How to Receive the Baptism with the Holy Spirit

[Music] hello this is David Egan Hernandez and you're watching spirit church on the encounter TV network did you know that many believers leave the power of the Holy Spirit laying dormant in their lives they lack power and prayer they lack power in ministry they lack power in holiness so I want to give you the key to the power filled Christian life it's the baptism with the holy spirit that's what I'm talking about as I continue my series on the Holy Spirit but first Stephen Moctezuma is here with me he's gonna lead you in some very anointed worship and then we're gonna get right into this message here is Stephen Moctezuma what things have has your love has the same your constant craze the cornerstone things that we thought would be breathing in again you cause your sun shine and darkest night for all that you've done we will pour out a love this will be a random song Jesus we love you oh how we love [Music] you are a hearted or Jesus we love you oh how we love [Music] you are a heart sad or [Music] [Music] so in order to understand how the baptism with the Holy Spirit works you must first understand that you are a spirit who has a soul that lives in a body 1st Thessalonians chapter 5 verse 23 says this now may the God of peace make you holy in every way and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again so man is not a trinity but there are three aspects to his nature now it's important that you understand this because this is a foundational truth upon which you can build your understanding of the baptism with the holy spirit so let's take a look at these components or these aspects of man's nature in 1st Corinthians chapter 6 verse 19 the Bible says what you know you not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you which ye have of God and he are not your own people know what the father looks like as described in Revelation we know what Jesus looks like as described in the New Testament at least to some degree but people often ask what does the Holy Spirit look like and well I have various different thoughts on this subject I also believe that you are the body of the Holy Spirit in the earth today you are his vessel in the earth right now so your body though it is decaying though it is temporary still is the house of the glory of God it is the host of the presence of the Holy Spirit the Holy Spirit dwells in you your physical body is not in and of itself evil it can actually become a holy dwelling place for God and wherever you walk like the Ark you can carry the presence of God wherever you go your body can become a point of contact for the tangible power of God for those around you now your body is your earth suit your body is how you interact with the world around you it's how you experience all of the senses it's how you exist in this realm in the earthly realm whereas your soul is the realm of decisions it is your mind your will your emotions your personality the soul primarily consists of mind what you think your will what you desire your emotions what you feel this portion of your physical being or this portion of your nature I should say really is the deciding factor it is the neutral ground you can either choose in your soul to live in the spirit that's an inward life or live in the flesh or live in the body that's an outward life and by the way be careful whenever you use the word flesh sometimes the flesh in the New Testament is describing the physical body which is the temple of the Holy Spirit and sometimes the word flesh is describing your sin nature or the carnal nature or that which desires against the spirit don't confuse the two so when you try to connect with God from this realm your soul it's emotional it becomes new ageism almost pagan in a way now the Bible says in Matthew chapter 10 verse 28 don't be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul rather be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in hell now you notice here that Jesus does not mention the spirit only the soul in the body can experience hell because those who are alive in the spirit actually are heaven bound so we see the body which is your earth suit you experience all the senses the soul the mind the will the emotion is the neutral ground your personality the realm of decision you could live from the inside out of the outside in and then we move down to your spirit now your spirit is your connection with God your spirit is your source of identity your spirit is where fellowship takes place 24/7 with the Holy Spirit whether you're aware of it or not and if you're a believer your spirit has come to life before you came to Christ you had no spirit you were just a soul and body and when you received Christ the Holy Spirit came to dwell with you United with you in one spirit and brought your spirit to life and now you have a connection with God internally you are in fellowship with God internally you have revelation of the father internally you have an anointing the Bible says in first Corinthians chapter 2 beginning at verse 9 no eye has seen no ear has heard and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him but it was to us that God revealed these things by his spirit for his spirit searches out everything look at that his spirit searches out everything and shows us God's deep secrets no one can know a person's thoughts except that person's own spirit and no one can know God's thoughts except God's own spirit and we have received God's spirit not the world spirit so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us when we tell you these things we do not use words that come from human wisdom instead we speak these words given to us by the spirit using the spirit's words to explain spiritual truths but people who aren't spiritual can't receive these truths from God's Spirit it all sounds foolish to them and they can't understand it for only those who are spiritual can understand what the spirit means those who are spiritual can evaluate all things but they themselves cannot be evaluated for who can know the Lord's thoughts who knows enough to teach him that's rhetorical but then it answers but we understand these things for we have the mind of Christ here the Holy Spirit is referred to as the mind of Christ the Holy Spirit in you is the mind of Christ in you the Holy Spirit understands the father and your spirit you understand the father the Holy Spirit is in perfect union with the father and the son so in your spirit you're in perfect union with the father and the son now I know at times it may be difficult to identify as a child of God because you look at what you're doing externally and sometimes we make mistakes and sometimes we falter but whenever you find yourself faltering you can always rest assured that your identity rest within your spirit and not externally this of course is by no means an excuse to go on sinning this is just a means by which we can ground ourselves in the truth that we belong to God so the depths of God are known by the Holy Spirit all that may be known of God his mind his nature everything is power it's all known in the spirit and therefore because you are connected with the Holy Spirit in your spirit you to have that understanding so why is it that you have trouble comprehending it well because revelation has not been given revelation I define like this revelation is when that which you know in your spirit becomes understanding in the natural mind that's revelation so we have that mind the spirit is the mind of Christ you already know God you already have power you already have revelation people often say oh I need more of the power of the Holy Spirit no you don't we said oh I need more of God no you don't we said Oh Holy Spirit I want to draw closer to you now I understand the lingo I use that lingo to for the sake of communication but technically speaking biblically speaking you can't get any closer to the Holy Spirit than you are right now now you may see that as bad news but that's not bad news that's really good news because the holy spirit already dwells in you I'm already connected with him in my spirit so my spirit I I know him in that realm my spirit I have fellowship with him my soul I make decisions based upon what's happening in me internally my thought process my attitude and that manifests itself in the physical realm my body because my body will always follow where my mind goes so the Bible says in 1st Corinthians chapter 6 verse 17 but the person who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him so that perfect union is already mine I'm already in perfect union with the spirit Psalm chapter 42 verse 7 says deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me that deep calling unto deep is God's Spirit calling unto your spirit perfect Union perfect oneness so all that God has for you is already yours it's not a matter of you getting more of the Holy Spirit it's a matter of the Holy Spirit getting more of you you say how can he get more of me if I'm already one with him in my spirit we'll remember you are a spirit who has a soul that lives in a body this then is what the baptism with the Holy Spirit truly is it's that flood from within now this begs the question well when do I receive the Holy Spirit I received him at Salvation why then do I need this secondary experience the baptism with the Holy Spirit think about this salvation is a work of the Holy Spirit Romans chapter 8 Ephesians chapter 1 tells us that the Holy Spirit is very much involved in the process of salvation or in the moment of salvation or in the miracle of salvation however you want to define that but the Holy Spirit must be present at salvation if the Holy Spirit is not the one working in you then the Holy Spirit cannot produce that result of salvation therefore if I am saved it means I already have the Holy Spirit so this then again begs another question why on earth would I need a second experience in John chapter 20 verse 22 Jesus breathes on the disciples and says received the Holy Spirit now Jesus breathes on you and says received the Holy Spirit you're going to receive the Holy Spirit why then do these same disciples have to wait in Acts chapter 2 for the coming of the Holy Spirit this got me thinking after Saul's conversion Ananias referred to him as brother Saul yet he couldn't have been his brother unless he was a child of God and he couldn't have been a child of God unless he had the Holy Spirit yet even saw when he became Paul had to receive the Holy Spirit so he became his brother he already had the Holy Spirit and then he had hands laid on him and received the Holy Spirit seemingly again this can be confusing to some I know it was confusing to me at the beginning but look here I want to show you something Acts chapter 19 verse 1 says this while Apollo's was in Corinth Paul travelled through the interior regions until he reached Ephesus on the coasts where he found several believers okay so they're believers they're people who put their faith in Christ they're people who actually responded to the gospel message already this is what the Bible says did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed he asked them no they replied we haven't even heard that there is a Holy Spirit so there we see believers who still had yet to receive the Holy Spirit now wait a minute they're called believers because they have the Holy Spirit yet they also need to receive the Holy Spirit then think again of Paul the Apostle who was called by Ananias brother saw meaning he was a child of God meaning he had the holy spirit he still had to receive the Holy Spirit when Ananias laid hands on him so this seems like a contradiction how can this be solved it's very simple first we must settle this truth the Holy Spirit is received at salvation that's a biblical fact you can't get around that again some references for that Romans chapter 8 verse 9 and then verse 14 through 16 Ephesians chapter 1 verses 13 through 14 the Holy Spirit is present salvation this is that this is the truth of the matter so how do we get around this supposed contradiction it's very simple you have to understand what baptism is baptism is to be submerged that's the best picture I can paint for you is when somebody actually goes underwater the act of baptism with water that's the word baptism you go under your submerge to overcome think of the Titanic they thought the Titanic would never sink because they could compartmentalize if ever there was a flood so when floodwaters would come into one room they were able to shut off or so they thought that flow of water from getting to the rest of the ship by closing certain special doors they had made they found that just wasn't the case so the Titanic sank and was submerged was baptized because it was first filled with the water weighted down and then overcome with the water so baptism is to be completely immersed in completely immersed in water or completely immersed in the Holy Spirit when I'm baptized in the Holy Spirit it means that I have been flooded within and it's overflowing to where I'm submerged in it now so the Holy Spirit is received at Salvation he's released at baptism what do you mean released remember we talked about body soul spirit what is your inner man your inner man is the spirit where is the Holy Spirit in your spirit John chapter 7 verse 38 he that believeth on me as the scripture hath said out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water verse 39 but this spake he of the Spirit which they that believe on him should receive for the Holy Ghost was not yet given because that Jesus was not yet glorified here it is in the NASB a little bit more clear he who believes in me as the scripture said from his what innermost being will flow rivers of living water but this he spoke of the Spirit whom those who believed in him were to receive so out of my innermost being what does that mean innermost being is talking about my spirit my inner man body outer man soul spirit innermost outer body inner soul innermost spirit body soul spirit the flood begins from within their form the baptism of the Holy Spirit is not rained from heaven it's a river from within me it's a river from the Holy Spirit within me and that river flows out of my spirit touches my soul and then overflows into my body so the baptism of the Holy Spirit is not necessarily just speaking in tongues and I will deal with speaking in tongues in the next session but this is important that you grasp because this again is a foundational truth the baptism of the Holy Spirit is both a one-time occurrence and a continual state of being Ephesians chapter 5 verse 18 says don't be drunk with wine because that will ruin your life instead be filled with the Holy Spirit the phrase be filled in this verse in the Greek is speaking of a continual filling of the Holy Spirit like wind in a sail or like if I charge my phone to one hundred percent its charged but if I leave it plugged in it's being charged that's what this is talking about he's talking about being filled it's a continual feeling it's a continual reality that that baptism with the Holy Spirit is a well a very deep well from which you can draw and a river it flows continually so the Bible is telling us to be filled continually with the Holy Spirit how do we do that it's very simple we surrender to him our lives you surrender those things you don't want to surrender you surrender your attitudes your mentalities things you may have picked up since you were a kid you surrender your heart you surrender your sin you surrender what you perceive to be God's will when maybe it's not God's will you surrender the people that God does not want in your life you surrender your time you surrender your resources you surrender your skills and abilities and every time you're faced with a decision to do something God's way or your way you choose to do it God's Way you're making room for the Holy Spirit to fill you that baptism that overflow is from within to without that is the baptism with the holy spirit so then we solved that contradiction at salvation he's received at baptism he's released remember baptism is not rain from heaven it's a river from within surrender is the key you must live from the inside out you must live tapping into that power and it must be a continual surrendering to the Holy Spirit the baptism with the Holy Spirit is a reality in which you and I are to live moment by moment day by day year by year for the rest of our lives and this baptism this flood water the this river this mighty flow of God's power begins to flow out from within me and it begins to express itself so that River first is in me and then once that baptism begins to be released in my soul guess what it changes my emotions it transforms my thought patterns it begins to wash away that filth in my mind the river flows into my soul affecting my mind my will my emotions even my personality I begin to take on the fruits of the spirit and then that water overflows now we're talking about the manifestation of power it can flow out of your hands is healing it can flow out of your mouth as speaking in tongues it can it can flow all throughout you as the presence of God and people will be able to sometimes fill it on you I call it the mist from the river within people become dampened by the presence of God as they near you and that's because your presence in his presence become indistinguishable they become one you become the body of the Holy Spirit through the baptism of the Holy Spirit I become immersed filled with overcome by and totally overtaken by the river of the spear that is the baptism of the Holy Spirit it's when the Holy Spirit has full control over you from within to without and you receive that through surrender and again in the next session in this series I'm gonna talk about speaking in tongues which is an expression of the baptism with the Holy Spirit but is it the baptism with the Holy Spirit itself remember it starts from within and then comes - without and that is it for this message I want to pray now I want to pray that the Holy Spirit would flood your being but you would experience the life-changing power of the Holy Spirit that he would help you to surrender and that as you surrender you would experience that floodwater overwhelming you Father in the name of Jesus I tap in to their spirit now and I pray Lord open the floodgate cause the mighty river of God's power the mighty presence of the Holy Ghost to begin to flow over them Lord open that floodgate let the floodwaters come forth let out of their innermost being flow rivers of living water and I pray in the name of Jesus that that river would begin to wash away depression wash away anxiety wash away anger wash away worldly attitudes wash away sin Lord begin to transform them from the inside out let it flow father in the name of Jesus I thank you for your power now moving and I
