i wonder you couldn't really man lanny it's a diagonal monster what's going on guys me and landon they're getting set up we're gonna do some night fishing tonight out here on the ohio river if you notice all the background noise we're not too far down from the dam we're fishing about a 40-foot hole right here we're fishing the current team over here on this side we've got slack water over here on this side we've got about three mile an hour current there's a big scour hole right here we're gonna fish hoping to get on some flatheads tonight it's that time of year water temperature 63 degrees been out here for a few hours trying to catch bait we couldn't come up with much bait we were trying to catch fresh skipjack [Applause] we got a couple skipjack about that size then we got some small ones so we don't have a ton of bait to go through out here tonight we're gonna have to kind of manage our bait we got some three-way rigs and some carolina rigs i really like the three-way rigs for a flathead fishing with cut bait or live bait i just think it gives a really really natural presentation in current now in slackwater three-way rig as usual we're gonna have to run some pretty heavy weights tonight eight to ten ounces i'm getting low on weights i'm having to put two or three smaller weights together to make a bigger weight i don't think the fish mine so you get these smaller skipjack nine and ten inch the yearlings those are the ones that were born this spring a lot of people throw them back but i actually really like them i'll show you what i do with them i've got two eight out hooks here about six inches apart both of them are snailed i'm gonna put the top hook through his nose and i'm gonna put the bottom hook right above the dorsal fin then come out you got to go in and then bring it out so that it sets up like that get the scales off then i just trim it off right behind the hook you don't always have to cut the head off and use a body chunk you can double hook rig that thing you can catch a small fish a big fish it's a great piece of bite right there lot of people ask me how to keep these three-way rigs from tangling up you know they're going to tangle up sometimes but the best the best advice i can give put you a swivel it doesn't have to be a chain swivel but some kind of swivel in between the hook and your three-way swivel that helps some make sure you put your bait on there in a way where it doesn't spin really bad for the most part you'll be tangle free normally when you reel it in guys the sinker line wraps around and around the hook line and you get it in you're thinking oh man it was tangled the whole time but that's usually not the case normally entangles on your way in we'll probably stay out here for a few hours if the fish are biting we'll stay as long as they want to bite that was quick it was on the bumping rod i just walked that one back guys until i couldn't get to go any farther and that's normally a good spot because that's a that's an area with less turn a lot of times that's where a big fish would be laying i put it in the rod holder turned around that thing was going over he's acting like a flathead oh he's coming up a little bit right there he is getting close to the boat that channel channel flight flight had that's a cool one there he's green i like to use those double hook rigs guys if i had one hook in that fish and used a bait that long i'd probably missed him because he had the bottom hook the bottom hook's the one that got him yeah boy he's pretty isn't it that's like a he's green there yeah i like him green ones and green ones are cool nice little fish let's have that again let's make it about a 40 or 50 pounder this time i was over there messing with the camera my storage is full i'm trying to go through some of the footage sort it out and get rid of some of the stuff that we're not going to use look back and this one's folding and it might not be a flathead but if i had to guess i'd say that's probably the majority of what we're oh there he goes he pulled a little bit there i have a decent one on there he's gotta be a flight here yeah he stayed up he stayed down for so long but i ain't gonna make no promises i don't want to sound stupid when i say it's a fly head and it's a channel cat he's going upriver in two mile-long return might be a decent fish he's coming up all the class though he hasn't took any drags yet there you go you pull a little bit look at that rod it's crazy how much power those fish have even small we even pull any drag i should let you reel to them you can have it i've got your next one oh he's taking some drag now yeah well this has been a great night two flatheads right off the bat it's gonna be bigger than the last one i can promise you that it's a flathead i did i just seen it looks like a 15 or 20 pounder man this turn is ripping right here [Music] folks i've been having great luck with them guys every flight head i catch is right in the corner just like it's supposed to be and hard to get out just like it needs to be oh that is a cool new fish there well that was on a whole skip jack and the last one was on a whole skip jack those little 10 inchers what do you think he weighs lynn he's probably 18 didn't he won't get a picture real quick all right so i got a quick weight on him he's 19 pounds nice little fish right there but we want his granddaddy we're gonna get him back in all right let's get another bait out there and do that again so you hear mostly people using live bait for flatheads and if i was fishing in a lake right now with no current or a river with no current i'd be using live bait but when you're fishing in current everything's moving anyway and i don't believe that the fish come up and check the bait for a pulse before they eat it so if it's moving it smells fresh looks fresh the fish is more than likely going to eat it so we use cut bait most of the time when we have good current like we do today we're just barely cutting the tail off to let a little bit of blood out but it's also going to release the blood slow enough to where that bait's going to last a long time put that right back where it's at i'm just throwing it out to the side of the boat in the fast current and letting the current sweep it in wherever that bait settles in at is also the place where all the baiting stuff's gonna be running because that's right at the edge of the seam look there look how look your fish landed we're gonna need the net white head or blue oh look there's another one doubled up doubled up just let him go he dropped it he might he might go back and get it though hard to beat fresh skipjack i don't know how long this bite's gonna last but boy it sure is fun when they're biting like this we're hoping to get that monster tonight oh yeah we'll just oh that's a big fish i didn't know it was like yeah bring him over here on the side because you're scaring me death of that motor i'm scaring myself today oh gosh you got him up in the current now there's not much current down on the bottom but on top it's ripping how big is he bigger than the one you caught last night he hurt my back look at that i know it's giving that rod about all at once he's showing me how he feels about this how far around this rod yeah he moving him big fishing current easy now be smooth don't go jerking on him just be smooth with him there you go just keep pumping it you'll get him up here look at that rod the whole time make sure it's staying bent this has been a 10 minute flight right here every bit of it i see him that's a daggone good fish it might be a 30. that's a little bit too much fish for you in this car didn't it my back's broken he's on the other side of the boat now he done took everything he had you're gonna have to you're gonna have to bring him in he's not gonna swim to you he's wore out he's just so much drags that's all the jerk oh i might have got a little more drag out of it but now i mean you're gonna have to here real i'll help you put some line on the reel here you got a real man i don't know that i can move him either thanks about everything i've got oh my gosh that's a 40. see that mouth i wonder you couldn't really man lady that's a diagonal monster okay let's get him in i need a bigger net yes you know they're very big on the camera but he's a monster come on look how deep that thing's hooked i mean it's very it's not a very big hook but it's got a lot of gap that's all you need right there really oh man oh my god let's get a weight on him i want to get him back in as quick as i can we got 45 pounds baby check that out all right let's get some pictures yeah i'm not going to all right let's get some pictures 45 pounds i guess you take the net off he's a 44 pounder but anyways it's a tag on monster i know that all right we're gonna get this guy revived and get him back in the water so somebody else can catch him make somebody else's day he's tired and i'm tired it was a heck of a fight right there for both of us you can see how fast the turn is right here there he goes he's ready to go he gave me a tail slap on the way out i like to see that man this has been awesome guys that's gonna do it for us today guys we had a great trip out here a 44 pound flathead but i want to thank you guys for watching don't forget to go down
