Hello,
everyone, and welcome to the X3M TIG channel. So for today's video, we got a little bit
everything I'm going to show you here. We got a repair on a sch. 80 , 10 inch pipe this is high pressure gas line. So it was X-rayed, as you can see,
and it was repair on the repair. So they X-ray it again
and there's more indication to be fixed on the top part,
top section of the pipe. The bottom one is already fixed. It's good. But now they want to they want me to open
and fix what's inside. That should be some grapes. As you can see,
this is on the bottom. It was repaired to one of our guys internal concavity and porosity. It's a little bit messy. So on the sides till 9:00
there's supposed to be some grapes and this is already prepped. He cut through for me, the night shift
guy, he did a really good job. kudos to that pipefitter So they mark. They want to go a little bit down deeper. They want to take that off
and cut through. So I'm just going to grab a quarter
inch grinder. I'm going to open up and with a cubitrone, I'm going to re bevel
and I'm going to start taking some meat down from that wall and try to open up a little bit
and see what's going on inside. Because you can see here as I'm going
in, taking on the wall, there's a porisity showing up here on the side
close to the edge, probably that was the root, as you can see here, that really on the edge. It's like start peeling off that. That's why I'm shaving down. That's what I'm taking root
and that's what you have to do. And this is what happened. I'm shawing more and more,
taking more meat to make nice and healthy. This side to this side of the of the 90. And as you can see here on the side,
that thin film that's that's root. That's what it was inside and I got to get rid of all that as you take it more and more
and the gap is opening more and more. As you can see here,
this example on the other side. Now, I got bigger gaps
so I can see clearer inside this. It you know, he had some issue
whoever was welding that. So you can’t weld over that You got to get rid of that. So you got to
I got to open the sides. I got to get rid of. On the other side,
you can see the leftovers of the root he was doing very cold. He was probably doing
some dipping technique, but a very unfortunately not
so successful. He had the grapes on the side
and the gap is getting more and more. So I get to the point
where it's already gap almost 20 mil, which is absolutely out of our welding
procedure. It's out of code,
specially on a high pressure gas line. So in this case,
there's no point to fix that. We're just simply going to get rid of
and cut out and put a pup piece And that's exactly what happened. So now we have two joints. It's going to be 100% x ray. There's some still leftovers of porosity on on a 90 on that. So we've got to get rid of that. I got two excellent pipefitters with me so they did a hell of a job cutting and prepping pup piece, and both sides 90 and pipe side and this much for a fitting, angle iron
on the bottom chain grips, probably use of come-along to put Everything together. Yeah, a little bit of gap. It's not going to be a perfect It's lots of room. So I this is one of mine, one of my guys. So they want to make a nice square straight as possible. Especially here with an idea. It's a hell of a job,
as you guys know, to make especially cut on an 90
to make it really straight And I think that then that they're really good job. So at this point a gap one
side is going to be a little bit low set, a set is a little bit wide,
still a still doing some fine tunes here. I'm going to weld one eight. The right is 80S-D2 I put three heavy tacks on
both side, and on the 90. I'm going to just going to put one tack and I'm going to start this and only one tack on the 90
just to hold that in place. And I'm using big blue 400 Miller Amazing machine, one of the best machine. I love them. I just simply love that machine. Okay, so now for the root pass, I'm running a one around 120 amps and I'm just going to feed on the bottom part back feading for the bottom section up to that, to those tacks. And then later I got a switch on as
I got a little bit different than a gap. So that's one of the reason why I didn't
put I put only one tack on the on an 90. The other side is open. So the side
that's not that open on a little bit, tight
side I'm going to root first as I said I’m backfeeding bottom section part up to 9:00. That's the root
this is how the root should look like. I don't know what guy did. So we had that repair. As I said, it was like two X-rays
and a repair on the repair. And that's what happened. Okay. So in order to make that proper work, you got to do a root on a
on a both joints in the same time. So I'm doing the bottom section of half, half on the 90 and, and the other half
on, on a pipe side and I'm going to do on the other side as well, as I said, in order to do proper job to keep that pup piece straight to be blended in with that
the rest of the spool. So the pipe got to be welded, but both joints now I'll do what I can the goal here is root and hot
pass both joints if possible, even finish one or two. No. See, how far are we going to get? It's a hell of a job,
especially when it started with a repair. Everything's going to be a minor
and then end up to get cut out. As you got to get rid of everything,
whatever is left inside, you've got to get rid of them
to start new root. But as I said, it was 20 mil gap. So it's definitely out of our procedure
and that's something you don't want to do
if it's a waterline or a fire line. Definitely. Yeah, go ahead. No problems, but don't a high pressure
gas line, that's an NO You don't want to do that. Then it's out of the code
and all other procedures K, I root he other side of the joint. As Isaid backfeed, the bottom section. So on on this side
I got a little bit wider gap on this side. I'm just going to weld close for that tack
and then we're going to stop. We're going to get rid of that
tack in order to close that gap a little bit. The puddle really goes nice, smooth. It's very standard. Not a hard to weld, especially when you've
got nice prep, good prep, Everything is clean in and out. You can get a good, healthy root. That's what you want on the bottom. Again, I'm going to get rid of that tack and that gap is going to shrink
a little bit. So it's going to be a little bit
it's a little bit easier to weld. The gap is not so, so heavy
as you're going to end up with more fill. It's going to be,
you know, more to fill a wider gap and end up burning more material. Then I'm just gonna continue on. As I said, get rid of that tack. It's still been a little bit wide here
and I don’t want lay wire technique here or just going to clean is going to do
a dip in technique side to side. And I'm slowly progressing up to the top section of that pipe as you guys, many of you watch my previous videos or for you who are just tuning in and find out for this
channel, this dip in technique, but it's one of my favorite highly recommended
for you guys, especially if you starters this one of the best technique until you get really good at it, switch
to a different technique. So for 100 %
x ray definitely recommended lower your amperage control
your travel speed. It's a little bit easier to manipulate
your your puddle. You got it. You got overall you've got a very better
way, better control over your puddle. You can watch how the puddle behaves
and pretty much you got control. Now I'm going to switch to the other side. Same idea that’s the root that's there, the bottom
all the way up to the top. the root looks good , loooks healthy. That's hoe the root should look like especially if you got 2, 100%
x-ray joints and the client is all over that. So I got to left, two windows at the top. He's going to check the root Now, the other side, same thing. Back feed, back,
feed, bottom section up to 9:00, 3:00. Depends on which side. you are welding Pretty much that's the idea of two, 3:00 or even less. Depends from the gap. Usually on the side when you're going up
to three or three and up is when you start
usually pulling out a rod close to that edge. You it's slightly like 5050 in between, in and out of that edge on your root the guy who did that root before me that a really big, big huge grape inside is you get in and then he went
I don't know what happened I'm assuming how probably he had a burn
through and he was trying to fix it. And then he just went wide open. And then for the bottom part,
he went really cold and dip in technique, but unsuccessfully. Unfortunately for him. Okay, so this part is done, as you could see by the root. There's lots of meat. Good. A healthy
not worry about a suckback. As I said, as long as you got a lot
to meat on the root , you can run 180 on a hot pass, so no problem. Okay.
So I left two windows at the top for the client QA to check out to inspect the root he will be, then I can go to close up and I'm going to start with
with a hot pass. That's what I'm going to do. I'm going to close that
and do hot pass on both sides. Okay? And that's it. He was here happy. So I close the windows
and going to run a hot pass and will just make that root pass clean, make sure not have any obstacles
inside the bevel so you can freely walk with the cup. You can crank that heat. I was around 180 here for that hot pass and now I got to pick and choose. I'm already short for the time which one? I'm going to. Weld, and finish. So it'll be this one. So that's going to be the pipe side. And this is a little bit of time lapse. Time laps of me filling all the way. I fill to flush with that side and the other side. And I'm going to leave for my buddy
on the night shift to finish that the rest of the joint. And they're really they're really RUSH
They want to X-ray that to make sure everything's
okay, hydro test and put it back, get ready for service. As I say, guys, take caution,
especially on a pipe like this. You know, it's going to be xrayed,
especially on high pressure gas line. You know, that's that they look for any details. So you want to make sure
everything is nice and clean, clean each pass, make sure everything is good, Make sure all your parts and your torch,
your flow, everything is good and good. Good conditions
replace any parts that are damaged or about to be damaged,
especially if you're running high heat. And for this torch, I'm using it. Heavy hitter, 350. It's amazing. Torch helps a lot. especially when it's not water colled
torch. It's just air cooled
and it works really fine. And at this point on a on a cap,
I'm going to go to to pass cap and I'm this is about as I'm using the remote but it's around 200 amps for the cap. That's the beauty of thick pipe
you can really run hot 1/8 80S-D2 this is what it is pretty much is in our procedure. We use that a lot in power plants. That's the beauty of running hot. Yes. When you got a nice, good solid foundation for it thick pipe as I said 200 amps
and then it's really nice and liquid use. You can manipulate,
you can just play with that puddle It's just a beauty to watch. And the beauty to weld. Okay, No one pass is done on the both
side of the pipe and I'm just going to run the second pass here. This is my buddy pipefitter. Great tradesman. Excellent. pipefitter It's helping me out, passing that rod so we can finish that a little bit faster. This is the second pass here. I'm running same amperage around 200 amps same rod, one eight. Just as I said, guys, make sure it's nice and and liquid. Keep that edge straight
as straight as possible. You want to make it look
nice is going to be good for it. He's going to be eye appealing for the client and you're going to look like superstar. It was a hell of a work here, guys,
but what we did, was the real action. This is how we do in a field. Finally, some action. And I got to say, kudos to my buddies, two excellent tradesmen,
pipefitters, Darren and Francois. So I thank you guys once again. And that's it. Pretty much this is done, so I finish this joint. The other one is just a root and hot pass So night shift. Night shift guy
Ryan, he's going to finish the rest and it's going to be ready for the x ray. This is a little bit rush and that's it. X ray is done. Everything's good. 100%, no issue. Not even one single indication on both joints. That's very good. And that's what we like. And hope you guys like it. Enjoy it. subscribe, like , and share. And you got to “burn to learn” Guys. See in the next one. Take care.
