I recently told you I was going to build a computer that's 10 years old well it's just under 10 years old to see how it handles today's modern stuff well here it is actually this part's the only old part that's all that matters waiter up this video to bring you a special message from iFixit no we interrupt this Interruption with this Interruption that new stuff from my fitted push it in grab this cardboard inventory sucks fix the inventory problems with iFixit Whoa Don't drop it can't fix that with die fiction just kidding yes you can wish you could take iFixit with you anywhere but your pockets aren't big enough introducing a new Moray and a new minnow take them with you anywhere so good I fix it for your loved one or just get them for yourself [Applause] so the platform that we're talking about right here is Haswell uh Haswell actually launched June 2nd 2013. so that's why it's just under a 10 years old it's actually nine years and 11 months old like to the day as of shooting this video anyway so this 4770k was actually mine I used this in one of the iterations of Skunk Works which is why it's got the black and the yellow um it comes in a time when things were so much more simple that was the topic actually I take that back there was the 4790k which came after this one but this was for all intents and purposes it was the i7 that they I basically went to you know the IHS instead of having slaughtered Tim was thermal paste and it ran really hot at 84 Watts so things have changed a little bit also too uh it is a 84 watt processor as I said 22 nanometer process and it's got 1 400 million transistors which I think is really funny that it was listed that way maybe the number just looks bigger to them but it's 1.4 billion transistors if we compare that to something like you can get today even like Phil's 13 700k he can put the side-by-side comparison right here it's kind of insane how far we've actually come considering the fact that this was a top top tiered CPU at 350 I remember when people complained about the price of this CPU moving on this is our platform right here you might notice there's no RAM on the table that's because apparently I sold it all dtr3 which I guess at the yard sale I got rid of all of it and I thought I kept the stick behind or a kit behind so funny story Amazon actually has DDR3 sets in stock 16 gigabyte kits at 1600 megahertz I was hoping it was gonna be 18 uh 66 but it's not 1600 whatever that's fine for 16.99 so actually just over a dollar a gigabyte which I find hilarious considering the fact there was a while there DDR3 became very expensive because as you know Ram becomes obsolete it becomes scarce which means price goes up so that'll be here later today which means I can at least get the system built and then plop that in later but I basically went with some team group uh I'll put it right here up on the on the screen 17 moving on for storage I'm using a brand new drive it's a two gigabyte P5 plus it's really honestly just one I grabbed it's a bit Overkill of a drive that you would use in a system like this you would probably use a much more basic nvme and the reason why I'm using an nvme because it was the very first motherboard I ever owned that had a slot for it it's right there and you only get one of them so you would have to use your nvme as your main drive and then you would use say to six as your auxiliary drives or your secondary drives and there are two four six eight of those slots for the graphics I'm using a RTX 2080 TI Founders Edition card I feel like it was a it's a good card to sort of see one how bad is it being bottlenecked and two um let's say you had an old platform like this and you were continuously updating your graphics card as time went on so I'm intentionally creating a bottleneck here and what we'll do in this video because it's going to be this first part of the video right now where we're building it and getting it ready I'm going to show you guys how to get you know windows installed on it how to update this very old bios that I'm sure is going to need an update probably just for the V bios alone for the graphics card to basically give us an image hopefully uh nvme Drive setup which was not easy back then it was not just plug and play like it is today so we get the system up and running then when we do our gaming test uh we're gonna probably start we might even go down as low as like a 10 series card which is not that much newer than this platform those came out in 2016. uh three years later so still still very much within the realm of when people would be running a a 4th Gen Intel with a 10 series graphics card then we'll pop the 2080 TI in and then maybe we'll pop in like a 40 90 or something just to see what happens it's probably not good things in terms of it'd be a stuttery mess of bottlenecking but the reason why I chose this drive to be honest is uh I feel like if you're building a system and you're using older parts you shouldn't skimp out on your drive and I'm not saying go with a P5 plus that's a bit Overkill but even like something like a P2 from crucial or maybe like a 870 Evo or something like that from Samsung something that's not going to break the bank maybe a one terabyte uh somewhere around the 60 range for a one terabyte just because you want a Quality Drive that you can count on when it comes to not corrupting your data or bricking the controller or just being unreliable with your data it's your data so nothing sucks more than having to change out your drive and reinstall everything again but I just grabbed this drive out of the box honestly um the cooler this is just the fan Tex AIO that's the glacier one I'm using it one because it's a 240 AIO it'll fit in this chassis which I have right here which is just one of the um lien lead land cool cases I can't remember exactly which one it is it's just a mid Tower nothing special I just needed a box to put all the parts in so the case here it really has no bearing on any of this but the fact that it is using the Intel bracket and the nice thing about Intel is all of the mounting mechanisms for the aios always support everything back to as far as LGA 775 and up I've already tested it this one does work with the spacing on that particular socket which is 1150 by the way if you're wondering so this will just be up and running no RGB none of that just one plug for the uh splitter for the fans and one plug for the AIO pump and done nothing to set up there in terms of the power supply once again just a 650 watt nothing crazy remember the RTX 2080 TI is a 250 watt TDP graphics card so we got a 250 watt graphics card with a 84 watt CPU I could pretty much be using a potato power supply built today and it'd be just fine the irony is I don't have any lower spec power supplies than this one so our stuff has kind of evolved throughout the years that we keep on hand as we need it for modern stuff so it's the lowest wattage one I have and it's still an 80 plus gold when this stuff was new a 650 watt 80 plus gold power supply would have been a few hundred dollars um this power supply is probably north of 100 still but it's got a 10 year warranty I'm not picking it to say buy it it's just literally the lowest wattage one I had that I could grab without jumping down into the sfx form factor so it's going to be an ugly system because we got red accented PSU with yellow accented motherboard with a silver graphics card and this funky colored fan these funky fans which by the way remember these are very fast fans from fantex right here um yeah so this should be pretty easy build to just bang it out real quick so let's get it done top IC [Music] thank you [Music] all right so here it is it's built and assembled it's got my super custom Gaff tape hold down for my m.2 because I lost the screw that goes with it and all the screws we have are too big apparently they're a lot smaller back then multiple plugs with these uh pigtails that way if I test the higher end graphics card you know I'm not just stuck with one pigtail because they could use three plugs so I guess all we have to do now is put this video on pause and come back when uh when I have Ram maybe I shouldn't have sold my DDR3 stand by while I try and build a ddr2 system next okay fine sdram using dvr1 is this talking are you just for the the thingy oh [Music] my DDR3 finally came in it's team group 1600 megahertz CL 11 uh 16 gigabytes two eight gigabyte sticks nothing special no heat spreaders or any of that stuff no RGB because it predates RGB stuff being a thing 16.99 on Amazon I'll put a link down below if anyone's looking for some DDR3 it's probably less than I sold mine that I was looking for and it's also been a couple days since the first part of this video but anyway moving on you might have noticed Heaven running both in the first part of this video and the second part that has been running now for 48 hours and that is the same 37 that came out of Satan's PC or 3070 that came out of Satan's PC so as you can see in certain types of use cases it doesn't crash I don't know why I'm leaving it running for days on end I just started it one day and I'm like I don't know I'll just let it go now we need to see if the 10 year old system will boot I call it 10 year old system even though the only thing 10 years old is the CPU in the motherboard but that is the platform so we're calling it 10 years old all right please no freaking way oh yeah we got bios right there it's a lie I thought I was going to update the BIOS on this it looks like a modern MSI bios yeah well that's because MSI bios haven't really updated in terms of its appearance in so long we have RGB on a system that otherwise never ever would have had it Nick I need our Windows install media so we can get windows installed on here um it's our Windows 11 install media which should work with this Hardware I can't see the reason why it wouldn't but we're gonna find out I don't know why I'm talking like this your PC can't run Windows 11. dang I thought that was gonna be the case Nick we need the Windows 10 install media custom yay so I didn't do anything this video was supposed to be about here's what you have to do to get an old system to run on new stuff apparently it's build it yeah what we have to do right now is we have to install the updates which will take a minute on this system we need to install the graphics driver um and then I'll probably go into uh the MSI website and I'll download any like not bios but like any chipset drivers and stuff for this what I need to do honestly is I need to take this system but I need to Source a 780 Ti because that's that was the top of the line GPU at the time the CPU was new get that in here uh and then I need to take a 13 100k with like not even because it's because we don't have any low end 40 series yet right so a 1650 TI or whatever the lowest end parts you could kind of get today and then put them against each other now if you're watching this going but Jay my internet and stuff right now isn't working I have a land plugged in this is not a Wi-Fi board Wi-Fi boards were rarer back then they're kind of like a standard now but back then it was like a Wi-Fi designation that cost a bit more uh then what you're gonna have to do is use a laptop or another PC or something go to the driver page for MSI and then you'll download that land so it would look something like this so I would go to their website for the empower good job MSI what I was just there anyway you'll go to support then you drivers drivers it's fine go to support and then you'll find your network uh driver there download it onto a USB stick from another computer then plug it in there install it and then all your Wi-Fi or not your Wi-Fi but your wired internet stuff will work be quite as proud to announce their all-new white lightwings high performance argb fans available in 120 and 140 enthusiasts who demand performance and Silent operation to see the full list of specs and availability follow the link in the description below TI installed on a software is installed I've installed cinebench some of the game titles we're going to test right now let's start with the CPU all right so my CPU clock is right here it should Max that at 3.9 gigahertz it won't go past that actually with the OC Genie it might I don't know and then our CPU temperature right now our Max temp we've seen so far is 57 just doing stuff but once I start cinebench and this test is going to take a minute I want to see what the max temps are going to be considering today's coolers are built for such higher end 59 60. but it's it's amazing how far cooler tech has come in 10 years because the 47 70k I remember clear as day was just everyone complaining about how hot it was it was the 9900k in the area yeah absolutely it's 61 degrees it hit 62 for a minute or for a second but 61 and it dropped down to 3.7 all core which it's kind of interesting because I mean this temperature that you would think that that would stay boosted at 3.9 okay so we got a 4435. would you say this steam deck was 44.36 okay one point different from a steam deck so essentially if you sum a 4770k you have a steam deck so that shows you just how far amd's uh uh like efficiency it's 15 watts versus 84. all right I'm gonna restart the system though because I want to see now with the OC Genie going if that's going to help us in any way so with OC genie on now it's four gigahertz all core so we just picked up 300 megahertz we also picked up 12 degrees Celsius that does show how far the CPU coolers have come in 10 years though just because of the fact that this would have been guaranteed up into the high 80s low 90s before and that was biggest complaining 95c might have been the max back then so it's still doing its looping test it's hit 77 but that one was now a 4813 wow so it gained almost 400 points it's actually not terrible let's see what other CPUs also land around a 44 or 48 13 score shall we so other scores that are right around stock the core i5 8300h again laptop CPU a 7330 uh U which is an AMD ryzen 3 laptop CPU the 4770k overclock did beat a 10 or 7 7 600k that was 4209 the ryzen 5 3400g which I have out there is a 4836 so essentially it's a 3400 G 13100f is an 8871. so nearly double okay so no surprise to anyone that the CPU performs is about as bad as you would expect one other thing I want to talk about when I when I mentioned the 4770k being hot an awesome indicator of it being the thermal interface material they added was the spike in temperature the leveling and then when I stopped the test look at that and then look at the temps ever since this is while we were loading right now 3D Mark but that sudden drop in uh Equalization of temp down there tells me has nothing to do with cooler saturation has nothing to do with the therm the liquid getting hot otherwise you would see it slowly tapered down it would not be a cliff like that so this AIO is definitely over respect for that particular CPU this is just that indicator of why people started d-litting around that generation okay so with that said we are going to also run um time spy extreme with the CPU test which we don't normally do I'll just do a regular test because of the fact that Phil does have his steam deck scores 160 174 milliseconds for frame all right so we got a 4932 3d2 we got a 4932 yeah combined score a graphic score of a 68.81 68 36 was our original score so there you go a fully synthetic Benchmark that is designed to run in memory even slow memory um was not really bottlenecking at all uh the CPU on the other hand absolutely the CPU score is it's just a physics score and it's not one that we really use in our normal testing however Phil does have his steam Tech score of a 1501. hey what are you laughing it's only 300 behind that that's why I'm laughing because the fact that this is so close to it yeah and it needs an AIO to do it so it's noticeably taking longer to load the test it's a common misconception that you're supposed to see a hundred percent utilization on your GPU typically you'll see anything between 95 to 100 on a fully GPU bound uh scenario under 95 and there's some reasons below 90 in the 80s and 70s that you're seeing here this is the GPU waiting on the CPU to process the frames that are being rendered so telltale signs right now of CPU bottleneck so as the test finishes here the 2080 TI and the 12900k had an average frame rate of 139 to our 97. so check this out uh GPU bound zero percent GPU bound that is because of the fact that every single frame was waiting on the CPU is what this is saying but the point is if you paired a 2080 TI with this game and this setup you're paying for some performance that is not there or you're not getting if the idea is that you're gonna be running this setup for a while then you would have some future compatibility and expansion available to you through your GPU but it would be a bad um yeah it'd be a bad combo and a waste of money at that point which is why I have the 3050 on here all right uh the other title we're going to do before we jump with the 3050 is cyberpunk and the reason for that is cyberpunk is um a very CPU intensive title well it's trying to you know what I think about we didn't check the minimum what are the minimum CP requirements for cyberpunk let me see I we might be under it a core i5 3570k or an AMD FX 8310 but look once it started loading we were fine it's just that initial like loading screen was bad now you might be asking yourself Jay why are you doing 1080p because you know if you went higher resolution then it would be less CPU you're right we're just trying to see right now kind of what happens in the 1080p scenario because I also think if people are looking at 10 year old platform they may not have a 1440p panel you know 1080p is you can have enough for like 100 bucks or cheaper so the average FPS here was 81.87 so 82 average that's actually better than I was thinking because well that same card did get 108. and yes this is somewhat fairly unscientific in that we're not doing a bunch of controls and running at 50 times et cetera we're just showing you like the raw dirty this system is built this GPS thrown in this is what we're getting I know high high 60s low 50 or high diesel 60s remember this is ultra settings although we would kind of expect in 1080P at least 60 if all we had 40. there's a 4248 it stutters or nailed it nailed it we're good oh I got a warrant reload it's actually not that bad oh yeah I'm being such a jerk right now but that's what you're supposed to do in cyberpunk and but based on the the price that you can get a 3080 TI for now or 20 ATI it might be worth it just to get it get it now and then have it yeah see I I'm having these battles and it's not terrible oh my goodness all right so let's go ahead and throw the 3050 in there though because I'm curious now if we'll get somewhat similar performance with the 3050. all right so as expected not really any sort of a bottleneck a 2840 on the 12 900 versus a 2823 on the 4770k so margin of error there that's what you want to see yeah it was like it was at like 60 55 60 somewhere around the Phil can put up a split screen but it was in the it was low like 50s or 60s somewhere it was low very bottlenecked 83. okay that's a little bit more like it there's a little bit left because like bound 61 so it's trading off obviously that's why it's not matching the 88 but we lost 5 FPS for full performance versus this a lot more reasonable than losing uh 97 versus 139 on the 2080 TI uh let's see 50 versus 58 okay so again very similar in performance loss so the 4770k is bottlenecking a 3050 a little bit it's just a smaller bottleneck if you will it's a little taper that's what it is but let's go ahead and go into the game once again in the same exact spot and we'll see and we'll end this I think by now our point that I was trying to prove is that um actually I wasn't trying to prove a point other than I was curious about this combo I passed by it every single day we have this like display case in our coffee table in our front area that has like old stuff that's cool in it and this has been sitting in there ever since because this was one of my Skunk Works type iterations um actually it wasn't in Skunk Works it wasn't a different system I digress but walk past it every day and the CPU was mounted and I always went I wonder if that would still be useful today and part of me when I started this video was I wonder if it still works so anyway if I wanted to actually increase the performance of the system a little bit I think going with 1866 Ram would help um but the 1600 was all I could find again for 17 who might have complained about that all right let's see what we got here it's definitely more noticeable and this is honestly just the 3050s ability to play cyberpunk yeah util looks good yeah the utils is up it's still a little bit bottlenecked you see it's at 90. but um it's playable it's just we're looking at 40 FPS out of the way all right dlss [Music] hey look at this 58. [Music] okay oh yeah you can see the detail did drop and the FPS is is helping a little bit but it's definitely fluctuating yeah what you would notice though is the price difference between the 20 years yes absolutely because what you save you could buy a better CPU so all right there we go if you guys want me to do what I said though is where I take this system with a period correct graphics card either a 7080 TI or maybe a 980 I do have a 90 to classified on hand so I'd be able to throw that in here that'd be a technically a one generation newer um platform of GPU which is not unreasonable people will keep their CPUs for multiple genes or graphics cards and then build a bottom spect most recent generation uh system just to see how well it performs you guys want to see that sound off down below maybe give this video a like like I said this was a little bit more of a non-scientific more live playthrough to see what it's like and you know what I did a lot better than I expected it to to be honest I expected this to be a chug Fest and just in the teens and when it comes to FPS and that wasn't the case all right guys thanks for watching as always we'll see in the next one
