alert barking this is the kind of barking that happens when you know the doorbell rings or when the mailman is approaching um alert barking is really the reason why people actually brought dogs into their lives in their homes so many years ago because their ears are so sensitive that they can hear things when they're approaching and you know give us a warning so alert barking in a sense is actually a good thing personally I love it I love the fact that my dog does alert bark that he lets me know when someone is out there that I don't know about at the same time it can get rather annoying if you can't get it to stop so alert barking is essentially a a warning bark and it's letting you know that something you know the dog is saying hey something's not right all right how do we stop it well here's the thing with alert barking before we teach the dog to stop alert barking we're actually going to put The Barking on a command so we're going to teach the dog to bark at the same time we teach them to be quiet so first what you're going to want to do is pick a word pick a word that means uh you know for your dog to bark I use alert you can say bark you can say you know uh wolf you you can use whatever you want it doesn't matter you could say blue you could say you know chalkboard you could say picture frame you could say whatever you want it's just a sound that we're going to we're going to going to teach the dog means do this action which is bark okay I use lert so here's what happens uh we do something that we can um you know trigger and practice by getting the dog to bark I'm going to use the doorbell as an example because that's very common or knocking um it's very common that many dogs bark at the doorbell or at the knocking I know my dog does so I would go inside and be inside with my dog I have somebody on the outside ring the doorbell doorbell Rings my dog starts to bark bark bark bar bark I say Max alert and he's bark Max alert he's barking going crazy then what I'm going to do while he's barking is I'm going to take a very good smelly treat and the treat in my hand is going to go right down in front of his nose and I'm going to hold it there all right and then that's when the magic happens because dogs can't bark and smell at the same time don't ask me why I don't think actually humans can't do it either take a chance take a second and try to try to bark and inhale you can't do it just you're physically it doesn't work so because I have a treat and that's much more exciting than barking he's automatically going to stop barking and that is when I say the word quiet or you can say whatever you want enough shush so I say alert and I say quiet and then we repeat someone's on the outside rings the doorbell the dog starts to bark Max alert alert I get a treat quiet now here is the key when the treat goes down and you put it in front of his nose you have to wait for two seconds okay that is critical wait minimum for 2 seconds of quiet then you say the word and then you give them the treat okay and then the treat comes after after the word all right so bring the doorbell bar alert bar treat Bark Bar Bar Bar Bar Bar Bar Bar quiet and there you go right and then it takes practice then you practice this and you do this then in real situations the next time that the doorbell rings for real because it's the UPS man or the mailman the dog's barking good boy alert b bar tree goes down sniff sniff sniff sniff sniff sniff sniff quiet okay and you do this for you know couple of weeks two to three weeks and then you're going to test it you're going to test it once when your dog is just you know hanging out with you look at him and say dog and your word alert bark wolf and see if he does it if he does it then that means he's got an that part down so then while he's barking try the quiet word and you can use whatever again quiet Shish enough right um and if he gets it great then test it out in the real world next time that the doorbell rings and he's barking you don't say alert you just simply say quiet and see what happens see if he stops barking if he does great you give him a treat reward him let him know that's good that's what we wanted and you continually reinforce that if he doesn't do it then you just need to practice some more we just go back to the same theme of practicing The Barking on command and practicing treat going in front of his nose he smells it for 2 to 3 seconds and then we stay quiet and then give it a couple more weeks and then test it again dogs usually pick up on this pretty quickly because like I said you know treats are a much higher value than you know the fun of barking okay so that is alert barking now eventually you can use alert barking um you know outside for sometimes it can help with aggression issues if if you're having um leash aggression or leash reactivity teaching your dog the quiet command is very useful so it does have some other applications you know might just stop barking at the mailman stop barking at whoever is out front um in the car you have a dog that's aggressive in the car the quiet command is nice so you can use it definitely some other places all right okay so that's alert barking and the bark on command and stop barking on command it's exactly what it sounds like your dog is barking because he's bored and if your dog is Bored the only person we have to blame is ourselves so if you have a dog who
