my id card which i used to register for this exam a couple of days ago please have a look now sami definitely you want to register for your exam at least a few weeks before you sit your test otherwise it's good scr97 says yes of course here's my passport that i used to register my full name is salah elawarda but you can call me only salah okay don't jump the gun on questions either so if you haven't been asked for your name yet please don't give your name wait for the examiner to ask you so for this question you can say yes certainly just give me a moment while i uh pull it out of my pocket here is my passport that i used to register for the test okay so again uh it's really important that you show fluency right away okay everyone so um repeat this sentence so please do lots of repetition in this class that will help you to develop your language especially for these kind of warm-up questions so here we go repeat and here we go may i see your identification yes certainly just give me a moment while i pull it out of my pocket here is my passport that i used to register for the test now comes the next question what is your full name okay while you give me this answer i'm going to just record this important tip that i just gave you so tip uh start your answers with full sentences right away so that you both show fluency and build your confidence for the rest of the interview the icebreaker questions are a great way to do this okay all right so what is your full name um sir polyglot says my full name is salah rachid but you can call me salah fahim says my full name is fahim radawa call me by my first name fahim okay good students you want to be polite with the examiner in the ielts speaking you don't have to be extremely formal so you're not giving a political speech for example or you're not presenting a legal debate in a courtroom but you do want to be polite okay so when you ask a person to call you by a certain name you should use the word please so please call me this okay not you can call me or uh such but please call me or just call me okay those are the polite forms so uh just a quick note here be polite during the introduction okay which means using please call me or uh just call me you can call me as okay uh but these are a bit more polite in natural english okay so use those okay uh suyash priyadarshi says my full name is suyash priyadashi but you can call me by my first name suyash again the but is not good okay so so i don't suggest using uh the butt you can okay it's a little bit um uh impolite in the sense that it sounds like you're talking from a higher position all right so i would go with something like my full name is edward gonzalez uh please call me eddie it's my nickname and i'm comfortable with it all right um so here we go uh what is your full name my full name is edward gonzalez please call me eddie it's my nickname and i'm comfortable with it okay so nice and polite nice and polite all right uh next question so good job so far everyone let's keep moving along um where do you live okay so next question is where do you live it's a very very common uh question that the examiners will ask from you all right charman says well i reside in a two-bedroom flat with my beloved husband on the fifth floor of a high-rise building which is situated at muhammad poor in central dhaka division okay very good charmin careful uh not to repeat words like flat and apartment either flat or apartment but not both okay flat is usually for british australian apartment more canadian american all right abhishek says well i have been residing uh in a two-bedroom flat on the fifth floor with both of my parents uh in the heart of uh gujarat ahmedabad uh located in the western part of india very nice abhishek okay i wouldn't add more to abhishek so the rest of the next sentence i think it's too much it's kind of going a bit off topic as well sammy says i live in a three-bedroom apartment on the third floor of marg apartments near the beach uh samia would say i live in a three-bedroom uh apartment um called marg apartments near the beach okay ahmad says i live in new delhi which is the capital of india in my independent studio apartment which is in the city center that's beautiful that's a really nice original response i like it okay vishnu says i live in kadapa adhar atra pradesh which is located in the southern part of india kodapa is a beautiful location that is surrounded with mountains okay vishnu again that last part it's a little bit overspeaking but it's okay all right nav karu says i live in a small village called talwandi malik where i have my own detached home and i live with my family okay you need a connective there nav you can't just say own detached home with my family okay all right gutem says i am a native of janakpur which is the province which is the second province of nepal currently i'm living in kathmandu which is the capital city okay sure so where do you live i live in a two-bedroom uh townhouse uh on the outskirts of downtown victoria bc which is one of the most western cities in canada all right so yeah and a lot of you have now learned this and you're using it that when you're asked where do you live uh you want to state the micro so your actual residence your house your apartment your town home and you want to name the city so you go from small to big it makes sense okay or you go from big to small you can say i live in canada in the city of vancouver downtown in a two-bedroom flat with my family so you can go big to small or small to big of course you should pay attention to good structure okay the better your structure the clear your responses so here we go where do you live i live in a two-bedroom townhouse on the outskirts of downtown victoria bc which is one of the most western cities in canada again showing that really nice fluency right off the bat right from the very beginning building confidence leading into part one okay all right and then here is another very common uh question that uh examiners will ask at the beginning what is your favorite hobby okay so your past time activity what you like to do when you have some free time it's a regular activity that you don't do for money you don't do professionally you do it purely for enjoyment all right so what is your favorite hobby again a nice full sentence answer for this one and right away when you hear this type of question you should be immediately thinking answer plus explain plus example all right those should immediately be coming to mind uh fahim gaming says i have plenty of hobbies anything from drawing painting sports and much more however my favorite hobby is pretty simple i'm sure that everybody does it it's listening to music fajimiya that's not bad i would start with your hobby and then be more specific so being specific is a really really good idea okay charman says well i have several hobbies which i indulge in but i what i do depends on my mood if i feel very energetic then i go for a jog or if i just want to relax at home then i prefer to cook something okay so i'm seeing a several of these kinds of answers that are what's called broad answers they're non-specific answers it's better to be specific in your ielts interview you're going to get higher band scores okay so be specific with your answers all right you will get a better band score because it's better communication um so what i mean by this is um do not start with something like okay don't start with this kind of a phrase like i have lots of hobbies such as uh but my favorite one is something okay so rather than doing it this way um in my spare time i am passionate about cycling i love uh getting exercise and seeing many new places while doing it and riding my bike for an hour at least two to three times a week is a great way to do this i went for a nice ride along the beach just yesterday with my friend john okay so rather than saying i have lots of hobbies uh such as cooking listening to music reading books but my favorite one is riding my bicycle i like to do it as often as i can that's an okay answer but a more accurate a clear answer to this question that uses more specific contextual vocabulary is uh this one in my spare time i'm passionate about cycling i love getting exercise and seeing many new places while doing it and riding my bike for an hour at least a couple times a week is a great way to do this i went for a nice ride along the beach just yesterday with my friend john does everybody see the difference or hear the difference between specific and non-specific answers okay so i haven't emphasized that enough in the past and that's why i'm taking the chance to do it right now so when you produce this kind of answer you get what's called contextual vocabulary all right and more clarity right abhishek says yes sita says yes okay all right so um even if you have perfect english then with a general kind of broad answer you get a band eight with a very specific type of answer like this with answer explanation example you're gonna get a band nine okay all right hi rejeve welcome david and ali more members joining in that's fantastic by the way if somebody wants to become a member of our channel just click the join button uh next to the uh subscribe button okay uh leset perez says in my spare time i really like to go to the gym i enjoy getting exercise and focusing on my mental health i usually stay there for around two hours okay lissette that's much better that's why i read yours because i can see that you realized okay it makes more sense to have a more focused accurate answer yeah uh sardour i'm a big fan of collecting hats that may compound my force notice how i took out that first part so it's more specific right um so that i can look great that is to say my fashion is interco connected with my pretty hats all right shardor good again be specific nice okay um ali hatim says my favorite pastime activity is playing football with my friends just last week we played 90 minute match and that was fun and tiring okay ali good answer example you don't have an explanation but you have an answer and an example and that's great okay just paul welcome to our group of members nice all right so uh once you're done the warm-up and the warm-up should go nice and smooth if you're a bit nervous and you're getting a bit stuck that's okay you can still get even a band nine alright so examiners expect that you're nervous during the icebreaker questions so if you're making a couple of slight mistakes fumbling your words that's okay they're used to that okay um you can still get a band 9 uh or a very high band but now that you're getting into the part one questions you need to give clear and complete answers so the examiners at this point expect that you have gained a bit of confidence you're feeling more comfortable and your mistakes are no longer because of nervousness so just a quick tip there for you okay so it's okay to be nervous during the icebreaker questions and make a few mistakes as a result of the jitters okay uh jitters is another way to say nervousness it's like your jittery okay so it's okay to be nervous and make a few mistakes as a result of these jitters however once the specific questions begin for part one you will lose marks if your mistakes persist uh regardless of uh being anxious or not anxious is another way to say being nervous okay so uh but this time um you should be confident uh take a couple of deep breaths during the icebreakers you know okay my favorite hobby uh is riding a bicycle i love doing it at least a few times a day to get some fresh air and some exercise socialize with some friends okay um so uh then the examiner will introduce the topic of part one uh sometimes the topic of part one can kind of catch you off guard it can be kind of strange for me the examiner asked about maths mathematics it's kind of like okay it's not really something i talk about every day but sure so be ready and here we go the examiner at this point might say something like let's talk about hats and shoes okay well i guess most people at some point in their lives wear hats and certainly most of us wear shoes on a regular basis so um it is a very possible topic on your uh ielts exam so here we go the first question do you like wearing hats all right now on the examiner's sheet they will probably have in brackets why or why not they will only ask you this if you do not include it in your answer so make sure you include this into your answer okay all right uh john's says yes i do hats make my appearance different and many people are astonished by seeing it on my head that's why i wear different hats for special occasions john you have a really big mistake in your response and your original response you say hats make people's appearance different and you say astonished by seeing it on your head we're not actually talking about me and to be perfectly honest jon's i'm not a big hat guy so telling me that it looks good on your head your hat it's kind of like it's a bit awkward i'm not a big hat guy so part one students it's about you make sure that you are using me my i not you and not people okay so really important okay you will lose marks if you don't pay attention to this so this is about you do not use uh people you he she to refer to others refer to yourself in the first person voice i me my myself okay so that's what you want to do is that clear for everyone so that's really really important that's a very very important tip okay yeah everybody's got that i hope because that's very important if you keep seeing you and people and individuals you're miscommunicating with the examiner and you will lose marks okay so as soon as you hear that uh now let's uh talk about shoes and hats and then you hear the do you like to wear hats it has to be clear okay all right perfect um okay flak says i am not too fond of hats because wearing hats is not my cup of tea plus um during the purchase of hats my mind is muddled uh flak you're using a lot of expressions and idioms but [Music] they're a little bit awkward in context don't force idioms okay won't work abhishek says certainly i love to wear caps i would say i have almost uh a collection of ten or more different types of hats as per occasion like a baseball and fedora caps to name a few okay fahim says yes of course hats are great because of their utility they will provide protection against the sun fahim it's about you do you like wearing hats okay uh the answer is not quite clear on whether it's you or just in general okay jalap i'm sorry if i get some of your names a little bit wrong um yes i do i wear hats on summer days uh like today i bought two hats but i do not use them because of the pandemic so i will keep them in storage until i go on vacation okay uh jalpa i kind of changed um your answer a bit so it's more sensible make sure to review that okay anirud says yes of course i do like wearing hats as i have several types of caps like a cowboy hat hip hop cap sportswear whenever i go outside for cycling running or playing in general all right that's pretty good so talking about different types of hats and caps okay vishnu says well to be honest i dislike them i'm not a person who wears hats because my hair looks worse when i remove it however i do rarely wear them the last time i wore my hat was on in my first year of graduation okay vishu um so here we go i occasionally like to wear a hat especially if it serves some kind of purpose i like to go running uh a few times each week and i wear a white uh baseball cap to keep my head cool and uh to keep the sun out of my eyes okay uh so here we go and this is true i do like to run and while i'm running i definitely have uh appreciated wearing a baseball cap so repeat after me again this is speaking so lots of typing going on in the chat and that's fantastic what you want to do is after you type your response or while you're typing your response make sure to speak as well nice and loud so here we go do you like wearing hats i occasionally like to wear a hat especially if it serves some kind of purpose i like to go running a few times each week and i wear a white baseball cap to keep my head cool and to keep the sun out of my eyes all right next question how many pairs of shoes do you have so how many pairs of shoes do you have all right uh give me a nice full sentence again think about answer explanation and example okay so all of those elements are important and students you don't have to be honest so please don't take a minute like one two three yeah i got those with four uh i got a no i threw those out uh seven okay so don't don't start to count up the actual number of shoes if you have lots of shoes like over 10 pairs of shoes then say i've got over 10 pairs of shoes if you have hundreds of pairs of shoes you're a collector then say that if you only have a few pairs of shoes say that but don't actually try to count up all the shoes in your closet okay that's just kind of silly um gineal says i let me think for a minute and count them yeah i have around eight to ten pairs of different types of shoes two formal ones um for uh functionality uh at the office and three to four pairs of sports shoes for hiking gym exercise and football uh very good gineal so you rode two formal shoes for family functions and the office good made a correction there and then three to four pairs of sports shoes sports shoes also sneakers sports sneakers right football it's actually cleats they're called cleats all right okay i'm glad i was able to bring a smile to some of your faces that's great smiling is good students if you smile during the speaking that's a good idea even if you force it you know they say if you're sad just force a smile and you'll be happy it's also true when you're nervous if you're nervous during the aisle speaking interview forced a smile that will help you to build some confidence as well okay shaheel kakar says i have close to 20 pairs of shoes because i like to collect different types of shoes and wear them for different occasions yeah okay um can you give me an example like today this is a formal exam so i'm wearing a nice pair of dress shoes that i picked out before coming here all right uh referring to the present time is a good idea it shows confidence in the language okay tari mo boire says i'm a lover of shoes so i'd say i have um 10 to 15 pairs of shoes because in the past i had to deal with not having any so i started buying as many as i can okay great looks like we have a lot of shoe collectors which is nice okay hemant sharma says i have five pairs of shoes for different purposes i have oxfords for my office couple of sneakers one for hiking and a pair of loafers to stroll in the evening i personally like my new balance sneakers i agree him on i like new balance as well i'm a big fan of new balance shoes because they're fitted not just in length but also in width so if you've got narrow feet like me new balance are great okay jassy says i have a great collection of shoes including sports formal wear and party shoes i would say i have five distinguished pairs of shoes last week i bought another uh pair of adidas sports shoes to go to the gym okay so i would say that i have around 10 pairs of shoes for various purposes i have [Music] dress shoes for formal functions as well as sneakers for running uh hiking boots uh for going outdoors and i have a comfy pair of loafers to mope to uh mope i think it's like that mope around my home right now i'm uh wearing my formal shoes for this exam okay mope mope means you just kind of walk around the house not really doing anything um oh i'll have to find the spelling for that but anyway mope is the word so mope around the house if anybody knows how to smell spell mope you can help me out there all right uh mope uh yeah okay mope thank you david all right um yeah so here we go repeat after me how many pairs of shoes do you have i would say that i have around 10 pairs of shoes for various purposes i have dress shoes for formal functions as well as sneakers for running hiking boots for going outdoors and i have a comfy pair of loafers to mope around my home yeah mope just means you kind of just kind of stroll around your house right now i'm wearing my formal shoes for this exam all right we've got lots of people figuring out the spelling of mope thank you never be my strong suit for spelling that's for sure okay um let's do this so next question uh when do you wear a hat okay when do you wear a hat now here's an interesting tip if you've already given this answer then expand on it okay don't just repeat an answer don't just simply say i already answered that but expand on the answer and connect with what you have already said so when do you wear a hat [Music] aside from wearing a baseball cap for running i also wear a sun hat when i'm at the beach and i have worn some party hats for special occasions uh such as birthdays and uh weddings sure why not okay so again uh here's another important tip okay do not be redundant with your answers okay that means do not give the same answer twice instead connect and expand on your answer okay that's a really really important tip right assad beck says definitely when i need to especially when i need to keep myself from sunburn on the beach uh i can put on a hat or for a photo to look more attractive as long as the hat is beautiful and fits me well okay ivy says to be honest i don't really wear a hat on a daily basis that said i would wear a hat when the sun is boiling hot because it helps to keep the rays out of my eyes also i wear it every now and then as a fashion statement okay angelo no problem better late than never hemant says as i mentioned earlier i live in delhi which uh experiences scorching hot weather so i wear a hat while going out to protect myself from direct sunlight i personally uh prefer my david beckham signed cap which i bought recently whoo hemant fancy david beckham signed hat uh janal says as i mentioned before i'm not really a hat person but i do put on caps during the hot summer days in botswana uh summer in botswanas are unbearable so i need caps and sunglasses to avoid direct sunlight yeah so wearing hats as protective gear if anybody's a fisherman or fisher woman it's probably a time that you wear a hat as well nobody's mentioned rain or not that i've seen so far wearing a hat for rain or as canadians say a toque for the winter for the snow i don't see much of that but i guarantee you if some of you come to canada especially the colder places you will be wearing a hat during the winter to keep your head warm okay so rashika says i usually use a hat on a sunny day in the summer or a cold day in the winter washington gets colder in the middle of the winter especially in december and january so i have to wear a hat to avoid catching a cold yeah rashika there you go absolutely in washington that's just a bit south of the border for me in the winter days you would be wearing a hat to keep your head warm yeah okay next question let's keep it rolling we've got some nice momentum now everyone uh where is a good place to buy shoes notice how the questions are varied so uh when do you wear a hat how many pairs of shoes do you have where is a good place to buy shoes so uh that's kind of how it works um the questions are the different w questions and also the how questions so who what when where why how those are the different questions that you can expect to hear in part one okay angel anjali says there are a lot of places from where i buy shoes for example pvr mall in ludhiana is a great place because it has a giant shoe store i bought a beautiful pair of sandals there just last week students don't forget those smooth flowing examples those will build your fluency grammar vocabulary they will bump up your score so a really really important tip and reminder here okay make sure to include smooth examples into your responses as much as possible don't overdo it uh just one per question okay uh that's because uh these will improve your band score by at least half a band or more okay and by smooth flowing example i mean don't say for example or for instance okay sanjay takur says well most of the time i buy shoes from the dubai mall because there's a great collection of shoes from various uh retailers selling all kinds of brands like nike adidas gucci versace uh i bought a pair of dress shoes there bugattis just last week okay smooth flowing examples um vishnu says there are several places to buy shoes like online through amazon flipkart and offline stores like adidas nike and others where do you buy shoes vishnu you okay don't forget that you part okay uh shashi kiran says in my locality i go to malls usually to buy shoes because they have great options so i can buy the one which i like not we like shashi i probably don't have the exact same uh taste in shoes as you do so the ones that you like okay all right angelo says i often buy my shoes at the mall i usually buy the most extravagant shoes i can find uh that suit my style i carelessly spend a lot of money uh last week i dropped 300 on a pair of sandals okay um so if you're gonna say you carelessly spend a lot of money angelo on shoes give me an example of what that is okay all right a nice fluency again students speak and repeat remember okay uh rajvir says a great place to buy shoes is online e-commerce platforms such as amazon and flipkart i usually get great deals on branded shoes and i choose from a wide range of options okay rajvir that's great um by the way a little trick that i've picked up over the years is something like this so original answers are great anytime that you can do that that's fantastic but not at the expense of making mistakes so i often shop for shoes online as they stores like amazon and flipkart uh offer more competitive pricing to be honest i go to the mall and try on a variety of shoes when i find a pair that suits my stop let's go with both my style and budget i and fits me just right i go back home and order it online okay i bought my last pair of adidas running shoes this way and saved about 20 percent okay so um i'm kind of sharing a fun little uh life hack here for you as well that works sometimes um okay rajvir says haha i always do this so um i often uh shop for shoes online as stores like amazon and flipkart offer more competitive pricing to be honest i go to the mall try on a variety of shoes when i find a pair that suits both my style and budget and fits me just right i go back home and order it online i bought my last pair of adidas running shoes this way and saved about uh 20 okay so that's a little bit of a life hack here for you uh now here are a few more questions what do you wear on your feet in the summer has your style of footwear changed over the years and if you could make a hat what would it look like these questions get a little bit more challenging you can practice these questions with each other on our websites
