hey there boys girls the YouTube world today the dub dog and I'm gonna see if we can't get this stuck Ford flathead runner for the first time and 40 years probably the last time that any other Ford Flat had ever ran what are you doing back there trying to shoot an intro so anyway the story on this phone on Facebook Marketplace it was like six miles down the road uh nice young gentleman is fixing up a 48 to 52 Ford truck like an F4 and F5 I think it's a 51 or two if if you really care they're all the same engine wise cabs the same a little bit different grills listen to this thing no price whatever I kind of knew who he was I said hey I'll give you 50 bucks for that thing he says come get it he had it on a pallet sitting on a tire I'd put it in my run stand so I had to get some help I had the damn it come over help me put it in the Run stand so let's take a look at the notorious Ford flathead the Ford flathead is the first mass-produced V8 in America started in 1932. Henry and Edsel were probably at it and before that they had Flathead four cylinders and I believe the early ones were 85 horsepower and the later ones were 100 horsepower the Mercury's were 110 and they made some 60 horsepower little baby guys in between and there's a lot of information I'm gonna miss uh 53 was the last year of the Ford flathead V8 in the US I think Canada had it in 54. the French were using it in tanks and the military and stuff like into the 90s I think so wee-wee the French as they knows that zephlathead is the best well it was anyway is that French I don't know and basically there's two Ford flatheads that we refer to in the hot rod Community the early ones which are the 8ba excuse me the early ones which are the 59ab which is pretty much like your 46 to 48s and then your later ones which is your 49 to 53 which is your 8va there's some early ones like the 32 to uh whatever basically 45 but War era 42 to 45 wasn't many made there was a few but they made one for military and and I think some of those earlier like the 39 to uh 47 stuff or 39 to 45 stuff they call the 59ab but we'll go over some of those differences but the main the early ones like the 32 through basically 38 were or maybe even 37 were a lot less desirable they're only for like the purists if you're restoring a car if you want a super period correct hot rod from 1935 or whatever but mainly you got your 8ba and your 59ab uh both of those are pretty generic terms so the 8ba was a car engine they made the 8rt which is a pickup engine and the 8cm which is the Mercury version of it Mercury's got a little bit longer they got the four inch stroke crankshaft I think the Fords are three and three quarter I don't remember but you took the Mercury crank and you put it in there boom you had 110 horsepower and uh yeah that was your hot ticket but I mean there was aftermarket uh Magneto's multi-carb intakes camshafts adjustable lifters some overhead valve kits uh aluminum heads all that good stuff all kinds of speed Parts but let's get into this thing and I'll show you some of the stuff that I know about this ABA ending I said it right APA you're not interested in four flat heads okay he said this thing is stuck it was sitting on a pallet I have not tried to turn over because I sent out a pallet so it just flops around flatheads have two water pumps one there one there so then they got two radiator hoses out the bottom one down there and one right here no flexi hoses and then two uh operator hoses one right there one right there these should have thermostats in them so they got dual thermostats this is your road draft tube these are car water pumps you can tell by the way that they are but the car water pumps have these bolt holes right here that bolt through the car the truck which is what they should have should have a flat platform right here on each water pump and that is your engine mount so if you ever have a bad water pump you have to lift the engine up on both the engine mount and then take the water pump off this has this neat little mount on the front I've had I bet I've had 30 or 40 Ford flatheads I've never seen one with that mountain like that I've only seen them on six cylinders but it does look very Factory looking so I don't really know maybe this was a 53 engine I don't know it's green so I guess and there's some numbers on it so I'm guessing it's been rebuilt at one time like I said it's got car water pumps but maybe with that mount on it they went to the parts store and all they could find was car water pumps these things are notorious for overheating issues not because they got two water pumps I think one of the main reason is everybody says it's not a matter of if your Ford flathead is cracked it's how bad that it's cracked but the exhaust runs through the cooling ports and every one of these manifolds is cracked as well they're always cracked always but you can buy reproduction ones or you can buy cast iron aftermarket headers or you can buy headers with tubes you got the boogers in your eyes but you're so you're so pretty after your haircut Duff yeah yes you are there's your water to go boy and your little cute little handkerchief um but yeah with those so the two Center cylinders share an exhaust part so that kind of restricts it and then like I said you got exhaust running through your coolant passages so that's not going to help they got oiled off bone dry hopefully they drained it before we got it dipstick tubes always Loose as well the later engines the 8ba like this have head bolts the earlier engines were studs I believe these are a 24 stud engine easy way to tell a 24 stud from a 21 setup they got two bolts in the middle 24 studs if they got three bolts in the middle 21 studs so it's bass backwards two bolts more studs three bolts less studs but you can basically take you can put these heads on any 24 stud engine and then you can take you could you could swap heads between an ABA and a 59 a b um it's a little it's a lot easier to take the heads off with these bolts because when you've got studs you get all this dirt in between there and it's it's pretty hard to get the heads off they have this terrible oiling system it's I don't even know it's not a full pressure it's it's basically some toilet paper in there and some of the oil goes through not all the oil goes through whatever here's your oil fill that's the front you can tell by the way that it is you can tell that it's an aspen tree because the way it nobody stole the coil so that's handy it's got a generator I think Ford's well anyway you know the flatheads all had generators they never had alternators in the factory this is what I call a Ford carburetor or a Holley 94 carburetor you can also get them with the strombergs I mean the main two covers are the 94 and the 97 the 94 is a Holley where it's got the fuel Inlet up the top and the 97 is a strong rig and the fuel Inlet is in the side and then also there's external yeah something about the the mechanical linkage there's something different for the accelerator pump on the strombergs but look for your fuel uh there's your fuel pump sits up top here you got your sight glass what do you call that sentiment Bowl right there so that's basically your fuel filter said one will work pretty good so the later engines the abas have this bolt-on bell housing adapter the truck ones were cast like this the car ones and the Mercury's were stamped steel they all interchange I believe that bell housing is all one piece on the earlier engine the 59ab it's got an integral bell housing so you don't need this piece they all adapt to the same Ford Transmissions so if you've got a 59ab or an ABA with this adapter you can use the same 39 Ford transmission or whatever looks like somebody either cut off or that broke the mount for our oil filter here's your oil pressure switch I made the stand or buddy made it and then I've modified it since it fits small block Chevy's ls's and flatheads it'll fit anything if we did enough modification it's crude it sucks it's got four swivel casters on it don't ever do that I always just put two swivels and then two station areas because this thing wants to do the Mango Tango with me when I try pushing across the floor just wants to spin in circles uh easy way another easy way to tell what engine you have usually it's so this is an EAB which is basically an 8ba another version of that it'll say it right on the head I think the 59 ABS have it 59ab cast somewhere back in here there really isn't any information on when they were cast or you know stamping numbers on these things like a lot of the small block Chevys worse you never know if it came out of a car or truck it's just a complete crap shoot this manifold might be good probably not you take those bolts out there 7 16 bolt they're pretty prone to Breaking maybe they're three Ace whatever trucks had a different oil pan but after being around for 70 years odds are somebody swapped it at one point I'm guessing this has been through a Rebuilder at one time because it's got a Green Block red heads why they did that I don't know but it seems like all of the job Rebuilders do that sometimes there's a jobber tag on here like a brass tag that'll say if the mains are 10 over or 10 under whatever you want to call it same thing with the uh the rods and Mains and then they'll see if it's bored over thirty thousands forty thousands whatever it is but I don't see a tag on this one and sometimes they're in various spots but usually right back here on the back of the engine on the back of where the cylinder heads bolts on is the most common spot for them the other thing to note is uh where the distributor is at the later engines the ABA they come with the top and their standard style distributor and then the earlier engines the 59ab it sits right here above the crank pulley we've seen those on other engines that we've got running I don't know that we've ever gotten one of these ABA engines run you got the boogie woogies in your eyeballs stuff have we ever got a oh yeah we have the uh red Ford green truck that we got from old snootchy [Applause] I love the smell of a Flathead that's been sitting for 20 years 50 years who knows look at that the old Gates belt it's stamped Gates truck and bus 643 made in the USA that is an old belt she's in pretty sad shape what else can we tell them so yeah you got to have longer water pumps on the this style of engine because the distributor gets in there in the way you gotta have room for that where they're a little bit shorter water pumps on the 59 EB engines but obviously it's a lot easier to set the points on these Distributors versus the ones where they're the crab or the clam shell or the scuba diver there's several different styles of Distributors that are down front and that's why we have the distributor machine for setting up those Distributors on those Fords because a lot of them have dual points and there's really no good way to set the dwell with them on the engine and you guys think you got out of the engine running I don't know I don't know a lot of things about a lot but that's what I know about the differences between the earlier and the later Ford flatheads so I guess let's get crack-a-lackin on this son of a biscuit and let's put a bar on it and see if we can't get this thing turning over I don't know that these guys have had the let's let's just for all the Dwayne's out there let's pull the spark plugs out and let's put a little coil down the cylinder holes and we'll see what happens I can almost guarantee we're gonna pull the heads off this thing because the valves are always stuck on flatheads doesn't matter if it's a Chrysler flat head or any Mopar Flathead or a Ford flathead four-cylinder Chrysler flat head six cylinder fortified V8 there's always stuck valves why I don't really know but they're always stuck if you want to see a good video of getting valves on stuck in a flathead go check out puddin's Fab shop him and I and Bill and Slick got a model a two-door sedan I believe it's a 31 yeah late 31 run in here a few weeks ago and I was turning the crank over and Bill was spraying bill was knocking one Lewis and Slick was spraying the all over them and then pudding was pushing down on one it was yeah it looked like four monkeys doing you know what do a football but uh solid entertainment I guess so that being said that is what's nice about these 8ba engines is the heads come off a lot easier so we'll probably end up pulling the heads up you can do it through the intake but it's just easier to pull the heads off on these later ones the earlier ones it's kind of a crap shoot but you can't it's a lot it's a lot easier to break the valve off with the head off you know as opposed to going through the intake you can't pry and it's a lot harder to break valves off and we are pretty dang good at breaking valves off well that's gonna end the day here at mortgage repair no comment eh all right let's uh get ourselves a socket and put on the crankshaft and see I hate doing that because it's a bolt and it's threaded and you're not supposed to do that but we're gonna do it anyway otherwise yeah there's not really a good way to get on the ring gear back here is there enough is there oh yeah we left that inspection cover off it did not have this adapter I just round that up we're going to need a distributor cap we're gonna need some coil and plug wires and we're going to need a starter like we're gonna have a good Ford flathead starter around here huh we got a few pieces maybe we'll start in there with the bar so we don't have to mess with that nut okay well spark plugs out first good point these spark plugs should be a 13 sixteenths let's see if they all match auto light no champion auto light auto light so mismatched spark plugs are for me kind of a giveaway that maybe one cylinder is burning oil or maintenance lack of Maintenance instead of putting eight spark plugs in people are just cheaper back then so you just put the spark plug in that you needed you bought a single spark plug you didn't put all eight in and spark plugs were really common to swap out like now people go 150 200 000 miles and never put spark plugs in back then I think spark plugs were seasonally or every couple of oil changes this engine being in a grain truck would probably have only been used in the spring and the fall so it's probably pretty low mile the problem with that is uh maintenance would have been limited uh oil changes were probably not uh well scheduled you know they just it's kind of like right now it's spring it's nice out everybody Saturn on all winter nobody had heated shops back ends they just jumped in the truck boom took her off but I've been rambling on for long enough like you guys been listening to me ramble on for like 15 minutes let's pull some spark plugs out and see what we can see crane trucks low miles nobody ever maintain them and they were hauling wheat in August and usually overheated and cooked a lot also using an impact is perfectly fine in spark plugs I haven't screwed anything up yet oh yeah definitely some humiditation going on in there no bueno well that one doesn't look as bad stuff foreign 's real bad and the electrode is smashed so somebody's been in there or something has kissed said electrode I'm starting to wonder if we don't just pull the heads right off the bat I guess that plug wire is not going to do us much good kind of like this spark plug one of the problems with these flatheads is there's no good spot to hook a chain so I'm guessing when they hook the chain up that's when they screwed up the spark plugs I could just be making assumptions though are they all auto lights on this side Duff we just had one lone champion sure did oh one looked really good yeah this Bank looks a lot better I want the busted up guy oh yeah that's interesting something took place on that spark plug it looks like somebody took a flap disc to it grinder of sorts let's take a peek known hole number I think four numbers these one two three four this look down for oh well great grand wonderful great grand wonderful you can see the valve and it's all shiny right there so attack with a little bit we're just going straight to cylinder head removal awesome I'm getting a late start on a video this week and I was hoping to just you know like ah it's just gonna be a little bit stuck we have a couple stock valves we pop the heads out tap on those show you some copper gasket on the head gasket throw a distributor cap on some plugs wires maybe go grab a different carburetor but probably just use this one and bada bing bada boom but we're gonna have to pull the intake and yeah we're gonna have to do some valve train work if you're ever buying a flathead or any engine pull the spark plugs out and see how they look if they look like that yeah definitely ran when parked it ran until it didn't fantastic here we go these are 7 16s head bolts but you got to use an 11 16 socket where usually on 7 16 bolts like this aftermarket when I put in that chain or whatever your standard or 5 8 but for some reason Ford got 11 16 heads on theirs good for them not so good for me dang it I would have thought my 50 Flathead wouldn't be a runner foreign lift flatheads I take this one of these Center bolts out get a little bit longer 7 16 bolt where is our stock [Music] so you can see bolts about an inch longer that's all you got to do be careful so the chain doesn't hit the carburetor you don't want to break that guy that's a bad day it might even be best before pulling an engine out to pull the distributor cap so you don't break that case in point same thing with the carburetor [Music] I think I got all 24 of our bolts out there's one little bolt right here and a retainer for the distributor we got to take that off because it's part of the head but I think we can leave the distributor in there I'm pretty sure it's been a while since I pulled one of these heads off you don't have to take that bolt off on the 59 ABS you can't even hold your eyes open am I that boring over here talking about Ford flatheads this is exciting stuff the birth of hot rodding was from these engines you know this was like this was the ls back in the day do you think anybody harassed anybody for Ford flathead V8 swap and anything back in the day probably not people are just mean now freaking meanie heads there's that little distributor a retainer bracket clip Mount finger oh yeah we definitely have to pull the distributor out I'm an idiot Maybe not maybe not maybe we can turn it far enough we gotta take the vacuum it's not even a vacuum advance it's a vacuum brake it's not a vacuum advance it's a vacuum brake on these floors maybe that's on the earlier ones I don't remember earlier ones are definitely vacuum break but I think these are too I can't remember what they call these but these distributors are easier to work on easier to get at but they leave a lot to be desired in the performance section so a lot of guys will take a small block Chevy or get aftermarket distributor sorts or you can convert to the crab distributor that a 59ab has but you got to swap the front timing cover and the camshaft and then you can run the earlier water pumps and all that it's a lot of work but you can do it the legit traditional hot rodders seem to prefer the 59ab engines then I think these what's it called where they have separate main bearings versus like the rods the two connecting rods that are closest to one another actually share a bearing a rod bearing on the 59ab one of these apas they have separate rods look at what it's called there's a fans full floating yeah I don't I don't know earlier ones I think got that bearing I think a lot of things I don't even I don't even say things anymore because people yell at me because I'm wrong I'm wrong a lot the throttle linkage just kind of Clips on a little ball and socket you just push that guy up pop it on Let It Go Springs in there holds it on the ball and that Holly is stuff stuck should be here should walk right out of there how come these Distributors come out so good and all the late model Ford V8s like the Y blocks and the 302s they just uh get seized in place what's a good way for getting you know somebody asked me that they said my Y block distributor's stuck and I said soak it heat it put a pipe wrench on it if it comes great if not you sometimes got to sacrifice yeah so if you know a good way to get oh my goodness oh my oh my phew that made a little bit of noise uh something was rattling around there for a long time and they ran it they ran it hard so what happened what was in there did the spark plug come off hmm well this little washer I don't know how that got in there but that got in that piston somehow oh here's what happened see it's starting so we're just gonna I think Ford starts one two three four five six seven eight or vice versa it doesn't really matter let's be honest so we're gonna call that four and this is one you can see how number one is starting to get banged up a little bit that's your seat your valve seat they start whoever put them in didn't do a very good job and they started coming loose and bouncing around and I mean this didn't seal up so this thing had to run just terribly in this seat did the same thing and this one rattled around for well long enough till it broke the valve and I think that is what was banging around in there was the seat and there's chunks of the seat that got in there banged up the piston so this thing needs a valve job and it needs all new guides while you're at it you might as well do valves of course you're going to need Pistons you might as well bore it we're going to be into this thing pretty deep if we wanted to fix it upright that being said I don't have a need for this engine I've got a truck sitting out here that we got running that red 51 or 52 that we got from snuch if I need an engine I would just take that one because I can't even sell that truck because nobody wants to buy it but anyway I gotta go Flathead in the yard If This Were an earlier engine I would spend a little bit more time with it I do have a couple of those around but I like those engines better I like 59 abs I don't know what we're gonna do with this thing let's let's open up the other side because I'm guessing the same guy who did the valve seats on this side did them on that side and this thing hadn't been so down on power because your exhaust is right here so that's your exhaust on number four looks like something might be going on with the intake on number four but then your exhaust well number one is kaput as well so this thing could have been running great I mean it was running around six at best it does have some Ford valves in there at least yep this is actually common this is probably like the third engine that I've taken apart where this has happened but man yeah she was really banging around in there all right let's pull the other side part that almost looks like it wasn't that long ago but you could I mean they run her for a long time with that thing broken off look at how smooth that brake is it's not jagged man this thing added I would have loved to hear this thing running that being said I mean if we get it loose it should run the same way as it did when they parked it wow like I said grain trucks maintenance operators just Runner till she blows [Music] [Music] [Music] thank you the other side you got to deal with the distributor then on the driver's side you gotta deal with the oil filter I don't even know if this thing should be considered an oil filter because they don't do a whole lot [Music] another problem with Ford flatheads overheating is debris and everything in the cooling system because a when they were sand casted there's a lot of sand and steel and other debris inside of the blocks that never got out of there and the other thing is cooling cooling coolant was not as good back then plus people ran water water created a rust stuff like that and then the water pumps weren't as efficient the fin design and the fins and the way they sealed and stuff I guess they've got a lot better technology and even these updated water pumps you can get for them and pretty good example of that is right there you can see all that rust in that thermostat housing let's get that head off see how she looks what do you think Duff is head gonna be any better I'm gonna take all the bolts off what the french toast let's get a bar there we go she's ugly well a lot of our head gasket stayed with the block but I don't know why this side is such terrible shape look at how Rusty that valve is all the corrosion on top of that piston well the good news don't see any valve seats out where they're not supposed to be so positive outlook let's get that cleaned up see what happens [Music] I was barely touching that thing she broke off and as you can tell that right there was all that was holding it that had been broke for a while so our V8 is now down to five cylinders things are going great that's Graham I love valves valves love me that I don't know if it was the spark plug being out I bet it was humidity or mice coming through the exhaust because you got your exhaust here this is your exhaust passageway so you got it that goes through the whole water jacket right there comes out here it's got this whole water jacket over here just as encapsulated hence the heating issue but mice must came up the exhaust and it's the only the two bad cylinders which would be this one which is we're calling six and eight but exhaust is Open Exhaust was open and the mice got crap in there I'm blaming on the mice it's always the mice look at how Rusty that valve is that one looks real good and that's an intake intake was open not a problem not a problem heck we're at it we might as well pull the intake off a lot of times the mice like to get into those things too and we'll see some nests they'll come up through this silly Road draft tube get up in there so let's pull the intake off what the heck you having fun yet Duff he wants nothing to do with me don't blame him so there's this big nut right here and that will drop the alternator generator and fan or you can take these two little guys and that will just drop the fan so we're gonna take the big one off and get all the belts loose I think it's a 70s we say oh what a good guess I maybe have taken a couple of these apart this is not your standard 7 8 nut I know it's on 70 it's not that's the outside dimensions what is it half inch five eighths man's I got a ton of threads I don't know what they call these nuts but it shredded the entire way and the heck sticks way out on the end so that's a special mud don't lose that if you're ever gonna put it back together all right oh yeah belt wasn't even seized down there too bad the grooves are not shiny so clearly it's been a couple days since that belt turned let's give the old snifferoo to some generator wires we don't need those where we're going let's lift this fan generator assembly out you're supposed to oh yeah there's a square washer in there too that guides everything come on meow all right meow there we go and right there is that square washer I was talking about don't lose that guy because you can't just run the hardware store and grab one of them either not my hardware store anyway maybe you got a better one than me let me get the road draft tube out of the way there should be a bolt of the water pump right there 3 8 bolt 9 16 socket definitely no debris in the water pumps either they're just fine some of these water pump pulleys are stamped like that one some of them are cast like that one and both of these guys are locked up tight every one of these things that you get running the water pumps leak it's just the way that it is and I think the cheap ones are like 150 bucks and the good ones are a few hundred so you could spend more on water pumps for these flatheads than you can for an entire running small block Chevy and maybe that's why people go with small block Chevys just saying oh your other worthless information if you've ever taken these water pumps off and anybody who's done it guarantee you can attest to this there's one bolt that goes directly through here and it's usually rusted off so it rounds off when you do try to take it off but most people the first time they do it forget about it and our prying on it can't figure out why this water pump won't move it's because there's a bolt right through there because oh Henry was sneaky put her in there so yeah you need to find some type of extraction tool usually because they're so Rusty now ready to pull the intake I think I'm going to pull the carburetor off first it's just three bolts and then this fuel line here so that it's a lighter and easier to handle but B so that we don't damage it and so that we can have it for safe keeping but we just got these 3 8 bolts around the perimeter both sides don't have to do anything with the fuel pump or push rods it shouldn't be in our way oh it's made by AC oh yeah GM parts is acgm I guess they were a third party probably still are all right I think you can get this back one with a socket but the other two you got to use a range I don't know that one you get out with socket the other two you gotta get another wrench either way grab a half inch wrench find thread nuts fun stuff we talked about 20 minutes ago that we never got to use in the cylinders shout out to our coil sponsor Keith Benoit line wrenches never heard of them these actually have a brass knots on the end of the line so probably should because they round off pretty easy this is actually the nicest hex that I've ever seen I'm going to show you it's so nice look at that amazing hex right there yeah usually all these are rounded off from Farmers using pliers and then the float their needle and seat sits right here so they're just beat to snot from guys whacking with rocks and Hammers and cattle femurs whatever they got available shotguns pistols knives you know anything's a hammer if you got a nail or everything's a nail if you got a hammer how does that go yeah okay let's get this carburetor off [Music] thank you [Music] all right our gasket oh that didn't be salvageable there's our fuel pump push rod runs on a lobe on the camshaft like is comment on pretty much everything with a mechanical fuel pump all right Let's Get Serious with this gasket always remember to put that back in there or it'll be a bad day ask me how I know there we go salvageable it's kind of sad because it's really clean in here there's a little bit of sludge build up in there but sludge is really bad because the oils back in the day and like I said those filtration systems are left a lot to be desired it's got the stock lifters in it these are Hollow solid lifters if you had a high performance camshaft or a regrown camshaft they make adjustable lifters I think Johnson was a pretty common brand and those would have like an adjustment nut up on the top with some holes in the side to retain it so you can adjust that nut up and down so that you can adjust your valves yeah overall everything looks pretty good I wish the rest of the engine looked as good as it does in here like I said a lot of times there'll be just a astronomical amount of sludge in here and then mice will either get in through the oil pan if that's left exposed there's a clean out on the bottom of the oil pan or they'll come up the road draft tube and I'll more often than not this is plum full of Mouse house so we got lucky there and this is how you get the valves out of these things there's a removable valve guide you pry down on the spring and then there's a little clip right there let's get a light in there show the people so this is how you remove the valves on these there's a removable guide right here that comes out and there's a couple of Keepers that hold the spring and everything assembled so the way to do it is pry down on this spring and hopefully your guide is not stuck in the block which it almost always is and then you just take a little hook tool hook on this clip pull it out and the whole assembly will slide out the top oh we might as well try that on this guy and this guy because yeah they need to come out anyway I'll show you how much fun they are yeah those holes are all the way through the piston so this thing was going to have a lot of blow by if it did run there's some markings on the piston it's back oh and then it's banged up see if we can see anything on this side no too corroded over here you see they got a mark That's The Mark towards the front of the Piston so they're all installed the correct way all right let's uh let's let's do some valve train stuff what the heck why not that's that's really the most interesting part about the insides of these engines is the valve train and by interesting I mean it's interesting for you to watch they suck to work on you need special tools and when they're when that when these engines were running back in the day and lubricated and went through heat Cycles they came apart easy but as you know these engines are well the last engine was made 70 years ago you know for production in North America so these things been sitting for quite a while so these guys are usually real stuck and it's not a lot of fun I've had to torch several of them out so that's always an option let me show you what we got going on here there's a Groove you can barely see it right there on the valve guide you can see that one a little bit easier but we're gonna stick our tool in there push on that area right there and then we're gonna Slide the guide down against the spring it's going to compress the spring because the spring can't go down any further because it's pushed up against this retainer which has the retainer Clips which is attached to the valve which is sitting on top of the lifter which is sitting on top of the camshaft so it can't go anywhere so we're gonna get in there sneak it between the spring hopefully Slide the guide out of the block and then we're going to take this little hook tool and pull that guy out of there and then the guide should come right out the top but it never works that well here's the tools we got to do it it's the same tool this one just has the fork on the one end this one had them on both ends but this end is broke and this end you can see what we got going on here there's a lot of companies that make these you can still buy them from like Speedway Motors probably buy some cool old ones like this on the old eBay if you really wanted to but we'll see how this goes so this Tool's got an elbow in it you want that elbow facing up so that you can pry against the bottom of the block you gotta be careful so you don't break the ears off these guides too so it's kind of tricky by tricky I mean I'm pretty good at breaking these my camera is Right Where I don't want anywhere I want it there much better you guys can't see as well but at least I can maybe get in here oh we're gonna have to do another one will get them there better okay you can see this tool is already cracked out it gets stuck in there pretty good hopefully you can see that crack right there on the edge so I'm gonna fit in there better there we got a pretty good bite now should be able to push down and probably break the guide because that's what happens oh boy I'm literally picking the wheels off the ground on this engine stand that's how stuck it is but yeah all that rust around there so that's the valve you can't beat on that but we can beat on the guide how can we do that we can spray some squirrel piss on it that'll help let's take this half inch American deep socket tap on that guy so we can't freed up smaller socket simmer down to 3 8. that's a pretty nice tight fit on that valve stem you can feel it moving oh yeah so you can see this retainer is tied against the bottom of the block this one's down this little ways oh I can even spin it around see if we can't sneak it out of there well not quite enough we'll tap it a little bit more [Music] now we should be able to fish that retainer out or not got it you see how that retainer is just a c-clip the problem is now if everything was lubricated you should be able to just pull the valve in the guide everything right out but since it's so Rusty it doesn't want to pop right up so let's spray some lube in there and keep tapping see what happens you just won't take this guy out of there because he's not going to do us any good and that's as far as we're gonna be able to go down with it because that spring is compressed to nothing but you can see where that Groove is and you can almost see there's a Groove above it that's got a seal I think that's I don't know valve guide seal sure maybe I don't know but you see just so much sludge is in there there's a great big Ridge of rust and whatnot so we gotta get that knock out of there before we can get the guide to come out this direction anyway foreign device and see if we can't pry that guide back up and out where it needs to go definitely using this tool not like it's designed to be used oh there we go back to where we started anyway right up where we started big dog out here [Music] there we go [Music] foreign there she is one Ford flathead valve guide spring retainer and most of the valves down just no head to the valves what they call it a valve head let's take it apart the rest of the way what the heck I think if we gave this valve guide some heat you see how it's I think it should be the same height all the way around and how it's all deteriorated from I don't know condensation or mouse piss one or the other if we give it a little heat it would probably just slide right off but I want to heat it up because then it's going to ruin that valve spring because you know we're so concerned about that valve spring we're going to try something here it's never a good plan we're trying stuff is it Duff I think oh nope that won't work son of a and let's be honest that guide is smoked I was thinking that that would fit in that oh it kind of fits in there let's see what happens I don't have much faith it's moving anyway foreign s now we should be able to go through the middle there still need more hands though there let the spring do the work so close foreign ers Keepers you know what they're called valve keeper there's two of those guys and what these guys are they just got a little tiny groove in there and you can see they're tapered and they sit in that groove on the end of the valve stem and this guy slides up over them also is tapered so that holds them in place and the spring cup pushes against that and the spring pushes against that so all you do is compress the spring put that all together and then the spring holds tension that's what holds it all in place a little bit more tapping to do huh there we go here's what's less of our valve stem and there is our valve guide I believe there should be a seal around that maybe that's only on the intake side I don't know that was all kinds of fun yep that gate is definitely smoked but we saved some of the other pieces you don't find pulling forward Flathead valve trains apart very entertaining all right you just hang out on your nice clean bed over there not on our dirty floor let's do the same thing on this guy smack it down get a retainer out of there and pry it back up [Music] when I tapped on that guide with the socket it actually sprung down and back up so maybe we got a chance on removing this valve guide the way that Henry intended them to be oh yeah it's lit right now get her hook I always wanna a good hooker on when you're working on a flathead here we go easy peasy lemon squeezy and the reason that is because that side was stuck because of condensation this side or this side was broke because of condensation this side is broke because of just lack of Maintenance and Brute Force now let's see if we can push that guy there we go popped right up there and you can see this guide is the same height right here all the way around yeah that other one was just all rusted off all right let's go take this one apart in the bench can't find my valve spring compressor well I guess if you don't look you're probably not gonna find it foreign ER and the keepers are all sticking together and usually they come apart be careful with springs kids you buy one of these cool Milwaukee knives yet pretty handy not handy enough what the heck really should have a valve spring compressor which is basically just like a pliers that goes in here grabs that spring compresses it does what we did here but I can't find mine this one's going to slide right apart yeah this one was nice and free in there so we got one shot valve guide two shot valves we need a bunch of seats and that requires a special tool to cut them in there so I don't know what we're gonna do we're gonna have a sandwich to think about it hey Duff all right a little story time here like I said these flatheads always have stuck valves so that valve would have been stuck had it not broke on us but I had one of these valves it was just miserable stuck I did everything I could so what I ended up doing was torching around the stem cutting the head off so that I could get access at the stem I could not get this guide to move in the bore I busted the clip on the bottom of that that Groove that pulls it out I even busted the bottom of the valve so I get the spring off and then finally I ended up just cutting or breaking the the bottom of the valve stem off cutting the spring and tapping it out the bottom and it was just absolutely miserable that valve was so that valve was stuck down not up it was stuck down it was stuck down so hard here's the here's your standard lifter and let's just it's Hollow I don't know how they manufacture these things but super light you know you think that thing would weigh a lot it really doesn't uh this one for some reason had oiling passages in it I'm guessing that's what those passages were but uh again Hollow but you could see where these they don't have a push rod the valve stem rides right on these lifters and you can see where it pushed a hole right through that thing so I like to save this stuff because it's like you know offerings to the gods of speed like Burt Monroe and world's fastest Indian new tires again Monroe yes Bert says [Music] that and if you haven't seen world's fastest Indian with Burt Monroe go check it out really good video but yeah I like save that stuff because it's a good conversation piece it's kind of like spark plugs that you took out of a three valve 5.4 liter there's also some of those in that same bin let me know if you want to see those someday you don't want to go through the process if you have you know what I mean so what are we going to do next Duff you know other than a complete valve job I did see we broke off a head bolt pretty minor detail we're going to need two pistons for sure and we probably should board out but let's see if we can get this thing turned over that being said again it turned over I feel like for sure this valve on what is it number eight we're calling it I think that intake and the intake on number seven six are going to be stuck down as well but let's try let's try prying on it you know what we can do screw anything up let's spray some Looby Doo down those cylinders now which we should have done from the start but I'm gonna slide that back in there otherwise we're just going to hang on to this engine as a donor the one thing that is left that could be a valuable item is that this has got a four inch Mercury crank those are worth a few bills but we have to get it cranking over to measure The Stroke of it or we have to turn it over and pull the oil pan and there's ways to identify that it's a Merc crank so let's see if you can get this thing turning over if it'll turn over it would be a builder if it's not cracked or how bad it's cracked but we'll see unfortunately I think this thing is basically just Parts it does have can't remember if all of them have the aluminum front cover I think some of them are cast iron this one is aluminum so I mean it's got that going for us and I don't know that the earlier ones have that timing mark but this one's got the timing mark on it all the eight Bas do for sure 70 socket on our oh I don't know what this is 30 inch breaker bar yep just turns the bolt a little biscuit oh my gosh look at how Rusty the ring gear is on the flywheel from The Mouse House well let's see if we can get a bar in there and pry on that a little bit well it seems okay foreign it's trying but not looking good because I'm worried about those valves sticking I think we're going to pull the timing cover off we're going to pull the front pulley off the crank and we're gonna pull that timing cover off we're gonna pull the camshaft gear off that way we're not fighting the valve train with those sticky Valves and then we should be able to hopefully at least get the crank turn and get the Pistons moving up now and then we'll see what we got for a stroke insert Billy Squier music I'll wait that's copyrighted dang it we don't want to get demonetized all right no Billy Squier today you guys just have to sing in your head you better put our bolt on there put our three job putter on there so I don't wash your sound a rough life I don't know what happened there but he does not want to come off that Bolt and of course I don't have a fine thread bolt that size laying around to just use we gotta get the washer off of this one there we go let's Shredder bolt back in there I think the pulley will come right past it if we get it to budge these are a stamped steel pulley so prying on them is not ideal or pulling on them or pretty much any so of course that means we're going to do exactly that he's in rice just hang on all you got to do just hang on is it not pulling straight What's your deal oh just need a little Tap Tap Tap Room tap it in just tap it in give it a little tappy tap tap tap a rule [Music] I don't think those go into that front cover I can't remember yeah let's pry it off see what happens worst case scenario we just break the nice aluminum timing cover I was just bragging about of course we've got the biggest bar I own got it really nothing special about this timing cover it basically holds your front seal seals here and then the biggest thing is it retains your distributor or guides the distributor doesn't really retain it again I think they make these in Castile so a woman was a little bit more desirable lightweight go fast things here we've got our crankshaft timing gear which is steel and then this is a fiber gear that is on our camshaft this gear on the very end of the camshaft that's what turns your distributor you'll notice that the cam gear is twice the diameter has twice as many teeth as the crank gear that's because it's a four cycle engine four-stroke so one rotation is for your intake stroke and one rotation is for your exhaust stroke makes sense yeah there should be a mark on here that you would line up if you were putting it back together but since this thing doesn't turn over I'm not worried about that there's these little keeper tabs that hold these four 5 16 bolts in place so I got to bend those keeper tabs over and then we can take these bolts out and we should be able to pop that gear right off the reason that these timing gears are fiber instead of Steel is so that they uh will mesh and wear better and then they're significantly quieter if you've ever heard of a Pete Jackson Gear Drive and a overhead valve V8 like a small black Chevy you just hear him sounds like somebody's power steering pump whining it's because it's metal on metal gears and that's why they use chains and belts and such just so for where and for noise and if you get a stock valve on something like this it'll actually strip these gears out so it hopefully prevents damage to it gonna take my handy dandy screwdriver here and these tags over cheese and rice foreign little fine thread bolts with that I don't know shoulder it's not really a shoulder I suppose let's get bolt stretch in there what I'm saying is they're special bolts don't lose them probably use a shallow socket to get them off so you don't round them off like that all right there's that keeper retainer plate whatever basically it's got these metal tabs that you just Bend up against the hex on the bolt so they can't back out on you because if those come loose that's a bad day oh he's got an aluminum hub in the center silent oh that's pretty neat how neat is that silent like it doesn't make any noise but they spelled it with a C and that's aftermarket Ford was really good about branding things so I should say four down if it was theirs again not much to see in here that is our cam shaft um if we had all of our valves out our lifters out that would slide out at this time but there's going to be tension on them with the valves that are open and so that won't slide out so yeah great grand wonderful obviously the earlier engines the 59ab don't have that gear on there because there's just a Groove in the front and it's a it's offset on the center so that's what your distributor rides on is that Groove so you can't put it on backwards that is the nice part about those other engines is you can't put the distributor on 180 degrees off it'll only go one way with the cam so there's really no timing to set on those so now we should just be working with the Pistons no valve train I'm not saying it's going to turn over but maybe we'll increase our odds that hurt dang it well kids I tried prying on that thing it does not want to budge I could heat up the Pistons on this side because I'm guessing that's where it's sticking up but really at this time there's no point in doing that because we know we got two valves that are going to need seats there's probably some other seats that are on their way out we're going to need two valves and guides plus there's several on this side that I know are going to be stuck we got a hole in that piston and this piston is pretty mashed up so really at this point this thing needs a full rebuild and I mean full and that's if it's not cracked from you know being overheated or having water left in it and we need water pumps and all that so this thing's pretty much just Parts at this point so I mean there's rods there there might the only thing is if we got to turn it over we could measure to see if there's a four inch Mercury crank in it but I don't really I'm devastated at this point so I can't I can't I can't can't go any further it's killing me so thank you very much for watching you cannot win them all I was hoping it was we had a late start this week we were gonna you know get a quick video banged out and I I guess it was pretty quick but it was pretty disappointed so it's just like life you know not every engine you get is gonna work all right thank you very much for watching check out another video uh stay tuned morski.com we will have some merchandise in there shortly maybe next week maybe the week after I don't know remember this when I get done as long as you're having fun tear yourself apart it's fun hopefully you learned something about Ford flat heads because that's how you learn is by doing it [Music] thank you [Music] are you done making noise over there or what quick Banger yeah life's hard
