in this episode of horse shelter heroes our farrier has some wants they're not demands they're just wants you'll definitely have to watch it um he's feeling a little left out sherman the big draft horse he's struggling to get up we're really worried about him a whole lot more happens in this episode of horse shelter heroes don't miss a single minute [Music] i'm don i do the adoption applications and adoption follow-ups my favorite day is intake day i love going to them when the animals the horses come through from auction and seeing how they are when they come through and then how they are when they are adopted out and the life's just back in their face auction two years ago was my very first intake day they had a tennessee walker come through that was a big lick he had scarring on his feet and ended up coming home with me ended up being my first horse his name's spartan he's a 23 year old tennessee walker we have another cat survender so i'm on my way they do the paperwork so what we're gonna do sorry if people ever wonder why we don't answer the phone right away it's because sometimes we just can't right they adorable they're so cute there's nowhere for cats to go around here unfortunately it's the plus part of horse plus the kittens thank you thank you thank you so much you're welcome mama and three babies we're so thankful that they bring them here and they're not on the side of the road and your phone's ringing and my phone won't stop don't stop i am trying to catch up from last week because it was so crazy busy with all the filming and rescuing over 50 horses and all the mentoring that we did that um on friday after at all jason's like boy you're quiet and i'm like i have talked so much in that last week so i'm i'm trying to recoup from all that catch up with all my emails um do all the other stuff i have to do so i'm just in ketchup mode and i'm glad i still have a voice after last week so when can they watch season two wait till january and january 2022 that's not too far away um according to the calendar we will get there quickly and our schedule so you're definitely gonna enjoy it it's gonna be a great great season what's happening well we are editing episodes and episodes and film and film and film last week we were so busy filming air force rescue heroes we didn't have a chance to sit down and do a whole lot of this so i am cramming out a auction intake so kind of the auction rescue and the initial intake at the auction i'm gonna try to get that out today it's and that's and that's where horse shelter here is right but that's not the episode this is just going to be one part of it and i'm already over 22 minutes and it's going to be a huge episode when the whole thing is oh that's awesome okay and caleb what are you working on i am working on our july report so all right i hope we'll get that up today so awesome i see 29 steins gilded that is fantastic all right they won't get raven ultrasound put on a checker again two or three months sometimes it's hard to feel between when the baby starts dropping down and the bladder is coming up i was sort of grabbing a fold of the rectum but she smoothed it out but like she was pregnant because her stomach looks like it's dropping frothing and she's a little bagged up on it i started throwing my ultrasound on saturday but it left [Music] we have one more pregnancy check and we're going to do her in the shoot [Music] do you feel anything i think she's pregnant how far along would you say i think she's a month behind the other one it's about three months yeah about three months i'll go three months on that do you want to ultrasound her too yeah let's just sort of get her some back up on it yeah she feels pregnant okay yeah she's not much over 20 but let's go 20. [Music] i believe she's pregnant too how far along i think about three months so i feel like half these mares that came in last auction are probably pregnant so lucy is also pregnant she's about four months along so that's three for three so far today we have a total of four pregnant mares currently so this is tg we're checking his teeth he was one of the paints that was surrendered so we're gonna go through today and just look at all their teeth because some of them have they have some behavioral issues so we're just going to rule it out well that's not bad but i'll get that out i can do a little bit but he's not bad i think he's just got a behavior issue [Music] he's the sweetest of all kai is getting x-rays on her front left and she'll get her teeth checked too and you know she can have some inflammation in the joint too but if it is in the joint soft tissue because she's been going kind of lame right leg yeah on that leg since she's we've been starting to work her and she started little arthritis in the cuddle part of her metacarpus [Music] today is christine's last day and fandom is taking advantage of that the farrier just got here he's going to do a few trims up in quarantine and he's also dropping off to surrender horses all right doc what are we doing here we're going to lay her down so our horseshoer can trim her feet because she's untrained and we gotta take some x-rays too so she's making it hard on herself but she's on sand she's not hurting anything [Music] this wasn't lamping or anything nope i think we're pretty good we got a little hoof it needs to heal but i think we'd be okay these are the two surrenders that ferry just dropped off so doc's gonna do their vaccines and do a little wellness check on them i like when we get surrenders when doc's here where did they come from they were just surrendered i don't know where they came from i am vaccinating we have a new arrival here so she is getting the welcoming treatment this is welcome to our vaccine fully vaccinated facility i'm surprised at how fat she is she's not doesn't look foundered we're gonna head up to quarantine we have some x-rays and a couple of horses to trim up there we made it up to quarantine we're waiting on doc so we're gonna do a couple trims the big boy sweet boy [Music] we're gonna do x-rays on him i think it's the back left thing silence we got a bony formation at the back of the honk that's the calcaneus bone right there put it at the back and see that's right where the that's where the ligaments the ligaments are turned we're looking at the hawk and i don't see anything extremely evil in there all the lines are good [Music] we may go we either need to go up or down now that's a bullfrog there [Music] so do you think it might just be from being weak that he can't get up he's got some swelling in that knee yeah he does that's why we concentrated on it first [Music] let's go ahead and get the felt lock he goes down and then he can't get up and we always think that maybe it's in this part of the leg that he can't straighten it up the only place we found anything is down here in the in the fetlock area where where he's got a lot of arthritis looks like he's got it on the front and back of the joint and pretty sore but you know we can't x-ray the hip so this joints out we've got a nice x-ray machine but that's just too much power well she's found her to it looks like on the x-ray she just found her to a moderate degree but her hoof is not well gary's got her foot up i was gonna we'll get him to show you the bottom of the foot and see what we got [Music] the bad part about it is she's always going to be tender we took x-rays [Music] since i don't have huge nippers i just have to do it a little at a time that right there just blows my mind out he's just you can't tell upside down but we probably went pretty drastic right there [Applause] so we had three pregnancy checks today all three came up pregnant we did three teeth floats they all feel better now and then we came up here and we were able to do some trims on a couple of them we did one trim actually down there and then we did what four up here and then we did some x-rays so hopefully everyone's feeling better my name is christine and i started working here at horse plus humane society in june of this year some of my favorite things about working here at horse plus have been just getting to know the different horses and learning more about horses in general and working with them has been really fun if you watching this video are thinking about potentially adopting a horse or donating to the rescue i would highly recommend it i get to see the difference that these donations make every day here with the horses and it's really exciting to see so since this has been mainly a summer job for me i'm going to be heading out for a couple months but i will be back professional horse handler here today mr justin he's going to keep them do all the whispering [Music] okay it's okay sometimes they just don't want to put their foot up there [Music] that's okay we'll work through it we'll work through it won't we [Music] ew ew hey you know this ain't that bad okay justin work you horse whisper in here and this segment is called melting at horseplus i'm slowly melting welcome to the summertime in tennessee or just something about dressing the foot just makes it pretty how's you think justin there you go now you're relaxing it's amazing how you can just feel them start to relax once they figure out i can rest [Music] justin you hold that in i'll hold this in we both hold each end maybe we won't gonna work we gotta have some fans i'm melting slowly at my barn yeah i've probably got three fans at the barn oh there's no telling i need more fans the more fans i can get the better take all the fans i can get yeah so so dr scott gets fan mail i think i should get fan mail i sweat a lot more than he does so i think i need some mail just send it to horse plus we'll read it out loud everybody we don't care we love everybody i think it's just not right that they haven't sent me any fan mail no i do this because i love it if it makes somebody help out horses more part to it you know so it's all about so you sure don't do this for fun it's not for my health it's for my fans shoes put on today i gotta clean this mess out that's something i would eat you in there let's beat the tar out of it see if we can get it to look like something please let me drive a nail please don't hurt me okay is done and then we're going to get blackjack out maddie's going to catch him and bring him over here [Music] good job yeah you did good yeah yes you did all right [Music] all right big ben is gonna see the farrier and if you're wondering what all this random noise is in the background they're mowing up here in quarantine so it's going to be a little loud sorry about that what we're looking at is all the hoof walls are they're just down to nothing basically and if we don't have good hoof wall we can't drive nails so see how he's already starting to give the other side's probably hurting him as well so what we'll probably have to do is trim it back and get some growth started before we can do any good see what we've got that's just super tender on it let's dress him up real good and see if he'll let me dress him and a month would be good we can try to get some shoes on him in a month [Applause] and you know he might get better he might have been on something really hard and stone bruised and just tenders all get out and and give him some time off he might he might come around not even need shoes yeah they'll come back i think her feet have come back it's just to take time some time i don't it's just been so abused for so long it's just you're basically starting over regrowing and rebuilding and it's not the end of the world but a little tender for a little while but i think he'll i think he'll come back around honestly my name is shelby and i'm the creative writer and i'm also part of the media team my favorite part about working at horseblood humane society is probably seeing horses go from so depressed and so emaciated and sad just to happy healthy and adoptable and especially seeing those adopters come and find the horses that they've dreamed of and just seeing the happiness on their faces just really makes me happy and sad and reminds me of why we do the work that we do one of the horses that really stood out to me in my mind was a couple auctions ago we rescued a belgian her name was hope and she had a really bad swollen leg and it was it was broken and she was emaciated and depressed and sad you could see all the pain in her eyes and she was just suffering for sure and just seeing horses like that really puts a fire inside of us and makes us want to rescue more horses like her because there are so many horses out there that need our help we can't rescue horses like her without you guys's help so we really need your help and support you look very busy what are you working on filing the adoption applications away so this is all the adoption this is just half of them oh my goodness these two binders are what we've gotten so far this year what's going on in the grant room oh you know just the typical processing all kinds of applications and they're steadily coming in still so i don't think i'm in afraid of keeping my job or anything because i got some good job security okay well your desk looks full and you seem relatively happy okay well thank you for all the information that you've given me today yep thank you goodbye i've been working on this application this morning and there's just been discrepancies and the information that she's provided on the application and what i found out through making my calls to verify information she said she has no horses i've been advised that she has three and one as a stallion so because of the inconsistencies i am going to deny her application so she will not get an adoption appointment to come out and look at our horses our adoption application process is in depth we don't try to make our adoption process scary where it'll scare people away i know a lot of organizations out there if you go to adopt a dog the application process can be so scary that you just don't even attempt to adopt from that organization i've known many many qualified people from presidents of amazing organizations to veterinarians that have been denied from adopting from a rescue because they're just not good enough so we try to have our adoption applications where we get all the vital information and we're not trying to make it a scary process but we have to get enough information that we know the horses that we're placing are going into good homes so we ask for you know different references we do satellite verification with pictures and everything just so we make sure these horses are getting into good homes once they go through the application process then they're approved for an appointment to come to our facility and then that's where the actual adoption interview happens is when they're interacting with that horse because we want to make sure that you know on paper they're looking good and also in person and that it's the right match with the horse so everyone that submits an application doesn't always get an appointment here because if we see a red flag or a concern in their application we try to get where they don't even have to come here and there are sometimes and it's been seen in our episode where you know we did turn somebody away and wouldn't adopt to them just because we were concerned that the horses weren't the right match um doesn't mean that you know we feel that people are bad people it's just we we want to make sure that there's no red flags for the horses we're adopting out so sometimes it just happens and there's nothing we can do and we understand it may make hard feelings out there but it's our job to make sure these horses and stay in good situations [Music] all right it's early in the morning and what's going on i'm getting ready to do some feeding um i go around feed all the horses make sure they have enough water and everything in the morning and make sure that they're healthy [Music] gotta check the seeds let's make sure i get everything in here that i need just about looks good three flex to finish it off all right ready to go [Music] all right first horse is blackjack [Music] and he gets a little bit of grain and a little bit of hay it's excited more for the grain than for the hay [Music] i'll be fine until tomorrow wow wanna say hi [Music] this is super weight gain it's supposed to help the horses gain weight and uh help with their i think it was their coats make it look a whole lot nicer kind of looks like grits in a way almost yeah half pint is ready for some breakfast and then we're off again now we get to go through and water all the horses i try unless it's like um how do i describe that if if it's in the alleyway i normally try to feed and then water afterwards because water takes quite a while to do sometimes um and we have automatic waterers as well too right we have automatic waters and they are working uh we're having problem with one so i gotta make sure that they have water in that pen uh they still haven't come out to fix water yet uh [Music] there's so many projects going on that they're having a hard time getting to it at the moment but it'll be fixed soon so eventually we'll get we've got automatic orders on that side so i've just got to go around and check them every couple days to make sure that they're running and doing what they're supposed to be doing properly this side doesn't have any on mac wires at the moment they'll be being put in some time after the vet barn is done until then i've just got to make sure that this side stays full of water these ones down the alley are all good i've got one more of the check and then we'll head up to quarantine and feed the horses up there that one needs to be filled a little bit okay so it's time to go to feed the quarantine horses so i need to go grab a bag of medicine for the one belgium and then i think we'll be good to go this is madison for the belgium he's got arthritis and his left side i think it is so we're hoping that by giving them a little bit of mute it'll help them recover all right guys the belgian just went down and travis went to go grab the tractor really quick and maddie came up we're gonna put some try to put them over and get him up this is the third time the belgian's gone down we're pretty concerned about it we did his x-rays and he just came up with some arthritis and his fat loss but we're wondering if there might be something so [Music] so we got the belgium back up uh now we're gonna get ready to feed all the horses again [Music] so [Music] i'm making the uh food for the belgium here so he gets beaut along with his alfalfa and senior i'm also going to turn on the water while i'm in there start filling up some water [Music] so all the feeding's done uh horses all seem to be happy with their food uh hope the belgian stays up but it goes back down i'll just help them get back up other than that everybody else is looking good somebody i can see [Music] [Music] all right heidi's getting put up looks good this is tg he's one of the three paints that was surrendered i've been doing a lot of riding with him and just getting miles on him we worked through some groundwork at first just to get him through some behavioral issues and now he's been doing pretty good he's getting softer and lighter in the mouth every day that i ride him he would make a really nice little ranch pony if someone wanted to work with him has a nice stop on him he can be a little on the lazy side going forward but as he gets worked more he gets better he doesn't neck rain just yet but i don't think it would take much to teach him so hopefully he can find a home with someone and they can make him a little working horse good boy he's turned out to be one of my favorites of the three paints we've got a bit of a storm rolling in getting pretty windy and they're still up on the roof getting it all finished up coming together it looks really really nice vana and daisy were just surrendered and we're so thankful that their owners chose to bring them here they just have a great pasture and the horses both easily found her and they didn't want anything bad to happen to them so they decided to surrender them here they were worried about trying to find a good home didn't want them to end up in the slaughter pipeline and we so appreciate them for bringing vanna and daisy here it was super hard for them to surrender their horses to us and they were both very sad and careful and didn't want to be on camera or have any photos or anything and just really worried about condemnation and and being thought of as bad people but um when we have people surrender here we do our best not to be condemning or make them feel bad because we want them to know that this is a safe place for their horses and that we're not going to bash them or be mean to them and it's just really hard for them so sad to see them crying and having such a struggle to leave their horses here we want all the surrenders that surrender here to know that this is a safe haven for them and their horses and that we um offer no judgment um we take all surrenders no questions asked [Music]
