this mass for sister helen one of our sisters of nativity sisters it was death anniversaries today and we also pray for sharon carr on her 60th birthday today praying for the quick recovery of burley mills who has corvid and we also pray for the soul of anima joseph and today we have the birthday of grace with us so we pray for grace as she turns second two years old today and we also pray in thanksgiving for luis and benedict celebrating their 44th wedding anniversary today as well in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the grace of our lord jesus christ the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all let us prepare ourselves by calling to mind our sins and asking for god's pardon and missing i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and in what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and to you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring a reading from the prophet isaiah thus says the lord shout for all you are worth raise your voice like a trumpet proclaim the false to my people their sins to the house of jacob they seek me day after day they long to know my ways like a nation that wants to act with integrity and not ignore the law of its god they asked me for laws that i just they long for god to draw near why should we fast if you never see it why do penance if you never notice look you do business on your fast days you oppress all your workmen look you quarrel and squabble when you fast and strike the poor man with your past with your fist fasting like your today will never make your voice hurt on high is that the sort of fast that pleases me a truly penitential day for men hanging your head like a reed lying down on sackcloth and ashes is that what you call fasting day acceptable to the lord is not this the sort of ass that pleases me it is a lord who speaks to break unjust fetters and do the tongues of the yolk to let the oppressed go free and break every oak to share your bread with the hungry and shelter the homeless poor to clothe the man you see to be naked and not to turn from your own kin then will you then will your light shine like the dawn and your wound be quickly healed over your integrity will go before you and the glory of the lord behind you cry and the lord will answer call and he will say i am here this is the word of the lord thanks very good your is a broken humble art of god will not spawn a broken humble heart oh god he will spare have mercy on me god in your kindness in your will [Music] lord jesus christ [Music] reading from the holy gospel according to matthew john's disciples came to jesus and said why is it that we and the pharisees fast but your disciples do not jesus replied surely the bridegroom's attendance would never think of mourning as long as the bridegroom is still with them but the time will come for the bridegroom to be taken away from them and then they will fast the gospel of the lord praise jesus christ isaiah gives a very unique perspective on our invitation to fast during lent we often identify fasting as in the way of reducing our intake of food but isaiah says we need to identify and reduce the things that damage and oppress the poor and we need to promote justice on behalf of those in need genuine fasting cannot be separated from another classic jewish ideal of arms giving or sharing our resources with others that was the core of isaiah's message today now a few days ago ashwini's day recommended us that we take up the three lenten disciplines for prayer fasting and arms giving throughout this lent but isaiah also reminds us that all these three stand or fall together not just distinctly three but they all go hand in hand fasting is saying no to food or saying no to something at the same time saying yes to something else for example we can fast or abstain from food one meal a day or skip one meal and then it could be the expense incurred could be as little as few dollars but how about putting that few dollars into the project combustion box every few days in a week so therefore you are fasting as well as you are giving arms out of your sacrifice your endurance of hunger so any service done in love is acceptable to god even if it is as little as three or four dollars or five dollars that is how we do real time real way of charity for the poor out of our own sacrifices so let us ask the lord to strengthen us in our self-denial that we may set our minds and hearts firmly on him lord our true joy is in you but as followers of christ we may conform to the precepts of heavenly father let us pray to the lord lord our true joy is in you that god's people may preserve in their lenten sacrifices let us pray to the lord lord our true joy is in you that all who deny themselves for the lord's sake may find happiness with him let us pray to the lord lord our true joy is in you that the sick and the dying and those who are faced with life sorrow may be filled with god's grace let us pray to the lord and true joy is in you that our deceased relatives and friends may freely share in the life of god let us pray to the lord lord our true joy is in you prayer for the protection of life god our father order of life we thank you for our lives please help us always respect the lives of all children from conception to natural death let your spirit enlighten the minds and open the hearts of those who do not respect your will for the protection of all human life in the world bring to repentance and conversion of heart all those who have done abortions or are involved in providing abortions in this way may their guilt be washed away as they come to know your merciful love and forgiveness we ask this through christ our lord amen heavenly father grant us the strength to devout our souls to their life in the spirit that we may rise now above our weaknesses and share fully in the resurrection of everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for by your gracious gift each year your faithful await the sacred paschal feast with joy of minds made pure so that more eagerly intent on prayer and on the works of charity and participating in the mysteries by which they have been reborn they may be led to the fullness of grace that you bestow on your sons and daughters and so with the angels and archangels with thrones and dominions and with all the hosts and powers of heaven they sing the hymn of your glory without end we acclaim holy holy lord god of us heaven and earth are full of your glory o sana in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord a sana in the highest you are indeed holy o lord the founder of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was
