states by the rivers of Babylon there we sat down yay we wept when we remembered the Zion we hanged our harps upon the Willows and the midst thereof for there they that carried us away captive required of us a song and they that wasted us required of us mirth saying sing us one of the songs of Zion how shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land these people were without a song we as people of God are always in a terrible predicament when we lose our song you may lose your voice but don't lose your song you may go off pitch you may not be able to keep up with the rhythm but don't lose your song this particular Psalm recounts a period in the history of Israel when they were carried away captive actually to be specific it was the southern kingdom of Judah that went in the captivity in the land of Babylon actually it was one of the kings of the Lord's people Hezekiah who in ignorance laid the foundation for the Babylonian captivity you remember the story of how Hezekiah had received word from the prophet Isaiah to set his house in order that you must die that you cannot live but upon the strength of the life that he had lived before God he turned his face to the wall and more or less demanded of God that Father time served and for services rendered I'm not ready to go and I want you to let me stay here a little bit longer and God caught up with the prophet turned him around said go back and tell Hezekiah that I've heard his prayer and I've added 15 years to his life but during those 15 years he did something foolish when the princes of Babylon came up to Jerusalem Hezekiah expose the treasures of silver and gold that were in the Lord's house to these men from Babylon and by them knowing what was there in Jerusalem they thought this was just the so-called holy city place where the Hebrews had as a headquarters but they knew nothing of the great wealth and when they found out about the wealth that was there in the city Nebuchadnezzar would not be contented until he had captured the wealth of Jerusalem and in his first deportation he only carried out those choice young men the brilliant minds the intelligent one that he might train them for positions in government but 11 years later when King Zedekiah rebelled the second invasion and deportation was made of all of the inhabitants of Jerusalem to be carried down into the land of Babylon while they were leaving the city they saw the gates of the city being burned with fire the temple that had earlier been robbed they saw it destroyed and as they were being deported down into Babylon the young man was singing if I forget thee O Jerusalem let my right hand forget her cunning let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth if I fail to remember thee and when they finally got down into Babylon I believe it is the prophet Ezekiel that says by the river of Chiba there we sat down and they will carry to the various rivers and waters in the land of Babylon and bath by the banks of the river that captive said that we know a little bit about your history you had a king named David that was a great instrumentalists he played upon the harp until the evil spirits departed from rejected King Saul and then when David's time was up his son Solomon became king and Solomon was such a wise man that he spake three thousand proverbs and he did sing a thousand and five songs in the Bible we've just got one of them the song singular of Solomon there are thousand and four more of Solomon songs that we don't have so we know that you people are noted for music so saying for us one of the songs of Zion but they hung their harps in songless silence upon the Willows and said we cannot sing Zion songs because we are in a strange land well I believe that if they had had the real intelligence of knowing why God gives us a song in the first place they would have sung even though they were in captivity it's true the Zion songs are songs of victory but they were defeated Zion songs are songs of Liberty they were in captivity Zion songs are songs of deliverance but many times when the enemy has you bound you don't seem to be able to sing but you gotta learn how to sing your way out of what you know you may not have a voice that's ready to sign a recording contract but it's not what your voice does for others it's what your song does for you oh you don't hear what I'm saying I read in the scripture where it said but none saith where is God my makeup who give it songs in the night sometimes that's all you got to keep your company sometimes you're in such trouble and you don't know how you're gonna get out of it but deep down in your spirit you hear something saying and I know the Lord will make a way I don't know how he's gonna do it but somehow someway God will make a way they were down in Babylon and they they said we just cannot see the songs of Zion because we are in a strange land and oh when I look at some of God's people that used to be in the Quine used to be on the front row with the mission there isn't used to be working with the ushers used to be on fire and the next thing they moved to the back and then moves to the balcony and then moved out and you wonder what happened to them and they'll tell you about what somebody did but I got news for you if you keep your song you won't worry about what somebody did Nehemiah says neither be you sorry because the joy of the Lord is your strength oh I know we live in a world where people are insensitive they don't care about you they don't care what you're going through but they may be cursing you out talking about you behind your back and in front of your face but if you can keep the right spirit if you can keep your eyes focused on Jesus if you can keep the melody in your heart hallelujah remembering to worship the law by speaking to yourselves in Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs singing and making melody in your heart to God people can be taking you through and they don't understand how when you ought to be crying you'd be walking around with a smile they may not even hear the word they don't know what key you're in but down on the inside you're just singing within yourself something is cowering y'all one song of praise after another hallelujah you're communicating with the God that's your side you ought to touch somebody and tell them whatever is going on in your life don't let the devil catch you without a song Oh bless a name if you can keep a song in your heart if you can keep the melody in your soul doesn't matter what you're going through you can make it well I think a very good example in the New Testament is the example of Paul you know when Paul and Barnabas split up and Barnabas form the new duo with his nephew John ma and Paul chose Silas and when Paul wanted to go in another direction but was forbidden by the Holy Ghost and heard in the night vision a voice of a man saying come over in the Macedonia and help us when he got to Philippi which was the chief city of that portion of Macedonia he found the group of women holding a prayer meeting down by a certain body of water when he Paul got through speaking to the women that was one named Lydia a seller of purple who lived in the fight IRA Lydia from fat IRA when God opened her heart she opened her home said to the men of God that would we need the proud meeting and you don't have anywhere to stay come stay in my house daily they walk from Lydia's house to the proud meeting one day that was a young girl that had a spirit of divination in other words she was one of those that had she lived in this day would have said that you called my 900 number and I'll tell you what's going on in your life she had a spirit of divination fortune-telling took somebody and said she was a psychic every day yes Paul and Silas would pass by from Lydia's house to the pram meeting this girl would come running and crying after them saying these are the men of God that's showing us the way of salvation one day Paul was grieved in the spirit not that what she was saying was not right but it was because he realized that even though she told the truth she was possessed by demonic spirit and finally one day Paul commanded the devil that was in her hold your peace come out of the girl and when the devil came out she couldn't tell anymore fortunes she had to shut down her switchboard no need to call the 900 number because nobody was there to answer and when the girl was unable to make it in more money seven fortunes the men who were using her for pimps not pimps of her body but pimps of her mind and of her spirit when they saw that the hope of that gain was gone they drew Paul and Silas into the marketplace beat that clothes off of them and then late that evening threw them in to the Philippian jail in the evening while men were talking to one another Paul and Silas remained silent but way over in the midnight when everybody else was sound asleep I hear Paul telling Silas I'll tell you what brother we're down here in this Philippian dungeon everybody else has gone to sleep but their history in my spirit I'll tell you what if you'll sing a course from an old hymn I'll lead off in a word of Prayer Vava Bible seven acts 16 and 25 at midnight Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises under God look over and ask somebody how do you deal with your midnight see a lot of us when we go through our midnight we don't know how to handle it preacher what do you mean midnight when that's trouble in your home when that's death in your family put the bill thus act up and you don't have money to pay well your name is hung on the highway because somebody has taken on themselves too loud and you can't trace it down and can't stop it you're going through midnight sickness is in your body and the doctor says it doesn't look good I'm making give you nine months I Got News for you you're going through your midlife but when you're going through your midnight don't push the panic button but learn how to do like Paul and Silas in midnight Paul and Silas pray and sing praises under God they wouldn't do like the Hebrews down in Babylon and say you know they locked us up in this Jail on false charges and I just don't see you like singing but in other words they say it's midnight but I'm gonna sing my song [Applause] Paul and Silas pray and sing praises under God and the Bible said the prisoners heard them I want you to know the world is always looking at you those who are bound by the chains of the devil and if you stop cussing when things go bad on the job they realize that you don't have what you've been talking about but when everybody else has fly us to handle what everybody else's stop staring mad you got to learn how to deal with your midnight you can curse if your water but I'm gonna lift my hand and lift my voice and sing praises to God and why they were singing and praying I'm here Silas coming in with his tenor and I'm here Paul when it dropped in with his raspy baritone but when they got to the cause God dropped in with a rumbling bass and the prison stopped shaking and everybody's hands were loose and the door
