How Mario Maker's strangest speedrun broke me

today we're speed running through super mario maker 2 and we're gonna do something kind of weird because our speedrun is going to be getting 50 lives on endless easy mode of course with fanless easy you start off with five lives and you can get up to three different lives in every single level so i mean it's pretty simple right we go in each and every level and we try to get as many 1-ups as possible but surprisingly the strategies for this speedrun are actually pretty interesting like first of all we can check the world record on each level and see if it's too long and then okay this one was actually an amazing one yeah and then we just hope that something like this happens see whenever you get a star and then you also get enemy spam you just kind of get a lot of profit as you can see with what happened with that level so that was actually an amazing start and we can continue the speed run so yeah in general what we want are levels that are pretty much just hot garbage like this one search for the seven gems that probably will have us actually doing things and yeah it's 20 seconds probably not going to be worth it i don't imagine we're gonna get many one-ups so we'll move on to the next one which is to the sky and our goal is to decide which of these levels are going to be worth it as soon as possible because skipping the level is always going to be faster than not skipping it especially if it's not going to give us many lie what is going on i think i'm going to wait here because something interesting is about to happen i know it okay yeah i get a star it was 100 worth that level was awesome i did not know that could happen um yeah so basically what i was saying is you have to have some good intuition for this speed run i've been doing this for hours trying to get the best speed run possible and it really helps you learn which levels are going to be worth it and which levels you have to skip like this one right away it doesn't look like there's too much enemy spam there are icicles things like that it's probably not going to be the type of hot garbage that we need for this one we have a jungle platform it's a minute and 37 seconds yeah we're definitely not doing that one and this one has a title of just one so it probably will be a good one usually when these levels have dumb timers some good things can happen it looks like this is an auto level so maybe not i mean i'm gonna give it a little bit of a chance just to try it out and okay maybe i should enough i mean we got one one up which is okay but in general we want to get at least two and for the most part we want to get three because you know it'll just be faster obviously but getting a few levels that are just going to give us one is okay we just want to prevent it as much as possible so now for this one it's among us it's it's it's it's a mon it's it's among us you know even a mario maker it's just it's just a great time okay this one's gonna start out with killing some goombas it's going to give us are you kidding me okay i'm just gonna skip it yeah um so sometimes you can die in this game i know it's crazy but let's see if this one says weird camera glitch it's only a second long so i'm assuming it's going to be worth it what what was that what was the camera glitch is anything going to happen right here oh we're getting some weird levels this time i mean it is a time loss because again it was only one life but that was actually pretty cool i'm glad i saw it there's some crazy things you can do in mario maker but let's see for this one 46 seconds right away no enemy spam 46 seconds that one needs to be skipped then we have this next one it get no i did not want to do that anyway it gives us a bunch of fire flowers so this could be okay we have one of these guys um i'm thinking this is probably a skip i mean i'm already here so i might as well get another one life i really don't want to keep getting these one life's but i mean it's better than nothing because at the end of the day a lot of the times when you're trying to do this speedrun you're pretty much just gonna have to skip over and over and over again and that gets kind of boring because admittedly this speedrun just comes down to luck you gotta hope you get the trashiest levels possible and sometimes that'll happen but sometimes it won't let's see for this one there's a lot of these guys they think i'm one of them oh what i can do here though is i can use that and then hopefully kill those give me an extra life okay this might do it we can hit these guys as well hopefully this is going to give me at least one one up i mean it wasn't two but i am gonna take one oh but then we can't get to the top of the flagpole you can probably see why this category has been driving me insane for the last couple of hours but that's okay because i believe that we're gonna be able to get some good stuff we have whatever this is that was not included in the good stuff i meant all the stuff after that level like this one grand castle you know would be great in a grand castle having way too many enemies that die because you have a superstar and we're not even in a castle level and it's also a minute and 50 seconds okay after that level is what i meant that's when we're getting the good ones seven seconds and nothing is happening okay after this level that's when i meant something good is going to happen please don't make me keep saying this i don't know how long i can keep it convincing there we go this one looks good okay and i was right it does look good give me those one ups no okay i can get some later they do come in later so this is going to be okay they're all just sitting there for me they're waiting they know that i need them for this challenge thank you 1ups i appreciate you you're very nice people even more one-ups this is the type of levels i need hopefully it also finishes it out thank you you know i'm kind of bringing back my sanity it's okay things are gonna go all right that's really what i have to tell myself to help me sleep at night where the lava rains okay this is gonna be interesting i don't think i want lava to rain but it is a six second level is there going to be anything good probably not especially on castle levels if you hit the axe instead of the flagpole it's not going to give you the one-ups for all the enemies on screen so castle levels are kind of awful you wanna oh okay this is not awful though thank you um i appreciate that i'm just gonna go on a murder spree you know just some normal stuff we'll see a couple bowsers more bullet bills thank you little timmy see that's what we call a little timmy level it's a level where little timmy just got this game for his birthday and he decides i'm gonna make one where it's literally just enemy spam it's my favorite type of level now the question is could we get two little timmy levels in a row i don't think so because this actually has a pretty good title and it's going to be a koopa car level that one's not going to be worth it but defeat all 100 goombas this could be a really good one because usually when you have to defeat so many enemies it's going to give you a star to help you do that it's a one minute time so i think this should be okay at least i'm hoping what is going on um goombas are you guys okay i don't know how i feel about this level i don't know if i should be staying here right now but now i'm intrigued yeah they're just kind of uh going on the conveyor belt is it ever going to is something going to happen okay we're going to get that to go right there i this is taking way too much time i still don't know if i should be continuing this but there might be something cool that happens now they're going through a pipe and they're all just gonna sit there waiting for me to jump on okay yep this was a great level exactly the type of ingenuity that we need to see now all we have to do is that okay and that and that and that and how are there still more um i really don't want to die here thank you very much goombas okay there we go that was uh that was a level i mean worth it it gave us our stuff it only took a minute which even though a minute is a lot of time we could have spent that minutes just skipping different levels so being able to confirm that we're going to get those three lives is always gonna be better now this one is hitting 56p switches why is it giving me these types of levels now mario what is going on i mean i could just yeah i'm not gonna be doing this okay i see a star over there that means that this might be a good level to do if there's ever a star that shows up you can be pretty confident that you should do the level and i was correct how was i able to guess who knows i'm just a genius with this game what can i say now i just have to get out of this car we also need to get one more kill okay maybe not just let me move dude you're kidding me no no no no no no no no no no no no oh i love koopas and cars i mean it's worth it to continue this level even though that was the worst thing that could have happened gotta love the koopas that just needed to have all those cars and now i have to make sure i'm able to move these guys out of the way thank you very much was it really that hard probably not it shouldn't have been but it is what happened and also now we're getting more stars i didn't even have to worry about getting all those one ups before yeah we just kind of get to ground pound great time maybe i should have checked how long this level is because it seems like it's taking a bit of time i'm hoping that i can finish it out here though please do not end up killing me or something i i get that you like long runs but just can end all right goodbye bowser thank you for all your lives i really do appreciate it and i also appreciate you letting me kill you he's a really nice guy he always does that type of stuff for me quickly get the goomba reach the goal after defeating at least one goomba i mean could be something good but probably not super mario bros but 3d one one no i don't want that one one levels are literally the worst things that can happen in this challenge because one one doesn't have any extra lives it's just a boring level nothing much is even happening with it instead i'd rather have whatever this level is supposed to be it seems great and also if it is actually good then we should be able to no unfortunately it wasn't i was hoping that those guys would be in the camera by the time i hit the flagpole so i was able to get the extra lives of course that couldn't happen because what can i say level creators just hate me now what is this one it has a bunch of yoshi's that is okay there are also fireballs and the thing about fireballs is they are something that can be spawned for us so maybe and then it has a bowser at the end goodbye yoshi alright another just won because we didn't get the fireballs at the end but one is better than none you know i've already said this i should stop repeating myself i'm just hoping doing all these levels instead of skipping them and just hoping for the little timmy levels isn't going to come back to haunt me because again i've played this game for way too long i don't want to do it anymore reach the goal after grabbing all 50 coins this could be a good one if it ends being short then we will get the lives from getting all those 50 coins and it's only 20 seconds so oh gosh please don't kill me so i'm just gonna go on here and hopefully this won't take too long gotta love this high action gameplay and then we can go over here get the first 50 coin this next one is going to give us a life so that would be nice and then we have a blind jump and that was terrifying and then we ended off right there get two lives and we also have 62 coins which might come in useful later cap party reach the goal after defeating o11 skip squeaks could be a really good one if we can kill these guys in a row which we probably can't i mean maybe it would have been possible but it's definitely not worth it sonic ex horror movie hooray yep that looks like a horror movie that i'm also just not going to do maybe i would have done it if you give me one ups at the beginning is it that hard game why was that the beginning six seconds okay and okay also something good if i can hopefully it was not enough at least we get some coins at the end so i was right that was going to help us out and i can get two lives and then finish it out with the last live right there see collecting the coins is actually helpful every once in a while i'm surprised that that actually was helpful though and all when i thought everything was lost it actually really worked out for me reach the goal while you have superstar invincibility i'm pretty sure we haven't seen this at all on any of the levels but that is actually amazing because i can go right here uh yeah anyway as i was saying that's amazing because i can kill all these guys and it's not gonna work is it because i'm going to jump into all the different cars and it just won't and now i can't even get up and i lose a life and everything is going wrong it wouldn't let me skip the level there because i was in the car and for some reason when you're in the car you can't skip levels gotta love mario maker okay well um thank you i was just sitting here going through skipping level after level right there it was not a very satisfying time it was probably for like a minute and 30 seconds but then everything that i ever wanted all of my dreams came true because we got big piranhas now let's see go home all right mario how about we go home and also go home with a bunch of lives you know they're gonna be booze that are trying to stop us some guy in a car this guy is well oh oh wait wait nope are you kidding me no i can't go home anymore that could have been good if we got to the flagpole and then we killed all those things but the guy in the car had to ruin everything for me okay let's see with this level it looks like it's just movement which means it's not going to be anything special it wasn't anything special why do i even try for those levels the thing is this game loves giving you an okay start and then once you're trying to actually finish the challenge it goes oh yeah we don't have any more trash levels for you oh but there we go thank you that was the trash level i needed i mean it wasn't even that bad it was just one ups and i was about to reset that one or to skip it or whatever the words are i don't even know words anymore once you play mario maker as much as i have where you're just going through easy level after easy level you don't really have the ability to speak anymore sometimes but don't die i've seen so many levels throughout my times of playing this game which say don't die or do die they just really like using the word die in them but for this one it looks like okay um i didn't die and then no no no no no that's a waste of time i should have known it would have just hit the axe for me and i should have skipped it but i was optimistic i was like maybe there are going to be one-ups at the end i really need to learn for the speed run get rid of all of your optimism things are never going to go the way that you want them to and that looks like it'll probably include this level at seven seconds it doesn't look like it's got too much going for it now music levels are an interesting thing because in a lot of them they will give you one ups at the end but it's also 45 seconds so not worth it but then we have the tree all right maybe the tree is going to have everything i need trees have green on them and you know what else is green yeah one up so give me a one up i don't think this is going to give me what i need i i i think this tree is a lie but i'm in too deep now i'm just gonna keep going you know maybe there's so oh there's a one up all right cool now i just have to not die um this is actually terrifying there's just a wiggler coming after me and now let's get this other one up and there we go okay that was all right now looking at this if we could get four levels in a row they give us three one ups we will be done with the speed run realistically sub 30 is possible but you know then everything also has to go well and when does that ever happen in mario maker but with this one we start out with some dry bones see that the level is about nine seconds get some random yoshi eggs and no no i'm not i'm not gonna do that one and then we have this which usually when it's something like this where it's just saying nothing we're hopefully okay exactly what i need but the goal was don't why did i not read that's fine at least it's a fast level we can continue on with our lives this time i'm just gonna wait for these and read it's not that hard then we have bowser bowser jr that's probably not gonna be anything because i don't wanna fight two bosses there's no point in doing that bowser jr you can live for a little bit longer i don't care and happy birthday dad all right happy birthday dad why don't you give him some 1ups i'm sure he would very much appreciate that is it just going to say happy birthday dad i think it's just going to say happy birthday dad isn't it is there going to be anything else maybe something in this tree no okay at least we got a one up i'm sure your dad loved it i on the other hand did not but you know your dad probably did and then for this next one we have some running and a bunch of munchers this could actually be really good the munchers are going to die that gives us three one ups sub 30 is still possible it is very unlikely but if we get really lucky for these next two levels we could get this sub 30. i just have to think right away i have to be able to do everything with lightning speed if i need to skip a level it has to be right away happy birthday music speed run this could be a good one come on game um 16 seconds i don't know there's going to be a bunch of enemies so maybe they're going to be able to die it doesn't look like it's going to be enough though okay and then we also go into a portal this could be real bad um i don't know who knows anymore why am i all the way up here just finish out this level wait did i just con what is oh no i'm just gonna skip it i'm just gonna skip it oh that is really bad for my time right now i should have skipped it right away i just didn't know what to do ultimo this is the ultimate something and it's the ultimate boss battle which is also trash but it has a bunch of fire flowers which means it might not be terrible because if i kill all these things and they're still on the screen you already know the drill that can be really good but it didn't give me a no i just keep hoping for a miracle and then the miracle never comes i just keep getting levels like this what is that level i go through doors why does it want me to go through doors so much i mean maybe here's something we can pop that up it gives us a bunch of explosions that was pretty cool maybe it'll do the explosion thing where it also gives you a bunch of lives along with the explosions those aren't lives i i was i was asking for live's game come on game please just put some lives down here i'm trusting you level i haven't seen any yet and this is taking way too long but i'm just hoping come on please don't do this to me oh let's go we can go through those thank you very much that is exactly what i needed now all we have to do is finish out i hope i'm not going to die here that would be kind of unlucky making it to the end and that is going to be the end of the level potentially only one more and we can finally finish this speed run oh and we also go into some nice platform where now we're trapped forever hooray is this level going to be our last it is very likely that it could be but it's just looking in a zoo okay thank you for the zoo animals i really appreciate that but then we have this level and we have to grab at least six coins i don't think this is gonna be our last either yeah um thank you for the level i don't like it though but we have this one 12 a.s we have to grab 20 coins can you give me higher coin requirements i mean there are coins right here that could be it but we have to grab all 20 coins and we already missed one of the coins it does not make sense to do just give me a level do you ever think about why we decide to do things like this why this speedrun became the one that i did for mario maker it's just disappointment super mario 3d world 1-1 super bowl yes a 1-1 remake that's exactly what i want to see i don't want to see a good level at this point i should have just completed three regular levels and hit the flagpole at the top and we would have been fine only p-switch it's a bunch of p-switches goombas yes yes okay thank you exactly what i need give me those one-ups and just let me make it to the end let it be done thank you and that is time 33 42 it is done and if we look on speedrun.com we'll see that that puts us all the way down at 27th place yeah not the prettiest thing in
