sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and in what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most gravious fault therefore i ask blessed mary everybody all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen lord have mercy lord have mercy christ have mercy christ have mercy lord have mercy lord have mercy let us pray grant almighty god through the early observances of holy lent that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses said to the people the priest shall take the punya from your hand and lay it before the altar of the lord your god then in the sight of the lord your god you must make this pronouncement my father was a wandering aramian he went down into egypt to find refuge there few in numbers but there he became a nation great mighty and strong the egyptians ill-treated us they gave us no peace and inflicted harsh slavery on us but we called on the lord the god of our fathers the lord heard our voice and saw our misery our toil and our oppression and the lord brought us out of egypt with mighty hand an outstretched arm with great terror and with signs and wonders he brought us here and gave us this land a land where milk and honey flow here then i bring the first fruits of the produce of the soil that you lord have given me you must then lay them before the lord your god and bow down in the sight of the lord your god the word of the lord thanks be to god responsorial psalm be with me o lord in my distress be with me o lord in my distress he who dwells in the shelter of the most high and abides in the shade of the almighty says to the lord my refuge my stronghold my god in whom i trust be with me o lord in my distress upon you no evil shall fall no plague approach where you dwell for you has he commanded his angels to keep you in all your ways be with me o lord in my distress they shall bear you upon their hands lest you struck your foot against a stone all the line on the lion and the viper you will tread and trample the young lion and the dragon be with me o lord in my distress his love he set on me so i will rescue him protect him for he knows my name when he calls i shall answer i am with you i will save him in distress and give him glory be with me o lord in my distress a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans scripture says the word that is the faith we proclaim is very near to you it is on your lips and in your heart if your lips confess that jesus is lord and if you believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead then you will be saved by believing from the heart you are made righteous by confessing with your lips you are saved when scripture says those who believe in him will have no cause for shame it makes no distinction between jew and greek all belong to the same lord who is rich enough however many ask for his help for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved the word of the lord thanks be to god praise to you o christ king of eternal glory man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of god praise to you o christ king of eternal glory the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you oh lord filled with the holy spirit jesus left the jordan and was led by the spirit through the wilderness being tempted there by the devil for forty days during that time he ate nothing and at the end he was hungry then the devil said to him if you are the son of god tell this stone to turn into a loaf but jesus replied scripture says man does not live on bread alone then leading him to a height the devil showed him in a moment of time all the kingdoms of the world and said to him i will give you all this power and the glory of these kingdoms for it has been committed to me and i give it to anyone i choose worship me then and it shall all be yours but jesus answered him scripture says you must worship the lord your god and serve him alone then he led him to jerusalem and made him stand on the parapet of the temple if you are the son of god he said to him throw yourself down from here for scripture says he will put his angels in charge of you to guard you and again they will hold you up in their hands in case you hurt your foot against a stone but jesus answered him it has been said you must not put the lord your god to the test having exhausted all these ways of tempting him the devil left him to return at the appointed time the gospel of the lord praise you lord jesus christ my dear friends on this first sunday of lent we read in the gospel of jesus being tempted by satan one of the main purpose of that story is to remind us that we must say no to satan brothers and sisters temptation is part of our human condition it is enticement to evil and to sin but let us be clear that temptations can come only from the devil god never tempts us god can only test us the difference between temptation and test is that when the devil tempts us it is intended to make us bad but when god tests us it is intended to make us better and the best way in which we can become better and overcome temptations is through fasting do you know what fasting means fasting is when we don't eat or drink anything for a little while or day or month it may also be in a form of other physical attachments like your gadgets and bad habits brothers and sisters fasting helps our spirit become stronger and draws us closer to our heavenly father how come well because in each and every one of us we have a spirit body a spiritual self but we are also born with a physical body and so sometimes our spirit and our body want different things like when our body wants to eat some ice cream but our spirit knows that we should eat some fruit instead or when our spirit knows it is time to be reverent but our bodies want to move around or when our spirit knows that we should pray but our body wants to play or when our body wants to take something that we see and our spirit knows that it is the wrong thing to do and so if our spirit is strong then it will be easier for us to do the right thing and keep the commandments of god and so fasting is like exercise for our spirit we get to practice saying no to our body when our body wants something just like jesus did in today's gospel therefore every time we fast our spirit gets a little bit stronger by saying no to the body in this way we get a little bit closer to our heavenly father brothers and sisters when you are learning to fast it will be hard to do and so the scripture teaches us to pray when we are fasting because that's a really a good time for us to listen to god and when we pray we can feel even closer to god and our spirit is strengthened and so this land let us try to do some fasting did a day or even half a day so that like jesus who fasted and prayed when he was being tempted to break the father's commandments we too may be stronger in spirit to say no to our bodies and yes to the commandments of god and yes to be worthy sons and daughters of god's kingdom god love you we now make our profession of faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was the name of virginia and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was god's spirit and rose again on the third day in corner for his prescriptions he ascended into heaven and is sitting at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his strength will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen prayers of the faithful god our father has blessed us with jesus christ his living word with contrite hearts and faith we turn to him this lent trusting in his love and providence as we place our prayers before him for our pope and clergy that they continue to preach your life-giving word to your flock and guide them to live with confidence in your promise we pray lord speak through them for world leaders that they work together to find a peaceful resolution to end the conflict between russia and ukraine we pray lord enlighten them with your wisdom for our families that together we begin the season of lent prayerfully acknowledging our sins and turning to each other for spiritual support we pray lord immerse us in your word for the youth that they keep their focus on your word turning to jesus for courage and strength to overcome their temptations we pray lord help them to keep the faith for the distressed that they rise above their pains and fears to adopt the same confidence that jesus had in the face of temptation to trust in your promise of protection we pray lord let them feel your nearestness for all catechumens that they remain fervent in prayer and steadfast in faith experiencing your immense love with joyful and open hearts we pray lord enlighten and strengthen them for our brothers and sisters in war-torn countries that as they patiently rebuild their homes they experience your hand in their lives we pray lord be their stronghold for the world suffering from colbert 19 that all nations continue to work together in solidarity to fight the virus as we ask for your saving grace to end this pandemic we pray lord embrace all your children in distress heavenly father we thank you for your love and faithfulness show us the paths we must take this lent strengthening us with your graces and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from every evil we ask this through christ our lord amen so [Music] blessed are you lord god of all creation through your goodness we have this bread to offer which earth has given and human hands have made it will become for us the bread of life blessed be god forever blessed are you lord god of all creation through your goodness we have this wine to offer fruit of the vine and work of human hands it will become our spiritual drink blessed be god forever pray brethren that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and good of all his holy church give us the right disposition so lord we pray to make these offerings for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable and sacred time through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right angels it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord by abstaining 40 long days from earthly food he consecrated through his past the pattern of our lenten observance and by overturning all the snares of the ancient serpent taught us to cast out the leaven of malice so that celebrating worthily the paschal mystery we might pass over at last to the eternal paschal feast and so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death oh lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope william our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever amen at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thou will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will
