the following presentation of the mass is made possible by your generous support of the catholic tv network oh the catholic tv network welcomes and invites you to celebrate the sacred mysteries listen to god's word and in the holy eucharist proclaim the victory of jesus over death until he comes in glory in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the grace of our lord jesus christ the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit to be with you all and with your spirit good morning i'm father anthony cusack from saint mary's in scituate i'm one of the co-pastors of saint mary's institute and it is a great joy to be with you as we celebrate this mass together as we begin this lenten season brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and in what i have failed to do through my faults through my faults through my most grievous faults therefore i ask the blessed mary of a virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen lord have mercy lord have mercy christ have mercy christ have mercy lord have mercy lord have mercy let us pray almighty ever living god look with compassion on our weakness and ensure us your protection by stretching forth the right hand of your majesty through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of the prophet isaiah thus says the lord if you remove from your midst oppression false accusation and malicious speech if you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted then light shall rise for you in the darkness and the gloom shall become for you like mid-day then the lord will guide you always and give you plenty even on the parched land he will renew your strength and you shall be like a watered garden like a spring whose water never fails the ancient ruins shall be rebuilt for your sake and the foundations from ages past you shall raise up repairer of the breach they shall call you restorer of ruined homesteads if you hold back your foot on the sabbath from following your own pursuits on my holy day if you call the sabbath a delight and the lord's holy day honorable if you honor it by not following your ways seeking your own interest or speaking with malice then you shall delight in the lord and i will make you ride on the heights of the earth i will nourish you with the heritage of jacob your father for the mouth of the lord has spoken the word of the lord [Music] teach me our way your lord that i may walk in your truth teach me your way your heart that i may walk in your truth [Music] you o lord are good and forgiving abounding in kindness to all call upon you again o lord to my prayer and attend to the sound of my pleading teach me your way o lord that i may walk in your truth all the nations you have made shall come and worship you o lord and glorify your name for you are great and you do one trustees you alone are god teach me [Music] praise to you lord jesus lord christ christ king of our last glory take no pleasure in the death of the wicked says the lord but rather in his conversion that he may live praise to you lord jesus christ [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory jesus saw a tax collector named levi sitting at the customs post he said to him follow me and leaving everything behind he got up and followed him then levi gave a great banquet for him in his house and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were a table with them the pharisees in their scribes complains to his disciples saying why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners jesus said to them in reply those who are healthy do not need a physician but the sick too i have not come to call the righteous to repentance but sinners the gospel of the lord we hear today of the call of levi better known to us as matthew as the apostle matthew as saint matthew he is so impressed perhaps overwhelmed by the sheer presence of jesus by his invitation with two simple words follow me that he gives up everything he gives up his whole former way of life to follow jesus at his house as he throws a banquet for jesus as there are other tax collectors around him the pharisees and the scribes see levi matthew his fellow tax collectors only for their faults only for their sins so they say to jesus why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners jesus of course says that it is the sick who are in most need of a physician now the pharisees and the scribes also need jesus they are also a little sick as we all are and we are in need of jesus the divine physician to heal us but the difference is levi knows this he abandons his way of life to follow jesus the tax collectors the sinners are willing to be with jesus to allow him to tell them how to live the pharisees and the scribes are not they do not want the physician to heal them they do not want to be healed they do not think that they have any sort of sickness that they need to be healed in any sort of way and so i think there can be a temptation for us to be a little bit like the pharisees and the scribes when we are the good ones when we are the mass goers when we are the ones trying to do god's will the best of our abilities it is easy for us to point out the sins of others we can congratulate ourselves and say well at least i'm not doing fill in the blank x y and z at least i'm not doing that we can have that temptation to regard others indeed to define others according to their sins or we can do the same thing with ourself to define ourselves according to our sins we can allow our sins to keep us from jesus when it should be the exact opposites that in our sins in our fallenness in our sickness we need the divine physician more than ever it is precisely when we fall into the greater the sin the more urgent the need into the arms of jesus that we rush back to him back into his arms whenever we sin and so this time of lent is about acknowledging our sins not as something that defines us not that i am my sins not as something that should keep me from jesus but as the exact opposites i am a little sick and i am in need of the divine physician to heal me and so we recognize that as jesus looks to levi as he looks to matthew and sees him not just as the sum total of his sins but sees him as a son of his heavenly father who he wants to be his disciple and gives him that invitation follow me jesus looks at us with that same love yes he sees our sins that's another mistake we can make jesus does not necessarily turn a blind eye to our sins he's not saying that us sinners can keep on sinning and there's nothing wrong with that no he calls us to move he calls us to conversion he calls us to follow him and so he doesn't see us as the sum total of our sins he doesn't see that as being the most important part of who we are but he also doesn't turn a blind eye to our sins he looks at us with that great love and gives us that same offer to follow him as matthew does the tax collector to leave everything behind to follow him the psalm says today teach me your way o lord that i may walk in your truth this time of lent is allowing jesus to teach us that we may walk closer in his truth to be willing that to take that good honest look of ourselves in the mirror to acknowledge what are the sins that i need to repent of to not be afraid to do that because those sins should not keep me from jesus because they do not define who i am we are defined by how jesus looks at us as sons and daughters of his heavenly father and we therefore should have that courage that there is no sin which should keep us from him there is no sin which defines us because he looks at us with that same look of love and so we ask that during this time of lent our hearts may be turned back to jesus that he may indeed teach us his ways that we may walk in his truth and that we may have the courage to respond with all our heart as levi does when jesus looks at us with that same love and he says to us those same words follow me placing our love and our trust and our heavenly father let us now offer to him our prayers our response is have mercy god in your kindness that god's people may remove from the church the pointing of fingers and the speaking of evil we pray have mercy on god in your kindness that those preparing for baptism may be signs of god's glory to the baptized we pray have mercy god in your kindness that god may strengthen the spirits and bones of the poor and the afflicted we pray have mercy god in your kindness for the situation in ukraine that people may be assured of our prayers we pray have mercy god in your kindness that our lenten penance may repair the breaches among us we pray have mercy god in your kindness that the dead may drink of the water of life we pray have mercy god in your kindness heavenly father look with kindness on these and on all the prayers that we offer you for we do so in union with our blessed mother mary and in the name of your son our lord jesus christ who lives and reigns with you in the holy spirit god for ever and ever amen [Music] [Music] [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father hands to the praise accept we pray o lord the sacrifice of conciliation and praise and grant that cleansed by its working we may offer minds well pleasing to you through christ our lord amen amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you have given your children a sacred time for the renewing and purifying of their hearts that freed from disordered affections they may so deal with the things of this passing world as to hold rather to the things that eternally endure and so with all the angels and saints we praise you as without end we acclaim [Music] i blessed is he who comes here [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] we proclaim your death [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and sean our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] at the savior's command informed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and save from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you always your spirit let us offer each other the sign of peace [Music] [Music] lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us the lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us [Music] peace [Music] behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed [Music] so [Music] do [Music] so [Music] let us pray nourished with the gift of heavenly life we pray o lord that what remains for us a mystery in this present life may be for us a help to reach eternity through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit may almighty god bless you the father the son and the holy spirit amen go forth the mass has ended thank you speaker [Music] me we have worshipped god the
