[Music] it's unfortunately no one no one was hurt which is good uh he said that they basically had to live in a hotel room for about a month I think I don't know if that went on longer and now they're at a point where they're just replacing their lives and trying to get back to where they were before the fire I'm gonna see if anything's salvageable just because I think it'd be fun but we may end up just giving him an entirely new computer oh my God foreign the back of the video card if we get a close-up of it you'll see some thermal paste residue and he's got some vrm heatsink type stuff mounted on the vrm side of the card also to the back of it very creative solution um I'm a little bit surprised that it was not the source of the Fire based on what I've seen so far it's fine about heat sinks to it I just wonder what other modding went on here it's sad this was like this is some really good computer he spent a lot of time modding it these are cool mods like I like this idea just pull a bunch of heat out of the back of the video card this looks like it might be a 30 80 or 90 like a dollar HP model when I'm not we'll find out soon yeah he's got more there those stayed on though so this came off in shipping I'm sure and I'll probably bring in um Patrick or Mike show them and see what they think uh it's sad yes it's very sad this was uh in the the viewers room that basically the whole room caught on fire so oh no it was hurt but the computer is totaled I would say so I bet I wonder if the corrosion like I wonder if it also got wet after the fire like firefighters came through and just sprayed everything that's a good point that's probably where all this rust came from it's like the heat probably stripped a lot of the the finishing off of all the metal bits and then there was so much aerosolized like water from the fire fighting that um it makes sense all right yeah so was this phone there I don't know um I feel like it looks like he had a phone there really good charger plugged in there yeah well as as we saw with the hurricane damaged one you know stuff can get wet and if you don't turn it on and there's not a battery in it all right somebody I mean so maybe the motherboard might be toasted but yeah the rest of this could be good for those I don't know the motherboards have a CMOS battery in them so no they turned one of his 3.0 ports back into the 2.0 before that this video is brought to you by thermal Grizzly thermal Grizzlies hydronaut and cryonaut thermal paste are high performing thermal interfaces for use on CPUs and gpus you can bring an old card back to Peak Performance by replacing it and doing preventative maintenance and thermal Grizzlies hydronaut is ideal for water Cooling and Air coolant for new and old cards alike cryonaut paste is one of the top performing pace for extreme overclocking with CPUs and gpus and has been used in several world record scoring machines learn more at the link in the description below today we're going to be fixing this computer for a viewer this was sent in To Us by Luke who is from our audience and unfortunately this computer was in a house fire not caused by the computer this was caused by a window AC unit kind of terrifying to think about we're gonna open up his computer he sent it to us he said quote my monitors are hella and then he said but the computer might be salvageable we're gonna see if we can help on the computer oh my gosh he sent us a lot of toothbrushes this guy's got a sense of humor I we didn't tell him we were going to give him a new computer he probably probably surmised that but um but he deserves one for going the extra mile here A bunch of t-shirts there's basketball I don't know I'm not really sure what's going on here I'm not gonna ask too many questions uh Mike will deal with this later for intake Let's uh let's look at the computer though we're gonna do our best to just to refurbish and reclaim as many parts as we can we talked about this and Patrick Mike and I were all talking about you know this is at a state where we should build him a new computer but it's a lot more fun if we can bring this thing back to life in some fashion with some of the parts so I'm going to pass this off to Mike to get started on Mike uh enough fun and games that didn't sound good all right so I think our first school here is going to be disassembly and kind of assessing uh how much cleaning this is gonna need or what what parts we can salvage from it I think I'm gonna put this mask on there's a lot of particulate debris should I put on a mask no I'm not worried about your health I'm just kidding folks I care about Andrew B vrm fan is now oval shaped which is a feature and I don't think she'll ever spin freely again see if we can even Dismount this now we get to find out if he applied too much thermal paste or not oh my gosh it looks great holy smokes cool 1500x one of our favorites that it doesn't look too bad yeah so we'll make a we'll make a pile of might be okay Parts we'll clean them up and then we'll hopefully when Patrick gets in he can find a clever way of testing each component safely yeah I think I think it got hot enough that whatever paint or finish was on top of this heat sink you know bubbled up and started to either corrode or it could have been off from the the water as well stupid this and if I remember correctly this is a 30 90 so that'd be awesome if the card was still good oh snap one of his hard drives is still in here oh boy oh looks pretty all right look how clean it is in there all right I wonder if this oh wow I'm regretting shaking that that actually looks okay [Music] well I don't think we'll ever get that pearly white back foreign [Applause] let's see what this CPU looks like oh it's good felt good felt normal oh man it looks great okay let's take a look at what we got I'll take the case down we'll address that later but let's take a look at our parts all right so we've torn the computer apart I'm actually kind of surprised at the overall condition of some of these parts the stuff in here doesn't look too bad it looks like it might have just gotten like a nice misting and then there was enough water on those non-corrosion resistant surfaces to corrode them I think we might try to take this apart to clean out the inside the card itself looks good the motherboard is probably not worth trying to salvage the memory looks okay um the CPU absolutely looks fine I I would I'm going to venture guess that this is functional and we can reuse it which is great so I'm going to go about cleaning this stuff up and then we're gonna see uh see what works still [Music] so just to be clear we had discussed this earlier neither of us expect this motherboard to work right I think it would be interesting to strip it down kind of see what the damage is and then see what lights up if we plug it in that's not really going to do any harm except to itself and it's already trashed all right I'm gonna relocate this and stop messing with it and we will start to tear down the GPU which we both are optimistic yeah it will work I don't think you need to worry about preserving those heat sinks either way yeah it's still good practice just minimize I destroyed the thermal pads I think that's okay or maybe the fire did we'll just say we would want to replace this it wasn't me nice oh yeah something is still uh oh there's still something plugged in yeah that'll be the LED for the GeForce logo it's very important it's where I found out it's a fake card chat so I think we're gonna hand off to you um and you can continue on to testing and then reassembling and figuring out how many of these items we're going to save so I'll I'll take responsibility for this I guess or you wanted a tanker yeah yeah I'm Gonna Leave You I'm Gonna Leave You to Tinker okay all right so that was that's by Design I mean that's the kind of adhesive they use we can put this in the ultrasonic cleaner and I think we will but if we're gonna get the Ultrasonic Cleaner all dirty we might as well put the parts that should actually work in there first and make those a priority because this is just for my own entertainment I suspect we're going to dump this in the ultrasonic and it's going to look very impressive for like five seconds because all the so it's going to float off and then how much else is going to happen so [Music] apologies for the fan noise so I set this to 40 Celsius I did actually measure out it's got you know a three to four percent um concentration of this uh very dangerous Electronics cleaner that says that it will burn the if I allow it to touch my skin at all so I'm going to try not to do that when I put this card in and I'll go wash my hands afterwards and let's just dunk this on the deep end here and Andrew this is this is legitimately going to be an unpleasant noise uh after I start I like to do the one where it turns off half the time because that makes me feel a little bit better about it we could put the ssds in there [Music] foreign I'll tidy this up a little bit [Music] um I can tear down the power supply and Andrew can clean the case I I don't think this is this stuff is kind of stuck on there uh if you were really invested in this I think you could probably disassemble this a lot more and clean the components you know individually and then maybe it would work but at the end of the day we have other power supplies and I don't think it is worth our time or safety to you know plug this in and see what happens um especially when we're sending it off to somebody else so I'm going to call this a lost cause and then if Mike disagrees with me he can clean it himself uh meanwhile Andrew has been working on cleaning the case so uh we can take a look at what that looks like see if that's salvageable well Andrew took this out back with a hose and some dish soap and a scrubbing brush and it looks pretty promising to start with definitely some of it came off and uh I think you'd said you know you scrape at it with a thumbnail and this definitely is removable but it seems like it's going to take something a little stronger than soap and water if we want to get it all stripped off without you know manually scraping at it all day I think I think we've earned the right to give up on this though uh but we'll try a little harder on it and see if we can get some point to show through I don't hear the Ultrasonic Cleaner anymore do you think it's done let's take a look at it yeah I mean I got the soot out so yeah we'll go ahead and get these dried off and then maybe we'll stick the motherboard in there and see what happens with that uh we're gonna have to rinse these off with some distilled water first stuff all right now we can do this with the ssds and then I have a genius idea uh we've got a dehumidifier and it blows warm air warm dehumidified air out the top so we could just put this on a tray on top of it seems all right the downside is that this is also the most humid room in the building but [Music] oh it's dunk the motherboard [Music] so the GPU is cleaned and drying as are the two m.2 drives um so tomorrow I think we will check up on the motherboard see whether that is in any way salvageable we will try once again to clean the case uh we'll wipe down this rim and then I think we'll be in a good place to start putting the system back together because everything that I haven't just mentioned like the CLC and the power supply I don't think that's really salvageable um hard drive should be fine but yeah we'll check back in tomorrow and see what Mike thinks about that we are putting this graphics card back together I'm getting ready to do the thermal paste and then we'll go ahead and secure this down now so I'm going to do an X but then that looks pretty good oh that feels good oh I felt the squish it's good that felt that felt pretty good that's good it's great I think I think everything's going well just talking to Patrick I am interested to see if this card even runs we could toss it on the GPU bench no might Blossom up probably a bad idea I am hopeful about the GPU the actual PCB was already pretty clean and then we cleaned it up some more you know there's a there's a ton of tiny little solder joints on there and if anything got damaged by heat or by liquid uh Cardinal work so I've collected some components here that um you know aren't the most Mission critical and we can use those to connect the potentially damaged components without risking that much and just make sure that they work before we start putting the system back together so to start with we're going to do the CPU we're going to do the components one at a time that makes it easier to isolate problems so yeah let's just turn it on and see what happens so we we had a cycle there it went back through and here we go okay so I've also got a boot Drive hooked up just so that we can go into windows and make sure that there aren't any massive temperature issues this is an old windows 10 install it was just lying around all right so there's our 5800x so this CPU boots um it goes into Windows you know we can run Center bench there wasn't any visible damage to the CPU there's no reason to expect that the CPU would be damaged by what happened so I think we're good here next up we will do the ram I'm going to put all four sticks in all right coming in the windows now Okay so that is good enough to get put in build for now um so last up we have the GPU let's give it a shot this is the the real test fans are good maybe a little bit noisy but they don't sound unhealthy host LEDs are proceeding normally wow okay that was fast ER than the ram swap nice [Music] yeah I'm actually uh that should just be drivers okay cool excellent the motherboard we're not planning on using even if it does work because who knows what issues are going to crop up down the road but we've got the bare minimum to test if it actually works all right no LEDs but this is a b550 board that wouldn't necessarily be any LEDs that come on this with a power supply all right [Music] uh CPU LED lit cards ramping up and down oh moved on from CPU to VGA nice all the parts that we wanted to save look salvageable I think we're going to move on to cleaning up the back plate for the GPU now just to get that a little bit more presentable and then we should be able to put the system back together first off the original case this is not it this is one that we had in inventory we're not going to use the case that was in the fire it got toasted it's brown it's it's not just coated in soot it's actually stained so we thought it would be kind of cool to just have the modern NZXT equivalent of the h440 which would really be the H7 but we like the H7 flow better so we talked to NZXT and they agreed to help out they sent over this case and they're sending a power supply as well it hasn't gotten here yet and these fans so also we have made the decision that we're going to try to use the original motherboard um we or at least I had been pretty pessimistic about this board working at all but it seems like it does it's a little bit Rusty in some spots and uh you know it's got battle damage which arguably looks kind of cool but we're going to try it's it's a good motherboard so we're actually going to see if it works and if it does then you know I don't think we're gonna be able to offer a huge upgrade over this um I talked to Steve though and if we ship this back and then it turns out that the board was damaged somehow in a way that we couldn't um detect and you know the board dies then we'll figure out sending a replacement but I think it would be pretty cool to actually use the original board um because at that point we're pretty much just replacing the case and the rest of the components the ones that came through the fire so yeah I'm going to work on assembling all of this [Music] thank you put it all on there [Music] thing in Beauty [Music] so that's it for the build this is the h-440 which I don't know if we mentioned it explicitly earlier but this is a very old but uh important case in the industry unfortunately we couldn't get it to clean in a presentable way Andrew tried for probably about a day and this is the best we got it so we contacted NZXT we got a new case for Luke's build we used that one ncxt provided the case send it out to Luke he messaged us back and he said I'm actually shaking this means so much and he said it's crazy to see the rust on the screws and the connectors but it works so that's good to hear he's also out of the hotel and into a more permanent residence now so things are looking up over there so um he doesn't want the old case I don't know what we're gonna do with it we'll hang on to it for now uh ultimately though we actually shot this video months ago and there was just so much footage to parse we only just got through it all so a very fun project I'm shocked at how well all those parts came back to life and we're able to get it all working just like it was and that's gonna be it for this one thanks for watching
