and pain and loss and misery but the very fact that god woke you up this morning is reason enough for you to take one minute and lift up your hands and give god a good break come on just walk around your living room just walk around your kitchen just walk around your bedroom get up out the bed you can't you can't worship laying in that bed get up out to bed and just start walking around and think of the goodness of jesus and all he's done for you think of how he kept you never left you he blessed you he held you he made a way for you made a way meeting your needs showing up just on time covering you keeping you sustaining you he's worthy [Music] hallelujah i'm trying to move on y'all hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah been so good been so good [Music] [Music] hey this is ghost tell everybody to sow a 90 900 seed everybody not you bishop are you telling me that 900 if you don't have 900 so 90 if you don't have 900 so 90 everybody that's on top of your i hear it in the holy ghost and god says yes if you are obedient when when that shunamite woman did what the prophet told her to do she did not just get what she needed she got more than she ever imagined that she could have and so today if i be not a prophet i want you to do right now 900 everybody that will this is your god has kept me seed your god has kept me seated 900 right now bishop i don't have 900 in the bank then a 90 this is not instead i want you to do this right now on top of your tithe if you're going to bring a seed to the church because the trustees are here i want you to bring that extra seed where i hear it come on i heard it in the holy ghost now here's what we're going to do in the sanctuary while you're sowing that we're gonna dance on your behalf because god has kept you to the interruptions into our regular programming and thank you that we don't mind getting out of your way and letting your spirit have the spirit's way yeah now god for every seed that was sown for every tithe that was getting given give and perform and do a miracle on behalf of everybody that was obedient in jesus name matthew chapter 5 lord have mercy it just broke out in here [Music] i tell people all the time and i'm unapologetic nothing like the black church the sound is unique our praise is special lord have mercy matthew chapter 5. [Music] right at verse 1. now when jesus saw the crowds he went up on a mountainside and sat down his disciples came to them to him and he began to teach them that's enough [Music] when jesus saw the crowds he went up on a mountainside and sat down now when jesus saw the crowd he went up on the mountainside and said and we are beginning a new series today that is going to be in my estimation the most important series for this body of christ in this season this new series is entitled getting back to the basics getting back to the basics and this morning i want to put a tag on this first installment i want to talk about i don't do crowds i don't do crowds this past week i was in houston texas participating in funeral a dear friend of bishop mckissick seniors through the years and his son dear friend of mine for over 30 years from seminary dr samuel jackson gilbert senior his son so powerfully and prolifically preached his eulogy on friday and he made a statement that the holy spirit said to me there is the introduction to this series he made this statement that seemed so simple and was so powerful he said one of the things i appreciated about my father more than anything else listen to what he said he never got used to being a christian hear that again he said one of the things i appreciate and respect and admired more than anything about my father is that he never got used to being a christian as i heard pastor gilbert say that about his father the first thought that entered my mind while i sat there was what has happened to that kind of christian the i believe the greatest enemy of christianity may be people who say they believe in jesus christ but are no longer astonished and amazed we are living in a time when faith is thin because our aching for what is above and beyond us has been anesthetized and our capacity for wonder and our capacity for the supernatural has been reduced to clever tricks bright lights and led screen when i heard pastor gilbert say that about his father i heard god say clear as a bell to me son i need my church to get back to the basics we we have gotten lost we've gotten lost in branding and business both of which have their place but should not have preeminent place we we've got to get back to the basics we we have allowed technology to beat our imaginations into submission where now television dominates our time alters our values and numbs us to the enjoyment of life we we no longer pray for the things that happened in the word of god we truth of the matter is we no longer really even preach the word of god now we preach how to sermons that amount to nothing more than ted talks in the sanctuary but don't tilt people towards god we need to get back to the basics so so god laid this series on my heart to challenge us and to stretch us and i i begin it with this sermon today this this text has some of the most beautiful verses of scripture that can be found anywhere it is known as the beatitudes somebody coined it as that but it is more properly understood as the sermon on the mount jesus in this sermon begins to describe the character of the kingdom or more specifically the character of those who connect to the kingdom as disciples and the point of the sermon on that mount that jesus preached was this there is a certain disposition that goes along with being a disciple and as i was reading through those verses again thinking that they were going to be a part of a new series i'm beginning on wednesday night 7 p.m midweek manor all of y'all need to be there as i was reading through these because i am going to begin a series on wednesday night on these very beatitudes i thought i was going to actually begin preaching the beatitudes this morning until that first verse and the a portion of the second verse arrested my attention look at those first two verses and this gonna mess some of y'all up that's why i'll let y'all shout for about 25 minutes cause this is not gonna be the shouting sermon but i hope it's the listening sermon i glanced over something so often but it hit me again because matthew begins this chapter listen by saying that jesus did something before he started saying something look look at how the story starts off and the implication is that jesus was attempting to talk to his disciples away from the crowds look at it again when jesus saw the crowd he went up on a mountain and sat down lord have mercy this this become jesus's first step in separating his disciples from the crowd this is gonna get good matthew makes the distinction very clear to us this sermon jesus teaches on that mountain is designed to set you apart from the world and make you different read it again when jesus saw the crowds is about to get bad he went up on a mountain and sat down and you know what the spirit said to me when i read that again jesus doesn't do crowds and if jesus doesn't do crowds then neither should you what we need today in this day and time is less concerned about the crowd and more concerned about disciples we we concentrate more on the crowd and give more attention to them than we do to disciples lord have mercy i can't tell you today after reading that text and writing this sermon i'm done with crowds crown crowds grow your numbers but disciples grow the kingdom i'm i'm done with crowds we we have too much of a crowd mentality we want to be with the crowd i know y'all gonna get quiet now we want to be in the in crowd or the popular crowd or the live crowd or the party crowd or the fun crowd or the click crowd or the young crowd or the new crowd or the smart crowd or the daring crowd but jesus even warned us in his word about the unnecessary nature of crowds because he said where two or three gather in my name there will i be in the midst of them jesus does not do crowds that there's a deep suggestion in this and that is if you are walking in the real character of discipleship you don't belong in crowds everybody can't be in your space and you can't be in every environment you you can't do what crowds do you can't go where crowd goes you you can't talk like the crowd talks you can't live like the crowd lives and be very clear i'm not talking about just crowds of the world but i'm talking about crowds in the church disciples don't do crowds it's going to get real bad because one of the signs of a maturing faith and one of the signs of a maturing person is how much smaller your circle is becoming yo your circle isn't getting smaller because you're boring it's getting smaller because you're maturing because you can't operate on the level of kingdom maturity and have kingdom advancement trying to stay connected to the crowd and i believe that's the lesson jesus was trying to teach on that day you you can't do here it is here it is ain't got nobody in here but praise team in the band here it is i love everybody but i can't do everybody and just cause i don't do you don't mean i don't love you i understand i'm not built to hang out with everybody because i'm a disciple let me i ain't got the two points y'all i'm gonna show you why you can't be in the crowd here it is because you operate on the priority of his presence this is going to get real bad please notice the text and the wording one more time when jesus saw the crowds he went up on the mountainside and sat down here it is and his disciples came to him y'all gonna miss it you're gonna miss it when jesus saw the crowd he went up on a mountainside here it is and his disciples came to him y'all don't get it jesus saw the crowd he went away from the crowd and when his disciples saw he went away from the crowd they came to him here it is nowhere in the text does it say he called for them preach rudolph mckissick it doesn't say he called for them it says they came to him they saw where he went and wanted to be where he was preach boy their passion and priority was the presence of the lord now here's where it's going to get bad for some of y'all oh came to the mountain but not all that came to the mountain came to the master i said that too fast let me say it one more time all came to the mountain but not all that came to the mountain came to the master see because too many simply get satisfied coming to the mountain okay um the mountain represents the church i'mma get in trouble so what this suggests to me is that the crowd does church but the disciples do jesus okay the crowd has church loyalty but disciples have jesus loyalty i'm about to stun some of you and i'm about to get in trouble and i know click tim clinton and meecham club well enough to know that they're going to agitate this somewhere on social media before the end of this day i'm about to stun some of y'all the church ain't god and don't confuse the two see here's the problem of today let me break it down for y'all on a psychological level an experiential existential level most of my generation and the generations behind me met the church before they met jesus i'm really about to get in trouble and then they grew up confused between the two yes and then many of them had a crisis of faith as they got older and quit the church because they met the church but they never met jesus because here's what they discovered as they got older the church is harder to love and serve jesus this is what the younger generation discovered when they saw the mess and the imaginations that go on in the church and because they met the church but never met jesus the church is harder to love and serve than jesus is okay i need to help some of y'all and that'd be all right y'all been mad with me i need y'all to understand today you are not in the church until you're in jesus and i need you to get it uh the church didn't give its life for you jesus the church didn't die and shed its blood for you the church didn't save you so the church ain't your lord and your savior the judge didn't promise to never leave you or forsake you the church won't get you to heaven don't you be in the crowd be a disciple that is in faith in the kingdom and in jesus who then makes a commitment to the church because that is a part of the process of maturing you into discipleship but the church ain't the cause of your discipleship now now it makes sense to me while research tells us only 20 of the members do 100 of the work because the rest of the folk in the crowd now it makes sense to me why you can call a choir rehearsal and you've got a hundred members but ain't but thirty showing up cause seventy of them are in the crowd of judah not the voices of judah now now it makes sense why statistics suggest that only 15 percent of the church are the real financial supporters of the work of the church because the other 85 percent are in the crowd but they didn't come to jesus i'm trying to get some of y'all out the crowd see because what we have what we have in this mountain are disciples and crowd i'm i'm i'm i'm done carrying what the viewership looks like on facebook on sundays i'm i'm done cause i got enough sense to know uh those four or five thousand folk that are watching only about 200 of them came to jesus i don't want the mountain i want his presence because disciples come to where they see him in that what he said come unto me oh ye are weary and heavy laden and i will give you rest and if nothing else this season should have i know i'm gonna get in trouble this season should have taught some of y'all that you ain't got to be in the church to worship jesus this season should have taught some of y'all that you can find jesus wherever you are this season should have deepened your discipleship deepen your commitment and i gotta say i know i'm gonna get in trouble with this series i got a funny feeling and a sneaky suspicion that some may not even come back to church because they discovered that sunday had become before the virus being with the crowd and not being with the christ i got a feeling some folk may not come back because they've discovered now they can get a word and hear a sermon without the interrupting distracting foolishness that goes on on the mountain got a feeling i got a feeling some folk left the mountain but found the master that's my last point i only had two i'm hoping some of y'all are coming out the crowd today i hope some of y'all as we begin this series are determining i'm not gonna be in the crowd i'm gonna be a disciple here it is crowds are astonished while disciples are committed okay um to really get this you got to go over to chapter seven if you really if you really want to get this you got to go over to chapter seven this gonna mess you up this time and you gotta go all the way to the end of chapter seven this is gonna bless you watch this watch this it says at the end of chapter seven when jesus had finished saying these things the crowd was amazed at his teaching i'ma break that down for you because he taught as one who had authority and not like the teachers of the law this is about to get good um um there are few things i need you to get this here's what that really implies here's what they basically said and i'ma break it down for you here's what they basically said and did now that this teaching is over it was good to hear him now let's go and do what we were doing before after the benediction they they walked out and off the mountain saying bishop jesus show did preach us silly today what did he preach about how no child but he was on fire benediction was over all the crowds walked away going going going home saying lord i tell you that bishop did you hear him modulating and only doing it today yeah what was the title last sermon i don't know y'all i'm gonna have to go back and see if i can watch it again cause i missed all of that let's go to brunch and get a drink the crowd was astonished at the teaching of jesus don't don't miss where i'm ago but that wasn't enough because they didn't count the cost of what he had taught read it again the crowd was amazed at his teaching here it is because he taught as one who had authority you got to break that down into greek here it is their astonishment had more to do with the way jesus taught then what he taught lord have mercy they were all struck at his delivery oh they they they went home talking about how he sounded and how he put it together but had no reflection or made no decision about what was said because crowds this about to get me in trouble crowds come to be dazzled and energized but not educated are astonished for a while then they go home and continue living their life the way they always lived it proud look at it again go go back go back to our our verses in verse five when jesus saw the crowd he went away from them and sat down his disciples came to him here it is and he taught them he taught the ones who came to him to be taught because you're getting the message ain't dependent on the delivery of the teacher it is dependent on your ability to surrender to want to listen um he taught them now here's what's deep it's gonna get deeper y'all remember his disciples are jews they're not they're not sinners they're jews they know the torah they know the law they know the midrash they know everything they know the law they are obedient to the commands of the torah and yet being good jews it says he taught them i'm trying to figure out why you what are you teaching them jesus remember i told you the bad beatitudes give you the lifestyle of discipleship and kingdom and here's what the holy spirit said to me too many have spent their time learning about jesus but never learning from jesus they were jews which mean they had religion but jesus teaching them means that what they had learned had taken them as far as it could take them they went to jesus and he began to teach them see here's the problem in the church beloved we no longer want to be taught we want to be entertained i know i know too many of us have been practicing a religion that is more bondage than blessing bondage to rules bondage to denomination bondage to worship styles bondage to customs bondage to it always happen to be what it used to be which means now church has become more inspirational than transformational preach boy um we we we meechum we have idolized jesus and sacrificed intellect on the altar of being inspired so so so we want a preacher who makes us promises in order for us to praise where the preacher becomes a liar about what god is going to do for the next five folk that jump up and holler so because we just want to be energized and inspired but don't want to be taught we want a preacher who's a liar next five folk that holler the next three people that run to the altar god's gonna do this and this god's gonna put a check in the mail the next six people that jump up and turn around god told me to tell you your debts are canceled and every one of them debt collectors are gonna call this week help me preach this this morning so what has happened in the church is now people leave their brains in the car when they come to the sanctuary because we don't need our mind to dance and shout we just want to be entertained and not empowered but jesus taught them no music no announcements no praise team no band no bright lights no dry fog no disneyland all he did was teach them and we have become so crowd conscious that we're now trying to create a church that satisfies the crowd instead of moving the crowd to the mountain to jesus and don't get me wrong don't get me wrong inspiration is good inspiration is needed but inspiration a sermon that is inspirational music that is simply inspirational church that is simply inspirational those are needed every night and then but inspiration is a pick me up not a grow me up and two many of us come to church for a pick me up but never get a grown meal that's why you're still gossiping that's why you're still an alcoholic that's why you still keep mess going that's why you can't get your marriage together that's why you can't get your mind right that's why you're not in peace because all you want is to pick me up but not a grow me up he taught them i'm done read the beatitudes he taught them how to pray taught them how to give taught them how to love their enemies taught them how to be sought taught them how to be light taught them how to forgive taught them how to be meek taught them how to be merciful taught up how to be peacemakers start them how not to clap back that people taught them how to keep their marriage taught them how to have integrity taught them how to keep their word taught them how not to be vengeful taught them how to love their enemies daughter how to serve the need he taught them how not to wear how to seek the kingdom first taught him how not the judge taught him how to know god's will taught him how to ask and get it taught him how to seek and find it taught him how to knock and it will be over taught him how to not worry taught him how to pray in their closet he doesn't teach him how to speak in tongues he don't teach him how to dance he don't teach him how to sing he don't teach him tv production he taught them how to live we have got to get back to the basics we have more production meetings than prayer meetings you have more ministry meetings than teaching meetings but i can't leave you there because here's the good news by the time you get to chapter eight texts suggest to us that some that had been in the crowd had become disciples i couldn't leave you there because here's the challenge i'm putting on you today and for the rest of this series um that evidently at some point the crowds got thirsty enough for what the lord was teaching that some of them went up to where the disciples were and begin to hear his teaching can i talk to you do you know why so many of the younger generation are leaving our main line traditional churches because we got 25 minutes of teaching an hour and a half of music and announcements and foolishness and people want the word today and if you've been in the crowd the good news is he stays on that mountain long enough for you to change your mind and let me tell you what i should have shouted some of us because some of us can testify i didn't start as a disciple i started in the crowd but jesus had mercy long enough for me to get where i'm supposed to be some of y'all ought to rejoice today that i don't have to be in the crowd i don't have to stay in the crowd i can shift and become a disciple and get committed and live a lifestyle of kingdom advancement i don't have to be in the crowd i'm i'm done i'm i'm done i'm done who who are you going to be are you going to be in the crowd or are you going to be a disciple i'm i'm challenging every body that's in a ministry starting with everybody you you you've been in the choir stop being in the crowd [Music] be committed talking to folk on the praise team stop being in the crowd be committed talking to all the women women of purpose talking to all the men for the fight club talking to young adults pathway youth one way don't be in the crowd i'm talking to deacons some deacons some trustees some ushers but when we gonna meet that's a crowd question when you're gonna schedule church conference that's a crowd question well who's really running things up there that's a crowd question you haven't been a tither i'm challenging you stop stop giving your crowd offering be a disciple i'm challenging you to develop a prayer life and stop just praying over your food that's crowd living i'm challenging you for some of you i'm challenging you to get out of the crowd some of y'all like clicks too much you want to be in the popular crowd the talking crowd the gossiping crowd the safe space crowd the in crowd the young crowd you cannot be a disciple thirsty for crowd attention if this morning you're saying i wonder what he know i don't know nothing but now i know if you said that you need to leave the crowd we got to get back to basics the church has become too much of an entertainment production [Music] everybody got to have on the same colors and the preacher got to wear certain colors that's crowd stuff my prayer is deliver us god deliver us from this [Music] god says here's what god said to me and and i got confused and i said god i need you to say this again god said to me i want my church back and i said god what do you what do you mean you want your church back it's always your church he said it is my church but y'all stopped running it my way i want my church back a church that prays for the sick and they get healed a church that lays hands and folk get up out of wheelchairs a church that prays for the needy and does something for the needy a church that is full of tithers and they give by faith and not by checkbook balance a church that is loving and has the foundation of loving people a church that is not full of gossiping and backbiting and clicks and clubs and power struggles i want my church back who are you going to be [Music] you're going to be in the crowd are you going to see where jesus is and come where he is it's a simple question it's a simple question that's the challenge i put to us today and moving forward here's the challenge i put to some of you when you sold this morning when you gave this morning did you give like you're a disciple or did you give like you're in the crowd [Music] i cannot do ministry with crowd givers i cannot release vision with crowd givers [Music] come on praise him young come on over i can't we can't do ministry with crowd individual ministries in this church can't grow with crowd people [Music] we can how do you how do you have three four five thousand women in this church and only 40 get on women of purpose how do you have two or three thousand men in this church and only 15 get on fight club how do you have i know six seven hundred eight hundred folk who can sing got music in their voice but all you want to do is sit in the pew and be in the crowd how how can you know technology and all you do is sit at home and tell my lord they just can't get that production together well get out the crowd and come help [Music] we got folk on the production team running from the dungeon to run up here and fix cameras and running from one place to the other place and some of y'all sitting right at home no technology working technology but you'd rather sit in the crowd and analyze it you got music in your voice you sang at the church you came from and you'd rather just listen get out the crowd when we go to feed again thanksgiving time get out the crowd and come hell when i call for an offering because we've got things to do in the church get out the crowd and come hell stop having your priority inspiration and start wanting education that leads to transformation you wonder why your children don't want to come to church because they met the church but never met jesus get them in the church after they get jesus because it is the church where they grow in jesus so god today as we we start this lord have mercy we start this series and i know god it's a challenging series it's a rough series it's it's a series that hits us between the eyes but challenge us stretch us help us to analyze how we have managed our life of faith help us to get out the crowd and come where you are help us to see where you are and join you there help us to see where you're working and moving and join you there god forgive us for being seduced into becoming an inspirational place that never has transformation [Music] help us today i don't want to be a crowd church [Music] fill this place with disciples who are thirsty for you who who don't want to come to get inspired by a won't he do it or modulation or or a holler or a good foot tapping hand clapping song get give me disciples in this church who don't want to come to church simply to fellowship and look around and god fellowship is good we need fellowship hugging is good we we want to return to that day but god my prayer is when we return we will not return as a crowd we will return as disciples [Music] so god if there's anybody this morning who's been in the crowd but they want to become a disciple move on them right now if there's anybody who even hasn't been in the crowd they they haven't been anything the good news today is because your son died on the cross they can skip the crowd and come right to the christ [Music] move on them today in jesus name hey listen to me praise team is going to worship us out of here if you don't know jesus christ i'm going to give you a a new category today one you don't know jesus christ as your lord and savior today you want to say i want to give my life to jesus i believe that he died for my sins and that god raised him from the dead second category bishop i am saved but i've been out of church pandemic you know i just been disconnected and i get this from people in my dm's all the time i've been i've been visiting virtually for two or three months i'm blessed by your ministry and i tell each of them you don't have to stay that way because what this pandemic has done it has birthed the virtual church and we are working on some stuff that's going to make virtual church and we are working on a virtual campus it's going to be crazy when you see it here's the third category i want to add if the bishop i've been in bethel but i've been in the crowd and today i want to make a commitment to become a disciple i want to join a ministry i want to get into ministry i want to get committed to the ministry but more importantly than that i want to get committed to my growth and my development and the maturation of my faith if you're in any of those categories never given christ your life but you want to today save but you don't have a church you're not connected to a church whether you're in florida or timbuktu or i've been a member of bethel but i've been in the crowd and i want to become a disciple here's what i want you to do right now i want you to text what you see on the screen tbc decision to 5424 four do it right now tbc decision to five four two four four if you didn't sow that ninety dollar seed or some of you were bold enough to stretch your faith and sow the nine hundred dollar seat that's where i'm gonna land if you haven't done that i want you to run over and do that right now because you're a disciple i'm not making you any promises i'm not telling you what god's gonna fix god's gonna change i just did what god told me to do and i want you to be obedient to the voice of the prophet over your life on today hey wednesday night we gonna dive into these beatitudes at 7 00 p.m we're going to dive into these the attitudes i want you all to watch social media this week uh selena webster bass is finishing up her doctorate y'all i think it's a doctor ministry isn't it yeah and she's got a project for is it widows [Music] black mothers who are grieving the loss of their children the whole the spirit was moving so hard i had to keep going selena but uh what say babe from morning m-o-u-r-n-i-n-g to morning you're gonna see it on social media if you have lost a child lost a loved one she's going to be conducting something major for her project next week watch our social media this week for all that information listen praise teams getting ready to bless us and worship us out of here i hope this word blessed you stop going to happy hour with folk you don't like stop
