what's the best way to get food is it sustainable agriculture no is it a home-cooked meal absolutely not it's going out to eat and that's true in real life but it's also true in Skyrim but how do you know which places to go well that's what we're gonna find out today as I travel around Skyrim reviewing some of its most popular dining establishments for service for food for Ambiance for health code violations everything you could think of in the first place we're going is a little town called Whiterun and a cute little Local Tavern called the bannered mayor here we go the managers are yelling at the staff right away not a good sign so really what we're going to be sort of judging is the operation itself right how's the Ambiance how are the staff are they following health code that type of stuff so let's do a little walk around here and take a look first and foremost we get a shelf you've got a sword next to wine and a thing of cheese as a gigantic wheel of cheese my guess is this is some sort of Lost and Found because there's absolutely no Rhyme or Reason to what you're putting here you know or it could be these this could be employee drinks you know every that's which is nice it's nice of you to allow your employees to keep their personal effects in their workstation so nice work got some cleaning apparatuses back here that's good that means they're washing their dishes keeping all your pots and pans and whatnot nicely organized Shelf with wine you've got your tankers there broom to sweep I mean this is this is looking pretty good as a front of house operation you're doing you're doing pretty well staff seems you know as happy as any staff's gonna be at a working in food service so that's fine you know they're doing their job so that's good look at a table presentation here these people are eating some sort of melon uh they're eating a or an apple and a whole pie that's nice it's a nice presentation you can see their cups all match you know you look on here you've got cups and all of that using the same color scheme as the rugs and one which is really very nice candles for lighting and Ambiance you can't deny that ma'am hello how are you doing I'm a food critic and a restaurant inspector what do you got going on here you've decided to order the oh the classic bread and four tomatoes combo you must be Italian so the front of house operation here is looking really very good if the back of house is anywhere near as good as this uh this place is really going to be in very good shape so let's take a look at the back of house here let's see you've got your meat smoking very good proper Fanta not proper ventilation for you they excuse me okay so they're venting the smoking meat smoke directly into employee quarters or or some sort of living space which is exceptionally dangerous that is like that's that's even Beyond health code that's fire code I'm gonna need to speak to your manager later but we'll get to that organizationally you've got your prep stations everything's nice they've got their uh well organized I assume these are recipe books here which is good shelving was is looking neat and organized you've got all your supplies available things drying the only thing that's slightly concerning is we're storing meat right raw meat doesn't appear to be salted we're storing that inside when in Skyrim we have the perfect opportunity to have sort of some kind of ice box outside so you know maybe these are just these haven't been here very long but that's just what catches my eye right so for the bannered mayor what are we thinking strong focus on good aesthetic design good front of house operation things are clean and organized staff are doing their jobs a couple of things that I think they need to look out for in order to improve for my next return number one management needs some leadership duties okay they are definitely managing but are they really leading I don't know about that number two you cannot have smoke for meat smoking directly like have no ventilation system whatsoever you're gonna kill people that might explain some of the ways that people are behaving in the town you know let's get that checked out for sure and then number three this this might be a pass that's something that they are doing but we gotta store our meets outside guys we got to we can't just have raw meat in a warm room sitting there for God knows how long when you have a perfectly good climate for a nice ice box outside okay so all together ma'am you're running a perfectly acceptable operation uh but I'm going to give you a c plus for this today okay those Health five those health hazards are no joke no joke get those cleaned up and you're gunning for an a maybe even a Michelin star next up we're traveling north Westward to an interesting little city called Morthal on the outskirts skirts of the capital of solitude Morthal is a miserable little town but even miserable little towns need Inns they need taverns they need food and we're better to find it than a little place called The more side Inn coming inside here what are we seeing well certainly less money put into the Ambiance this is a very uh sort of traditional Tavern layout for Skyrim of course fire pit in the middle nice and long it's cold up here so it's good to have that big tall ceilings Let the Smoke ventilate you'll love to see that that's wonderful let's take a look at some of the details of the Ambiance shall we number one I really enjoy these eating trays and you have these symmetrical uh we assume some sort of goat's horn really nice you have those on every table another thing you notice on every table Bread and Wine which implies that the uh The Bread and Wine may actually be complementary with uh with an order that you make sort of like uh you know the unlimited breadsticks you get at Olive Garden one of my favorite establishments in terms of uh just how high quality it is you've also got behind every table just like a some sort of animal skin again that's not personally my favorite aesthetic but um on Second Glance they do care somewhat about making things look nice in here there is some consistent detail to how things are laid out and or to how things are decorated so that's quite nice and I assume you must be the owner is that right Jonna hello Janna how are you how's business here in northol Jonah no it just ain't there at all oh bad it's not there maybe some of the maybe we can bring you some press you know with this good review now John if you don't mind I'm gonna we're gonna take a look at the uh sort of the back of your front house operation here what do we have oh my goodness look at this selection first of all very well organized very it's in reach of the bartender which is great when you're running an operation that's going to have a short staff like somewhere that doesn't get a lot of business have everything within Arm's Reach that's really really good you've also got a self-defense Hammer there that's something that a lot of my jobs I wish we would have had at times for certain people who try to come in now what I'm curious about is is that the extent of the back of house operation because I'm not actually seeing you know all these other rooms are in rooms you know for beds and whatnot there actually isn't a back of house so this seems to be the extent of where we must be doing prep so I suppose what we're assuming is we're using the community fire for cooking as evidenced by the pots here maybe doing our prep on some of the table surfaces when the when there aren't any guests which really is generally not my preference I don't like to see that I like to see those areas totally separate it's not you know necessarily a health code violation there's nothing against the rules in the uh the health code you are allowed to do that it's just uh in my opinion kind of a restaurant faux pas so not the end of the world but I do like the subtle decorative details of this location and it really does seem like she's working with a limited tool set here and I always respect that a lot so so how do we feel about this place well the good excellent use of minimal resources right very efficient setup sustainable business model even when the business is slow nice attention to subtle details uh in decoration proper ventilation for the fire wonderful the only thing you can really knock it for is uh the just the lack of uh dedicated prep stations that's not a huge problem necessarily again it's not inherently dangerous but it does mean that you just have to be very careful particularly when you're talking about possibly we don't know for sure but prepping food on a Surface that's going to have money or possibly vomit on it given the amount of alcohol so Jonna for the for the more side in I'm happy to award you a very nice B minor thank you so much for having me we'll see you next time buy something cop Jesus make yourself useful from Morthal what made the most sense for our next travel Adventure would be to head up to Solitude and check out what the capital city had to offer if any place was going to give us the extravagance that we'd be looking for why can't I fast travel the name of the local Inn here in solitude is called the Winking skeever the outside is very old beautiful moss and the sign itself is very very uh detailed ornate and clean so that's uh we've got high expectations going in we're going to wait our turn after that gentleman must be a popular place let's take a look at the Winking skeever oh my God okay so they've got a Hostess that's nice or someone who's pretending to be a Hostess wow look at what we have here this is extravagant first thing you wonder is are we owned or In Cahoots in some way with the people in Whiterun because we we do have a similar kind of again the blue and gold color scheme going on here we're using the same cookware so we were likely ordering from similar Distributors as the people in white one white run which is not uncommon in food service that in a locality you're gonna use a lot of the same Distributors because those you know they're reliable and you want to give them your business so now one little pet peeve of mine is if you're gonna spend the money to get all the same plates right why are what are you doing with your rugs things like that these are these kinds of details that I'm talking about I can understand if you wanted to use you know a rug like this maybe in one of these back areas because they have sort of this dingy bar area and I don't mind that I think that's totally fine to have separate Aesthetics and separate separate parts of the restaurant but we're just being a little messy with the uh with the Aesthetics in here all right so this is the owner of the Winking skiver a guy named corpulis vinnius uh he's someone who dresses like he's working class but talks like he's not I had a pet skiver when I was a boy and he used to wink corporalis if you don't mind we're going to take a look in the back here so let's we'll start over here we've got uh goblets and wine a lot of wine or a big big wine uh place I suppose we must sell a lot of it you got some cob corporalis it's a mess down here what are you doing uh you're under inventoried on goblets you don't have enough I see you've got a lot of them on tables but come on you know as well as I do that if you get a rush half of those are going to be in the dish pit and you're not you're going to need more you can't just have three backups and then you need to we need to clean up this I don't know what what kind of attention to detail is going on here corporalis but come on storeroom closet you see you've got more goblets bring them out for God's sake Jesus we're storing meat next to a pot on just a regular like a serving plate we could be using that out and about like why do you have these two over here but this Alto line over there group them together for God's sake make because you got to do inventory at the end of the month make it easy on yourself corporalis my God and let's see back over here this must be the oven that they're primarily using to cook actually you can see they're cooking right now they got beef cooked and they're what is that a potato and you're we're just putting cabbage next to some fire for some reason I don't know uh this is a beautiful oven and if you'll know check this out that's some ventilation right there that is wonderful you love to see that yeah big beautiful keg right here that's wonderful clearly there was money spent right at this uh at this establishment let's inspect down in the basement sometimes there's storage and stuff down there yeah look at this I mean this is it really is a beautiful space loads of storage yeah we got tons of equipment we really shouldn't have cheese stored down in this uh damp area it should be up top where it's going to get sold and eaten who knows how long it's been sitting there but it is I mean it's a beautiful space you can't deny that so what's the rundown on the Winking skiver here well the good is beautiful building great bones really the bones are the main thing that that you got going for us there seems to be a really excellent wine program which is also something that's good to inherit But ultimately this restaurant is um it's giving I opened a restaurant because I'm rich and I don't actually know how to run a restaurant or know anything like or care about doing a good job I'm just going to use money to compensate for everything the aesthetic is a little bit muddy storage is a mess you have underutilized equipments in the basement and the bartender seems like an [ __ ] so at the end of the day corporalis unfortunately I'm gonna have to award you a d you are wasting all the potential here there's absolutely nothing remarkable that you're doing um with this restaurant in this space it could be it could be a lot better I'm going to be honest it could be a lot better you need to clean up your act okay you need to clean up your act now I can't deny I was a little disappointed after going to the Winking skeever and I was hoping that our last stop of the day would be a proper pick-me-up some good home style cooking that's propped up by love and not by money and that desire is going to take us to Markarth Markarth has a long and interesting history full of blood and Mining and that history is going to bring us to the silver blood Inn very excited about this one and upon first glance this is very unique so we'll do a quick walk around to the front of house first and foremost um it's a mess that's the first thing I can say not a lot of tables not a lot of seating it definitely feels very bar oriented and not really restaurant oriented you've got this big beautiful bar with uh well I was gonna say lots of seating but it actually is kind of standing room only this is the type of place that would be good for a karaoke night again a staple you've got a wonderful Central fire not a huge one but it does have a very uh what looks to be quite a comprehensive ventilation system so that's good to see the energy of the patrons is a little interesting this kind of feels like the type of place that you walk into and everyone just sort of eyeballs you because this is like for locals and you're not supposed to be there what's your name sir do you run this place Clepper this is the silver blood in I'll let you figure out who owns it by yourself now that's a good representation of that energy I was talking about not very welcoming at all and I'm not against is going to somewhere that's unwelcoming if it makes up for it in other ways right now as beautiful of a space as this is they haven't really done anything with the Aesthetics so you've got one table over here seems to be being used for either prep or storage you've got potatoes and cabbage just kind of sitting around the shelves are an absolute mess a real disaster I don't know why we're storing animal skulls next to like mugs with I assume flour and then like pots what like but this is a a real mess sorry I don't mean to intimidate this is a self-serve water station which is really nice good to have that at a bar you want to keep them hydrated obviously and then we take a look behind the bar and what do we see I mean this is this is a [ __ ] pigsty you've got rugs back here buckets bread what is are you snacking on the job first of all that is a health code violation mind you is there even like a back of house what do we have so okay there's more this is uh somebody's room they've got some kind of room service here there's just there's food on the floor oh Christ you've got I mean you've got food Spilled Out in the rooms yeah I'm uh I gotta say I am not um overly impressed with this place at all who are you ma'am you work here you come right to me if you find an unwashed floor or a lumpy bed okay so they've got one one half of the team that's running this place does have some some gumption I mean she was ready to clean she said you find something dirty let me know but obviously she's not very good at her job no offense I'm not going to say that to her face but I'll say it near her face and hope that she overhears my mother and father yell a lot always have oh it's a family-run business my mother and father yell a lot okay so that that is the energy it's giving us like we don't care get out of our store we'll do whatever we want at the end of the day what good is there to say about the silver blood Inn it's in a beautiful building it has a lot of potential pretty much everything else not that great the owner is a jerk it's extremely filthy and The Vibes are off unfortunately Clepper I don't like to do this but if you can't be bothered to pick up a mug and put it face up when it's within Arm's Reach you really don't deserve to be running a restaurant I'm giving you an F close it down start over be a jerk leper I'm not coming back to this filthy establishment I'm not coming back all right not coming back unfortunately our food tour of Skyrim today has uh has ended on a disappointing note my favorite place today was absolutely the uh place the inn in Morthal lovely Charming small town feel but as expected those big city restaurants they just lose the passion they don't know what they're doing they've got too much money now we're out of time for today's episode we will be returning to continue to review all of the restaurants in Skyrim as we
